Fix Welcome Tour startup and native texture rendering - #630
The implementation, function documentation, and regression tests were generated with OpenAI Codex. It was also used for source research, debugging, automated builds and gameplay checks, and drafting the commit message and PR description.
Summary
Welcome Tour was stopping at nx2:gsv command 1121. Returning a session lets it boot, but character selection and the first tour area still had black scenery and yellow-tinted models. This fixes the reply and the texture instructions used by those scenes.
Return a raw session for command 1121, with a TIPC handshake that echoes its token and a probe that returns zero. The session behavior follows Eden-NS2's implementation.
Support native per-pixel texture gather offsets and preserve both offset registers before writing aliased outputs. Native gather offsets use signed 8-bit values.
Let array depth comparison samples use the existing general texture lowering, including their own descriptor bank.
Fix the low/high half-float channel order when packing texture results, and bump the native shader cache salt so cached shaders are rebuilt.
Add regression tests for half-float packing, mixed descriptor banks, and per-pixel gathers with aliased outputs.

Built the Release desktop and CLI targets with MSVC and tested Vulkan on an RTX 4070 SUPER. The Ampere suite passed all 240 assertions in 35 test cases.
Game tested: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour. A run with a new save reached character selection and the opening info desk tutorial. Scenery is visible and character colors are corrected in those scenes. Captured frames were compared with actual Switch 2 gameplay. Later tour areas, other games, and other GPUs haven't been tested.

Summary
New Features
Added support for an additional graphics-system session, with validated handshakes and session responses.
Bug Fixes
Improved texture gather handling for offset formats, including per-pixel offsets.
Corrected channel packing for half-precision texture results.
Updated depth-comparison sampling for 2D array textures.
Tests
Added coverage for texture packing, array depth sampling, and per-pixel gather offsets.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The changes add TIPC 1121 session handling to the graphics-system server. They also update shader texture lowering, texture-gather offset extraction, and native shader hash versioning, with new tests for several lowering cases.
The server routes TIPC 1121 to a session that validates open and command headers. The session echoes the handshake token and returns two zero words for command 11.

TLD4 lowering supports offset modes 0–2 with mode-specific validation and encoding. Native texture-gather offset extraction uses 8-bit components. The per-pixel gather test checks instruction encoding and order.
Texture sampling paths and FP16 packing src/shader_recompiler/frontend/ampere/lower_to_maxwell.h, src/tests/video_core/ampere_lowering.cpp
The dedicated array depth-comparison sampling path is removed, and FP16 merge operands are reordered. Tests cover half-texture channel masks and array-depth sampling.
Native shader hash version src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp
Native shader analysis uses hash version tag 0x4f554e4345000003. Non-native analysis is unchanged.

Merge Risk: Low · up to eba05
Some per-pixel gathers can use incorrect offsets, and existing caches can add startup work. These bounded risks warrant owner awareness or fixes before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 204f1
The new guest-facing session has narrowly scoped behavior, and no new privilege expansion was established. Existing resource-cleanup weaknesses and incomplete security coverage limit confidence in a minimal-risk assessment.

No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new session exposure is to guest callers already holding nx2:gsv access and to session resources within the emulator. The same service already exposes raw-session creation through other commands; the new route does not establish access to another tenant, host credential or external service.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The guest supplies request words, not the identity of the returned kernel object. The service creates and registers the session, and outgoing translation allocates its guest handle. Successful move translation releases the temporary client reference; the new handlers do not treat the echoed token as an authorization credential.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Session publication has an inherited failure-containment weakness: handle insertion failure returns before releasing the moved client reference, the service framework ignores that error, and context destruction does not release outgoing objects. This can strand registered session state. Equivalent allocation and publication exposure already exists for the same nx2:gsv caller through raw-session commands in the base, so it is not retained as a PR-introduced concern.
observed — The normal lifecycle has cleanup and ordering controls: request completion has exclusive session access, a closed session is retired by the server manager, client destruction notifies the parent session, and final session destruction releases the owner's session-count reservation.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make shared raw-session creation and handle publication transactional: propagate publication errors and release unpublished endpoints and reservations on failure or shutdown. Apply this to the existing common lifecycle rather than treating command 1121 as the origin of the weakness.

Explanation
The title names two real changes in the PR: the Welcome Tour startup fix (nx2:gsv command 1121 returning a raw session with a TIPC handshake) and the native texture rendering fixes (per-pixel TLD4 gather offsets, array-depth sampling via general_tex, and half-float channel order). It is a concise, specific summary that a teammate scanning history can use. It omits the shader cache salt bump and the documentation-only changes, which is expected for a title.

Skip domain header sizing for TIPC replies.
A converted nx2:gsv session can reach command 1121. ResponseBuilder then adds four DomainMessageHeader words to data_size, but TIPC replies do not write that header. OpenSession1121 therefore advertises five data words even though it supplies only the one-word result.
This sizing defect predates the PR, but the new raw-session response still uses the affected path.
Suggested fix
- if (mgr->IsDomain()) {+ if (mgr->IsDomain() && !ctx.IsTipc()) {
raw_data_size += u32(sizeof(DomainMessageHeader) / sizeof(u32) + num_domain_objects);
ctx.write_size += num_domain_objects;
}

Reject per-pixel TLD4 offset pairs that cross shadow_boundary.
For TLD4 mode 2, source_b at or above shadow_boundary is not remapped or rejected. The bit-32 shadow check is skipped for opcode 0xb63, and the mode-2 validation only checks source_b >= 245. The lowering then copies raw source_b and source_b + 1, so the pair can read reserved uniform mirrors. A single pair-range check also covers the case where only source_b + 1 crosses the boundary.

Invalidate serialized pipeline caches with this ABI change.
This line changes the native shader cache key, but src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_pipeline_cache.cpp still accepts cache version 21. LoadDiskResources() can therefore load old serialized native environments and rebuild them under their old keys. Current shaders use the new keys, so those pipelines are not reused. This adds startup work and retains obsolete pipelines in memory. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
