Fast GPU accuracy + Balanced/Accurate fence behavior deadlocks a few minutes into Ocarina of Time: every channel parks on a GPU semaphore acquire and nothing ever recovers (the player sees a frozen window; the log shows all channels waiting on semaphores with the buffer cache empty).
The mechanism (measured, not theorized)
The title's semaphores at a stable device block (0xd6d2000–0xd6d2048) are flip counters with a precise structure, measured with a write watch over a full session (107,087 writes):
They advance exclusively via fence-carried payload releases (fence-pop): zero immediate-path writes, zero downloads.
The 19 words form a depth-19 ring — all 19 slots advance in lockstep each round, one round per frame.
Every stuck acquire's target is exactly current + 19 — the value the next round writes, already committed by the game's protocol. Four hangs across four boots, all 19: 0x1a25b@0x1a248, 0x10d05@0x10cf2, 0x2657d@0x2656a, 0xf26b@0xf258.
The deadlock has two faces:
The value is a round behind. When every carrier channel is itself parked behind such an acquire, the fence chain holds no future release — the ring stops mid-round forever (measured: writes silent from t=190.45, channels found 19-behind at t=192.45).
The value is past the target. A strict AcquireEqual on a monotonically bumped counter never returns once the value has blown through it (want 0x48, now 0xac).
The fixes
Passage satisfaction (10 ms grace): when an AcquireEqual's target has been passed, take the greater-or-equal reading the game's protocol implies. Fires constantly during boot — the ring passes targets by whole rounds there — so the grace must be milliseconds; gating it on the 2 s diagnostic warning crawled boot to one round per two seconds.
Ring completion (100 ms): when a wait is stuck and the target is one ring-round ahead, write the committed round value and notify the waiters — exactly what the fence-pop would have delivered. 100 ms sits above legitimate frame pacing and far below the freeze it prevents.
Flush-before-force in the puller's 1 ms rescue: a forced fence release can sit on recorded-but-unsubmitted commands (DeferFlush batching); flushing first bounds the wait by execution alone.
EDEN_NX2_SEM_TRACE=<device block> (default off): logs every write to the block with its source (fence-pop / immediate / download) — the instrument that produced the measurements above.
Results
Two sessions on Fast + Balanced fences, previously a guaranteed freeze in 2–5 minutes: no freezes; the foliage flicker this title shows on that config is gone as well (the flicker and the freeze are the same ring-delivery nondeterminism at different severities — transient stalls flicker, a permanent one freezes). A residual gamma variance remains and is timing-sensitive; full Accurate's strictness still hides it entirely.
…forcing a release
With Fast accuracy + Balanced/Accurate fence behavior, every channel can park
on a GPU semaphore whose payload rides a fence while the fence chain sits on
recorded-but-unsubmitted commands (DeferFlush batching, or a back whose idle
hook already ran): the 1 ms rescue's forced release then waits on a chain that
never executes, and nothing recovers (OoT vistas deadlocked ~60 s in, channels
wanting 0xf259/0xf26b while the counters sat 13-19 behind, buffer cache empty).
When the rescued value still hasn't landed after a release, flush the scheduler
first so the chain is on the GPU and the forced wait is bounded by execution.

These semaphores are monotonically bumped counters, and with the emulator's
looser channel ordering the writers can already be past an AcquireEqual target
when the waiting channel reaches it (2026-11-06 hang: channels wanting 0x48
while the word read 0xac) — the strict-equality wait then never resolves.
Hardware orders the channel against the writers; we cannot. After the wait
outlives the 2 s warning, take the greater-or-equal reading the protocol
implies.

… deadlock hunt
Nx2SemaphoreWaiters gains a device-block watch that logs every flip-counter
write with its source (fence-pop, immediate, or download). Armed from boot by
EDEN_NX2_SEM_TRACE=<hex> or automatically at the puller's stuck-acquire
warning — the flip-counter block sits at a stable device address (0xd6d2000)
across boots, so one Balanced run that freezes shows who stops writing and
when: the fence machinery, the carrier channel, or the download path.

…king
The flip-counter semaphores advance as a depth-19 ring of fence-carried
releases, and every stuck wait's target is exactly current + 19 — the value
the next round writes, already committed by the game. When every carrier
channel parks behind such an acquire, the fence chain holds no future release
and the ring stops mid-round forever (measured: writes silent from t=190.45,
channels 19 behind at t=192.45; earlier hangs identical). After the 2 s
warning, write the target round ourselves and notify the waiters.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Gating both rescues on the warning flag turned boot into one ring round per
two seconds (the value passes the target immediately but the channel parks
until the diagnostic threshold). Passage satisfaction now needs 10 ms of
grace and ring completion 100 ms — above legitimate frame pacing, 20-200x
faster than the freeze it prevents. The 2 s warning stays diagnostic.

The puller adds timed recovery paths for stalled semaphore acquires. The semaphore waiter adds watched-block registration and write logging. The buffer cache logs and skips downloads that overlap the watched block.

Summary
Watch registration and write tracing src/video_core/nx2.h, src/video_core/query_cache/query_cache.h, src/video_core/buffer_cache/buffer_cache.h, src/video_core/engines/puller.cpp
The semaphore waiter stores and arms a watched block, including from EDEN_NX2_SEM_TRACE. Labeled writes within the watch window are logged. The buffer cache logs and skips downloads that overlap the watched block. The puller arms watches during semaphore processing and acquire warnings.
For a delayed-fence acquire, the puller flushes commands before releasing fences. AcquireEqual resumes after 10 ms if the current value exceeds its target. After 100 ms, the puller can write a nearby target to CPU memory and notify waiters.

The change targets Ocarina of Time deadlocks. However, a debug watch that can arm itself may discard parts of GPU downloads. The timed recovery paths may also release semaphore waits early in other titles. Resolve both before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to df31a
The recovery can mark unfinished work complete, while diagnostic tracing can suppress valid data updates beyond the watched word. These changes create data-integrity and failure-containment risks within an emulated workload. Host privilege escalation is not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: Recovery generalizes a measured ring protocol to pending Nx2 equality waits without proving that protocol applies. After 10 ms, a passed value is accepted; after 100 ms, any mapped target ahead by at most 0x40 can be written by the waiting channel. Neither path requires the expected producer to have completed or even queued the release. This weakens producer-owned synchronization and can allow dependent commands to consume unfinished state, compromising cross-channel failure containment.
Medium · reliability · observed: A mapped acquire stalled for two seconds can arm a singleton watch without host opt-in. When a later download overlaps both the watched region and pending CPU-written data, writeback returns before preserving the remaining GPU-produced bytes. The asynchronous caller still clears dirty tracking and retires the download. Consequently, diagnostic state can discard valid updates throughout an overlapping extent, not merely protect CPU-written semaphore bytes, and successful acquire cleanup does not clear that state.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure concerns mapped emulated memory and channels using it. Rescue modifies one mapped word and can satisfy other waiters at that address. Watch effects are singleton-scoped, but suppression requires an overlapping download and CPU-write overlap; the dropped extent can exceed the watched region. The inspected paths do not establish host privilege gain or cross-tenant compromise.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A guest able to submit Nx2 semaphore commands can choose an unmatched mapped wait that survives two seconds, including a mask wait not handled by equality rescue. This arms the watch without an environment setting. Subsequent qualifying CPU writes and overlapping GPU downloads reach the writeback-suppression path. This supports a workload-integrity concern, not a verified host-escape vulnerability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new recovery gives the waiting consumer authority to produce its own completion value. The waiter mutex protects notification state, not the preceding memory write. GPU split draining orders previously submitted work, but the inspected recovery has no producer token, generation check, or atomic compare-and-write.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Discarding a watched download while clearing its GPU-modified tracking removes the normal indication that those bytes still require synchronization. This can turn a temporary stall or diagnostic condition into persistent stale guest-visible state.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Constrain exceptional completion to an explicitly identified protocol with producer and generation evidence. Keep tracing observational; if writeback protection is necessary, preserve unaffected subranges and retain dirty tracking for unwritten bytes. Scope any protective state to its owning allocation or session with explicit cleanup.

Complete the download before logging the watch.
When a download intersects both a CPU-written range and the watched block, WriteDownloadedMemory returns without writing any part of the download. PopAsyncBuffers can then mark the skipped GPU data clean. The watch can also arm automatically after a two-second acquire wait.
Write the parts outside cpu_written before logging. Preserve the CPU-written parts.

Restrict passed-target acceptance to a safe semaphore domain.
For example, if an AcquireEqual waits for 0 while the word remains 1, this branch releases the wait after 10 ms without a matching write. The channel can then process commands before the CPU or another channel releases the semaphore.
Restrict the fallback to cases where a greater value establishes that the target has passed, while preserving the counter-ring recovery.

A slow CPU or channel release can take more than 100 ms. This branch can then write the target and resume the channel before its commands are ready. It can also latch other waiters on the same address.
Limit the rescue to a confirmed stalled ring. Checking for a delta of 19 alone would still match unrelated semaphores.

…top reporting (Eglantine-Community#710) (Eglantine-Community#712)
* input_common: compare motion mapping input with its first value
Mapping a motion input ("Shake!") registers a device only when two consecutive
reports differ by more than 1.5 g or 0.6 rotations/s. SDL3 delivers every
sensor sample, so a controller reporting every 4 ms (the Steam Controller at
~250 Hz) never changes that much between two reports and could not be mapped
through the UI.
Compare each report with the first one received since mapping began instead,
so a quick turn or shake crosses the thresholds at any report rate. The
baselines are cleared when mapping begins and ends.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
* input_common/sdl: restart motion sensors that stop reporting
The SDL driver restarts a sensor only when its reports are all zero. A Steam
Controller (2026, SDL's Triton driver) through its wireless dongle stops
sending sensor reports altogether after it reconnects or when Steam Input,
running at the same time, changes its IMU mode; SDL turns the IMU on only
once, so motion stayed dead until the emulator restarted, and the motion
mapping dialog had nothing to detect either.
Track when each controller last reported a sensor sample and, from
PumpEvents (every 250 ms), restart the sensors of a connected controller with
motion that has been silent for a second, backing off to 8 s while it stays
silent.
