Make adding and removing projects explicit across devices - #295
Conversation
…ices The daemon's project registry is now each machine's single project list. Only `init` adds a project and the new `remove_project` request removes it. Previously the registry grew whenever any request touched an initialized project, and the Mac removed projects by deleting .pu/manifest.json, which never reached the daemon, so other Macs and the phone kept showing removed projects. - Protocol 13: `remove_project` (keeps files and .pu/; refuses while agents are live unless `suspend_agents`) and `subscribe_projects`, which pushes the full root list on every change. - Using a project no longer registers it, so a project removed on one device stays removed while others still watch it. - Registry entries whose folder exists without a manifest (left behind by older clients) are dropped on load and by the next global inventory. - CLI: `pu projects add [path]` and `pu projects remove [path] [--suspend-agents]`. - macOS: the sidebar follows the local daemon's registry instead of its own UserDefaults list (imported once). Remove Project calls remove_project instead of deleting files. Remote projects offer both "Hide on This Mac/iPad" and "Remove from <machine>", and machines follow pushed changes. - Phone: bridge `workspace.removeProject` and a "Remove from <machine>" action. - Prune projects removed by older clients in the background with bounded
reads, so a stale network mount can no longer stop the daemon binding its
socket. The project stream waits for the prune, so no client opens one
of those projects again.
- An agent in a folder that is not a registered project counts as
standalone and no longer marks the global inventory partial, which had
blocked phone management.
- remove_project reports sessions it had to kill separately (`killed`)
from suspended agents, which resume.
- macOS:
- Projects that join the sidebar after launch keep their suspended agents
paused.
- A Point Guard folder removed from another device is registered again.
- Legacy sidebar entries on unmounted volumes are kept for the next
launch.
- Local remove sends the canonical path.
- The projects subscription no longer leaks a connection when stopped
mid-connect.
- docs: drop the stale "validated use registers" wording.

CLI: - `pu projects remove` without a path uses --project, then the current directory. An inherited PU_PROJECT_ROOT no longer chooses a project to remove for every device. - Remote roots must be absolute after the final path is chosen, including one given with --project. Daemon: - remove_project refuses when suspending fails on a readable project, instead of killing agents it would have suspended. Only a missing manifest falls back to stopping sessions, which are reported as killed. - IpcServer::bind starts the registry prune, so a served registry always opens the projects stream; the final step is bounded. macOS: - Re-registering a Point Guard folder removed elsewhere keeps the agents that removal suspended paused. - Resuming last session's agents depends on whether a legacy entry was actually imported, not just present. - The keep-paused flag is consumed when an open starts, so a failed open can't leave it set. Removal warnings on the phone, in the contract and in the bridge now say that a session the project does not record is stopped. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01UEnaUaTZMG1Rr8DGJpUnCm
- Inventory is read-only again. Folders removed by older clients are only dropped by the startup prune, which removes the (bool, String) error plumbing. The prune re-check stats the manifest instead of parsing it, `unregister_projects` takes a named mode, and the projects stream no longer re-sorts an already sorted list. - Suspended agents "can be resumed" once a project is added again (the Mac resumes them only when it reopens the project itself), so every confirmation, CLI line and doc now says that instead of "resume". - Bridge: the protocol probe for removal sends only `health` instead of a full agent inventory, and the unused `projectRemoval` feature flag is gone. - macOS: one `DaemonClient.removeProject` for local and remote removal, one `AppState.machine(for:)` lookup and one device-name value. Canonical roots are resolved once per root. "No list yet" is derived from `lastLocalProjects == nil`. Fixed a misplaced doc comment. - CLI: rename the path-default enum, which shadowed `Default`, and fix stale help text. - Test: `assert_invalid_bytes_close_stream` sends its two lines in one write, so the daemon closing first can no longer fail it with a broken pipe. It flaked on CI. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01UEnaUaTZMG1Rr8DGJpUnCm
- `was_removed` treats only a manifest that is definitely absent (`try_exists() == Ok(false)`) as removed. A permission error or a stale mount at startup no longer drops a project from every device's list. - macOS caches a root's canonical path only once `realpath` succeeds, so a project restored before its volume mounted is still matched to the daemon's root afterwards, instead of opening twice. - Fix a stale comment about the prune re-check. - Around line 162-170: In the unregister flow, copy the project roots while
holding the `projects` mutex, then release the guard before partitioning and
calling `was_removed`. Preserve the existing `roots` and `Unregister` filtering

- Engine: `unregister_projects` snapshots the registry, releases the mutex, and only then stats folders. A stale mount can no longer block health, inventory or the projects stream. - Bridge: removal proceeds when only worktree metadata is partial, so a registered project with an unreadable manifest can still be removed. - macOS decodes `killed` from `project_removed`, and the removal confirmation says any other session in the folder is stopped. - Wording: removal keeps the folder and `.pu/`, but suspending agents updates the manifest. The CLI, the Mac and phone confirmations and the docs no longer claim `.pu/` is untouched. The contract now describes an older daemon's actual result: a failed mutation with an update message. Main landed explicit project membership (#295) at protocol 13, which reworked the same registry and sidebars. Resolution: - Protocol 14 for reorder_projects (main already used 13). - The registry stays an ordered Vec. Registration appends, removal keeps the rest in order, and a reorder notifies subscribe_projects streams, so every device following the registry picks up a new order at once. - The Mac's local sidebar follows main's projects subscription and now also sorts into the pushed order; the 30s polling loop is gone. - Remote projects keep main's Hide/Remove entries next to Move Up/Down. - Bridge: workspace.reorderProjects sits beside workspace.removeProject, refuses daemons older than protocol 14 before dispatch, and gets the 100s phone deadline that the contract documents (it fell back to the generic 35s, shorter than the bridge's own wait). Problem
Projects removed on the Mac Studio kept showing up on the MacBook Air (over SSH) and on the phone. Each machine had three separate project lists, and none of them tracked removal:
"Remove Project" deleted
.pu/manifest.jsonand never told the daemon. The Studio's registry currently holds 9 such removed projects.Change
The daemon's registry becomes each machine's single project list, with explicit add and remove.
remove_project {project_root, suspend_agents}: forgets the project for every client. It keeps its files and.pu/, so adding it again restores worktrees and agents. Live agents make it fail withPROJECT_HAS_LIVE_AGENTSunlesssuspend_agentsis set, which suspends them so they can be resumed later.subscribe_projects: pushesprojects_changed {projects}on subscribe and after every add or remove.initadds a project. Using a project (status, spawn, subscriptions) no longer registers it. Otherwise a project removed on one device would come back the moment another device still watching it sent a request.subscribe_projectssends its first list only after this cleanup, so no client opens one of those projects again. A root whose whole folder is missing stays and shows as unavailable, since it may be on an unmounted volume.project_removedlistssuspendedagents (they can be resumed once the project is added again; the Mac resumes them automatically when it reopens the project itself) separately fromkilled: live sessions the manifest didn't record, which can't be resumed. If suspending fails on a readable project, the removal is refused rather than killing agents.pu projects add [path](same aspu init) andpu projects remove [path] [--suspend-agents]. Both also work with--machinewhen given an absolute path. Without a path,removeuses--projectand then the current directory, never an inheritedPU_PROJECT_ROOT, so an agent's environment can't pick a project to remove for every device.PurePointOpenProjectslist is imported once, then deleted.pu projects add) keep them paused.remove_projectinstead of deleting files.workspace.removeProject(requires protocol 13 or later, always suspends agents) and a Remove from <machine> action in the project row's context menu (re-applied onto main's new home screen).ipc-api.md,daemon.md,cli.md,cli-commands-map.csvand the mobilecontract.mdare updated.Behaviour changes to know about

cargo test --workspace, clippy and fmt all pass. New tests cover:node --test bridge/workspace.test.jspasses, including a new removal test. The one failure there (and the one interminals.test.js) needs the packaged lock-helper binary, which this checkout doesn't have, and isn't related to this change.npm run checkandcheck-rpc-budgets.pypass, and the phone app builds for the iOS simulator.xcodebuildon the macOS app (CLAUDE.md), so it was not built locally; CI's macOS Build & Test builds it and runs its XCTest suites. Real multi-device behaviour (Studio, MacBook Air, phone) still needs a manual check.7692d04, including macOS Build & Test, Mobile Swift & iOS tests and the release archive. Later commits addressed CodeRabbit, two independent reviews and a cleanup pass, and fixed a pre-existing flaky stream test (assert_invalid_bytes_close_stream).verification/check-point-guard-workspace.pywas already broken onmain(missingAgentSignal*/DaemonTransportstubs).
