docs: warn operators about the traps that stop Mysterium and proxied copies from earning - #672
Operators running 2.0.x hit traps the docs never warned about. A Mysterium node moved onto the fenced bridge fails to start because one port in its UDP range is held by some other program. A proxied copy passes Test and earns nothing because the proxy refuses the earner's servers. And nothing explained how to choose what runs on a small box.
This adds the guidance:
A new page, Moving your Mysterium node behind the fence: back up, check the isolation mode (with the refusal messages and what each one asks), redeploy, then check the identity, Check isolation, probes from inside the node, and the node's own "All ports ... are reachable" log line. It also covers choosing a UDP range below the ephemeral range, checking it with ss, one range per host behind a shared IP, what each port costs in docker-proxy memory, and the order for changing the range on a live node.
In proxied copies: how to probe an earner's host and port, both against the proxy directly and through the copy's tunnel; ProxyRack's late device acceptance and the retry schedule; and a second site as a Tailscale exit node instead of a worker.
In the fleet docs: budgeting a small box with docker stats.
The FAQ no longer says Mysterium sits outside the fence.
One finding: through the tunnel, nc -z reports a port open even when the proxy refused it, and even for an address where nothing exists. I reproduced that with the 2.0.7 tunnel image against a proxy that allows only port 443. The page warns about it and uses checks that need a reply from the far server.
Strict docs build and site-check pass locally. A broken anchor turned the build red as expected.

Walkthrough
This PR adds documentation for moving Mysterium nodes behind the network fence, managing UDP port ranges, testing proxy connectivity, using remote exit nodes, and measuring resource use on small hosts.
Changes: Operational documentation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Mysterium fence migration and UDP operations docs/mysterium-fence.md, docs/guides/mysterium.md, docs/faq.md, zensical.toml
The new guide describes version-specific isolation, migration prerequisites and redeployment, identity and reachability checks, troubleshooting, and UDP range selection and changes. The Mysterium guide and FAQ add related port and version guidance. The Security navigation links to the guide.
Proxy reachability and deployment docs/proxies.md
The docs add proxy connectivity checks, describe delayed provider acceptance and retry timing, and explain how a second-site machine can act as a Tailscale exit node for proxied copies.
Resource planning and FAQs docs/fleet.md, docs/faq.md
The FAQ identifies resource-heavy services and links to measurement guidance. Fleet guidance adds resource estimates, measurement commands, and workload placement recommendations.
GeiserX/CashPilot#665: Adds the fenced Mysterium network behavior described in this PR’s migration documentation.
GeiserX/CashPilot#670: Adds the Fleet redeploy workflow for moving legacy Mysterium nodes behind the fence.
GeiserX/CashPilot#675: Changes the default Mysterium UDP range and documents the same port-range considerations covered here.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 0be1e
Correct the security and exit-node setup instructions before merging: operators could expose proxy credentials, assume custom networks are protected, or move services onto a nonfunctional exit path. Several smaller corrections would also prevent misleading troubleshooting and capacity estimates.

Review comments at @docs/fleet.md:
- Line 210: Update the Mysterium UDP proxy-overhead statement in the fleet
comparison and the linked per-port estimates to clarify that per-port
docker-proxy processes apply only when Docker’s userland proxy is enabled; avoid
implying this overhead occurs with that proxy disabled.
- Around line 216-217: Clarify the Dashboard coverage description in “Measure on
the box”: state that it shows CPU and memory for the services it reports, and
that earners started outside CashPilot may not appear when using the default
socket proxy. Preserve the existing refresh cadence and transition to the
snapshot instructions.
Review comments at @docs/mysterium-fence.md:
- Line 220: Update the `ss` output guidance in the documented port-range check
to clarify that a header alone does not indicate a busy port; state that the
range is free when no socket rows appear below the header, and preserve the
existing explanation of what happens once the node runs.
- Around line 173-174: Update the recovery guidance around the worker and fence
in this passage to distinguish incomplete-fence recovery from container-shape
mismatches: explain that the worker may restore an incomplete fence and start
the node on a later check, while an unapproved image or capability requires
redeploying the node from the dashboard.
- Around line 142-143: Update the broker connectivity check in the
`cashpilot-mysterium` Docker command to label success as TCP reachability only,
not broker health; direct operators to check the node’s broker-session status or
logs separately.
- Around line 4-6: Qualify the introduction, related bullet points, and FAQ in
the fence documentation to state that when CASHPILOT_CONTAINER_NETWORK is set,
CashPilot does not install or verify LAN firewall rules. Direct operators using
custom networks to configure and test their own rules, while preserving the
existing claims for supported network setups.
- Around line 257-259: Update the `docker-proxy` RSS measurement command so its
output clearly identifies the total as host-wide; do not present it as
Mysterium-specific when it includes proxy processes from other containers.
- Around line 268-269: Update the range-change instructions around UDP_PORTS to
document a separate, supported procedure for resetting a custom range to the
default while preserving the data volume. Establish the correct reset mechanism
and explain how to apply it; do not present entering 56000:56029 and redeploying
as sufficient to reset a custom range.
- Around line 213-214: Update the sysctl setup guidance to check all host
configuration locations for later settings that could override the reserved-port
list, resolve any conflicts, and verify the complete list remains effective
after reboot.
Review comments at @docs/proxies.md:
- Around line 205-207: Update both proxy examples to keep credentials out of
shell history and process arguments: use a restricted curl config file for
authentication, created without entering credentials in a shell command, and
reference that file from the curl commands. Preserve the HTTP and SOCKS5 proxy
examples and their existing connection settings.
- Around line 205-207: Update the proxy examples in the documentation to explain
that usernames and passwords must be percent-encoded before being inserted into
proxy URLs, especially when credentials contain reserved characters such as `/`;
preserve shell quoting around the URLs.
- Line 260: Update the retry-window documentation near the redeploy statement to
clarify that redeploying while registration is pending preserves the existing
window, so retries may stop less than 24 hours later. State that a new 24-hour
window begins only after CashPilot has given up and the provider requests
another retry.
- Around line 224-226: Disable curl’s environment-configured proxy use in both
the direct and tunnel probes, so each probe tests its intended network path
without an additional proxy. Update the two curl invocations in the proxy probe
section while preserving their existing options and behavior.
- Line 229: Update the log-inspection guidance around the docker logs command to
capture the log window associated with the current probe and distinguish its
refusal by matching the probe’s timing and target host, rather than treating any
refusal on the same port as its result.
- Around line 417-419: Update the Tailscale exit-node instructions to link to
Tailscale’s Linux setup guidance for enabling IP forwarding before directing
operators to move services to the second-site Linux exit node.
- Around line 210-212: Update the CONNECT troubleshooting guidance to
distinguish proxy refusals from TLS resets after a successful CONNECT. Explain
that a post-CONNECT TLS reset may originate at the destination, and direct
operators to check the destination and protocol; retain the existing refusal
indicators for failed CONNECT attempts.

Qualify the proxy overhead by Docker configuration.
With Docker’s userland proxy disabled, the IPv4 UDP mappings do not start per-port docker-proxy processes. The current guidance can therefore overstate the memory cost and discourage placement on a suitable host. Qualify this statement and the linked per-port estimates.

Disable curl's proxy settings in both probes.
If Docker injects a reachable HTTPS_PROXY, the tunnel probe can reach the earner through that additional proxy even when the copy's proxy refuses the earner directly. This can produce a false success.

Disable curl’s environment-configured proxy use in both the direct and tunnel
probes, so each probe tests its intended network path without an additional
proxy. Update the two curl invocations in the proxy probe section while
preserving their existing options and behavior.

An earlier refusal for another host on the same port can appear in this output. The operator can mistake it for the current probe’s result and blame the proxy. Capture the probe’s log window and explain how to distinguish its refusal from concurrent earner traffic.

Update the log-inspection guidance around the docker logs command to capture the
log window associated with the current probe and distinguish its refusal by
matching the probe’s timing and target host, rather than treating any refusal on
the same port as its result.

If registration is still pending, redeploy keeps the existing window, so retries can stop sooner than 24 hours after redeploy. A new window starts when CashPilot has already given up and the provider again requests a retry.

Update the retry-window documentation near the redeploy statement to clarify
that redeploying while registration is pending preserves the existing window, so
retries may stop less than 24 hours later. State that a new 24-hour window
begins only after CashPilot has given up and the provider requests another
retry.

If IP forwarding is disabled on the second-site Linux machine, the referenced steps do not enable it, and copies cannot route traffic through the exit node. Link to Tailscale’s Linux setup instructions before directing operators to move services.

Summary
Operators running 2.0.x hit traps the docs never warned about. A Mysterium node moved onto the fenced bridge fails to start because one port in its UDP range is held by some other program. A proxied copy passes Test and earns nothing because the proxy refuses the earner's servers. And nothing explained how to choose what runs on a small box.
This adds the guidance:
ss, one range per host behind a shared IP, what each port costs indocker-proxymemory, and the order for changing the range on a live node.docker stats. One finding: through the tunnel,
nc -zreports a port open even when the proxy refused it, and even for an address where nothing exists. I reproduced that with the 2.0.7 tunnel image against a proxy that allows only port 443. The page warns about it and uses checks that need a reply from the far server.Strict docs build and site-check pass locally. A broken anchor turned the build red as expected.
