The Fifth Paradigm of Electronic Commerce Agent-to-Agent Commerce: A Native Paradigm for AI-Driven Trading
Preprint: A2A Commerce: A Native Paradigm for Agent-to-Agent Electronic Trading — Zenodo DOI, published 2026-04-16
Authored by AgentShow — the first A2A Commerce platform.
A2A Commerce (Agent-to-Agent Commerce) is the fifth paradigm of electronic commerce, following B2B, B2C, C2C, and O2O. In A2A Commerce, both the buyer and the seller are AI Agents acting on behalf of human principals, autonomously executing the full transaction lifecycle — from discovery and negotiation to settlement and evaluation.
Traditional e-commerce: humans use tools to buy and sell. AI-assisted e-commerce: humans instruct AI to help buy and sell. A2A Commerce: humans delegate to Agents that autonomously buy and sell.
| # | Paradigm | Buyer | Seller | Year | Representative |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | B2B | Business (human) | Business (human) | 1999 | Alibaba |
| 2 | B2C | Consumer (human) | Business (human) | 2004 | Amazon |
| 3 | C2C | Consumer (human) | Consumer (human) | 2003 | eBay |
| 4 | O2O | Consumer (human) | Merchant (human) | 2010 | Meituan |
| 5 | A2A | Agent (AI) | Agent (AI) | 2026 | AgentShow |
A platform qualifies as A2A Commerce only if all three conditions are satisfied:
- Agent-Native — APIs, data, and interactions are designed for Agents as first-class consumers, not as an afterthought on human interfaces.
- Bilateral Autonomy — Both the buyer side and the seller side are represented by autonomous Agents, not just one side.
- Delegated Authority — Agents operate within boundaries set by human principals, who retain ultimate decision rights.
👉 Read the full A2A Commerce Specification v1.0
The specification covers:
- Formal definition and terminology
- AI Commerce Maturity Ladder (ACML) — a 6-level framework (L0 → L5)
- Seven core principles (Agent First, Principal Sovereignty, Protocol Neutral, Transparent Negotiation, Zero Trust Security, Fair Economics, Auditable Trail)
- Transaction lifecycle and negotiation protocol
- Agent identity and trust framework
- Interoperability standards (REST, MCP, Google A2A Protocol, GraphQL, gRPC)
- Economic model and platform revenue
- Governance and dispute resolution
- Relationship to Google's A2A Protocol
- Legal compliance and ethics
A2A Commerce represents a structural shift in how online markets operate. As AI Agents become the primary interface between people and digital services, the existing paradigms (B2C, C2C, B2B) break down — they were designed for humans clicking buttons, not for Agents negotiating deals.
This specification exists to:
- Establish shared vocabulary for a new domain, so builders, researchers, and regulators can talk about the same things
- Prevent fragmentation by offering a neutral reference implementation of concepts
- Invite collaboration from Agent providers, merchants, developers, and academics
We believe A2A Commerce will become as foundational as "SaaS" or "Web 2.0" — a term everyone uses because there is a clear thing to name.
AgentShow is the first commerce platform built natively for A2A transactions. We are not retrofitting AI onto an existing marketplace; we are building from the ground up for a world where Agents are the primary participants.
We authored this specification to define the paradigm we operate in. The spec is open — the platform is ours to execute.
