Priority: P1 | Area: ui | Labels: fix, P1, area:ui | Milestone: v0.1.0 | RFC: OQ-036 | Task: CTX-1297

Closes #1803

Summary

  • prune an empty Workspace after closing its last tiled Panel when another Workspace still owns panels
  • preserve whole-window close behavior for the final Panel
  • keep zoom, float, primary PTY, hidden-session busy confirmation, repeat, and Esc semantics correct
  • add focused regression coverage for zoomed and unzoomed close paths

Verification

  • targeted CTX-1297 close/workspace tests
  • just check with TMPDIR=/run/user/1000 and XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000
  • just test with BITTY_PERF_DIR=/mnt/data/Workspace/Projects/bitty-terminal/bitty-perf
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • git diff --check

Performance benchmark output includes pre-existing ABOVE_BUDGET observations for PB-3 reclaim and PB-6 throughput-floor; the gate exited successfully.

Implementation is submitted for review; no release/tag claim.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Closing a workspace’s last tiled panel now closes the workspace when other panels remain in the window, rather than leaving an empty workspace.
    • Closing the window’s final panel now requests confirmation when a foreground job is running in the panel being closed.
    • Pending or cancelled close confirmations now preserve zoom state. Workspaces with floating panels retain the workspace when a pane session closes.

📝 Walkthrough

Closing a workspace's last tiled panel now checks jobs across views that the operation will destroy. Pending or cancelled closes preserve zoom. After confirmation, the close path prunes the workspace when no floated views remain; otherwise, it closes the focused pane session and keeps the workspace.

Changes: Workspace panel close

Layer / File(s) Summary
Close confirmation job lookup
crates/bitty-runtime/src/runtime/close_confirm.rs
The runtime adds view_close_request_for_views, which checks the requested view, other doomed views in order, and the primary PTY when its owning view is doomed.
Close target and confirmation gate
crates/bitty-terminal/src/chrome_keys.rs
CloseView uses the real tiled layout, including the zoom backup, to identify the views being closed. It requests confirmation before restoring zoom or changing the layout.
Workspace close outcome
crates/bitty-terminal/src/chrome_keys.rs
The close path prunes a workspace with no floated views after its last tiled panel closes. Tests cover workspace pruning, focus transfer, zoomed closes, and the physical close key.

Closing the last tiled panel beside a pinned panel unexpectedly replaces the sole workspace. This is a narrow, recoverable case that should be fixed before merge if practical.

Explanation

The reported changes stay within the stated UI close-flow scope. CloseView implements workspace pruning, final-panel window close behavior, zoom handling, and confirmation behavior. The runtime confirmation API and focused tests support those close paths.

Independent review — APPROVE

Reviewer: separate agent (guard-dispatched, bounded 6-command protocol).
Commit reviewed: e9ee148f (rebased onto 7aa44d86; closes #1803).

VERDICT: APPROVE — the change reverses the CTX-1039/#1843 ghost-tile semantics: when the active workspace is down to its last tiled panel it is pruned (workspace_close_at) and focus follows the survivor; close-confirm is recomputed against the real doomed views via backup_leaf_count/backup_leaf_ids_for_seq, correctly handling the zoom-proxy case (proxy leaf ==1 must not read as "last panel"). All newly referenced APIs exist and the call sites type-check.

Findings (non-blocking; consider follow-ups):

  • chrome_keys.rs:1463 — prune_last_tiled_workspace gates on self.runtime.floated_count() == 0. Confirm floated_count() is per-workspace, not window-global: a float in another workspace would wrongly suppress the prune and re-introduce the ghost-tile symptom. Also the workspace_close_at Err branch only logs a warning with no close_pane_session fallback.
  • close_confirm.rs:186-201 — the armed target stays the focused view while the banner/summary may derive from a doomed sibling's job; cancellation/repeat semantics are preserved (tested) but no test asserts the mismatch is intentionally benign.
  • Test quality — new tests depend on real sleep 30 subprocesses + 10s wall-clock polling (flakiness risk on loaded CI); no test exercises the floats>0 (prune suppressed) path or the workspace_close_at Err branch.

Recorded by guard tick; comment-only because the reviewing harness shares one GitHub identity (cannot self-approve). Merge gate = this verdict + green CI.
