so a relative CARGO_TARGET_DIR is resolved against REPO_ROOT, matching the
build’s working directory; preserve absolute target directories and the existing
default when CARGO_TARGET_DIR is unset.
- Around line 187-189: Update the existing-archive validation around
candidate_descriptor so it compares the full descriptor with the canonical
descriptor, allowing only the per-binary sha256 value to differ; reject archives
whose name, protocol, executable, or other descriptor fields do not match.
Review comments at @src/component/protocol.rs:
- Line 40: Update the `Committed` schema row in the module header to include
`rows_removed:u32` between `rows_written:u32` and `bytes_written:u64`, matching
the fields handled by `encode_message` and `decode_message`.
Review comments at @src/component/store.rs:
- Around line 789-803: Update journal recovery in the function containing
`Journal::decode` to complete the `previous` state before writing the target
snapshot: when the current snapshot is valid and older than the journal target,
write its original bytes to `previous`; when no snapshot exists, remove
`previous`, treating a missing file as success. Leave `previous` unchanged for
unreadable snapshots, and preserve the existing replay flow.

- Around line 358-370: Update the Linux and Android generic save/load paths

Add the component-server half of bitty#2495: canonical bitty-component.toml (storage 0.0.1, protocol [1,1], bitty-storage), strict descriptor validation, a versioned length-prefixed stdio protocol for open namespace / read snapshot / commit batch / rollback / shutdown, and a journaled namespace store with atomic temp+rename commits, crash replay, previous-revision rollback, cross-process flock, and strict root containment (the wire carries no path). Package the Linux x86_64 component and cover commit, restart, SIGKILL durability, rollback, stale revisions, paging, namespace/row/byte bounds, oversize and malformed frames, path-shaped wire names, lock contention, and independent journal recovery. Core host client, capability gate, XDG migration, parity, and linked-dependency removal remain follow-ups; no Core files change.
…al recovery Resolve a relative CARGO_TARGET_DIR against REPO_ROOT before locating the built binary, validate every existing archive's full descriptor (not just its version) before adding it to SHA256SUMS, add the missing rows_removed field to the protocol schema table, and complete the previous-revision step during journal replay so a rollback after recovery cannot skip a revision. Cover both recovery cases and same-version descriptor drift in tests.
…r races Replace path-based namespace state access with directory-fd anchored openat/renameat/unlinkat operations on Linux/Android. Lock, snapshot, previous, and journal are opened O_NOFOLLOW and verified regular; temps are O_CREAT|O_EXCL|O_NOFOLLOW; commits and reads verify the namespace fd is still the directory named under the root and fail closed after replacement. Hardened the generic atomic writer with an anchored parent, exclusive no-follow temps, anchored capped loads and sweep, and same-parent temp validation. Other platforms fail closed with Unsupported rather than falling back; relative XDG_STATE_HOME is ignored. Add failing-first store/atomic/packed-server regressions for existing and absent outside symlink targets, all four state members, namespace replacement, and temp redirection. Cleanup-invariant and Windows namespace-grammar findings are tracked as CTX-0009 and CTX-0010.
…inty contract Restore protocol v1 code stability: Internal stays 10 and Uncertain is added at 11, with explicit host guidance for unknown kinds. Document attachment identity as the opened directory inode and the path check as best-effort detection, not atomic with the stdio acknowledgement. Map every post-write recovery and attachment failure to Uncertain, evict cached handles on uncertain reads as well as commits, and report detached namespaces as uncertain instead of corrupt. Preserve post-rename directory-fsync uncertainty on Unix and skip the unsupported Windows directory sync with an explicit no-claim. Fix replacement, generic symlinked-parent and missing-parent load handling, and add recovery, lock, archive-member and Windows path tests.
A durable journal with an unreadable snapshot must return Uncertain and keep recovery evidence instead of reporting a plain I/O failure, so the host cannot blindly retry from a cached revision.

…fails Capture the prior `previous` image before the commit rewrites it, and put it back (or restore its absence) when the snapshot rename fails before publication. An unconfirmed restoration now returns uncertain instead of io and keeps the journal for recovery, so a later rollback can never restore the current revision as a no-op. Reject a rollback image whose revision is not exactly current-1 as corrupt, covering equal, newer, and skipping images. Document that committed is success-only, that a pre-publication rejection returns error without mutation, and the rollback/uncertainty contract. Add deterministic regression tests for the failure ordering, absent previous, unconfirmed restoration, corrupt previous, and no-op rollback.

A request-scoped Error frame carries the typed kind for that request; only a connection-level Error (request id 0), unexpected EOF, or exit 3 means the component was lost. State that split in the host-client guidance so a host does not restart on every rejected request.
First half of bitty-terminal/bitty#2495: package the storage mechanics as an executable component (
storage0.0.1, protocol 1.0) with a strict manifest, a bounded length-prefixed stdio protocol, journaled namespace commits, a Linux x86_64 tarball, and live protocol tests. The Core host client, capability gate, XDG migration, parity, and removal of the linked dependency follow in a separate Core PR; no Core file changes here.Head:

bitty-component.toml(storage,0.0.1,[1, 1],bitty-storage) with the zero-digest packaging sentinel, plus a hand-written fail-closed descriptor parser (src/component/descriptor.rs) that rejects unknown/duplicate keys, bad grammar, oversize input, and a placeholder digest at install time.src/component/protocol.rs:length:u32be payload;Hello/HelloAck,OpenNamespace,ReadSnapshot,CommitBatch,Rollback,Shutdown; typedErrorand responses. Hard bounds: 256 KiB frame, 64 namespaces, 4096 rows, 1 MiB snapshot, 128 KiB value, 128 rows / 240 KiB per batch or read page. Reads are paged so a 1 MiB snapshot never needs an over-frame response. Zero request ids, unknown tags, trailing bytes, and path-shaped names fail closed.src/component/store/: one locked directory per namespace (snapshot, previous, journal, lock). Commit captures the priorpreviousimage, publishes the journal first (temp+fsync+rename), thenprevious, thensnapshot; a pre-publication failure restores the captured image (or its absence) before reportingio, and recovery replays a newer journal, discards an equal/older one, and fails closed on malformed state.Rollbackrestores the previous revision as a new monotonic revision. The request-rate asymmetry is not a vulnerability and is not changed.Rollback-image restoration (review round 3)
io.publishcaptures the priorpreviousimage (or its absence) before step 2. If the snapshot rename fails before publication, it restores that image, removes the journal durably, and reportsio: the committed revision and the N-1 rollback image are unchanged. A restoration that cannot be confirmed returnsuncertain(neverio) and keeps the journal, so recovery completes the commit instead of leaving revision N in both slots.rollbackaccepts only apreviousimage whose revision is exactlycurrent - 1; an equal, newer, or skipping image iscorrupt_state. The historical failure mode (revision N in both files) now fails closed instead of acknowledgingrestored_revision = N.README.mdseparatesCommitted(success only) from a pre-publicationError(no mutation), and documents the rollback/restoration/uncertainty contract; wire codes stay additive (internal10,uncertain11), and unknown kinds are a generic host failure.previouswas rewritten: the N-1 image is restored, the journal is removed, and rollback restores N-1; the absent-previous variant stays absent; a forced restoration failure returnsuncertainand replays on reopen;previous >= current, skipping images, and a no-op rollback arecorrupt_state.Verification
