docs(claude): split CLAUDE.md into path-scoped rules; tier the delivery loop - #300
Conversation
…ry loop CLAUDE.md shrinks from 45 KB to about 12 KB. The 15 core invariants and the module map move verbatim into .claude/rules/*.md with `paths:` frontmatter, so each loads only when Claude reads or edits a file in its area. CLAUDE.md keeps a one-line summary of each invariant plus the rule file name. Following the Claude Opus 5.5 prompting guide: - add Autonomy (stop/go rules, the four early-stop patterns to avoid), Finish line, and Report (three fixed headings) sections; - make dikw-core-delivery-workflow the only definition of the loop (CLAUDE.md and the skill had drifted to different step orders); - tier the review step by risk (S: /code-review; M: + codex <= 3 rounds; L: + dikw-core-fresh-review); - ask reviewers only for merge-blocking findings with file:line, why, and how to show the failure. Also: replace 18 dangling memory-file references with the rule they stood for, drop references to plugins that are not installed, call the codex CLI directly (the /codex:review command is user-only), and extend tools/check_doc_refs.py to scan .claude/rules/** so the moved text stays under the doc-reference drift gate. New and rewritten text follows roughly 80% of ASD-STE100 (short sentences, one instruction each). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Tier S now covers docs outside src/ only; api_synth.py and src/dikw_core/prompts/** are tier L (they are K-layer authoring code). - Triage asks reviewers for merge-blocking findings first but still fixes every actionable finding, as before. - retrieval.md and knowledge-layer.md also load for config.py; storage-concurrency.md also loads for the routes that take ingest_lock. - Fix the fresh-review step number; approve deleting the merged branch and add the destructive-action stop to the block signals so CLAUDE.md and the skill agree; say "tags front-matter key" in the summary. Scope the knowledge rule to the provenance API
When a change edits api_graph.py::read_provenance or server/routes_pages.py::get_page_provenance, none of these patterns loads this rule, even though those files implement the reverse-provenance behavior documented here, including the Layer.SOURCE gate that prevents malformed K-page paths from appearing as derived pages. Because the shortened CLAUDE.md does not retain that condition, add these API and route files to paths so provenance endpoint changes receive the invariant automatically.

Fixed in 8b68c2f: knowledge-layer.md now also loads for src/dikw_core/api_graph.py and src/dikw_core/server/routes_pages.py, and CLAUDE.md gained a one-line summary for provenance reconciliation.

Load the observability rule for telemetry configuration
Changes to config.py::TelemetryConfig do not match this rule, although that class defines the dikw.yml telemetry settings and is passed directly to configure_telemetry. In that scenario Claude instead loads unrelated config-scoped rules and misses the detailed server-only bootstrap and client-env separation documented here; include src/dikw_core/config.py and its relevant config tests in this rule's paths.

| - **Karpathy's rule:** *scoping is deterministic, reasoning is probabilistic*. Navigation (source listing, chunk lookup, link traversal) is deterministic SQL/file I/O. LLMs enter only at synth — the engine-internal authoring leg that writes the K layer. **Answer synthesis is not a `dikw-core` verb**; `retrieve` returns ranked chunks + page refs and the agent layer runs its own LLM on the result. W layer is hand-written (no engine LLM call writes wisdom). The invariant forbids **generative LLM reasoning** on the read path, not learned **scoring** models: the optional cross-encoder reranker (below) is a deterministic `(query, chunk) → relevance` scorer — the same epistemic category as the embedding model already in retrieval — so it is part of *scoping* (re-ordering the deterministically-retrieved candidate set), not *reasoning*. An **LLM-as-reranker is deliberately excluded** (it would put generative reasoning on the read path). See `docs/adr/0006-reranker-deterministic-scoping.md`. | ||
| - **Optional rerank stage.** A `RerankProvider` (`providers/base.py`, impl `OpenAICompatReranker` in `providers/rerank.py` over the Jina/Cohere-compatible `/rerank` shape; built by `build_reranker`) reorders the fused candidates inside `HybridSearcher.search` — after RRF fusion + the source-diversity penalty, before the `[:limit]` truncation. It scores the top `retrieval.rerank_candidate_k` (default 40, clamped to ≥ `limit`) fused chunks, re-sorts by relevance, then truncates; the window's chunk records are reused for materialization (no second `get_chunks`), and `Hit.score` becomes the rerank score. It never adds chunks outside the fused pool (so `recall@100` is unchanged — a change there is a bug). **No storage adapter changes; `retrieve`'s response shape is unchanged.** Provider wiring (`rerank`/`rerank_model`/`rerank_base_url`/`rerank_api_key_env`/`rerank_timeout_seconds`/`rerank_batch_size`) lives on `ProviderConfig` (a validator requires the three wiring fields once `rerank` is set, like the `openai_codex` base-url validator); behavioural knobs (`rerank_enabled`, `rerank_candidate_k`) on `RetrievalConfig`. The `rerank_candidate_k` window is split into `rerank_batch_size` (default 16, Gitee-safe) batches per `/rerank` call — vendors cap the `documents` array (Gitee: ≤25), and a cross-encoder scores each `(query, doc)` independently so batching doesn't change scores. **On once configured** — unlike `graph_enabled` (default-off), `rerank_enabled` defaults `True`, so setting `provider.rerank` is the opt-in and a base that configures none runs no rerank leg; `rerank_enabled=False` is a kill switch (used by eval to A/B off-vs-on at one config). The default `dikw init` scaffold (`config.default_config`) now ships a Gitee `bge-m3` embedder **and** a Gitee `bge-reranker-v2-m3` reranker keyed by one `GITEE_API_KEY`, so a fresh base reranks out of the box (OpenAI has no `/rerank` endpoint, so the prior OpenAI embedding default couldn't ship a matching reranker). `api.retrieve` (and `eval/runner.py::_run_queries`) build the reranker via `build_reranker(cfg.provider)` and thread it into `from_config`; it's closed in a local `finally` (lifetime is the single retrieve call). **Read-path resilience:** a transient rerank failure (5xx/408/429/timeout/connect drop) degrades to the fused order (logged at **ERROR** — a configured leg that failed, no 500); a permanent `ProviderError` (401/403/404, bad model/key) propagates so a misconfig fails fast — same classification as the embedding path. A transient **query-embedding** failure degrades the same way (the vec leg drops, FTS + graph carry the hybrid query, logged at ERROR), but **only in hybrid mode** — single-leg `vector`/`bm25` ablations have no FTS to fall back to, so they re-raise (eval purity); a permanent query-embed error always propagates (→ 500). An enabled-but-unconfigured reranker (`rerank_enabled` set, `provider.rerank` None) logs one **WARNING** per retrieve so the silently-off leg is visible (`api_retrieve._retrieve_inner`). |

Clarify what recall@100 measures.
Eval recall@100 measures relevant items in the returned top 100, not recall of the full fused pool. When rerank_candidate_k exceeds 100, reranking can move a candidate across the truncation cutoff and change recall@100, even though it adds no candidates outside the fused pool.
🐛 Suggested fix
-It never adds chunks outside the fused pool (so `recall@100` is unchanged — a change there is a bug).
+It never adds chunks outside the fused pool. When `rerank_candidate_k` exceeds the output limit, reranking can change top-100 membership and therefore `recall@100`; this metric measures the returned top 100, not the fused candidate pool.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Not changing this in this PR. The sentence was moved verbatim from CLAUDE.md, and this PR changes structure only, not invariants. The point stands for rerank_candidate_k > the eval limit: then reranking can move a candidate across the top-100 cutoff. With the default (40, clamped to >= limit) the window equals the limit, so recall@100 holds. A precise rewording belongs in a retrieval PR with an eval check.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@helebest Understood. No change is needed in this structure-only PR. With the default window clamped to the eval limit of 100, reranking preserves top-100 membership. The clarification for larger windows can stay with a retrieval PR and an eval check.

Learning: In OpenDIKW/dikw-core retrieval, `rerank_candidate_k` defaults to 40 and is clamped to at least the output limit. For an eval limit of 100, the default rerank window equals the limit, so reranking preserves top-100 membership and `recall100`. When `rerank_candidate_k` exceeds that limit, reranking can change top-100 membership without adding candidates outside the fused pool.

From /code-review, codex, CodeRabbit, and the fresh-context reviewers: - Quote-free description without ": " so the delivery skill's YAML frontmatter parses; drop the stale "6 block signals" count. - Receipt template uses `codex (N rounds)` and `fresh-review **<verdict>**` again, so tools/loop_metrics.py keeps scraping it; a new test pins the template shape. - Tier L uses full src/dikw_core/ paths (persist_* matched nothing) and also covers every src/ file that the K-layer, persist, retrieval, storage, and delete rules scope. - The question in step 1 is asked only when a decision blocks the work. - CLAUDE.md: summaries for the four invariants that had none; client/* must not import eval either (tests/test_layering_contract.py); restore the exact alpha warning that docs/architecture.md quotes. - Rule globs: knowledge-layer adds api_graph.py and routes_pages.py (provenance endpoints); observability adds config.py (TelemetryConfig). - Restore the receipt's honest limit (it records, it does not re-run). - .pre-commit-config.yaml and docs/verification-rubric.md point at the renamed CLAUDE.md sections.
