Presentation now queues frames by default without waiting for vertical synchronization. Buffers are released after the selected swap interval and GPU work are complete.
Blocking, vertically paced presentation remains available through a configuration option, with speed limiting enabled in that mode.
Reliability
Presentation requests now report a resource error when a release fence cannot be allocated or the release queue is full.
The present path can return a scheduled release fence. The session allocates and cleans up the release syncpoint and queue. Queued presentation skips blocking vblank pacing and the post-composition speed limiter.
Djihads80/Eglantine#493 — Reports an apparent Mario Kart World frame-rate cap; this change alters presentation pacing that can affect frame-rate decisions.
Djihads80/Eglantine#588 — Reports frame rates and swap-interval behavior; this change alters how presentation releases are paced for requested swap intervals.
Possibly related PRs
Djihads80/Eglantine#503 — Changes Switch 2 frame-ahead waiting and vsync pacing, which overlap with this PR’s presentation pacing changes.
Frames may be corrupted in these cases. The change is mergeable with follow-up on release timing.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 87d9d
The change is contained to local graphics synchronization and bounds pending releases. Cleanup introduces a dependency that may prevent a session from closing when a required service is unavailable. No new privilege escalation or broader data-access capability was established.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Presentation-session teardown now requires successful service discovery. After a queue has been initialized, destruction resets it and performs a fresh blocking nvdrv lookup before closing existing display events. If that registration is absent, the lookup retries without a timeout or shutdown exit. The inspected guest-facing unregister handler can remove a supplied service name without an ownership check. This extends a preexisting video-session cleanup dependency to presentation sessions and can strand their cleanup; ordinary shutdown was not shown to remove the registration.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed state spans presentation sessions and the emulator-wide syncpoint pool. Queue capacity is session-local, but allocation consumes shared IDs, so resource pressure can affect other users of that pool. The inspected change does not establish additional host privileges or access outside graphics synchronization.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A conditional availability path is to initialize presentation, remove the nvdrv registration through the guest-facing unregister command, and close the presentation session. Its new cleanup lookup then cannot resolve while the registration remains absent. An analogous video-session path already existed, so this broadens affected cleanup paths rather than establishing a new privilege boundary bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Guest-supplied valid fence IDs are checked before queue release. Out-of-range IDs represent an absent fence and skip that check. Returned release counters are globally addressable through the existing syncpoint query and event-wait interfaces; the inspected code does not attach a session identity to them.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Ordinary shutdown closes service servers before resetting the service manager. Server cleanup deletes sessions but does not itself unregister service names. Consequently, ordinary shutdown ordering alone does not demonstrate the missing-registration failure described above.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give the allocated release syncpoint a lifetime-safe cleanup owner that does not require blocking service rediscovery during destruction. Separately, define whether shutdown signaling means cancellation or completed buffer consumption before strengthening the release contract around final-consumer completion.

- Around line 1786-1789: Update the queued release path around PresentQueue and
QueueRelease so its release fence remains pending until the GPU fence for the
frame passes, rather than being signaled based only on timing. Preserve the
nonblocking present path required for suspended GPU channels.
- Around line 1855-1858: Update NvdrvSyncpoints::AllocateSyncpoint so pool
exhaustion reports failure without reserving or returning syncpoint ID 0. In
QueueRelease, check the allocation result before calling GetGuestSyncpointValue
or creating the timer, and follow the existing failure-handling path without
creating a release fence for an invalid syncpoint.
- Around line 1701-1708: Update the release cleanup loop in the m_release_timer
block to stop when the syncpoint has reached or advanced beyond m_release_value,
using a wrap-safe signed distance check. Increment only while the target is
still ahead, and preserve the existing unscheduling and syncpoint-freeing
behavior.

- Around line 123-126: In the test using Core::System, explicitly reset
CoreTiming after the assertions and before the system is destroyed, so its timer
thread is joined before kernel teardown. Use the existing
system.CoreTiming().Reset() API; do not rely on Core::System destruction to stop
timing in the correct order.
