Mario Kart World: full-speed cup intro movies (skip present pacing during large movies), on top of #553 - #729
Platform: developed and tested entirely on Linux, on a Batocera Linux device (x86_64, AMD Radeon 890M, Vulkan via Mesa RADV). It has not been tested on Windows or macOS.
Makes Mario Kart World's cup intro movies (the flyover before every Grand Prix and Knockout Tour) play at full speed with clean sound. Adds an opt-in switch, EDEN_MKW_MOVIE_UNPACED=1, that skips present pacing while a large movie is playing. Off by default; nothing changes without it.
This branch is stacked on #553 (snowstormxd's water fix), because that is the build it was tested on. The new commit only touches src/core/hle/service/nx2_gsv.h and does not depend on #553's changes.
Problems this fixes (tested together)
1. Kart sinks below the water surface (#553, confirmed). Without #553: the first water section after loading is fine, later ones sink (sometimes after a few seconds), and one pause fixes the rest of the course. With #553 and EDEN_MKW_WATER_FEEDBACK=1, the kart floats on every water section. None of these runtime settings helped on their own: EDEN_NX2_READ_TRAPS=0, EDEN_NX2_BUFFER_DOWNLOADS=1, EDEN_NX2_SPLIT=0, EDEN_NX2_GPU_ONLY_LAZY=0, GPU fence behavior Accurate, settings matched to build 99.
2. Cup intro movies run slow with stuttering sound (this PR). The intro is a 2560x1440, 60 fps VP9 movie (1,452 frames, about 24 s). Build 99 plays it in 24.9 s. Build 177 + #553 took about 34 s, and about 67 s with the game locked to its 30 FPS mode. The sound came in bursts.
Cause
PaceToVblank sleeps the presenting thread until the next vblank. During the intro this starves the game's movie player. With EDEN_NX2_VDEC_TRACE=1, the game submitted almost the whole movie (1,439 of 1,452 packets) in the first 5 s, but asked for a decoded frame (213 output info) only about 34 times a second, even while presenting at a steady 60 fps. Turning the speed limit off, which returns from PaceToVblank before pacing, made the intro play at full speed with correct sound. But it also made menus run too fast, so pacing is still needed elsewhere.
The change
The video decoder thread stamps the time of every output frame of a stream at least 1920 pixels wide (m_width >= 1920).
With EDEN_MKW_MOVIE_UNPACED=1, PaceToVblank skips its wait while such a frame came out within the last 250 ms, and resets m_next_vblank so pacing resumes cleanly afterwards.
Small clips (the 640x360 menu video), menus and races keep normal pacing, including the game's 30 FPS mode.

Ruled out along the way: decode speed (the nx2:vdec thread used about 4% CPU), NVDEC emulation GPU (no hardware decoder was tried for this service), FFmpeg frame threading, the per-frame InvalidateRegion from 3ffa971337 (never runs for this game's movie), the WaitForRelease fence wait (never runs), and the audsmx/auddmg streams (the game opens none).

Notes for anyone with the same problems (not part of this PR)
Building on Ubuntu 24.04 / WSL: the system fmt (9) and xbyak are too old: format_string has no member named get and Xmm has no member named cvt256. Configure with -DCMAKE_DISABLE_FIND_PACKAGE_fmt=TRUE -DCMAKE_DISABLE_FIND_PACKAGE_xbyak=TRUE so the bundled versions are used. Patching cvt256() instead compiled, but crashed at runtime with Xbyak::Error: bad align.
NUP instead of extracted files: the extracted game (about 205,000 files) kept about 3,600 file descriptors open. The .nup uses 76.
AMD 890M:EDEN_NX2_NO_MESH=1 and EDEN_NX2_SPARSE_UNBACKED=1 were needed for stability. Fast GPU accuracy, reactive flushing off and asynchronous shaders on were also faster here.
Start any Grand Prix. The log shows nx2:vdecsvc frame 1 (2560x1440 ... and frame 1452 (...end of stream) about 24 s apart (about 34 s without the switch).
Check that menus and races run at normal speed.

PaceToVblank sleeps the presenting thread until the next vblank. While Mario Kart
World plays its 2560x1440 VP9 cup intro movies, that sleep starves the game's movie
player: it asked the decoder for ~34 frames per second, so the 24 s intro took ~34 s
(~67 s with the game's 30 FPS mode) and its sound stuttered. Build 99, which has no
present pacing, plays it in 24.9 s.
With EDEN_MKW_MOVIE_UNPACED=1, the video decoder stamps the time of each output frame
of a stream at least 1920 pixels wide, and PaceToVblank skips its wait while such a
frame came out within the last 250 ms. Small clips, menus and gameplay keep normal
pacing. Off by default.

The PR adds opt-in Mario Kart World movie pacing behavior, a shader zero-depth fallback, and a compute collision-image publication path.
Changes: Movie frame pacing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Track movie frames and adjust pacing src/core/hle/service/nx2_gsv.h
The decoder records a shared timestamp when configured width is at least 1920. When EDEN_MKW_MOVIE_UNPACED begins with 1 and that timestamp is less than 250 ms old, PaceToVblank returns without pacing.
Rendering workarounds
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Apply and identify the shader fallback src/video_core/mkw_wave_workaround.h, src/video_core/shader_environment.*, src/video_core/renderer_vulkan/vk_pipeline_cache.cpp
When enabled, the shader environment applies the zero-depth fallback and records the native program key. The pipeline cache uses a separate directory for this setting.
The compute pipeline lookup returns the native key. For a matching key and valid dispatch data, the rasterizer requests publication of the selected image. The texture cache validates the image, downloads and swizzles it to guest memory, and clears its GpuModified flag.
Djihads80/Eglantine#278: The issue reports Mario Kart World stutter and audio crackle linked to PaceToVblank; this PR changes pacing during large movie frames.
Possibly related PRs
Djihads80/Eglantine#737: Ports the movie-pacing and water fixes from this PR and changes how they are enabled.
Some opt-in movies may remain paced, and fresh fallback-enabled titles may not save pipelines. These bounded issues warrant owner awareness before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 447c9
The compatibility paths are opt-in and narrowly guarded. No newly introduced security vulnerability was established, but invalid-memory and concurrent-remapping behavior remain incompletely verified, so the risk is not minimal.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is within an emulator process: guest dispatch data influences image selection and guest-memory publication, while decoder activity influences host presentation timing. Activation requires host environment settings. The inspected paths do not establish additional tenant, service, credential, or network authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — An invalid or cross-page CB0 source remains an unresolved safety case, not a verified PR-introduced attack path. The new helper checks declared size but uses a read that translates only the starting address. However, the unchanged base Configure path already performs guest-addressed handle reads through the same primitive. The investigation did not establish increased attacker authority or verify that the matched shader reaches this new read without equivalent prior descriptor reads.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new guest-to-host processing path runs only after pipeline configuration succeeds and while texture and buffer cache locks are held. It combines an operator-controlled gate with dispatch checks and destination-layout and mapping checks. These are concrete controls, but the destination checks do not validate the separate CB0 source read.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Publication validation failures return before readback or flag mutation. Successful publication waits before writing guest memory and clears GpuModified afterward. The linear write is row-wise and has no success result, so all-or-nothing publication and recovery under concurrent remapping were not established. GPU-wait exceptions propagate rather than providing a publication rollback path.
observed — The movie clock retains no guest buffer or fence ownership. Repeated producer events replace the timestamp, and its pacing effect expires within 250 ms without requiring teardown cleanup. This bounds stale cross-session timing influence, although the process-wide hint is not session-specific.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a page-aware read for the four-byte output handle, and make the mapping-stability requirement across validation, GPU waiting, and guest publication explicit. These would strengthen the boundary contract; they are not evidence of a newly verified vulnerability.

Port the fingerprinted wave and collision-map fixes from #553 and adapt #729 movie pacing without opt-in switches. Limit movie activity to MKW and the current graphics session, track completed frame outputs independently of release fences, and retain current experimental decoding and shader diagnostics.

Share the EDEN_MKW_ZERO_DEPTH_FALLBACK check with the shader lowering code.
The same getenv plus enabled[0] == '1' test now exists here and in src/video_core/shader_environment.cpp at Lines 528-529. The cache directory selection must match whether the shader is modified. If one test changes alone, modified shaders can be written to the default cache, or the reverse.
Add one helper, for example VideoCommon::MkwZeroDepthFallbackEnabled() in mkw_wave_workaround.h. Call it from both places.

Timestamp frames from newly registered images.
The update is inside the m_release_fences branch. RegisterBuffer supplies images without release fences, so the first frames do not activate the workaround. If a clip fits entirely in the initial image ring, it remains paced throughout. Move the update outside that branch, after the frame is written. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Create the title directory before the fallback subdirectory.
If the title directory does not exist, CreateDir(base_dir) fails. On a fresh pipeline cache, the filename remains empty, so pipelines are not saved. This continues on later launches until the title directory is created.

Why not have EDEN_MKW_MOVIE_UNPACED=1 on by default ?
when having it on by default it didn't solve the issue so i had to increase play speed by x2 to get the audio sync to work. But doing this applied to the menu screens as well. characters in the selection and other animations moved at x2 speed. so needing it to run only when it was at the cut scenes was the goal at that point. it only activates when the cut scenes are rendered at a 1920 resolution which is less than native for it. so it triggers when anything at 1920 or higher plays. this is particularly for a Batocera build on budget equipment.
