nx2: get Star Fox (#533) past boot and rendering - #556
Star Fox stopped on "Launching..." at 0 FPS, then rendered only black once it booted.
nx2_gsv: report 4 KiB native image alignment. The SDK rejected the window buffers (8 KiB required, 4 KiB offset), dropped the window and later called through a null pointer.
audio: implement hwopus command 100 (OpenHardwareAudioCodecClient) and the hwacod client/manager it opens, decoding Opus and multistream Opus with libopus into the shared completion ring.
lower_to_maxwell: lower TXD with a uniform-register handle (0xf6c) to TXD.B, I2F.U16 from a uniform register (0xd06), and ULDC U8/S8/U16/S16 with alignment matching the width.
kepler_compute: let the upscale fallback convert formats when no same-format pair exists (Star Fox: R16G16B16A16 to A8B8G8R8).
Known issue: about a minute into gameplay it crashes with SIGFPE in RADV under TextureCacheRuntime::ReinterpretImage.
I have read and followed the Coding Guidelines to the best of my ability.
Gets Star Fox (#533) from a hang on "Launching..." to rendering in-game. It still crashes about a minute into gameplay (see Known issues), so I'm opening this as a draft.
What was wrong
Boot hang: we reported 8 KiB alignment for native images, but Star Fox puts its window buffers at a 4 KiB offset. The SDK rejected them, removed the native window, and later called through a null pointer while acquiring a frame.
Audio: after that, hwopus command 100 (OpenHardwareAudioCodecClient) was auto-stubbed without returning the interface, so the SDK called through a null object.
Black screen: frames were being presented, but every one was empty:
Scene passes use TXD with the texture handle in a uniform register (0xf6c), which wasn't lowered, so those draws were skipped.
The final pass into the window image uses I2F.U16 from a uniform register (0xd06) and ULDC.U16 at 2-byte-aligned offsets (0xab9). Both were rejected, so the window image was never written.
The game's tensor upscaler (1080p to 4K) can't run, and the upscale fallback only handled same-format pairs. Star Fox goes R16G16B16A16 to A8B8G8R8, so the 4K image stayed empty.
Changes
nx2_gsv.h: native image alignment is 4 KiB instead of being derived from block height.
audio/nx2_hardware_audio_codec_*: new hwacod client and manager behind hwopus command 100. They decode Opus and multistream Opus through libopus into the shared completion ring and signal the completion event.
lower_to_maxwell.h: lowerings for 0xf6c (TXD with a bindless handle, to TXD.B), 16-bit 0xd06, and narrow-width ULDC with width-matched alignment.
kepler_compute.cpp: when no same-format upscale pair exists, the fallback converts between the formats at the title slots (cbuf0+0x90 to +0xa0). Existing same-format matches are tried first and behave as before.
Testing
Star Fox NUP (0400E88025B1A000, base + update), docked, Vulkan on RADV, Ryzen 7 5800X, GPU accuracy Low.
Boots, decodes audio (real PCM), shows "The Lylat System" intro and gets into the first mission at about 30 FPS.
Mario Kart World was boot-tested with the alignment change only. The shader and upscale changes haven't been regression-tested on other titles yet.

After (intro)
After (in mission)
Known issues
About a minute into gameplay: SIGFPE (integer divide by zero) in RADV's radv_get_binning_state, under vkCmdCopyBufferToImage from TextureCacheRuntime::ReinterpretImage. Not investigated yet.
The upscale is a plain bilinear copy, not the game's network, so the image is softer than on hardware.

The changes add an NX2 hardware audio codec service, extend Ampere shader lowering, update compute texture upscaling to handle supported format conversions, and set NX2 image-layout alignment to 4 KiB.
Changes: NX2 hardware audio codec

Adds codec and shared-memory data structures, declares the client service, includes the new sources in core, and exposes the client through the existing Opus decoder manager.
Client sizing and manager creation src/core/hle/service/audio/nx2_hardware_audio_codec_client.cpp
Adds instance and manager work-buffer sizing commands and validates inputs before creating a manager and returning its ID, object, and completion event.
The new cross-format upscale path can pick the wrong texture pair, or decode a non-float 16-bit-per-channel source as float. This could leave Star Fox, or other titles that hit this path, with incorrect colors or a skipped upscale. These issues should be addressed before merge or explicitly accepted. The boot and black-screen fix and the audio codec additions have no confirmed blocking defects in this review.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to fbd11
The new audio interface performs writes to guest-selected memory without establishing that the selected pages are writable. Handle ownership and size checks constrain access, but memory authorization and recovery after partial execution need clarification.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The new codec path treats mappedness as sufficient authorization for writes into a caller-selected process range. OpenManager does not establish writable-page permissions, while manager construction, PCM output, and completion publication use direct memory writes that do not enforce those guest permissions. This creates a path for service-mediated modification of mapped guest regions that may be read-only. Typed process handles and transfer-memory ownership constrain the target; unauthorized cross-process access and host compromise are not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The direct memory target is the nominated process's guest address space. Invocation requires access to the Opus service and valid typed process and same-owner transfer-memory handles. A process handle alone is not evidence of unauthorized cross-process access; effects through aliased mappings and broader permissions were not established. Native decoding executes in the emulator process, but no host-escape path was demonstrated.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A guest possessing the required handles can select a mapped range and completion offset unrelated to that range's write permissions. Manager creation immediately writes ring metadata there; execution adds completion and PCM writes. The missing permission check is introduced through this new access path, although the underlying direct-memory helpers already existed.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The implementation checks manager, instance, and IO identifiers; limits input and output capacities; checks available completion entries; and validates the copied packet length before native decoding. Block-memory operations also reject addresses outside the process address space. These controls counter simple layout-based host overrun paths, but do not establish writable-region authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Execution is not batch-atomic: decoder state and PCM output may change before completion publication fails, and earlier completions remain committed. A completion-write failure returns before the final event signal. The available evidence does not define retry, slot ownership, or guest publication-ordering guarantees, so recovery remains uncertain rather than a demonstrated broader security failure.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Establish permission-aware authorization for the registered input, output, and completion regions, including their mapping lifetime. Define slot ownership, completion publication ordering, and partial-batch recovery so retries cannot silently reuse advanced decoder state or strand completed work without notification.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the Star Fox fix and the boot and rendering goal, which matches the main thrust of the changeset and the PR objectives. The changeset adds the NX2 hardware audio codec (hwopus command 100), native-image alignment changes, shader lowerings, and upscale fallback changes that serve that goal. The title is concise and specific, and it does not describe anything absent from the change. It mentions the linked issue number, which is minor noise but acceptable. The PR objectives state the fix covers boot and black screen only, and the title says 'past boot and rendering', which is slightly broader than the stated scope because the PR reports a later gameplay crash as a known issue.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #533 requires Star Fox to boot. The PR reports that Star Fox boots, decodes audio, displays the intro, and reaches the first mission. The changed alignment, hwopus command 100, shader lowerings, and format-converting upscale fallback directly address the reported launch hang and black output. The later RADV SIGFPE is declared as a known issue and is outside the stated boot requirement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within issue #533 scope. Native-image alignment supports window creation. The hardware audio codec prevents the boot-time null interface. Maxwell lowerings and format conversion produce the missing rendered frames. The audio, shader, and upscale code are supporting implementation for the reported boot and rendering behavior. No unrelated change is identified.

Account for TIC component types.
The mixed-format path maps the base R16G16B16A16 format to R16G16B16A16_FLOAT, but TIC component types support non-float variants. If the title-4 input at slot 0x90 uses one of those variants, the blit can decode the source with the wrong format and produce incorrect colors.
Use the TIC component types when selecting the render-target format, or reject non-float R16G16B16A16 inputs.

Check the convertible title 4 pair before the generic scan.
The generic scan at lines 931-946 runs unless the pair at 0x90/0xa0 is a valid same-format pair. A convertible mixed-format pair fails that check, so the scan still runs. If the scan finds a same-format pair in 0x80..0x11c, it sets input and output to that pair. The conversion fallback at lines 948-954 then does not run. The blit can use the unrelated pair, or line 955 can return false when that pair's format has no render-target mapping.
A valid same-format pair at 0x90/0xa0 does not reach this path, because the scan is skipped in that case.
Prefer the convertible 0x90/0xa0 pair over the generic scan. Keep the scan as the fallback when that pair is not convertible. This order also changes the selected pair for any title that has a convertible 0x90/0xa0 pair and a same-format scan match.

ShouldReinterpret() routes colour <-> depth-stencil aliases through
ReinterpretImage on devices without VK_EXT_shader_stencil_export (NVIDIA),
and D32_FLOAT_S8_UINT aliases on every device. Its staging-buffer copies
were invalid:
- VkBufferImageCopy regions with aspectMask DEPTH|STENCIL. A region may
name only one aspect (VUID-VkBufferImageCopy-aspectMask-09103). Copy the
depth aspect only.
- vkCmdCopyBufferToImage with VK_IMAGE_LAYOUT_GENERAL after the barrier
moved the destination to TRANSFER_DST_OPTIMAL
(VUID-vkCmdCopyBufferToImage-dstImageLayout-00180).
Star Fox (0400E88025B1A000) lost the device about 20 ms after these copies,
60-90 s into gameplay, on an RTX 5080 (drivers 616.64 and 621.14). With this
change the two validation errors are gone and a 30 minute session ran
without device loss. Upstream Eglantine-Community/Eglantine#556 reports the same point
as a SIGFPE in RADV under ReinterpretImage; that path was not tested here.
Stencil is not carried through this reinterpret; a complete fix would pack
depth-stencil with a shader.
