Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added migration and verification guidance for moving Mysterium nodes behind the network fence, including version requirements, redeployment, connectivity checks, and UDP port selection.
    • Expanded FAQs and setup guides with troubleshooting for redeployment failures, unreachable proxy services, and earnings issues.
    • Added instructions for testing proxy connectivity and setting up a Tailscale exit node with proxied copies.
    • Added guidance on measuring resource use and choosing services for small or remote machines.

…copies from earning

Moving a Mysterium node behind the fence, choosing a UDP range Docker can
always reserve, probing an earner's servers through a commercial proxy, using
a second site as an exit node, and measuring what each earner costs on a
small box.

Walkthrough

The documentation adds guidance for Mysterium network-fence migration and UDP port configuration, proxy connectivity and Tailscale exit nodes, and resource planning for small fleet machines.

Changes: Mysterium network-fence migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prepare and redeploy nodes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Low · up to 3e3e2

This documentation-only change adds useful Mysterium migration, proxy and sizing guidance. A few instructions could mislead operators: the advice for several nodes behind one public IP, a sysctl command that replaces existing reserved ports, and some diagnostic commands. These are worth fixing but do not block merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3e3e2

The new instructions can expose proxy credentials when copied with real passwords into a shell. The risk depends on the diagnostic machine, local access, and proxy connection. Application behavior and service permissions are unchanged, and the documented credentials are proxy credentials rather than dashboard passwords.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new instruction to diagnose proxies from “any machine” embeds proxy credentials in shell commands. Following it with real credentials expands the trusted credential-handling environment and can retain passwords in shell history or expose them to observers of command execution. This is a new manual handling path, not a new application credential API.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is the proxy credential used in a diagnostic session. Exploitation requires access to retained command history, observable execution, a compromised diagnostic host, or an unprotected proxy-authentication link. Provider authorization determines the credential’s ultimate scope; dashboard, earner-account, and provider-administrator authority are not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained local-disclosure findings concern the same new manual credential path. If an operator substitutes a real password, a reader of retained shell history can recover it after the diagnostic finishes. Process-argument exposure additionally depends on execution and platform protections; no actual credential compromise is demonstrated.
  • inferred — The retained transport finding concerns HTTP and SOCKS proxy authentication, which destination HTTPS does not protect. Those proxy protocol classes predate this PR; the recipe newly makes their direct use actionable but does not change runtime transport policy. Whether it materially broadens network exposure depends on the diagnostic route and provider protections, which are not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing documented runtime path uses encrypted storage, root-only credential files, and a separate earner process namespace. Docker-socket holders already cross that privileged boundary. The direct diagnostic commands operate outside these controls, while retaining HTTPS destinations without disabling certificate verification.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Constrain diagnostics to trusted machines, use a credential-input mechanism that avoids literal passwords in shell commands, and require protection of the proxy-authentication leg independently of destination HTTPS.

Explanation

The title names the main change: documentation that warns operators about the setup traps that stop Mysterium nodes and proxied copies from earning. The changeset adds and updates docs on firewall/fence placement, UDP port selection and conflicts, proxy reachability testing, a Tailscale exit-node guide, and small-machine resource budgeting, all matching the warning theme. The title is one sentence, 14 words, and has no file lists or emojis.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Include all containers in the snapshot.

The name filter omits containers without cashpilot- in their names, including externally started earners that the Dashboard can report. This hides their individual resource use when sizing the box. Remove the filter to show all running containers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve existing reserved ports.

If the host already has ip_local_reserved_ports entries, this sysctl -w command replaces them. Previously reserved ports can then receive automatic allocations and cause intermittent conflicts for other applications. Tell operators to read the current list and add the new range to it in both the live and persistent settings. (origin.kernel.org)

5. **Several hosts behind one public IP need one range each.** A router
forwards a port to one LAN address only, so two nodes in one house cannot
share a range. Give each host its own range with no overlap, and one
forward per host.

Do not recommend a second node on the same public IP.

Separate UDP forwards prevent port conflicts, but they do not let both nodes earn. The existing MystNodes guide says only one node can be active per public IP, and Mysterium confirms that extra nodes receive no traffic or rewards. State that each node also needs a distinct public IP. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Prevent the probe from bypassing the proxy.

If NO_PROXY or no_proxy matches the earner host, curl ignores -x and connects directly. A successful response can therefore give a false positive. Add --noproxy '' to both commands. (curl.se)

Do not attribute every reset to the proxy.
