Make missionaries reads server-only and GET /api/donate config-only (#2364) - #2423
REVOKE ALL ON TABLE public.missionaries FROM anon, authenticated, PUBLIC (this also clears column privileges).
ALTER TABLE public.missionaries ENABLE ROW LEVEL SECURITY (idempotent; the force flag is not touched).
OQ1 (ruled B): GRANT SELECT (id, profile_id) … TO authenticated, plus "missionaries own row key read"FOR SELECT TO authenticated, which uses the same own-profile test as 20260625002117:202-208. The own-missionary branches of "donations owner or staff select" and "donor pledges owner or staff select" read only those two columns, so donor, missionary and staff reads of donations and donor_pledges don't change.
Post-assert:
anon has no table or column SELECT.
authenticated has no table-wide SELECT, and its column SELECT is exactly id,profile_id.
service_role still has SELECT.
The policy set is exactly "missionaries own row key read".
RLS is enabled.
Missionaries is not in supabase_realtime.
There are no service_role statements, no ALTER PUBLICATION, no person_id, and nothing changes in data.
It re-runs safely, including after production's interim anon-only change.
GET /api/donate (packages/api/src/donate/index.ts, GET only)
Keeps the admin-client 503, the requireAuth 401, the tenant 404 and the Stripe-config 500 paths as they were.
On success it returns { publishableKey } only. It no longer reads missionaries, funds or donors, and it ignores designation query params.
Removes the now-unused donateGetQuerySchema and findDonorByProfileId imports. packages/api/src/schemas/donate.ts is untouched (OQ6).
POST is unchanged byte for byte.
Notes and docs
packages/database/collections/registry.ts: only the missionariesCollection note text changes; kind, rls and mutationPolicy stay the same (OQ7).
docs/guides/architecture/data-access-boundary.md: adds a "Missionaries reads" section (server-only, service role, which routes read it, config-only GET /api/donate).
Tests
New Builder suite packages/api/tests/unit/donate-get-config.test.ts (criterion 9). It was red against the old GET (3 failures) and is green now.
Acceptance (tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/**, committed by Acceptance in fbc0fa3): the 3 non-realstack files went from 8 failing / 12 passing to 20/20 passing.
Realstack criteria 1-4 and 11-14 run in "Verify tenant isolation (real stack)" in CI. The build host has no Postgres, so they skip locally.
Needs a ruling before merge: forced RLS on missionaries
The spec (Oct 24) says "RLS stays enabled (not forced, as today)". Since then, #2251 (20261025070000_force_rls_tenant_tables.sql) has forced RLS on every public tenant table, missionaries included. That creates a conflict:
This PR doesn't change the force flag, so it doesn't undo #2251's hardening. As a result the two real-stack expectations above that require "not forced" are expected to fail in CI until the ruling below. Either Acceptance re-pins them to relforcerowsecurity: true, or the spec is amended to un-force. Un-forcing would also need changes to the #2251 and #2253 gates.
Deploy (spec §13)
Apply in order after the backlog and #2312. Never apply it out of order before the backlog: a later run of 20260625002117 would restore the grant and policy. The app change is safe to ship before the migration. Production applies at the next deploy, by Blake.
Donor spine: GET /api/donate is donations code and is covered by Chief's sign-off; the final head goes to Chief before merge.
Flags F1-F5 from the spec still apply:
F2: the metrics route returns 403 if the service-role key is missing.
F3: narrowing GET /api/missionaries and the GraphQL resolvers is follow-up work.
Drop the browser read policies on public.missionaries, revoke anon,
authenticated and PUBLIC privileges, and keep authenticated column SELECT
on id and profile_id for its own row so the donations-side own-missionary
branch still evaluates (OQ1, ruled B). One transaction with pre- and
post-asserts; forward-fix only.
Checkout reads only publishableKey, so GET no longer reads missionaries,
funds or donors. Auth, tenant and Stripe-config checks and their error
responses are unchanged; POST is untouched. Adds the GET config unit suite.

📝 Summary
The migration restricts public.missionaries reads. Authenticated users can read only id and profile_id for their own row. Server code uses the service role for other reads.
GET /api/donate now returns only the tenant’s publishableKey. Existing checks remain, and POST is unchanged.
Added tests for access controls, donation configuration, checkout behavior, and tenant isolation.
Updated the data-access guide, registry note, and CI test wiring. The compatibility bootstrap now grants service_role default SELECT on new public tables.

The PR restricts direct reads of public.missionaries while retaining authenticated access to own-row join keys and service-role access. It changes GET /api/donate to return only the publishable key. It adds migration, route, UI, and real-stack tests, plus documentation and CI updates.
The migration removes browser-facing missionary read policies and grants. It retains authenticated SELECT on id and profile_id for the caller’s own row. It checks service-role access, RLS, policy, and realtime state. Real-stack tests cover migration behavior and unchanged donation and pledge reads. The registry note and architecture guide describe server-only reads.
Donate configuration response and checkout tests packages/api/src/donate/index.ts, packages/api/tests/unit/donate-get-config.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/donate-config.acceptance.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/donor-pages.acceptance.test.tsx
GET /api/donate returns only the publishable key and no longer queries donor or designation data. Tests cover route responses and errors, checkout use of the key, and worker pages rendering mock data without fetching.
Migration, scope, and CI checks tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/static.acceptance.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2155/postgres-ecr-gates.acceptance.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2201/merge-group.acceptance.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2250/static.acceptance.test.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2402/static.acceptance.test.ts, .github/workflows/ci-integration.yml, tests/unit/helpers/workflow-yaml.ts, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2312/public-reads.realstack.acceptance.test.ts
Static checks verify migration contents and change scope. CI commands include the missionaries real-stack test, and workflow assertions accept the updated command and fingerprints.
Asymmetric-al/core#2268: The migration removes broad browser reads and restricts authenticated columns, addressing the broad-read exposure. Service-role routes that return person_id remain outside this change.
Possibly related PRs
Asymmetric-al/core#2410: This PR also changes read access for missionaries, so its access contract overlaps with this change.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Make missionaries reads server-only and GET /api/donate config-only (#2364)" names both main changes: the server-only read restriction on public.missionaries and the config-only GET /api/donate. It matches the changeset and the linked issue #2364. It is not a conventional-commit prefix, so it only partly meets the preferred style in the title requirements.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository's deploy checklist only in part. It covers the migration, API change, tests, and deploy order. It does not tick checklist items for CI status, base branch confirmation, migration testing on development, new env vars, rollback plan, release command, or post-deploy smoke tests. It also leaves an open forced-RLS ruling, and the CI-failure report in the objectives is not reflected in the description.
Resolution
Add the deploy checklist items to the description and mark each one as done, not applicable, or pending. State the base branch and the planned release command. Note the rollback plan, since the migration is forward-fix only. Confirm that the migration was tested on development. Resolve the forced-RLS ruling before merge.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed workflow, compatibility bootstrap, workflow helper, and acceptance fingerprints support execution and validation of #2364. The acceptance harness and issue-specific tests validate the migration and donation behavior. No unrelated product, data, or schema change is shown. The registry change is note-only, and the documentation change covers the requested access boundary.
Full details: Generated Mirrors
Explanation
No generated skill or agent mirror changed in the reviewed PR range. No canonical skill source or sync tooling change was required. The repository defines bun run skills:sync and bun run skills:verify, but this check is not applicable to the changed files.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 14 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
Full details: Tenant Safety
Explanation
The prior tenant-safety failure remains unresolved. The changed static acceptance test removes NO FORCE and then rejects every remaining FORCE token in the migration. The changed migration still contains The force flag set by #2251 is not touched. Therefore the test fails on its own migration comment. The real-stack test expects relforcerowsecurity: true, while the migration has no post-assert for that state. The static and runtime RLS contracts remain inconsistent.
Resolution
Update tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/static.acceptance.test.ts to assert the forced-RLS contract instead of rejecting FORCE. Update the migration comments and architecture documentation to state that #2251 forces public.missionaries. Add a post-assert for relforcerowsecurity = true, or document and test the ordered #2251 and catalog-gate dependency. Rerun the acceptance and tenant-RLS suites.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
#2364 implementation is present in the reviewed head. The migration removes browser grants, keeps only authenticated id and profile_id access, preserves service_role access, and keeps the own-row policy. GET /api/donate returns only publishableKey, and the declared tests, registry note, and documentation are present. The force requirement remains unresolved in the supplied evidence: #2364 states that RLS must not be forced, the migration preserves the existing force state, the acceptance test expects forced RLS, and the description says a ruling is still needed. The latest supplied CI result is also from commit a5154ba, where the real-stack suite failed during fixture setup; no result for reviewed head 0932084e establishes that the acceptance tests now run successfully.
Resolution
Provide the authoritative recorded decision that resolves the #2364 not-forced versus forced-RLS conflict. Provide a real-stack CI result for reviewed head 0932084e. If the fixture setup failure remains, correct the profiles_id_fkey fixture failure before merge.
Full details: Repo Gate Evidence
Explanation
The supplied PR description is truncated before its full validation content. The visible text reports test outcomes and CI behavior, but it does not show runnable validation commands. No complete PR-body metadata is available in the checkout, so the omitted section could change the result.
Resolution
Provide the complete PR description, including its validation section. Confirm that it lists focused Bun/Vitest commands for the donate tests and acceptance tests, plus broader gates appropriate for the API and database changes.

Assert the reconciled RLS-force contract explicitly.
The static check accepts a migration with neither FORCE nor NO FORCE. The real-stack suite skips without TENANT_GUARD_IT_ADMIN_DATABASE_URL, so that state is not checked in this environment. #2364 expects unforced RLS, while #2251/#2253 reportedly require forced RLS. Resolve that contract first, then assert the selected state. Do not require NO FORCE before the conflict is resolved.

factory/review: PASS at bdf005b06c050b35358c3f1e8b79809da6c012e8
Reviewer (independent) for #2364. Engine: Codex gpt-6.1-sol high via Locum job de03509bf5b8, full review plus systems/failure pass; findings below were checked by hand against this head.
Verdict: PASS. No blocking product, workflow or spec findings. CI is still red (migrate, integration-gate, e2e-smoke-gate) because of the two test-harness gaps below; they're follow-ups under review rules, but CI still has to go green before merge.
Findings
MINOR (harness, follow-up): CI's disposable database lacks the hosted service-role grant. The post-assert at supabase/migrations/20261026105000_missionaries_server_only_reads.sql:107-108 correctly requires service_role SELECT on public.missionaries. scripts/sql/supabase-compat-bootstrap.sql creates service_role but gives it no table grant, so the plain-Postgres replay raises service_role lost SELECT and migrate fails before the realstack suites run. The new harness hides this by granting it itself (tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/harness.ts:91). Fix belongs in the bootstrap (hosted-style default grant before replay); keep the production assertion.
MINOR (harness, follow-up): Tighten missionaries read grants to server-only access #2364's realstack suite never runs in CI..github/workflows/ci-integration.yml:101 lists realstack suites explicitly and omits tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/missionaries-reads.realstack.acceptance.test.ts, so the denied-read, preserved donation/pledge access, service-role and rerun checks stay skipped. Add it to that list.
Systems and failure pass
API, GraphQL, RPC, browser collection, view and function callers of missionaries checked; no unexpected reader breaks. Missing-service-key fallbacks are explicitly accepted by the spec.
Donation and pledge own-missionary joins keep the two columns they need (id, profile_id, own row only).
Donate config GET returns only publishableKey; checkout consumes only that field, existing errors are intact, POST unchanged.
Migration ordering, transactional rollback on failure and rerun idempotency pass inspection. No down migration, per the approved forward-fix-only decision. The develop merge's remerge diff is empty.
Pre-existing RLS observation, see private channel.
Tests (review clone, this head): 198 passed, 0 failed, 64 skipped (realstack skipped locally without Postgres). Targeted ESLint, the service-role client gate and diff checks passed.

factory/review: FAIL at a5154ba0c4f055dc43516e4b9b52fb7a156fe1ba
Reviewer (independent) for #2364. Delta review of bdf005b0..a5154ba0 (10 files, +23/−5). bdf005b0 already has PASS (comment). Engine: Codex gpt-6.1-sol (high) via Locum job 7f13e9d642ce, with every finding checked by hand against the code and the CI logs at this head.
Verdict: FAIL, on one MAJOR. The migration and the bootstrap change are correct, and all three of Samson's questions come back clean. But this delta adds the #2364 real-stack suite to the required migrate job, and that suite fails 13 of 13 tests in CI at this head. That turns migrate red, and with it integration-gate and e2e-smoke-gate.
Samson's three questions
The bootstrap reaches only the CI and plain-Postgres replay path: yes. The new ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES IN SCHEMA public GRANT SELECT ON TABLES TO service_role is at scripts/sql/supabase-compat-bootstrap.sql:41. The file lives in scripts/sql/, outside supabase/migrations/. Its executable consumers are scripts/verify/supabase-migrations.mjs:64 (run by ci-integration.yml, and the verifier refuses non-local hosts at :34) and the private-database realstack harnesses: issue-2254/identity.realstack…:245, issue-2256/person-anchor.realstack…:150, issue-2258/current-user-assignments.realstack…:89, issue-2312/public-reads.realstack…:110, issue-2364/harness.ts:58, and issue-2402/harness.ts:102. The other references only read the file's text. No deploy, release or db push path applies it. Hosted seeding (scripts/seed-demo.sh) uses a migration push plus seed.sql, and supabase/config.toml doesn't include this file.
It grants nothing to anon, authenticated or PUBLIC: yes. The statement names only service_role. It has no FOR ROLE, so it applies to tables later created by the executing role. CI connects as postgres and runs the bootstrap and migrations on the same URL, so the default does take effect.
Migration 20261026105000's post-assert stays meaningful: yes. The revoke at supabase/migrations/20261026105000_missionaries_server_only_reads.sql:59 names only anon, authenticated, PUBLIC. The assert at :107-108 checks has_table_privilege('service_role', 'public.missionaries', 'SELECT') on the existing table. Default privileges don't restore an explicit revoke, so a later migration that removed service_role's SELECT would still trip the assert. CI's Apply migrations step succeeds at this head, so the assert passes on plain Postgres.
Findings
MAJOR (CI workflow): the Tighten missionaries read grants to server-only access #2364 real-stack suite is wired into the required migrate job and fails there..github/workflows/ci-integration.yml (the "Verify tenant isolation (real stack)" step) now runs tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/missionaries-reads.realstack.acceptance.test.ts. At this head (job log) all 13 tests fail in fixture setup with 23503 insert or update on table "profiles" violates foreign key constraint "profiles_id_fkey", because the inserted key isn't present in users. The other 7 suites in that step pass (210 passed). The following steps are skipped, and integration-gate and e2e-smoke-gate both fail with migrate as the root cause. Codex's local run skipped the realstack suites because it had no PostgreSQL, so CI is the only real-stack evidence here. A possible cause, not yet verified: the harness seeding around issue-2364/harness.ts:109-120 doesn't line up with the demo-seeded shared CI database (for example, the profiles.id value doesn't match a seeded auth.users row). Fix: make this suite's fixtures pass against the CI database the step provides, and get migrate green on the new head. The product migration needs no change.

New bot threads (none resolved)
Greptile, issue-2364/static.acceptance.test.ts:161, about C10 rejecting three files: stale. At a5154ba0, the allowlist includes ci-integration.yml, supabase-compat-bootstrap.sql and workflow-yaml.ts, and the static suite passes.
CodeRabbit, ci-integration.yml:101, saying criterion 14 should expect forced RLS: stale.missionaries-reads.realstack.acceptance.test.ts:182 already expects relforcerowsecurity: true, which matches the ruling to keep forced RLS. The real CI failure is the FK error in setup above, not this assertion.
CI at a5154ba0
migrate failed (the MAJOR above), and integration-gate and e2e-smoke-gate failed downstream of it. build, typecheck, lint, format, test-unit, acceptance-tests, integrity, compilation-plan and ci-gate passed. The e2e and smoke jobs were skipped.
factory/review: PASS at 0932084eaab870d13a550cb15d008a36f660d73e
Reviewer (independent) for #2364. Delta review of a5154ba0..0932084e, which supersedes the FAIL at a5154ba0 (comment).
Delta scope: one file, tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/harness.ts (+8/−3). It seeds all 10 fixture ids (5 actors plus pD/pM/pO/pS/pB) into auth.users and deletes the trigger-created profiles and memberships before seeding. Test-only; no product, migration, or workflow change.
CI evidence:migrate succeeded (run 40648140532, job 122681658630). The "Verify tenant isolation (real stack)" step ran tests/unit/acceptance/issue-2364/missionaries-reads.realstack.acceptance.test.ts: 13 tests, 13 passed, 0 skipped (step total 223 passed / 6 skipped across 8 files; the 6 skips belong to other issues' suites). The profiles_id_fkey failure that caused the previous FAIL is gone. The Postgres log line missionaries_server_only_reads: public.missionaries must have row level security enabled at 07:13:54 UTC comes from the suite's negative precondition test, not a failure.
Other checks on this head: all green (integration-gate, e2e-smoke-gate, test-e2e, test-e2e-smoke, acceptance-tests, ci-gate, build, typecheck, lint, test-unit); e2e-gate and instant-nav skipped by path filter.
Carried over: the bdf005b0 PASS findings and the a5154ba0 answers still hold: the bootstrap grant is CI-only and service_role-only, and the post-assert is meaningful. Pre-existing RLS observation, see private channel.
Bot review threads: no new bot threads since the a5154ba0 review; earlier threads were triaged there. None resolved by Reviewer.

The spec (Oct 24) says "RLS stays enabled (not forced, as today)". Since then, #2251 (
20261025070000_force_rls_tenant_tables.sql) has forced RLS on every public tenant table, missionaries included. As a result the two real-stack expectations above that require "not forced" are expected to fail in CI until the ruling below. Either Acceptance re-pins them to
relforcerowsecurity: true, or the spec is amended to un-force. Un-forcing would also need changes to the #2251 and #2253 gates.Deploy (spec §13)
