Keep a copy of your notes outside the game, or move them between accounts.
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| JSON | Backups. Keeps every note field exactly, including appearance settings, and imports back into BigNoteBox. |
| Markdown | Reading. Plain text that works in any text editor, Obsidian or GitHub. |
For a backup you want to restore later, use JSON.
- Open the settings (
/bnb config) and go to the Backup tab. - Under Export Notes, pick JSON or Markdown.
- Click Export to Clipboard. If the button says Copied!, it is on your clipboard. If WoW blocks the copy, a text box opens with everything selected instead: press Ctrl+C.
- Paste into a text editor and save the file.
- One note: right-click it in the note list and choose Export note (JSON), Export note (MD) or Export note (HTML).
- Several notes: select them in the note list and use the export button to get them as JSON.
Export note (HTML) turns a note into a web page you can open in any browser. Pick a style in the export window:
- Note only: just the note content
- Plain HTML: a simple, complete page
- Stylized: a styled page with a book-like look
If the note has images, put the image files in an img folder next to the saved HTML file.
- Open the settings (
/bnb config) and go to the Backup tab. - Under Import Notes, paste a BigNoteBox JSON or Markdown export.
- Click Import.
Imported notes are added next to your existing notes. Nothing is overwritten, so importing the same backup twice gives you two copies.
You can also copy the SavedVariables files while WoW is closed:
World of Warcraft/_retail_/WTF/Account/<ACCOUNT>/SavedVariables/BigNoteBoxDB.lua (your notes)
World of Warcraft/_retail_/WTF/Account/<ACCOUNT>/SavedVariables/BigNoteBox.lua (your settings)
Put them back the same way, also with WoW closed, to restore everything exactly.
