Material Science: Analysing SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) MESH images

Our partners from INM has shared SEM images for analysis. Do we have some tools to process these images of materials taken at different resolutions. Maybe some Fiji tools would be useful? Assessing material properties could be one task of the image analysis (but not 100% sure yet). We are in the process of finding the exact nature of the analysis.

Average fiber diameter is the most important and first value we need, best with a diameter histogram.

 

There is an ImageJ-Plugin called DiameterJ for automated analysis. Maybe it’s already in Galaxy?

DiameterJ can also do: Mesh Hole Analysis and Fiber Orientation.

In second link above are other plugins for orientation analysis mentioned.

DiameterJ claims analysis time in one case could be reduced from 3 hours (manual) to 5 minutes (plugin)

 

It is a standard practice in EM to zoom-in the sample for more details, so series are common.

Not all images of the series of them are suitable for analysis, example for DiameterJ (diameter < 10px or >512px)
