What

Clients that build their model list by asking a vLLM runtime read /v1/models and drop every entry whose owned_by is not vllm or that carries no max_model_len. A gateway that reports its real owners and sets no context field stays invisible to them, so the operator has to write the model list by hand.

This adds models.vllm_discovery_compat (off by default). With it on:

  • GET /v1/models reports owned_by: "vllm" and fills max_model_len from each model's context window.
  • GET /v1/models/{model} can retrieve a single entry.

Claiming to be vLLM is a lie, so it is opt-in per deployment; nothing changes while the flag is off.

Why it is a separate PR

It was the third commit in #1203. @SantiagoDePolonia asked for that PR to be split down to the upstream-header merge, and this feature has no relation to it, so it moves here on top of main.

Verification

  • go test ./config/... ./internal/server/... ./internal/app/...: green, including the new endpoint tests.
  • go vet ./...: the only output is the pre-existing duplicate json:"content" tags in internal/core.
  • Running with the flag on in a live deployment: /v1/models exposes every model with owned_by: "vllm" and a max_model_len, and the vLLM-only consumer lists them.

This change was AI-assisted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an opt-in compatibility mode for model discovery clients that expect vLLM-formatted model information. When enabled, model listings and individual model responses identify models as owned by vllm and include max_model_len. Provider-reported limits take precedence over configured context windows; if neither provides a limit, the value is 0. The mode is off by default, and provider-reported limits are not exposed when it is disabled.
  • Documentation
    • Added configuration guidance explaining how to enable the compatibility mode and how model ownership and context limits are reported.

Walkthrough

Adds an opt-in setting for vLLM-compatible model discovery. When enabled, model endpoints set each model’s owner to vllm and include max_model_len, using a positive provider-reported limit first, then a positive context window, or zero.

Changes: Model discovery compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and pass the compatibility option
config/config.go, config/models.go, config/config.example.yaml, .env.template, docs/advanced/configuration.mdx, config/config_test.go, internal/app/init_server.go, internal/server/http.go, internal/server/handlers.go
Adds the vllm_discovery_compat setting and documents its YAML and environment names. The default is false. The application passes the setting to the server handler.
Preserve provider-reported model limits
internal/core/types.go, internal/providers/openai/compatible_provider.go, internal/providers/openai/compatible_provider_test.go, internal/providers/registry_list_test.go
Adds a non-serialized field for provider-reported max_model_len. The compatible provider retains positive reported limits and maps them to Metadata.ContextWindow in its dedicated listing path. Tests check limit retention and JSON serialization.
Transform model discovery responses
internal/server/handlers_inference.go, internal/server/models_endpoint.go, internal/server/models_endpoint_test.go
When compatibility is enabled, list and single-model responses set owned_by to vllm. A positive provider-reported limit takes precedence over a positive context window. If neither is positive, max_model_len is 0. Tests cover both setting states and response conversion.

After a restart, compatibility-mode discovery may report a zero limit for a custom model until discovery succeeds again. Persist the limit across cache restores; the bounded issue does not otherwise prevent merging.

Both Greptile findings are addressed:

  • Disabled setting still changed responses — aeb4a90c: when models.vllm_discovery_compat is off, /v1/models now strips a max_model_len a provider reported on its own, so the default listing is what it was before this feature. The new test drives both arms of the setting with a provider that returns the field.
  • Setup instructions missed a requirement — 10e10d7f: the docs now say max_model_len needs a positive metadata.context_window, and name the two ways to supply it for a model the catalog does not know (providers.<name>.models metadata, or a runtime that reports the limit).

go test ./internal/server/ ./config/... green.

Clients that discover models only from a vLLM runtime ask /health and
/v1/models, then drop every entry whose owned_by is not "vllm" or that
carries no max_model_len. A gateway that reports its real owners and no
context field therefore stays invisible to them, and the operator has to
write the model list by hand.

Add models.vllm_discovery_compat: with it on, GET /v1/models reports
owned_by "vllm" and fills max_model_len from each model's context
window. Off by default, because claiming to be vLLM is a lie only a
deployment whose consumer needs it should tell.
Adding MaxModelLen to core.Model also changed a response the setting
promises not to touch: a custom OpenAI-compatible server that returns
`max_model_len` populates the field, and /v1/models re-emitted it with
models.vllm_discovery_compat off.

Strip it when the setting is off, so the default listing is byte-for-byte
what it was before this feature. Tests cover both arms of the setting with
a provider that reports the field.
The compatibility mode only makes a model discoverable when its
`metadata.context_window` is present and positive. Say so, and name the two
ways to supply it for a model the catalog does not know.
…odels settings live

The setting shipped in the code and the configuration guide but not in the
three places every other models.* setting is registered: the example config
operators copy, the env template, and the list clearAllConfigEnvVars empties
so a test cannot inherit a stale value from the caller's shell.

fede-ciliberti force-pushed the feat/vllm-discovery-compat branch from 33892b1 to 70ca1fd Compare October 25, 2026 15:56
Two review findings on the compatibility listing:

- the field lived on core.Model, so an upstream max_model_len populated it and
the registry kept it. /v1/models stripped it, but /admin/models embeds the
same type and served it with the setting off. The listing GET /v1/models
advertises now owns a type with the field; core.Model keeps the value
unserialized, so no other response can carry it and the default listing is
  byte-for-byte what it was.
- the transform rewrote resp.Data in place, so a provider that hands back the
same models on every call had them changed under it. The listing is now
built as a copy and nothing writes to the provider's response.

The provider-reported limit wins over the catalog window: a self-hosted runtime
knows the limit of the process it runs. The plain compatible listing keeps that
value on the model without inventing context_window metadata.
…el gets one

The page named metadata.context_window as the only source, which is wrong twice:
a provider that reports max_model_len supplies the limit itself and wins, and
context_window only fills in for a model whose provider reported none. It also
left the operator without a way to give a window to a model the catalog does
not know, which is the one case where the setting silently does nothing. Both
are now stated, with the YAML to declare it.
@github-actions github-actions Bot added size:L 100-499 effective changed lines (test files excluded in mixed PRs). and removed size:M 30-99 effective changed lines (test files excluded in mixed PRs). labels Oct 25, 2026
A client whose model discovery only understands vLLM decodes the whole
listing against a schema where max_model_len is required, so a single entry
without the field fails the response and every other model disappears with
it. That is how a gateway serving twelve models ended up advertising none:
two of them had no context window in the catalog and no limit from their
provider.

Drop omitempty from the discovery entry so every model carries the field,
zero when the limit is unknown. Zero is not a claim about the window: a
client that reads the value only when it is positive keeps its own default,
which is what makes the entry usable at all.

Preserve the reported limit across cache restore.

The generic openai provider stores a positive upstream max_model_len only in model.MaxModelLen. The cache stores provider metadata but not this field. Since cache loading runs before background discovery, an unknown custom model can return max_model_len: 0 from compat-enabled GET /v1/models until discovery succeeds again.

Persist and restore MaxModelLen with the cached model record.

P2 Reported limits vanish on restart

CompatibleProvider.ListModels stores the reported limit only in MaxModelLen, without setting Metadata.ContextWindow. But SaveToCache saves only discovered metadata, and LoadFromCache never restores MaxModelLen.

While the gateway serves cached models after a restart, compatibility responses advertise a catalog limit or 0 instead of the provider's limit. This lasts until live discovery succeeds. Save and restore the reported limit without exposing it in default responses.
