Summary

Fixes several bugs across the Ampere-to-Maxwell shader lowering pass, Maxwell frontend instruction decoders, and texture cache address/remap handling:

  • shader_recompiler/ampere (lower_to_maxwell.h):
    • Ampere RED.E (0x98e): Allow signed 20-bit immediate byte offsets on register-addressed global reductions ([Ra + offset]), matching uniform-addressed reductions ([URa + offset]).
    • Ampere SURED (0x59f): Generalize bound-descriptor surface reductions across dimensions (1D..3D, codes 0..5), integer types (U32/S32), and atomic operations (ADD..XOR) by lowering to Maxwell SUATOM with destination RZ.
    • Ampere SHF.R.U32 (0x219, 0xa19, 0xc19): Forward the .W (wrap) bit (bit 75 -> bit 39) when lowering 32-bit low-word logical right shifts to SHR.
  • shader_recompiler/maxwell:
    • ISBERD: Fix the imm bitfield width from 8 bits to 7 bits (BitField<24, 7, u32>) so it no longer overlaps skew at bit 31.
    • AST: Remove the early NotImplementedException("Indexed store") guard that blocked the existing HandleIndexed path, and add the instruction's base offset to the indexed attribute offset.
  • video_core/texture_cache:
    • ImageBase::TryFindBase: Compare other_addr - gpu_addr as a 64-bit value (diff64) before narrowing to u32, preventing GPU address deltas >= 4 GiB from wrapping around and matching false subresources.
    • UnmapGPUMemory & MarkLayersRemapped: Skip Unbacked images on GPU unmap and track partial layer remaps on large layered images via MarkLayersRemapped instead of invalidating all layers.
    • FindImage, JoinImages, and FindDMAImage: Check image_allocs_table and fall back to ForEachImageInRegionGPU when CPU region lookups do not match, ensuring unbacked/GPU-mapped images are found reliably.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

This change updates Ampere and Maxwell instruction translation. It also changes texture-cache address lookup, overlap handling, and layer remapping.

Changes: Shader instruction translation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ampere operand tracking
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
Register-pressure preparation tracks operands for opcodes 0x59f and 0x98e, including their spans. Uniform-bank detection and shadow checks also account for these operands.
Ampere reduction and shift lowering
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h
0x98e accepts validated signed offsets for register and uniform addresses. 0x59f lowers supported surface reductions to SUATOM. Low-word right-shift lowering forwards bit 75.
Maxwell immediate decoding and attribute stores
src/shader_recompiler/frontend/maxwell/translate/impl/internal_stage_buffer_entry_read.cpp, src/shader_recompiler/frontend/maxwell/translate/impl/load_store_attribute.cpp
ISBERD decodes a 7-bit immediate, leaving bit 31 for skew. AST selects its offset based on the index register and supports indexed non-patch stores with that offset. Indexed patch stores remain unsupported.

Texture cache address and remap handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Image address lookup
src/video_core/texture_cache/image_base.cpp, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h
TryFindBase checks the address difference before narrowing it. FindImage, JoinImages, and FindDMAImage add GPU-region and synthetic-address lookup paths. JoinImages also avoids duplicate overlap processing and linear aliases.
Partial layer remapping
src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache_base.h, src/video_core/texture_cache/texture_cache.h
UnmapGPUMemory skips fully unbacked images unless they have sparse-layer or unwritten-sparse state. Partial layer-upload unmaps mark affected layers. MarkLayersRemapped records those layers.

Suggested labels: game-support

Suggested reviewers: camillelavey, takoroka

Merge Risk: High · up to 59c4b

Texture-cache remaps can leave stale data, and indexed attribute stores can be rejected by the GLSL backend. These unresolved correctness issues, along with the pending GPU split request issue, make the change unsafe to merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 59c4b

One new lookup fallback can reuse an image without preserving its address-space ownership. The demonstrated scope is shared graphics-cache state; cross-process disclosure or host compromise has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new allocation-table fallback in FindImage, JoinImages, and FindDMAImage searches a global GPU-address key after address-space-scoped lookup fails, without checking candidate ownership. With matching GPU virtual addresses and compatible synthetic sparse images, this can select or alias another address space's image. Sparse images lacking CPU map entries distinguish this newly reachable case from the pre-existing global lookup of ordinary synthetic images. Cross-channel content confusion is plausible; runtime collision frequency and cross-process exploitability remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The ownership concern affects image resources shared by channels using this texture-cache instance. Separate memory managers have distinct identities and channel-specific GPU lookup storage, but the allocation fallback can span those identities. The inspected source does not establish exposure across host processes, tenants, or environments.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A workload able to arrange compatible images at the same GPU virtual address in distinct address spaces could make a lookup miss its current CPU and GPU indexes, then select a foreign synthetic sparse image from the global allocation vector. The resulting image can satisfy view lookup, DMA lookup, or alias processing. This is a statically supported ownership-bypass path, not a demonstrated exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new fallback retains remapped-image rejection and image compatibility checks. It also requires synthetic CPU addresses for allocation candidates. These controls constrain candidate shape and state, but do not verify address-space ownership.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Repeated partial-remap notifications accumulate dirty-layer bits. Normal refresh consumes those bits and uploads through the current GPU memory manager rather than directly reading retained CPU addresses. Full-remap handling still marks the image remapped, and deletion removes allocation-vector entries. These are static normal-path observations, not proof of interruption-safe recovery.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Implement indexed stores in the GLSL backend.

An indexed AST now reaches EmitSetAttributeIndexed, but the GLSL emitter throws NotImplementedException. Shaders using this instruction still fail to compile with GLSL. Implement the emitter before enabling this path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Shadow the data operand of RED.E and SURED.

The shadow scan skips bits 32–39 for opcodes 0x98e and 0x59f. A data register in the reserved range is therefore read without a shadow copy. Without a uniform bank, the reserved range starts at R246. With a uniform bank, it starts at high_uniform_base, which is at most 216. For example, SURED with data R246 emits that register unchanged at bit 20. Reserved registers live in bank 1, so the reduction can add a value other than the guest value. The pre-existing fixed forms had the same gap. The new 3D forms reach it through the same path.

Add bit 32 to the shadowed operands for both opcodes. Add the operands to PrepareRegisterPressure. The SURED coordinate count follows the dimension rule used in the lowering.

Use a signed image path for S32 MIN/MAX in GLSL.

SURED preserves the S32 type and the Maxwell translator marks MIN/MAX as signed, but the GLSL backend declares the image as uimage* with r32ui. The signed emitters then pass int(...) to imageAtomicMin and imageAtomicMax. This is not the signed image overload and can produce invalid or unsigned behavior for values such as 1 and -1.

Use a signed image representation for S32 MIN/MAX, or implement signed MIN/MAX with a supported representation. Keep the SPIR-V path, which selects OpAtomicSMin and OpAtomicSMax.

Allow RZ as a one-dimensional coordinate.

For dimension 0 or 1, coordinate == 255 represents coordinate zero, but this check rejects it. The downstream translator reads one register for these dimensions, so it can handle RZ. Allow RZ for the single-coordinate forms. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve indexed stores to built-in outputs.

The SPIR-V indexed-store switch handles position, generics, and clip distances, but not PointSize, Layer, or ViewportIndex. For example, an indexed store to byte offset 0x6c reaches the default return and silently drops the point-size write. Add cases for supported built-in outputs. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Wake BackLoop for idle-hook requests.

When Scheduler::WaitSubmitted() calls RequestIdleHook() without publishing ring work, a sleeping BackLoop does not observe the request. Deferred work can remain unsubmitted, and WaitSubmitted() can wait indefinitely.

Restore the wake increment and notification. Check hook_requested before entering the blocking wait and after waking.

Re-register the image when a partial GPU remap changes CPU backing.

After a partial remap, this branch keeps the image registered at its original cpu_addr. MarkLayersRemapped marks the affected layers dirty. RefreshContents then clears CpuModified and uploads those layers. Neither step updates image.cpu_addr, the image's map view, or its CPU page-table entries.

A later CPU write to the new backing does not match the image's old CPU range in ForEachImageInRegion. The cached layer can then stay stale. The image has one cpu_addr and no per-layer CPU address. Re-register the image at its new CPU range, or replace the image when its CPU mapping changes. The inspected code does not establish a safe localized diff, so this remedy has no patch.

Scope exact-address candidates to the current memory mapping.

image_allocs_table is keyed only by GPU address. A retained image after a partial remap can keep stale CPU backing and still pass the exact-address shape or subresource checks. The exact-address path then reuses or joins that image before the CPU-region lookup checks the current backing. The shared table also has no address-space key, while GPU-region scans are address-space scoped.

Check each allocation-table candidate against the current address space and CPU backing before accepting it in FindImage, JoinImages, and FindDMAImage.

Shadow the full 3D coordinate span before lowering.

For 0x59f with a 3D surface, the coordinate span starts at the bit-24 register. When uses_uniform_bank is false, shadow_boundary is 244. The shadow trigger checks only that encoded start register, so a span starting at R242 is not shadowed. The third coordinate, R244, is then read as a native register inside the reserved range. The reduction can therefore access the wrong image coordinate.

Extending the trigger to the full span does not fix this on its own. The rewrite changes only the encoded start register, so the copied group does not rename the implicit third coordinate. The coordinate vector needs a contiguous remap that moves all of its registers.

Use relative_offset for indexed AST stores.

When ast.index_reg != IR::Reg::RZ, the instruction uses the signed 11-bit relative_offset field. This code still derives offset from the unsigned 10-bit absolute_offset field. A valid -4 displacement becomes 0x3fc, so the store targets final_offset + 1020 instead of final_offset - 4. Decode the indexed displacement from ast.relative_offset.Value() and pass it to Imm32 as s32; keep absolute_offset for direct stores. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Process remaps for bound sparse layers.

Deduplicate linear alias candidates in region_check.

A linear image with the same GPU address and pitch can be visited by the CPU scan, the GPU scan, and the exact-address fallback. Each visit appends its ID to join_left_aliased_ids. The alias loop then creates duplicate alias entries, and DeleteImage later asserts on num_removed_aliases == 1.

Skipping the fallback would remove only its extra visit. The CPU and GPU scans can still add the same ID twice. Check for the ID at the push site.

Suggested fix

             if (info.pitch == overlap.info.pitch && gpu_addr == overlap.gpu_addr) {
                 // Alias linear images with the same pitch
-                join_left_aliased_ids.push_back(overlap_id);
+                if (std::ranges::find(join_left_aliased_ids, overlap_id) ==
+                    join_left_aliased_ids.end()) {
+                    join_left_aliased_ids.push_back(overlap_id);
+                }

Linear alias candidates can be added more than once to join_left_aliased_ids
when region_check visits them through multiple scans or the exact-address
fallback. At the push site in region_check, check whether overlap_id is already
present and append it only if absent, preserving the existing alias checks and
candidate collection.

Invalidate unwritten placeholders when memory is remapped.

UnwrittenSparse images have Unbacked set and SparseLayers clear. This branch therefore skips them. FindImage and JoinImages ignore only images marked Remapped, so the placeholder can remain eligible after the mapping changes. Mark UnwrittenSparse images as remapped.

Invalidate sparse-tile images on mapping changes.

SparseTiles images also have Unbacked set, so this branch skips them. When a guest maps a previously reserved tile, the image remains eligible for lookup without refreshing that tile. It can therefore render stale or zero data. Include SparseTiles in the exceptions and invalidate or refresh its affected tiles. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
