test(review): cross-lane battery with real-host tier - #3362
Conversation
… and schema seams Drives a real gentle-ai binary end to end, outside CI: - opencode lane: the real transport plugin bytes through an emulated Task hook surface with HOST-assembled binding frames (lens and validator role), against a live scratch-repo lineage; host-shaped frames are known-red pending fix/opencode-host-binding - claude lane: low-risk lifecycle to gate allow, medium consent/v3 round-trip, and an optional --with-model real reviewer run - schema lane: every captured envelope validated against the published contracts/review-integration schemas; divergences fail the run Entry point: scripts/cross-lane-battery.sh --binary <path> [--with-model]
Extends the local battery with three lanes that spawn REAL host applications end to end against the binary under test, on top of the untouched deterministic tier: - host-codex: the compiled codex adapter spawns a real locked-down `codex exec` reviewer for a medium capture (--agent codex) and the lifecycle follows negotiated transitions to the approved receipt. - host-pi: the lens capture runs through the INSTALLED gentle-pi lib/review-host-relay.ts (byte-identical copy relocated out of node_modules for Node type-stripping), which spawns a brand-new locked-down print-mode pi subprocess; refuter/validator legs run through the Go-owned pi spawn (--execute). Requires and sets the gentle-pi.review-relay/v1 handshake. Print-mode probe documents that pi does load extensions headlessly, and why the extension-driven orchestrator flow is not a boundable lane. - host-opencode: a real headless `opencode run` session in a sandboxed HOME (real transport plugin, real synced review agents, copied auth, all lane gentle-ai state under the sandbox because the transport child inherits the host environment) must relay the start and completion frames through the live hooks before the lifecycle reaches the receipt - the lane that catches host-app behavior such as swallowed hook throws. Every with-host lane is bounded by a 12-minute per-command timeout, reports PASS/FAIL/SKIP(reason), records its envelopes into the schema lane, and the summary prints the real model runs spent on the dev subscription. correction_required from a real reviewer is reported as a legitimate outcome, mirroring the claude --with-model lane.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughAdds a local cross-lane battery with deterministic Claude, OpenCode, and schema checks, optional model execution, and optional Codex, Pi, and OpenCode host integrations. The battery captures lifecycle results, validates published envelopes, reports costs, and enforces bounded command execution. ChangesCross-lane battery

Pull request overview
Adds a local cross-lane integration battery (go run ./scripts/crosslane via scripts/cross-lane-battery.sh) intended to deterministically exercise the review lifecycle seams (host-frame binding, provider role frames, schema conformance), with optional real-model (--with-model) and real-host (--with-host) tiers for Codex, Pi, and OpenCode.
Changes:
- Introduces a Go harness that drives deterministic OpenCode + Claude review flows, captures emitted envelopes, and validates them against published
contracts/review-integration/*/schemas. - Adds a real-host tier that sandboxes and runs
codex exec, a print-modepirelay, and a headlessopencode runsession with bounded timeouts and step budgets. - Adds Node/TypeScript hook harnesses (
.mts) to emulate OpenCode hook surfaces and to drive the installed gentle-pi host relay.

Require a schema identity for each capabilities response.
Line 254 and Line 257 accept {} as a successful response. record then excludes that document because schema is empty. The schema lane cannot detect the contract violation.
Fail these checks when schema is empty. A non-empty unknown schema will then remain captured and fail schema validation.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Fail the lane when a status or consent command exits non-zero.
These calls use the returned envelope but do not require code == 0. A command can emit a valid partial envelope and then fail. The battery can then execute later transitions and report a pass after a failed lifecycle boundary.
Check the exit code before using each status or consent envelope. Preserve the exit code at Lines 55, 73, 114, 146, and 177 instead of discarding it.

Validate the post-apply gate before passing the model lane.
Lines 187-189 return immediately after an approved receipt. This path never stages the reviewed candidate, requests the negotiated pre-commit gate transition, or asserts an allow result. The optional model lane can pass while the documented post-apply gate fails.
After an approved receipt, derive its lineage and run the same staged review.validate flow used by the low-risk lane.

Which Node.js version runs .mts TypeScript files natively without --experimental-strip-types?
💡 Result:
Node.js executes.mts files natively without requiring the --experimental-strip-types flag starting from version 23.6.0 [1]. In versions prior to 23.6.0, the flag was necessary to enable type stripping [2][3]. As of current stable versions (such as Node.js 24 and 26), type stripping is enabled by default [4][5][6]. When running.mts files, Node.js treats them as ES modules [4][5]. The native execution works by "type stripping," which removes erasable TypeScript syntax (such as type annotations, interfaces, and type aliases) and executes the remaining JavaScript [4][2]. Node.js does not perform type checking; for that, you should use the TypeScript compiler (tsc) separately [4][2]. Note that while the feature is now stable, it is limited to erasable syntax [2]. TypeScript features that require JavaScript code generation—such as enums, namespaces, or parameter properties—are not handled by this default stripping mechanism and would require additional configuration or a dedicated transpilation step [2].

Node.js official documentation type stripping enabled by default v22.18.0 v23.6.0 .mts
💡 Result:
Yes, Node.js type stripping is enabled by default in both Node.js v22.18.0 and Node.js v23.6.0 [1][2][3]. Starting with these versions, Node.js natively supports executing TypeScript files that contain only erasable TypeScript syntax (such as type annotations, interfaces, type aliases, and import type) without requiring any additional flags [1][4]. Node.js performs this by removing (stripping) the erasable syntax and replacing it with whitespace before execution, without performing any type checking [1][5]. Key details regarding this feature include: - Default Behavior: Node.js now automatically detects and executes TypeScript files (e.g.,.ts,.mts) using this lightweight process [1][4]. - Disabling the Feature: If you need to disable type stripping, you can use the --no-strip-types flag [1][5]. - Limitations: This feature is designed to be lightweight and does not support TypeScript syntax that requires JavaScript code generation, such as enums, parameter properties, or namespaces [4][6][7]. Additionally, it ignores tsconfig.json files, meaning features like path aliasing are not supported [5][3]. - Stability: Type stripping became stable in Node.js v24.12.0 and v25.2.0 [1][6]. Prior to becoming enabled by default and stable, the feature was available via experimental flags such as --experimental-strip-types [4][8]. For projects requiring full TypeScript support, including features like code generation or tsconfig.json compliance, the official documentation recommends using a third-party TypeScript runner or transpilation step [5].

Add a Node.js version check or document the minimum version.
scripts/crosslane/opencode.go runs node harness.mts, which requires Node.js 22.18.0+ or 23.6.0+ for unflagged native type stripping. The current prerequisite check only verifies that node exists. Older versions fail with a syntax error instead of a clear prerequisite message. The CI workflow uses Node.js 24, but the local prerequisite is not enforced.

Child environments are built with append(os.Environ(), ...) instead of mergeEnvironment. Both sites append an override to the inherited environment, which leaves two entries for the same variable. Go's exec package resolves duplicates by keeping the last entry, but the Node children read the environment through libc, which commonly returns the first. The override can therefore be ignored in the child. mergeEnvironment in scripts/crosslane/host.go lines 28-43 was written to remove this ambiguity and is already used correctly by openCodeSandboxSessionEnvironment in scripts/crosslane/hostopencode.go line 237.
scripts/crosslane/opencode.go#L405-L405: replace the appendedPATHoverride with amergeEnvironmentcall so the harness shim directory reliably wins for thenodechild and thegentle-aispawn.scripts/crosslane/hostpi.go#L183-L188: replace the appendedpiRelayContractEnvwith amergeEnvironmentcall so the exactGENTLE_PI_REVIEW_RELAY_CONTRACThandshake value cannot be shadowed by an inherited one.

Preserve numeric literals with UseNumber during re-serialization.
json.Unmarshal into map[string]any decodes every JSON number to float64. Re-marshalling then reformats those numbers. An integer above 2^53 loses precision, and other values can change representation, for example 1000000 to 1e+06.
The doc comment at lines 436-438 states that this function preserves the binding semantics at the field level and changes only the key order. With float64 decoding, that guarantee does not hold for numeric fields such as order. The validator lane would then report a rejection caused by a changed value, not by key reordering.

Count every schema divergence.
Lines 41-44 retain one diagnostic for an unpublished identity. Line 74 then reports len(state.failures) as the divergence count. For example, three envelopes with the same unpublished identity report 1/3 envelope(s) diverge, although all three fail validation. Track the failure count separately from the bounded diagnostic list.
