Align EventViewerX release targets and first-run guidance - #157
I aligned the published library packages and the PowerShell module with the supported runtimes. The five NuGet libraries ship net472, net8.0 and net10.0. The module ZIP ships net472 and net8.0, with development and packaged imports selecting the same assembly family. Package checks cover the exact library targets and both Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 imports.
Mail delivery for evx report and evx watch now uses Mailozaurr 3.0.5 profiles, its protected secret store and its routed provider send service. Graph, SMTP, Gmail, SendGrid, Mailgun and SES use the same profile ID and recipient options. I removed the unreleased EventViewerX SMTP JSON format. --mail-dry-run renders and resolves the selected profile without calling a provider, and watch does not acknowledge a batch or advance its checkpoint on a dry run. Report and watch outputs cannot overwrite the effective Mailozaurr profile or secret store, including the implicit default paths, linked directories and hard-link aliases. Pending watch batches retain their original profile and recipients; a changed destination holds the batch without sending or advancing its checkpoint. Show-EVXEvent -EmailPackage remains a transport-neutral rendering path; the guide shows how to send that package with Mailozaurr. No real mail was sent in validation.
The CLI lock graphs resolve System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs 10.0.14 with NuGetAudit enabled. I fixed the SDK-generated lock mismatch by selecting the already declared SDK 10.0.112 exactly in global.json; the strict Release build is a CI gate. Each CLI runtime and archive style now has its own publish directory, so a later style cannot clear an earlier style's checksum inputs. The benchmark entrypoints now build the supported net8.0 module instead of a removed net10.0-windows module target.
Docs/First-Run.md covers local, direct remote, collector and offline reports, a scheduled report, and Graph certificate and SMTP relay notification recipes. Docs/PowerShell-Guide.md shows the email package route.
API and migration
I kept the three released command aliases: Find-WinEvent -> Get-EVXEvent, Get-EVXFilter -> New-EVXFilter, and Write-EVXEntry -> Write-EVXEvent. I recommend marking them as legacy in the next major version, measuring use and giving users a migration window before deciding whether to remove them. I did not add aliases or command wrappers in W1.
I started the EventViewerX.Reports.* caller inventory in Docs/Legacy-Reports-Inventory.md. Its public facades remain in W1; consumer migration belongs in W2 or the reporting redesign.
Validation and follow-up
The strict Release solution build passes with NuGetAudit enabled and zero warnings. The .NET suite passes 3,408 tests with 3 skipped. The focused CLI Pester suite passes 63 tests, including profile and secret store collisions, linked-directory and hard-link collisions, query-summary and diagnostic input preservation, and pending-batch destination and recipient-casing changes. Graph and SMTP use fake send handlers in the tests; dry runs invoke neither. All 12 CLI archives build. With the isolated publish directories, the Windows x64 archive build and both packaged Graph/SMTP dry runs pass. A clean Linux x64 native publish generates its checksum catalog, and both archive styles pass separate native smoke checks and packaged Graph/SMTP dry runs. Matching CI runners qualify the other architectures.
The local PowerShell suite reaches six Event Log permission failures on an unprivileged host (classic source registration and Security log access); the other tests pass. CI's PowerShell jobs are required to be green before merge.
The first-run and migration paths provide follow-up for #84, #79, #42 and #86. These issues stay open until the released package and reporters' remaining questions can be checked. This PR prepares source and unsigned validation artifacts. The signed release follows through the normal key session after merge.

Summary
Mail profile delivery and CLI integration Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/EventNotificationMailDelivery.cs, Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/Program*, Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/SmtpNotificationProfile.cs, Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/Program.Evidence.cs
Report and watch use a delivery class that validates profiles and recipients, then sends through Mailozaurr. Watch checks profile and recipient values before resuming a pending batch. Output-path checks include profile and secret stores.
Schema 2 manifests record the transport profile and trimmed recipients. Undelivered Schema 1 batches that require external transport but lack acknowledgement fail closed.
Mail delivery tests and usage examples Sources/EventViewerX.Tests/*, Tests/Cli.Tests.ps1, Tests/Fixtures/*, Docs/First-Run.md, Docs/PowerShell-Guide.md, README.md
Tests cover profile routing, dry runs, unsuccessful or queued sends, store-output collisions, and pending-batch mismatches. Documentation and fixtures show profile-based delivery.

The new cases verify only successful dry-run output. They do not verify that Auto and 1 produce the intended SmtpSecurityMode in SmtpSessionRequest. Expose the normalized/request mode through a dry-run test seam or diagnostic field, then assert it for both inputs. Mailozaurr.Internet 3.0.5 exposes SmtpSessionRequest.SecurityMode and connection-result security-mode properties for this observation. This adds compatibility coverage without claiming that current profiles use an incorrect live mode.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The removed netstandard publish target explicitly gathered Windows managed and SQLite native runtime files and rejected empty asset groups. The replacement net8.0 module path has no shown equivalent that guarantees the three SQLite architectures required by Build/Test-ModulePackage.ps1.
Package validation fails for missing Lib/Core/runtimes/win-*/native/e_sqlite3.dll; without that validation, storage on an affected PowerShell 7 architecture fails during module import or native preload.
This can occur when: A net8.0 publish or module build copies only the current RID's SQLite native file, or does not copy runtime-native files from transitive packages into the module ZIP.

The collision check protects an explicitly named --mail-profile-store but may not protect the default Mailozaurr profile store used when that option is omitted.
Rendering could overwrite the profile store after validation, damaging subsequent notification configuration.
This can occur when: A report output is directed to the active default profiles.json path while mail delivery uses its implicit store.

Update the input-path collection around ComparisonPath so collision validation

preserve the explicit-option behavior.
Add a live-send CLI test that does not use --mail-dry-run.
The two new profile cases return at the dry-run branch in EventNotificationMailDelivery.SendAsync, before _send.SendAsync is called. Those cases do not detect a broken send wiring in EventNotificationMailDelivery.Create. Add a non-dry-run case that verifies the MailApplicationBuilder send path, or a test that checks the registered send handlers. Use a local SMTP or Graph test double, not a live provider.
Coverage details
The CLI tests exercise profile resolution through application.ProfileStore. They do not exercise application.Send. The unit tests use RoutedMailSendService with fake handlers, so they do not verify the handlers that MailApplicationBuilder registers.

MailApplicationBuilder send path; assert that the send is reached without
contacting a live provider.
Add tests for failed and queued mail-send results.
EventNotificationMailDelivery.SendAsync throws InvalidOperationException when the handler returns a failed or queued result. The test file has no test for that path. Its only fake handler always returns Succeeded = true, so a regression that stops this check would not fail any test. Add a fake handler configuration for failed and queued results, then assert that SendAsync throws InvalidOperationException.

This test covers the helper contract only. It does not verify that watch skips acknowledgement. The watch gates at Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/Program.Watch.cs:215 and :407 check the returned flags, and the helper throws before returning them. Testing the watch path needs a separate integration test.

Reject report and watcher output paths that would overwrite active Mailozaurr profile or secret stores, and cover unacknowledged sends.
The watch collision test at Tests/Cli.Tests.ps1:223-246 passes only the profile store as --jsonl. The secret store appears only in the report test at lines 248-270. Watch checks --jsonl against both store paths. A change that removes the secret store path from only the watch check would pass the current watch tests. A watch test that uses the secret store closes this gap. The new test follows the existing profile test and uses the same store environment variable as the report secret test.

Sources/EventViewerX.Reporting/EventNotificationOutbox.cs:88-92 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject external-transport batches that lack a profile or recipients.
Save accepts requiresExternalTransport: true with a null transportProfileId and an empty recipients sequence. It writes these values into a schema 2 manifest. Docs/Security.md states that schema 2 binds pending mail batches to their profile and recipients, so this batch violates that contract. When the watcher resumes it with a configured mail profile, the profile and recipient mismatch check throws. That throw runs before the per-batch failure handling, so the batch stays pending and the current resume pass stops before later batches.
Reject the combination in Save:
🐛 Suggested fix
string[] recipientSnapshot = recipients.Select(static recipient => recipient?.Trim() ?? string.Empty).ToArray();
if (recipientSnapshot.Any(string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace)) {
throw new ArgumentException("Notification recipients cannot be empty.", nameof(recipients));
}
+ if (requiresExternalTransport &&+ (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(transportProfileId) || recipientSnapshot.Length == 0)) {+ throw new ArgumentException(+ "External transport batches require a transport profile and at least one recipient.",+ nameof(requiresExternalTransport));+ }
The two fail-closed tests, UnacknowledgedSchemaOneMailBatchFailsClosed and MissingManifestSchemaFailsClosedWithoutAcknowledgingLegacyBatch, build their external batches through the overload without a profile. Update them to pass a profile and recipients. Transport-neutral batches should keep requiresExternalTransport: false.

Make the schema-1 fixture match a real legacy manifest.
This test saves through the current Save overload and only lowers SchemaVersion, so the manifest still contains Recipients. A schema-1 manifest from the base build has neither TransportProfileId nor Recipients. The test therefore does not read a manifest without those properties. A future reader that requires them for schema 1 would still pass. The current reader does not require them, so this is a coverage gap, not a present failure.

Add a dry-run case for a matching pending batch, and count dry-run sends.
The two pending-batch cases only assert rejection. A watcher that rejected every pending external batch with the same message would still pass them. Their absence assertions can also pass when the watcher stops early. Neither check shows that a matching batch reaches the dry-run send.
No existing output shows that send. ResumedBatches increments only after a real send, so it stays at zero during a dry run. Add a DryRunBatches counter to the dry-run branch and to the summary file. The new case can then assert that the matching batch reached that branch and remains unacknowledged.

the watcher’s pending-batch processing and include it in the summary file;
increment it when a matching batch reaches that branch without treating it as a

pending-batch case and assert the dry-run count is one, the resumed count is
zero, no mismatch is reported, and no delivery acknowledgment is created.

Compare absent output names case-sensitively on case-sensitive Windows directories.
On Windows, ValidateReportOutputPaths checks report outputs in a HashSet<string> that uses StringComparer.OrdinalIgnoreCase. For an output that does not exist yet, ComparisonPath returns the case-preserving full path. Two absent outputs whose names differ only by case, such as A and a in one directory, produce keys that compare equal. The second Add call then throws "Report outputs and sidecars must be separate from every input, key, history file and other output." Windows can store both files when the directory has per-directory case sensitivity enabled, so the validation rejects two valid, distinct outputs.
Use a key comparison that follows the target directory's case-sensitivity setting. Check this setting before you choose the comparer. Do not apply a case-insensitive comparison to absent paths in a case-sensitive directory.

Review comment at @Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/Program.Paths.cs at line 35:
Update ComparisonPath and the output-key comparison used by
ValidateReportOutputPaths to honor the target directory’s case-sensitivity
setting: check that setting before choosing the comparer, and compare absent
paths case-sensitively in case-sensitive directories so distinct names such as A
and a remain separate.
Add a test for the missing-path branch of the output collision check.
ValidateQuerySummaryPath rejects a --summary-file that matches --write-store or another input path. The added hard-link test uses an existing input, so it reaches only the file-identity branch of ComparisonPath (Sources/EventViewerX.Cli/Program.Paths.cs:23-28). The missing-path branch (Program.Paths.cs:35) has no test. A regression there would not fail the suite.
Add a case where --write-store names a file that does not exist and --summary-file names the same path. Expect exit code 1 and the message --summary-file must be separate from query input and history files. The case needs no platform gate, because both values use the same spelling and match on every platform.

Review comment at @Tests/Cli.Tests.ps1 around lines 344 - 349:
Add a test for the missing-path branch of ValidateQuerySummaryPath where
--write-store and --summary-file use the same nonexistent path; assert exit code
1 and the expected separation error message, without a platform gate.
Add a checkpoint-preservation case to the pending-batch mismatch test.
The test at Tests/Cli.Tests.ps1:363-400 uses a manifest with Checkpoints = @() and configures no checkpoint store. Its assertions cover only the exit code, the error text, and the absence of delivery.json. A change that advances a checkpoint before it rejects a changed recipient or profile would leave these assertions unchanged, so the test would still pass.
Add a case that configures a checkpoint store and a non-empty Checkpoints list in the manifest. Assert that the checkpoint state is unchanged after the mismatch rejection.

What changed
I aligned the published library packages and the PowerShell module with the supported runtimes. The five NuGet libraries ship net472, net8.0 and net10.0. The module ZIP ships net472 and net8.0, with development and packaged imports selecting the same assembly family. Package checks cover the exact library targets and both Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 imports.
Mail delivery for
evx reportandevx watchnow uses Mailozaurr 3.0.5 profiles, its protected secret store and its routed provider send service. Graph, SMTP, Gmail, SendGrid, Mailgun and SES use the same profile ID and recipient options. I removed the unreleased EventViewerX SMTP JSON format.--mail-dry-runrenders and resolves the selected profile without calling a provider, and watch does not acknowledge a batch or advance its checkpoint on a dry run. Report and watch outputs cannot overwrite the effective Mailozaurr profile or secret store, including the implicit default paths, linked directories and hard-link aliases. Pending watch batches retain their original profile and recipients; a changed destination holds the batch without sending or advancing its checkpoint.Show-EVXEvent -EmailPackageremains a transport-neutral rendering path; the guide shows how to send that package with Mailozaurr. No real mail was sent in validation.The CLI lock graphs resolve
System.Security.Cryptography.Pkcs10.0.14 with NuGetAudit enabled. I fixed the SDK-generated lock mismatch by selecting the already declared SDK 10.0.112 exactly inglobal.json; the strict Release build is a CI gate. Each CLI runtime and archive style now has its own publish directory, so a later style cannot clear an earlier style's checksum inputs. The benchmark entrypoints now build the supported net8.0 module instead of a removed net10.0-windows module target.Docs/First-Run.mdcovers local, direct remote, collector and offline reports, a scheduled report, and Graph certificate and SMTP relay notification recipes.Docs/PowerShell-Guide.mdshows the email package route.API and migration
I kept the three released command aliases:
Find-WinEvent->Get-EVXEvent,Get-EVXFilter->New-EVXFilter, andWrite-EVXEntry->Write-EVXEvent. I recommend marking them as legacy in the next major version, measuring use and giving users a migration window before deciding whether to remove them. I did not add aliases or command wrappers in W1.I started the
EventViewerX.Reports.*caller inventory inDocs/Legacy-Reports-Inventory.md. Its public facades remain in W1; consumer migration belongs in W2 or the reporting redesign.Validation and follow-up
The strict Release solution build passes with NuGetAudit enabled and zero warnings.
