Phase 3 of moving the desktop core into relay (stacked on #2013, which is stacked on #2012). relay init now gives agents real message injection into running sessions through the core (agent-relay-probe), instead of MCP inbox polling. See docs/probe-move.md ("Phase 3").

What changed

Release artifacts — .github/workflows/probe-release.yml (dispatch only; dry_run defaults to true; also runs dry on PRs that touch it). Builds agent-relay-probe with AGENT_RELAY_PROBE_VERSION=<version> for linux-x64/arm64 (glibc, Ubuntu 22.04), darwin-arm64, darwin-x64 (cross-built) and windows-x64, smoke-tests --version, and publishes probe-v<version>/agent-relay-probe-<version>-<os>-<arch>[.exe] plus .sha256 sidecars (<hex> <asset>). probe-v* tags never collide with the CLI's v* tags, and the release is --latest=false because install.sh resolves the CLI via releases/latest. No release was cut.

Install — the CLI downloads the pinned core (PROBE_VERSION = 15.0.0) into the canonical bin dir (AGENT_RELAY_INSTALL_DIR → AGENT_RELAY_HOME → ~/.agentworkforce/relay/bin, new getCanonicalProbePath) the same way it installs relaycast-engine (generalized into ensureReleaseBinary: checksum first, SHA-256 verified, temp file, --version check, atomic rename). AGENT_RELAY_PROBE_PATH overrides.

One core per machine — init connects to the bridge socket (AGENT_RELAY_CORE_SOCKET or ~/.agentworkforce/desktop/core.sock; Windows pipe name derived exactly as relay::transport, shared test vector), refuses a socket in a directory others can write to, greets with hello and reads status.get. A core that answers (desktop app, service, or an earlier init's) is attached to; only when none answers does init start agent-relay-probe relay serve --headless --cli-managed detached (pid/socket/binary in <relay home>/local/core.json). The core's own flock settles races. relay init --stop stops only the core init started (daemon.shutdown, SIGTERM fallback).

Hooks vs MCP per tool — injected tools get the core's route and no MCP server (one identity per session: the core's registration). Init turns on auto_activate and per tool: Claude Code direct_delivery_default (accept only when unset) + claude_session_hook; Codex codex_stop_hook; OpenCode opencode_plugin; Grok grok_leader; Devin devin_direct_delivery; Pi needs nothing (the core installs its extension). An MCP entry an earlier init added is removed for injected tools. Failed tools, unsupported platforms or a failed download fall back to the MCP server; --delivery mcp asks for it. Settings are per user (every project); --scope now only places the MCP fallback. Settings init turned on are recorded and --uninstall turns off exactly those (and removes the crossSessionInbound key it added rather than leaving the core's hold).

Probe changes — relay serve --cli-managed (requires --headless): keeps the desktop app's login entry and turns nothing on by itself (no agent-led defaults at start, no apply_integration_defaults on refresh). The Claude SessionStart hook now tells a not-yet-registered session that automatic activation will put on the relay that it joins by itself (with the socket's /whoami, /agents, /send) instead of telling it to ask the person to register — that raced auto-activation in the e2e.

End-to-end proof (this machine, isolated)

Isolated HOME, all XDG_*, AGENT_RELAY_HOME, AGENT_RELAY_INSTALL_DIR, core socket and app data; throwaway git project; real Claude Code 2.1.280 and Codex 0.154.0 interactive TUIs in tmux. The user's agent-relay.service, ~/.claude, ~/.codex and active workspace were not touched by the e2e.

  • relay init --yes --tools claude,codex → Started the Agent Relay core (agent-relay-probe 15.0.0, pid …); re-run → The Agent Relay core relay init started earlier is running.
  • Claude session joined by itself (claude-relay-probe-e2e-2-relay-probe). CLI DM sent 00:22:39Z → injected as a turn at 00:22:39.763Z: Another Claude session sent a message: [via Agent Relay — from @alice · ref 3e148a1e6610] …; Claude read it (agent-relay-probe relay read), replied over the session socket, alice's inbox shows PINEAPPLE.
  • Claude → Codex over the socket (sent 00:23:12Z) → injected into the idle Codex TUI at 00:23:18.905Z ([via Agent Relay — from @claude-relay-probe-e2e-2-relay-probe · ref a4092eb03451]); Codex replied → injected into Claude at 00:25:36.269Z. No inbox tool was called anywhere.
  • A core started outside init was attached to (Using the Agent Relay core already running on this machine …), survived relay init --stop; relay init --uninstall turned off auto_activate, direct_delivery, claude_session_hook, codex_stop_hook.

Tests

  • npx tsc --noEmit -p packages/cli: clean.
  • vitest init.test.ts + new probe-core.test.ts: 102 passed (fake core: start/reuse/attach/stop-only-own/uninstall/MCP migration/held Claude/workspace mismatch/download+checksum/fallback/guided; real unix-socket NDJSON client; asset names vs the workflow; bridge version vs protocol.rs).
  • Rust: new tests for --cli-managed defaults and login entry, the Joining hook state, and the pipe-name vector; cargo test --locked (empty HOME/XDG) — see comment for the result.

Remaining (docs/probe-move.md)

Phase 4 relay-desktop consumes the core from relay releases (and must take over from a --cli-managed core instead of crash-looping on the lock); per-project multi-workspace; AGENT_RELAY_PROJECT inference. Gaps: no probe-v15.0.0 release yet (init falls back to MCP until one exists); Codex's sandbox asks to escalate for the socket; messages arrive as pointers (show_relay_messages off); --uninstall leaves an empty hooks.json, Codex hook-trust entries and the core's .relay-desktop-backup copies, and cannot remove the Pi extension; the core's telemetry doesn't follow the CLI's opt-out; no user service is installed (documented).

relay init now installs the core (agent-relay-probe) into the install
directory's bin from a probe-v<version> release (SHA-256 sidecar, temp
file, --version check, atomic rename), attaches to a core already running
on the machine (the desktop app's or an earlier init's) or starts one
headless with --cli-managed, and turns on the core's delivery per tool
through settings.set: Claude Code's session inbox and SessionStart hook,
Codex hooks, OpenCode plugin, Grok leader socket and Devin hooks, plus
automatic activation. Injected tools get no MCP server, and an MCP entry
an earlier init added is removed, so each session has one identity; tools
the core cannot serve fall back to the MCP server (--delivery mcp asks for
it). --stop stops only the core init started; --uninstall turns off
exactly the settings init turned on.

Probe: `relay serve --cli-managed` keeps the desktop app's login entry
and turns nothing on by itself (no agent-led or integration defaults);
the Claude SessionStart hook tells a session that automatic activation
will put on the relay that it joins by itself, with the socket's whoami,
agents and send commands, instead of asking the person to register it.

Adds .github/workflows/probe-release.yml (dispatchable, dry run by
default) building linux-x64/arm64, darwin-arm64/x64 and windows-x64
binaries with .sha256 sidecars for probe-v<version> releases.

Walkthrough

relay init now installs or reuses the Agent Relay probe core and uses it for per-tool message delivery by default. It retains MCP delivery as an option and fallback. The changes add CLI-managed core behavior, probe release builds, Pi extension settings, workspace checks, and Claude joining-session instructions.

Changes: Probe-backed relay init

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe release and installation
.github/workflows/probe-release.yml, packages/cli/src/cli/lib/probe-core.ts, packages/cli/src/cli/lib/relaycast-engine-install.ts, packages/harness-driver/src/install-paths.ts
The workflow builds five platform binaries with checksums and publishes tagged releases. The CLI resolves probe assets, validates versions, selects canonical paths, and reuses the shared release installer.

packages/cli/src/cli/lib/probe-core.ts, crates/probe/src/probe/relay_commands.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/daemon.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/cli.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/transport.rs, crates/probe/docs/relay-core.md
The CLI connects to or starts a detached core. relay serve gains --cli-managed; this mode does not apply agent-led or integration defaults and preserves GUI autostart. The send route accepts POST /send.
Per-tool delivery and init lifecycle
packages/cli/src/cli/lib/probe-core.ts, packages/cli/src/cli/commands/init.ts, packages/cli/src/cli/commands/init.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md, docs/probe-move.md
relay init configures injection or MCP routes, rolls back failed settings, records owned state, checks workspace identity, and stops only cores started by init. The changelog and implementation notes describe delivery modes and lifecycle.
Pi settings and automatic activation
crates/probe/src/relay/pi/*, crates/probe/src/relay/contract/agents/settings.rs, crates/probe/contract/CoreContract.swift, crates/probe/src/relay/local/*, crates/probe/src/relay/settings_registry.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/sessions.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/setup.rs
The core exposes pi_extension, controls its managed Pi extension, and reports whether a session can activate automatically.
Claude joining-session handling
crates/probe/src/relay/claude/session_hook.rs, crates/probe/src/relay/cli.rs
The Claude hook recognizes automatically activating sessions and provides joining guidance in interactive runs. Noninteractive runs remain quiet.

Local cargo test --locked in crates/probe (empty HOME, XDG_RUNTIME_DIR, scrubbed env): lib 2539 passed / 12 ignored; all integration targets passed; bin 377 passed, 1 failed: live::selected_remote::tests::selected_claude_worker_refreshes_shallow_catalog_and_selected_evidence ("hydrates within 8s"), which fails the same way on the base branch feat/probe-cli-workspace on this machine (pre-existing, timing/env-dependent). CI on a85c838: Probe CI (Linux/macOS/Windows/contract/public source), CI, Probe Release (dry run, all 5 targets built and smoke-tested) green.

HANDOFF → relay-oss: the probe moves into AgentWorkforce/relay, and relay init gets real injection (from relay-fc, 2026-10-28)

GOAL (Khaliq's original request, reaffirmed today)

  • The relay-desktop "probe" core (the Rust daemon that finds running agent sessions and injects Relay messages into them through each tool's own route: hooks, plugins, app servers; no PTY) lives in this repo.
  • relay init installs and runs it, so messages are INJECTED into running Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok, Pi and Devin sessions with no desktop GUI and no inbox polling. This must work for local, hosted and self-hosted Relaycast.
  • Decisions:
    • Only the core moves. The macOS, GTK/Windows and iPad apps stay in relay-desktop and consume the core from relay.
    • The core was imported as a clean snapshot, with no relay-desktop history (that history has scrubbed internal docs and an old PostHog key).
    • The relay build of the core must NOT depend on relayhistory (ai-hist, history-provider-sources).
    • 15.0.0 stays on npm next until injection works through the probe from the published packages.
  • Khaliq approved (in this session): cut probe-v15.0.0 and agent-relay@15.0.0-next.4 after the PRs below merge, then run the real injection e2e from the published packages. Promoting 15.0.0 to latest needs a separate go-ahead (and chief's).

STATE (relay main = 8d820ee, which includes the #2012 merge)

  • feat(probe): import the desktop probe core into crates/probe (phase 1) #2012 MERGED: crates/probe is its own Cargo workspace, GTK split out, Probe CI (.github/workflows/probe-ci.yml) on Linux, macOS arm64 and Windows (MSVC). docs/probe-move.md is the design note and phase list.
  • feat(probe): build the core without relayhistory (history feature) #2017 (draft), branch feat/probe-core-without-history @ f1eebd8, base main. Phase 1.5:
    • A history Cargo feature, on by default (that's the desktop build). relay builds --no-default-features --features production-binaries, which pulls in no ai-hist and no history-provider-sources (CI checks this).
    • History-only bridge methods (uploader.*, sessions.transcript) return history_unavailable. The contract is identical in both builds (CI checks).
    • Devin Cloud and claude.ai web are history-only. Known gap: Cloud sign-in in the no-history build adopts the workspace, then errors at its uploader step.
    • CI at handoff: no-history Linux, Windows (both configurations), contract and public-source all passed. Linux and macOS WITH-history tests were still running (Probe CI run 40806719169). If green, run gh pr ready 2017. If red, it's a history-build test that was never run locally.
  • feat(probe): resolve the workspace the agent-relay CLI selects (phase 2) #2013 (ready), branch feat/probe-cli-workspace @ ea940dc, base main. Phase 2: the probe resolves its workspace the way the CLI does.
    • Precedence: env key, then the project's .agentworkforce/relay/workspace-key.json (when AGENT_RELAY_PROJECT is set), then the active entry in $AGENT_RELAY_HOME/workspaces.json, honouring relaycast-origins.json (shared fixture packages/contracts/fixtures/relaycast-origin-binding.json). Cloud sign-in is the fallback only.
    • CI: one macOS-only probe failure (history::tests::first_capture_indexes_recent_sessions_before_older_history_and_resumes, the live.rs:1238 timeout helper, looks like a flake), rerun requested on run 40805528564. Targeted verification run 40805529004 was queued.
  • feat(cli): relay init injects messages through the Agent Relay core (probe phase 3) #2016 (draft), branch feat/probe-relay-init @ 8d8bc63, base feat/probe-cli-workspace. Phase 3, relay init with the probe:
    • Release workflow .github/workflows/probe-release.yml: manual dispatch, dry run by default. Tags probe-v; assets agent-relay-probe---[.exe] plus .sha256; marked not-latest. It now builds --no-default-features --features production-binaries.

    • CLI downloads the probe the same way it downloads relaycast-engine: sha256 first, then --version check, then atomic rename into the install dir's bin. AGENT_RELAY_PROBE_PATH overrides it. Pinned at 15.0.0.

    • One core per machine: init calls status.get on ~/.agentworkforce/desktop/core.sock (or AGENT_RELAY_CORE_SOCKET) and attaches if anything answers. Otherwise it starts agent-relay-probe relay serve --headless --cli-managed and records the pid; init --stop stops only the core init started. The new --cli-managed flag keeps the core from turning on deliveries by itself.

    • Per-tool delivery: injection-capable tools get NO MCP entry (one identity). Settings init turns on, recorded so --uninstall turns off exactly these:

      Tool | Setting
      Claude Code | direct_delivery_default (only if unset), claude_session_hook
      Codex | codex_stop_hook
      OpenCode | opencode_plugin
      Grok | grok_leader
      Devin | devin_direct_delivery
      Pi | nothing (the probe installs its extension itself)

      MCP is the fallback, or with --delivery mcp.

    • E2E already proven (isolated HOME, config dirs, socket, Claude 2.1.280 and Codex 0.154 interactive in tmux): CLI to a live Claude session in about 1s; Claude to an idle Codex in about 6s, Codex replied; no inbox calls.

    • CI on 8d8bc63 was queued at handoff. Watch Probe Release (the new feature flags).

NEXT STEPS (in order)

  1. feat(probe): build the core without relayhistory (history feature) #2017: get the with-history Linux and macOS tests green, gh pr ready, merge (pin --match-head-commit, admin merge; main needs 1 review, the established practice is gh pr merge --admin).
  2. feat(probe): resolve the workspace the agent-relay CLI selects (phase 2) #2013: green (rerun the macOS flake), merge. Then retarget feat(cli): relay init injects messages through the Agent Relay core (probe phase 3) #2016 to main (gh pr edit 2016 --base main), merge origin/main into it, and confirm probe-release builds the no-history binary.
  3. feat(cli): relay init injects messages through the Agent Relay core (probe phase 3) #2016: green, gh pr ready, merge.
  4. Probe release: dispatch probe-release.yml as a dry run, then for real as probe-v15.0.0.
  5. CLI prerelease: publish.yml with package=cli-prerelease, custom_version=15.0.0-next.4, preid=next, tag=next. ALWAYS set custom_version: main's package.json says 14.0.0, so prerelease alone gives 14.0.1-next.0. ci(publish): refuse prerelease versions under the latest dist-tag #2000 blocks a prerelease from going to latest.
  6. REAL e2e from the published packages, on a machine with real Claude Code and Codex, in a fresh throwaway git project with isolated AGENT_RELAY_HOME, AGENT_RELAY_INSTALL_DIR, CODEX_HOME/CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR and core socket:
    • npx -y agent-relay@15.0.0-next.4 init --yes --tools claude,codex
    • Message Codex to a live Claude session and Claude to a live Codex session; both must be injected without inbox calls.
    • Codex needs the exact project dir trusted in its config.toml (a trusted parent doesn't count; codex exec never asks).
  7. Remaining gaps before promoting 15.0.0 (also in docs/probe-move.md):
    • The Codex sandbox can't reach the core socket, so Codex asks for approval to read and reply.
    • Messages arrive as pointers because show_relay_messages is off by default. Decide on that default.
    • --uninstall leaves an empty hooks.json, Codex hook-trust entries, the probe's .relay-desktop-backup files, and the Pi extension.
    • The probe's telemetry ignores the CLI opt-out.
    • Phase 4: relay-desktop consumes the core from relay (git pin on a relay tag with default-features history, never declaring ai-hist itself), and the desktop service must take over from a --cli-managed core instead of restart-looping on its lock.
    • Per-project workspaces: the daemon assumes a single workspace about 40 times.
    • Inferring AGENT_RELAY_PROJECT.
    • A second Codex session in the same folder gets name suffix -2, so "codex-" can hit a stale session.
    • Optional: relayhistory publishing history-provider-sources to crates.io (all-or-nothing, exact =X.Y.Z pins with ai-hist), so the desktop build can use registry versions.

CI / REPO GOTCHAS

  • Commits pushed by the Prettier and Rust auto-format bots hold the next CI runs as action_required. Approve ONLY current-head runs (gh api -X POST repos/AgentWorkforce/relay/actions/runs/<id>/approve) and cancel stale-head ones.
    • crates/probe/{src,resources,tests/fixtures,docs} are in .prettierignore (the probe embeds them byte-for-byte; formatting broke tests).
    • Run prettier on other changed files before pushing so the bot has nothing to push.
  • "Targeted feature verification" shards often fail on broker messaging, pty-exit or workspace_admission_unavailable timeouts against the shared test Relaycast. That's not the PR's fault. gh run rerun <id> --failed works now (ci(targeted-verification): let "Re-run failed jobs" find the shard selection #2001).
  • Probe tests need an empty HOME with RUSTUP_HOME/CARGO_HOME preserved, and should run under env -i. Known flakes: live::selected_remote::...selected_claude_worker... (8s), and cloud::tests::cloud_bearer_reuses_only_a_matching_unexpired_official_cli_session (fails if Agent Relay or Claude env vars are set). Linux probe tests run on ubuntu-latest with --test-threads=4 (the starsling self-hosted runner died under the suite).
  • CI is slow: about 80 checks per PR, a shared runner pool, and macOS lanes are scarce. Merge pinned to the exact green head (--match-head-commit <full sha>), never while a newer commit's checks are still running.
  • Changelog: root CHANGELOG.md is [Unreleased - Major], Keep-a-Changelog, concise and user-facing. No entries for CI- or test-only changes.

SAFETY (Khaliq's machine and fleet)

  • Never touch the real ~/.agentworkforce/relay active workspace ("ghsub-live"). The sf-frame fleet node depends on it; its start script is now pinned to ghsub-live.
  • The desktop service agent-relay.service may be restarted only, never stopped or disabled.
  • Tests must not reach the real desktop core socket. An earlier test run did, flipped claude_session_hook and edited ~/.claude/settings.json; that was reverted, and init.test.ts now points at a temp no-core.sock.
  • Never print secrets (rk_, at_, nt_, phc_).
  • Publishing is gated on Khaliq/chief. next.4 and probe-v15.0.0 are approved; latest is not.

OTHER OPEN ITEMS (not probe)

  • relay#2008: draft README refresh. Khaliq rewrites it himself; land it with or after 15.0.0. Don't edit it.
  • Hosted free trial:
    • Engine 11.1.0 is released and dev is verified.
    • relaycast-cloud#280 now CONFLICTS with main and needs a rebase. Merging it deploys PRODUCTION.
    • Blocked on: agentrelay.com /pricing being live (Will's agentrelay.com#242, mergeable; humans deploy agentrelay.com), and a decision on migration 0076 (index on deliveries flagged as slow in prod: a read-only row count or defer it).
  • cloud#4254: Cloudflare Browser Integrity Check blocks the Python-urllib user agent zone-wide. Needs a human Cloudflare rule to skip BIC for /cloud/api/*.
  • Backlog: 24 DECIDE PRs await product calls (the full triage table is in relay-fc's scratchpad on Khaliq's Linux machine; ask Khaliq); relay#1349 is still a live bug.

Summary

relay init installs or attaches to the Agent Relay core and chooses injection or MCP for each tool.

  • Probe releases include platform binaries and checksum files.
  • Relay init injects messages into selected agent sessions through one core.
  • The core lets relay init enable only the delivery settings a person chose.
  • People can turn the Agent Relay Pi extension on or off.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not yield a CLI-managed custom socket to the desktop job.

On macOS, relay init can start a headless core on an AGENT_RELAY_CORE_SOCKET override. This watcher still stops that core when the desktop launchd job is loaded, although the desktop job serves its own default socket. The CLI then loses its core and delivery on the custom socket. Check that the desktop job can take over this core’s socket before requesting shutdown. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Shorten this changelog bullet.

The repository's changelog rules require short, impact-first bullets. This bullet is one very long entry. It includes implementation detail: the probe-v<version> tag format, the SHA-256 check, the install location, and a per-tool list of hooks and plugins. It also covers three separate user-visible changes:

  • Message injection becomes the default delivery.
  • Re-running init removes an earlier MCP entry.
  • --delivery mcp and the MCP fallback.

Split the bullet. Keep the practical effect in each part. Move the mechanism detail to docs/probe-move.md, which already covers it.

As per coding guidelines: "Changelog entries should be concise and impact-first. Prefer one short bullet per user-visible change" and drop "implementation backstory".

Write the private JSON records atomically.

writePrivateJson writes straight to the target. This function stores the core record used by --stop and the settings record used by --uninstall. If the process dies mid-write, readCoreState and readTurnedOn get invalid JSON. They return undefined or []. Init then loses track of the core it started and of the settings it turned on.

The mode: 0o600 option also applies only when the file is created. A temp file plus rename fixes both problems. Write the temp file in the same directory. On Windows, if renameSync throws EPERM or EEXIST, unlink the destination and retry.

Proposed fix
 export function writePrivateJson(file: string, value: unknown): void {
-  fs.mkdirSync(path.dirname(file), { recursive: true, mode: 0o700 });
-  fs.writeFileSync(file, `${JSON.stringify(value, null, 2)}\n`, { mode: 0o600 });
+  const dir = path.dirname(file);
+  fs.mkdirSync(dir, { recursive: true, mode: 0o700 });
+  const temp = path.join(dir, `.${path.basename(file)}.${process.pid}.tmp`);
+  try {
+    fs.writeFileSync(temp, `${JSON.stringify(value, null, 2)}\n`, { mode: 0o600 });
+    fs.renameSync(temp, file);
+  } finally {
+    fs.rmSync(temp, { force: true });
+  }
 }

Based on learnings: write to a temporary file in the same directory, then rename it to the target path. Handle Windows EPERM/EEXIST on rename.

…s core handling

- enableDelivery stops at a tool's first failed setting and turns off what
  init turned on for it (this run or recorded), so the MCP fallback is its
  only route; auto_activate is turned on only once a tool is injected.
- --delivery mcp turns off the recorded injection settings of those tools
  (and auto_activate once none is left) before adding MCP, or adds none.
- --stop never signals a recorded pid no core answers for; it drops the
  stale record.
- The core-workspace check compares the verified Relaycast workspace id
  with the project's (GET /v1/workspace), not just the server URL.
- Init records every Claude login whose crossSessionInbound the core set
  and restores each on uninstall or rollback.
- connectCore requires a user-owned 0600 socket and a core-shaped hello;
  agent-relay-probe --version must print exactly "agent-relay-probe <ver>".
- Spawn failures fall back to MCP; failed MCP-entry removals are reported;
  the settings record is merged at write time.
- probe: the SessionStart hook says a session joins by itself only when
  /setup/status reports session.auto_activates (workspace present, folder
  not excluded); the probe socket client accepts POST /send.
- probe-release: real releases only from main.

… is chosen

- A --cli-managed core no longer installs the Pi extension at start; the
  desktop core still does, unless it was turned off.
- New core setting pi_extension: true installs Agent Relay's extension in
  ~/.pi/agent/extensions, false removes only its own file and records the
  choice in the core's data (pi-extension.off), so a desktop start keeps it
  off. Refused where Pi has not run or Pi sessions are off; person-only to
  turn on, like the other routes. Added to the bridge contract and Swift.
- relay init: Pi's delivery row is pi_extension, recorded like the others,
  so --uninstall, --delivery mcp and a rollback turn it off.

… activation check

- With pi_extension off, a message already queued in a Pi session's inbox
  (either record version) stays Accepted for the loaded extension to
  deliver; only new messages are refused.
- /setup/status's session.auto_activates now uses activation's own
  per-session check (LocalSessions::activation_check, shared with
  auto_activation_sessions), so sdk- Claude sessions and the opt-in kinds
  are never told they join by themselves.
- relay-core.md: "pi_extension"? in the documented settings shape.

… to MCP

If saving core-settings.json fails after delivery was turned on, init turns
off the settings this run enabled (and restores the Claude files it set)
before the MCP fallback. If any stays on, setup stops with the settings to
turn off instead of adding a second route.

…rollback, share the activation policy

- relay init records every Claude login's crossSessionInbound (or its
  absence) before turning direct delivery on, and every turn-off (rollback,
  failed record save, --delivery mcp, --uninstall) puts those values back
  after the core writes hold, so a person's own "accept" survives.
- A failed tool whose settings cannot be turned off again stops setup with
  a clear error and gets no MCP server; the setting stays recorded.
- probe: auto_activation::activation_applies is the one per-kind policy
  (unset: Devin, Muse, OpenClaw, Hermes) for activate_new_sessions and for
  /setup/status's auto_activates.
- docs/probe-move.md: when MCP is the fallback, the remaining two-route case
  (a failed MCP-entry removal), and the detached core without a service.
