# BriskSeed research branch

This checkout is the authoritative `BriskSeed` branch of CANDOR-Bench, owned
by Hongru Gao (`@hongrugao`). It carries a mature StreamSeed/BriskSeed
implementation and a substantial historical result corpus; it is not an empty
benchmark proposal and should not be evaluated from CANDOR-Bench's generic
landing page alone.

BriskSeed asks when outcomes from earlier approximate-nearest-neighbor searches
remain useful as seeds after inserts, deletes, and workload drift. The mechanism
retrieves a bounded exact or semantic seed, expands it through the native ANN
backend, validates the candidate, and falls back to the same backend when the
seed is stale or unhelpful. Its contribution boundary is the
**reuse--validate--refresh decision over historical search state**. CANDOR-Bench
supplies the dynamic workload and measurement framework; it is a carrier and
baseline, not the BriskSeed mechanism contribution.

## What is already present

- The [`streamseed` plugin](plugins/streamseed/README.md) contains the standalone
Python seam and C++ StreamSeed-Core used for seed-guided search.
- The branch contains dynamic-ANN runbooks, backend integrations, figures, and
historical summary tables for SIFT, SIFT10M, and MSong, including repeated
on/off studies and both favorable and unfavorable backend cells.
- The [advisor claim-boundary paper](paper/advisor_review/main.tex) freezes the
scientific question, strongest controls, correctness oracle, cost accounting,
and stopping rules without rewriting the student's implementation or results.
- The existing BriskSeed slides and student manuscript remain historical
branch artifacts. They show substantial completed work, while their numerical
claims still require one immutable raw-to-figure provenance manifest before
paper promotion.

The next owner deliverable is evidence closure rather than a restart: bind the
exact branch/submodule pins, datasets and ordered update/query streams, backend
parameters, hardware/NUMA identity, raw rows, summary CSVs, and figures into one
reviewable manifest. The matched paper comparison must charge seed lookup,
validation, fallback, writeback, eviction, and memory, and include the strongest
native backend, exact-result caching, periodic rebuild, and an oracle selector.
If the gain disappears after those costs or under a second drift/backend family,
that is a bounded negative regime for seed reuse, not evidence that the broader
CANDOR benchmark or all historical-state reuse is invalid.

The remainder of this README documents the shared CANDOR-Bench carrier.
