Collect and validate upstream headers internal/plugins/request_state.go, internal/plugins/request_state_upstream_test.go, internal/core/credential_headers.go, internal/core/credential_headers_test.go, internal/plugins/builtin/headeredit/config.go |
RequestState collects and merges upstream headers from exchanges. Credential checks use the shared core set, which includes x-anthropic-api-key. |
Pass headers through request context internal/core/context.go, internal/server/plugin_chains.go |
Context helpers store plugin upstream headers. The server adds them to the request context when request state contains headers. |
Apply permitted headers to provider requests internal/llmclient/client_request.go, internal/llmclient/plugin_headers_test.go, internal/plugins/builtin/headeredit/plugin.go, docs/advanced/guardrails.mdx, docs/advanced/plugins.mdx |
Request construction merges plugin headers while excluding credential and transport headers. Tests cover header precedence and provider credentials. Documentation describes the headers applied to provider calls. |
Pass headers to response utility calls internal/server/native_response_service.go, internal/server/handlers_test.go, internal/server/native_response_utility_headers_test.go |
Token-counting and compaction calls use the updated request context. Tests verify that both utility calls receive the plugin header. |

Deny Azure and proxy credential headers before plugin merge.
Azure's setHeaders writes Api-Key. Because Api-Key is not denied, a plugin can replace the Azure credential after headerSetter runs. Proxy-Authorization is also classified as a credential header but is not denied, so a plugin can inject it into the outgoing request.
Do not add Transfer-Encoding or Trailer for request-smuggling protection. Go's net/http writer does not use those names from Request.Header. It derives framing from other request fields. The X-Amz-* claim is also not a headerSetter override: Bedrock Mantle applies its authentication transport after buildRequest, and direct Bedrock requests use the AWS SDK. Add an X-Amz- prefix deny rule only if the policy is to prohibit plugins from supplying AWS signing headers.

The test does not cover the Host deny-list assertion correctly.
req.Host is set from the URL by http.NewRequestWithContext. It does not come from req.Header. The assertion at Line 52 would pass even without the Host deny entry. It does not verify the deny-list. Assert req.Header.Get("Host") is empty as well.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Plugin header keys are not canonicalized before the merge.
maps.Copy merges x.Headers.Upstream by raw key. A plugin can write x-foo in one exchange and X-Foo in another, so both keys stay in upstreamHeaders. Downstream, requestHeadersWithPluginOverrides canonicalizes the keys, and map iteration order is random. Which value wins is therefore nondeterministic.
Canonicalize each key while merging. Later exchanges then replace earlier ones deterministically.
Proposed fix
- maps.Copy(s.upstreamHeaders, x.Headers.Upstream)
+ for key, values := range x.Headers.Upstream {
+ s.upstreamHeaders[http.CanonicalHeaderKey(key)] = append([]string(nil), values...)
+ }The maps import then becomes unused. Remove it if no other use exists.

Restrict X-Edge-Proxy-Token to the trusted edge-proxy origin.
When EDGE_PROXY_AUTH_TOKEN is set, both Gemini header setters add it to every request. BaseURL accepts other hosts and cleartext http URLs. The shared client sends the request without removing this header, so the token can be disclosed to a non-proxy destination or over cleartext.
Add the header only when req.URL matches the trusted edge-proxy origin. Do not send it to official Gemini endpoints or arbitrary configured URLs.

Exchange.Headers.Upstreamis the right fix: the plugin API promises it and core only logged it.Could you split the PR?
Keep: the upstream header merge. A few changes:
- Use one shared credential-header list in core instead of a new one. Today there are three lists that disagree (
headeredit/config.go,plugins/request_state.go, and this PR's list). This PR's list missesApi-Key(Azure),Proxy-Authorization,X-Anthropic-Api-KeyandTransfer-Encoding.- Merge duplicate header names that differ only in case the same way every time (currently it depends on map iteration order).
- Update
docs/advanced/plugins.mdx(theUpstreamrow) and theupstream_sethelp text. Note that the headers follow failover attempts and are not sent on token-counting or compaction calls.Drop: the Gemini
EDGE_PROXY_AUTH_TOKENchange. A fixed secret for a proxy in front of one provider is provider config, not plugin or provider-code logic. We'd rather addproviders.<name>.headers, with values that accept secret references:providers: gemini: base_url: https://edge.internal/gemini headers: X-Edge-Proxy-Token: ${EDGE_PROXY_TOKEN}That keeps the token tied to one destination, avoids sending it to Google directly or to failover providers, and gets our secret handling and log scrubbing.
upstream_setstays for non-secret metadata.Happy to take the provider
headers:part ourselves, or you're welcome to open it as a follow-up.

Thanks for the split; this reads much better now. Per-request upstream headers are worth having on their own: observability proxies take request metadata in headers (Helicone-Property-*, Helicone-User-Id, cf-aig-metadata, x-portkey-trace-id), and a headeredit instance scoped to a user path can tag one tenant's traffic. A few changes before merging.
Must fix
1. Gateway-internal calls inherit the headers. They ride on the request context, so every call made from that context sends them. A response-phase llmjudge call goes through host.Complete (internal/plugins/host.go), whose context keeps the request's values, so the judge call carries the user's headers (for example a Helicone-User-Id that bills the judge call to that user). buildRequest already handles this for Idempotency-Key (internal/llmclient/client_request.go:302). Please apply the same check at the top of requestHeadersWithPluginOverrides:
if core.GetRequestOrigin(ctx) != core.RequestOriginExternal {
return reqHeaders
}and add a test where a call with plugin origin carries no plugin header.
Should fix
2. The deny list is the only guard, not the order of operations. headerSetter runs at line 284, before the merge, and the merge deletes and replaces matching headers. So "the provider always wins" / "the provider always sets its own credentials last" (the comment in buildRequest, docs/advanced/plugins.mdx, the PR description) doesn't hold. Two concrete gaps:
xi-api-key(ElevenLabs,internal/providers/elevenlabs/elevenlabs.go:22) is missing fromcore.credentialHeaders, so a plugin can replace that key. Adding it also fixes audit redaction for that header.- Setting
anthropic-betareplaces theoauth-2025-04-20flag Anthropic OAuth keys need (internal/providers/anthropic/anthropic.go:211), so those calls fail. Either deny it, merge the values, or document it.
3. Thin transport deny list. Please also deny Accept-Encoding (setting it turns off Go's automatic gzip decompression, so the gateway would get compressed bytes it can't parse), Content-Type, and the hop-by-hop headers (Connection, Te, Trailer, Upgrade, Expect).
Docs and release notes
- State that the headers go to every provider attempt, including failover to a different provider. For metadata headers that's usually right, but it's a commitment that is hard to narrow later.
- Release note: deployments that already filled in
upstream_set(documented as "recorded but not forwarded") start sending those headers on upgrade. - Mention in the description that plugins now see
api-keyandx-goog-api-keyon inbound requests redacted. It's a good change, but a behaviour change of its own. - Use a per-request example in the docs and help text (
Helicone-Property-*) rather than a proxy token.headereditrefusestoken/secretnames anyway. - Nit:
core.PluginUpstreamHeadersreturns the stored map. Say in its comment that callers must treat it as read-only, the wayRequestLabelsFromContextdoes.
On the edge-proxy token
A fixed secret for one provider is provider config, as you said when splitting. With plugin headers it would also follow failover to other providers. I opened #1290 for providers.<name>.headers: static, per provider, with secret references, masking and dashboard support. That's the place for the Gemini edge token.

Two prompt-phase plugins writing "x-foo" and "X-Foo" kept two keys in the request state. The provider client canonicalizes when it applies them, so which value reached the provider depended on map iteration order. Canonicalize on the way in. Later exchanges now replace earlier ones deterministically, whatever case each plugin used. Tests: `internal/plugins`.
Three lists disagreed: core's audit-redaction list, the plugin request state's inbound redaction list, and the merge in `llmclient` that decides which plugin headers may reach a provider call. The merge list was the shortest one, so it let a plugin override Azure's `api-key` header and `X-Anthropic-Api-Key`, and it had no entry for `Proxy-Authorization`. `core.IsCredentialHeader` is now the one list. The request state and the header-editing plugin call it instead of keeping their own copy, and `llmclient` combines it with a short transport list (`Host`, `Content-Length`, `Transfer-Encoding`) that is about the connection, not credentials. Add `x-anthropic-api-key` to the shared list, which the header-editing plugin already rejected. Tests: `internal/core`, `internal/plugins`, `internal/plugins/builtin/headeredit`, `internal/llmclient` (including the Azure `api-key` case).
Token counting and compaction run the prompt chain through `utilityRequest`, so a prompt-phase plugin can set `Headers.Upstream` on those requests too. The handler never attached the captured headers to the request context, so a provider behind an authenticating proxy accepted generation calls and rejected these two. Call `applyPluginRequestHeaders` after the chain runs, and re-read the context from the request afterwards: the provider call was using the context captured before the headers were attached. Tests: `TestResponsesUtilityRoutesCarryPluginUpstreamHeaders` drives both routes and fails without the call or without the context refresh.
`Headers.Upstream` and `upstream_set` claimed the headers were recorded but not forwarded. They now reach every provider call of the request: failover attempts, token counting and compaction included. Credential and transport headers are refused, and the provider sets its own credentials last.
The httptest handler runs in another goroutine and wrote `received` for the assertions to read, with no synchronization: a data race under `-race`. Send the cloned headers through a buffered channel and read them after `Do` returns. `go test -race ./internal/llmclient/` is green.
The existing assertion read req.Host, which net/http sets from the URL and never from req.Header, so it passed whether or not Host was denied. Assert the header map as well: without the deny entry the plugin value lands there and the test now fails.
Gateway-internal inference issued by a plugin (a guardrail's LLM judge) runs on a context derived from the request that triggered it, so it inherited the headers the prompt phase recorded for the client's provider call and sent them to the model the gateway picked for itself. The merge now returns the request headers untouched unless the origin is external, the same signal idempotency-key forwarding uses.
xi-api-key joins the shared credential list, so ElevenLabs keys are no longer forwarded from a plugin and no longer reach the audit log unredacted. Transport gains the connection-framing headers (Connection, Te, Trailer, Upgrade, Expect) and the body-encoding ones the gateway and the provider decide (Accept-Encoding, Content-Type). anthropic-beta gets its own list: the Anthropic provider adds oauth-2025-04-20 in a header hook this merge runs after, so a plugin value would drop the flag subscription credentials need.
The Upstream row claimed the provider always wins. The merge runs after the provider's header hook, so a plugin value replaces the provider's too; only credential, transport/body and provider-negotiated names are refused. The new Upstream headers section lists those names, says the headers ride every provider attempt and the token-counting and compaction calls but not the inference a guardrail issues through its own Host, and carries a per-request Helicone-Property example. It also notes that installations already setting these headers start sending them after the upgrade. The de, pl and zh rows said the field was recorded and not forwarded; they now describe what ships.
`header_edit`'s `upstream_set` and ADR-0012 still described only the three transport headers the first version refused. The merge also refuses the rest of the hop-by-hop set, `Content-Type`, `Accept-Encoding`, and `anthropic-beta`, so list them where an operator looks for them. ADR-0012 keeps section 10 as the record of the release it was written for, but `Headers.Upstream` is no longer deferred: say what the host does with it now, and that gateway-internal inference carries none of them.

Compare
`Content-Encoding` was missing, and so were `Keep-Alive`, `Proxy-Connection` and `Proxy-Authenticate`. A plugin setting `Content-Encoding: gzip` labels the uncompressed JSON the gateway sends, and the provider fails the request; a hop-by-hop header it sets is meaningless to the provider and can confuse the connection. Add them to the transport list and group the map by what each entry protects — connection framing, the body the gateway encoded, response compression — so the next addition lands in the right place. Tests: `internal/llmclient`, one case per name, tied to the map length.
`/v1/messages/count_tokens` reached the provider without the headers a prompt-phase plugin wrote to `Exchange.Headers.Upstream`. The inference paths and the Responses utility routes attach them, this one did not, so a provider behind an authenticating proxy answered generation calls and rejected the count. Call `applyPluginRequestHeaders` before the count, which also hands the refreshed context to the call below, the same pattern the other routes use. Tests: `internal/server`, a counter that records the headers its context carries; it fails without the call.
Three claims were wrong or missing. The section said the host logs the header values; it logs how many a plugin set and nothing else, so say that. Every provider call was claimed, but Bedrock reaches AWS through its own SDK and never goes through `buildRequest`, so scope the promise to the gateway's HTTP client and name the exception where the field, the section and `upstream_set` describe it. `Accept-Encoding` sat with the headers that describe the request body; it negotiates response compression, and setting it turns off the transport's automatic gzip decompression. Give it its own group, add `Content-Encoding` and the remaining hop-by-hop names, and bring the de, pl and zh pages to the same contract: the translated pages still described the field as recorded and not forwarded, with no Upstream headers section at all.
The help text promised "every provider call of the request". Bedrock calls the AWS SDK directly, and inference the gateway issues for its own work — a guardrail's judge — deliberately drops the headers. Both are visible to an operator filling the field in, so name them there.
The English section still grouped `Accept-Encoding` with the headers that describe the request body and stopped at the three transport names the first version denied. It now matches the list the merge runs — the hop-by-hop set, the body headers including `Content-Encoding`, and `Accept-Encoding` named for what it does, which is negotiate response compression — and the translated sections that landed with it. Tests: `npx mint validate`.

The bullet said every provider attempt carries the headers "to the provider" and named the same upstream for the token-counting and compaction calls. A failover can resolve to a different provider and a different base URL, so the headers follow whichever upstream that attempt selected, not the client's. Same fix in de, pl and zh. The `upstream_set` help also said only credential and transport headers are refused; `Anthropic-Beta` is refused too, from its own list, so name it.
What
Exchange.Headers.Upstreamis documented as adding headers to the providercall, but the host only logged the field. Prompt-phase plugins therefore
cannot set provider-bound headers such as an edge proxy token, or the
per-tenant metadata an observability proxy in front of the provider reads.
This change keeps the headers a plugin writes to
Exchange.Headers.Upstreamin the request state, carries them on the request context, and merges them
into every outgoing provider request in
llmclient(allDo*paths sharebuildRequest). Header names are canonicalized when the state merges them, sox-fooandX-Foono longer race on map iteration order.Where the headers land
included: each attempt is built from the same request context.
/v1/responses/input_tokens,/v1/responses/compact): both run the prompt chain, so a prompt-phaseplugin reaches them too. The handler now attaches the captured headers and
re-reads the context, which the provider call was reading before they were
set.
judge calls the provider through the plugin
Hoston the request context,so without a gate it would carry the client's headers — a
Helicone-User-Idwould bill the judge call to that user. The merge returnsthe request headers untouched unless
core.GetRequestOrigin(ctx)isRequestOriginExternal, the same signalIdempotency-Keyforwardingalready uses.
What a plugin cannot set
Three deny lists, so credentials, framing and provider feature negotiation stay
out of plugin control:
core.IsCredentialHeader, the one shared list(
Authorization,Proxy-Authorization,Cookie,Set-Cookie,x-api-key,api-keyfor Azure,x-goog-api-key,x-anthropic-api-key,xi-api-key,x-auth-token,x-access-token,x-gomodel-key).Host,Content-Length,Transfer-Encoding,Connection,Te,Trailer,Upgrade,Expect.Content-Type,Accept-Encoding— setting the latterturns off Go's automatic gzip decompression, and the gateway would get bytes
it cannot parse.
anthropic-betais refused on its own. TheAnthropic header hook adds
oauth-2025-04-20for subscription credentials, and the merge runs after that hook, so a plugin value would drop the flag and
Anthropic would reject the request. The provider sets its own headers first
and the deny lists — not the order of operations — are what keep its
credentials: for every other name the plugin value wins, deliberately, since
that is what the field is for.
Behaviour changes for existing installations
upstream_setheaders. Releases documented itas "recorded but not forwarded", so a deployment that already filled it in
had those values stored and dropped. They now reach the provider, or the
proxy in front of it, for the first time. Check the upstream accepts them
before rolling the upgrade out.

Authorization,X-Api-Key,Proxy-Authorization,Cookie), soapi-key,x-goog-api-key,x-anthropic-api-key,xi-api-key,x-auth-token,x-access-tokenandx-gomodel-keyreached a plugin in clear. It now calls the sharedcore.IsCredentialHeaderand they arrive as[redacted]. This also fixesaudit redaction and tag-source rejection for those names, and it is visible
to any plugin that reads
Headers.Request.header_editvalidation rejects three more names. It shares the samelist, so a config that sets or removes
xi-api-key,x-access-tokenorx-gomodel-keynow fails at load with "carries credentials" instead ofbeing accepted.
