feat(cli): reverse migration (stash decrypt) for moving columns back to plaintext - #1193
Conversation
Extract the forward backfill's keyset loop into runChunkedMigration and run runBackfill on it unchanged (same SQL, same cs_migrations events and details). The same engine now drives runDecryptBackfill, the reverse direction: - one bulkDecrypt (one ZeroKMS request) per chunk, default 500 rows; - per-row decrypt failures (typically lock-context-bound values) are skipped, counted and left NULL, so countUndecrypted keeps counting them; - a first chunk that decrypts nothing throws UndecryptableBatchError before writing (credentials for the wrong keyset), unless opted out; - values are cast to the plaintext column's declared type (columnSqlType); - reverse leak guard: an EQL envelope is never written as plaintext. Reverse events/phases are recorded against the ENCRYPTED column, so the two directions never share a resume cursor. Also adds plaintextTypeForEqlDomain (the inverse type mapping), listColumnIndexes, countEqlColumnsInDatabase and removeManifestColumn, and keeps the CLI's exhaustive phase switches total. …ction Move the Drizzle-scaffold-or-timestamped-SQL migration writer and the stem sanitiser out of `encrypt drop`, the aligned-table renderer out of `encrypt status`, and `detectPkColumn` out of `encrypt backfill`, into encrypt/lib so the reverse (`stash decrypt`) commands reuse them instead of copying them. No behaviour change: the forward tests pass unmodified. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…gration Mirror the encrypt lifecycle back to plaintext (CIP-4165): - decrypt plan: read-only overview, or with --table the nullable plaintext twins with the type mapped back from each EQL domain (Drizzle schema lines for drizzle-kit generate; a reviewed SQL migration elsewhere). - decrypt backfill: same flags and engine as encrypt backfill; one bulkDecrypt per chunk; lock-context-bound values are skipped, counted and reported. - decrypt drop: gated on the `decrypted` phase, the RECORDED twin and live coverage; the migration re-checks coverage at apply time, drops the EQL-term indexes explicitly, drops the column, and with --uninstall-eql removes EQL v3 when it was the last encrypted column. - decrypt status: per-column reverse phase, progress and undecryptable count. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nd trip README and stash-cli skill: the reverse lifecycle, type mapping, the lock-context limitation, credentials, and --uninstall-eql. The manual scripts/e2e-encrypt.sh now decrypts the encrypted column back and checks the plaintext matches the original values. Changeset for stash and @cipherstash/migrate (minor). Review of the reverse lifecycle. The shared engine refactor is faithful: I compared runBackfill before and after, and the SQL, events and details are the same. Test coverage is good. CI is green. Two data-safety defects block merge. They are both about stale plaintext. Neither one is in the earlier review comments.
Blocking
1. A twin that already holds data is trusted without a check. This can lose data.
resolveDecryptPair selects the original plaintext name from .cipherstash/migrations.json first. In a forward rollout that has not run encrypt drop yet, that column still exists and is full. Then:
decrypt planprints "already exists — nothing to add" (plan.ts:120).decrypt backfillselects only rows where the twin is NULL. Thus it writes almost nothing and recordsdecrypted.decrypt dropfinds zero uncovered rows and drops the ciphertext.
The forward guidance tells users to remove the dual-write code when reads move to the encrypted column (skills/stash-encryption/SKILL.md:966). After that, the plaintext column is stale for every row updated since the switch. The reverse flow keeps the stale values and drops the only current copy. Nothing warns the user, and --force is the only fix. The user must know to use it.
Fix: on the first reverse run, if the twin already contains non-NULL values, refuse unless the operator passes --force or an explicit acknowledgement. Alternatively, read the forward state for (table, twin), and refuse when the twin is the forward source column and that column is not dropped. Add a test for this case.
2. The cutover guidance breaks the invariants that backfill --force and drop rely on.
backfill.ts:323 tells Drizzle users to "stop writing the encrypted column once reads are switched". After that step:
- A user who clears a value writes plaintext NULL, but the old ciphertext stays.
decrypt dropthen refuses, and its message tells the user to re-run the backfill. The backfill writes the old value back into the row. Cleared data (for example, an erasure request) comes back. --forceoverwrites newer plaintext with the old decrypted value.backfill.ts:152,decrypt.ts:106-108andskills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:687all say that--forceis "not destructive". That is only true while dual-writes continue.
Fix: tell users to keep dual-writing both columns until the drop migration is applied. Change the "not destructive" text to state that condition. This change is in customer-facing skill text, so it ships in the tarball.
Earlier point still open
CodeRabbit's cast-error point at decrypt.ts:434 (plaintext in the error event details.message) has no reply yet.

These do not block.
engine.ts:142: on resume, pendingalso counts the rows that were skipped before the cursor, sorowsTotalcounts them two times. A resumed run with skips ends below 100%, and the final progress line atbackfill.ts:184does not print.decrypt.ts:59-61: the docstring says the cursor stays "untouched". ButUndecryptableBatchErrorwrites anerrorevent, which hides the last checkpoint (engine.ts:135). The next run starts again from the first primary key. Correct the text, or keep the checkpoint as the resume point.backfill.ts:265: the dual-write gate passes for any reverse state, includingencrypted-droppedfrom an earlier lifecycle. If a user encrypts the same column again and then reverses it again, the gate does not ask. Pass the gate only fordecrypt-dual-writinganddecrypting.drop.ts:175-201: the command writesencrypted_droppedand removes the manifest entry when it generates the file, not when the file is applied. If the apply-time check aborts, the manifest entry is gone.--chunk-size: decrypt validates it, which is better than the gap that #1194 fixes for encrypt. ButNumber()accepts1e3and0x10, and there is no upper limit. The write binds two parameters for each row (decrypt.ts:419-425), so a chunk size above 32767 exceeds the Postgres limit of 65535 parameters. This failure occurs after the ZeroKMS call. When #1194 merges, use itsparseChunkSizehere too, and add a maximum.decrypt.ts:257-259: aNULL_PLAINTEXTskip blocksdroppermanently. The skipped-rows text gives the lock-context remedy, which does not apply to this code.- Skills: AGENTS.md maps
@cipherstash/migratelifecycle changes toskills/stash-encryptiontoo. That skill has no reference to the reverse path. Add a short pointer tostash-cli's Decrypt section. Also add the lock-context limitation toskills/stash-auth, which is the canonical lock-context skill. registry.ts:94: the--plaintext-columnhelp text does not mention the<column>_plaintextfallback, but the skill does.
I could not run the tests locally because the @cipherstash/auth native binding was not built in my worktree. I used the CI results. The registry flags agree with skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md. I compared them in the source because stash manifest --json needs the same binding.
… after a failed run A failed chunk write now throws PlaintextWriteError with only the SQLSTATE, constraint, column and type names. Postgres echoes the input of a failed cast, and on the reverse path that input is decrypted plaintext; the engine stored the database's message in the cs_migrations error event. The reverse backfill also: - resumes from an error event, which records the last committed cursor, so a failed run no longer restarts from the first primary key (the engine now advances its counters only after COMMIT, so that cursor is trustworthy); - counts rowsTotal only past the resume cursor, so rows skipped before it are not counted twice and a resumed run reaches 100%; - refuses a chunk size outside 1..32767 before any request: each row binds two parameters and Postgres caps a statement at 65535; - reports the primary keys of rows whose ciphertext decrypts to null. The forward backfill keeps its resume behaviour and event details. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ntil the drop decrypt backfill only fills rows whose plaintext twin is NULL. When the twin was the source column of a forward encryption that never ran `encrypt drop`, it still holds the plaintext from before the read switch, stale for every row updated since. The reverse flow kept those values, recorded `decrypted`, and `decrypt drop` then dropped the only current copy. The first reverse run now checks the twin before recording anything. It refuses when the twin is the forward source column and that lifecycle is not `dropped`, or when the twin already holds values, unless the operator passes --force (overwrite every row from the ciphertext) or the new --confirm-plaintext-current (keep them). The choice is recorded on the decrypt_dual_writing event. `decrypt plan` warns with the same text, and its overview marks those columns. Only the reverse lifecycle in progress passes the dual-write gate and binds the recorded pairing. An `encrypted-dropped` event followed by forward events on the twin (the column was encrypted again) starts over. The cutover guidance now says to keep writing both columns until the drop migration is applied, and --force says it is safe only while dual-writes are live. Stopping writes to the encrypted column early leaves a cleared value's old ciphertext behind, which a re-run would write back; the drop refusal now names that case. Also: - `decrypt drop` no longer removes the manifest entry when it generates the migration, since the apply-time check can still abort it. `encrypt status` shows the entry as `reversed` until the user removes it after applying. - --chunk-size is parsed strictly (no 1e3, 0x10) and capped at 32767, before any database or ZeroKMS work. - PlaintextWriteError prints verbatim; NULL_PLAINTEXT rows are reported apart from lock-context failures, with their primary keys. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`decrypt status` derived the plaintext twin name itself, without the length guard `resolveDecryptPair` has, so a column named exactly `_encrypted` showed an empty twin name in status and `_encrypted_plaintext` in plan. It now uses the shared derivePlaintextName and the same lifecycle rule for the recorded pairing, and flags a twin name taken by an EQL column (which plan and backfill refuse) as `plaintext-col-is-eql`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ocument stale twins stash-cli's Decrypt section now says to keep writing both columns until the drop migration is applied, states that --force is safe only while dual-writes are live, and documents the first-run refusal of a twin that already holds values, --confirm-plaintext-current, the chunk-size ceiling, resume after a failed run, NULL_PLAINTEXT rows, and the manifest entry the user removes after applying the drop. stash-encryption gets a pointer to it from the forward cutover (which removes dual-write code, the source of the stale twin), and stash-auth documents that bulk tooling cannot decrypt lock-context values. The CLI and migrate READMEs and the changeset follow. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The first-run refusal offers --force to overwrite a stale plaintext twin. If that pass was interrupted, a plain re-run (what every message says to do) resumed from the cursor without --force and kept the stale values in every row after it, then recorded `decrypted`. `force` is now recorded on every reverse event. Resuming a forced pass without it throws ForcedPassIncompleteError before anything is recorded, and a forced run over an unforced pass starts from the first row instead of the cursor. The engine gains a `canResume` hook for this; the forward backfill does not use it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-review of bca02b6a5..106ea9082 (five commits, no rebase). CI is green. The fixes are thorough. One new gap in the fix for blocker 1 can still lose data, so I request changes again.
Earlier blockers
- Twin that already holds data: partly resolved.
assessExistingTwin(lib/resolve-pair.ts:302-320) runs before anything is recorded and refuses both a forward-source twin and a twin with values.decrypt planwarns with the same text. The tests cover both cases. The gap is below. - Cutover guidance and "not destructive": resolved. The backfill cutover note, plan, drop's Next note, the registry help, the README and
skills/stash-cliall say to keep dual-writing until the drop is applied. No "not destructive" text remains on the decrypt path. The drop refusal now names the cleared-value case and says not to re-run the backfill for it. - CodeRabbit cast-error leak: resolved.
PlaintextWriteErrorkeeps only the SQLSTATE, the constraint, the column and the type, with nocause. The integration test checks the exception andcs_migrations.
The follow-ups from my last review (rowsTotal, error-event cursor, gate on old lifecycles, manifest removal, chunk-size bounds, NULL_PLAINTEXT report, skills, help text) are all done.
Blocking
The --force choice for a stale twin is lost when the forced pass fails before its first commit.
The hazard check runs only while no reverse lifecycle is active (resolve-pair.ts:306). The first --force run records decrypt_dual_writing (backfill.ts:209), so every later run skips the check. After that, only canResume (decrypt.ts:308) keeps the pass in force mode. But the engine calls canResume only for a checkpoint, or for an error event with a non-NULL cursor (engine.ts:155-161). A pass that fails in its first chunk records an error event with cursorValue NULL. A pass that is killed before its first commit leaves only decrypt_started. In both cases the next run is not a resume. It starts a fresh unforced pass, and no check stops it.
Example:
- The twin is the forward source column with stale values. The operator runs
decrypt backfill --force. - The credentials resolve to the wrong workspace. The first chunk throws
UndecryptableBatchError. Its message says "export the CS_* values ... and re-run" (decrypt.ts:66-72). It does not say "with--force". - The operator fixes the credentials and runs
decrypt backfill. The run fills only the NULL rows, keeps all the stale values, and recordsdecrypted. decrypt dropfinds full coverage and drops the only current copy.
A first-chunk PlaintextWriteError (the operator widens the column and re-runs) or a network error gives the same result. acknowledgedWith is written to the event, but nothing reads it.
skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:683 says "a plain re-run refuses". That is true only after at least one chunk has committed.
Fix: make the refusal depend on the recorded choice, not on the presence of a cursor. For example, while the lifecycle's decrypt_dual_writing event carries acknowledgedWith: 'force' and no forced pass has recorded decrypted, refuse a run without --force. Or call canResume (or a separate mode check) for every latest event in the running phase that carries force: true, including decrypt_started and an error with a NULL cursor. Add an integration test where the first forced chunk throws and a plain re-run follows.
Suggested follow-up PR
--confirm-plaintext-currentis documented as "First run only" (skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md, flag table), but a later run accepts it silently. Warn that it has no effect there.decrypt_dual_writing.details.acknowledgedWithis write-only. If the fix above does not read it,decrypt statuscould show it, so the operator can see which choice was made.
A forced pass that failed before its first commit left no checkpoint and no cursor. The engine only resumes from one of those, so `canResume` never ran, the next plain run started a fresh unforced pass, and the stale plaintext the forced pass was started to replace survived until the drop removed the only current copy. Mode is now decided from the history rather than from the resume point: `forceObligationOpen` reports a forced pass started and not completed, and while it is open every run is forced. That makes `ForcedPassIncompleteError` unreachable, so it is removed (it has not been released). Refs #1217
… stale twin `acknowledgedWith` was written on `decrypt_dual_writing` and read by nothing. If the run after that confirmation failed before recording `decrypt_started`, the next plain run went unforced: the CLI skips the stale-twin check once the column migration is active, and no forced pass had started to open the obligation. The acknowledgement now opens the obligation itself, so it is owed from the moment the operator chose to overwrite, and each `decrypt_dual_writing` starts the obligation afresh for a new column migration. Refs #1217
Without this, an obligation that never closed would force every later run and write older ciphertext values back over plaintext the app wrote to the plaintext column alone. Checked by inverting the closing branch, which fails this test. Refs #1217
`decrypt backfill` treated the source column of a still-open forward encryption as a twin hazard the operator could acknowledge with `--force` or `--confirm-plaintext-current`. That started a reverse migration on a pair that already had one open, which is what made "is this lifecycle the one in progress" need a join across two state keys. Only one migration may now be open on a pair of columns. The backfill refuses such a twin outright, whatever flags are passed, and `decrypt plan` warns that it will. `forward-source` is no longer a hazard kind, and `twinHazardMessage` loses the parameter it no longer branches on. Abandoning a forward encryption in progress is tracked in #1221. The skill, help text, README and changeset now describe the refusal and the forced-pass obligation from the previous commits. A forced pass matched rows on primary key only, so plaintext decrypted from ciphertext read before the bulkDecrypt round trip could overwrite a newer value the application dual-wrote in the meantime. Every write now requires the row's ciphertext to still be the one that was decrypted. The first-chunk UndecryptableBatchError no longer fires when every row decrypted to null (NULL_PLAINTEXT), which blamed the wrong credentials. forceObligationOpen reads one row in SQL instead of replaying the column's whole cs_migrations history in JS. Refs #1217
…stash When the plaintext column was dropped by an ORM migration rather than `stash encrypt drop`, its forward lifecycle stayed open and `decrypt backfill` refused forever. `decrypt plan` is the only step that can see the column missing, so it now records that forward migration as dropped, marked as observed (`--dry-run` only reports it). Also from review of #1193: - detectPkColumn resolves the table through search_path (new `primaryKeyColumns` in @cipherstash/migrate), so same-named tables in other schemas no longer read as a composite primary key. - The skipped-rows report blames credentials only for failures this run saw; skips from an earlier run are reported neutrally. - --chunk-size is parsed once, in main.ts. - One shared `progressSafe` helper replaces three copies of the missing cs_migrations check. - stash-encryption no longer promises --force / --confirm-plaintext-current get past an open forward migration; skills and changeset describe the new plan behaviour. Re-review of 106ea90..3ff6002 (six commits). CI is green. I ran decrypt.integration.test.ts at 3ff6002 against Postgres 17: all 38 tests pass.
Earlier blocker
The --force choice is lost when a forced pass fails before its first commit: resolved. forceObligationOpen reads the recorded history, not the cursor, so the next plain run is forced. The test "a plain run after a forced pass failed before its first commit still overwrites every row" covers my example. The refusal of a twin with an open forward migration also removes the forward-source path. The ciphertext guard in writeDecryptedChunk closes CodeRabbit's concurrent dual-write point.
Blocking
A forced pass over a stale twin keeps the stale value in every row it skips. Then it closes the obligation, and decrypt drop accepts the result.
CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding at decrypt.ts:373-375 (22:40Z) is still open and has no reply. I confirmed it at 3ff6002, and the same defect has two more parts:
- A
NULL_PLAINTEXTrow has the same result. The ciphertext decrypts to an empty value, and the row is skipped, so the stale value stays in the twin. - The forced pass records
decryptedwithforce: true. This closes the obligation, so no later run is forced. An unforced run selects only NULL twins, so no later run reaches these rows.
Probe: 300 rows, the twin set to 'stale@example.com', every tenth row locked, and row 1 set to envelope(null). Then run({ force: true }):
{"completed":true,"skipped":31,"codes":{"NULL_PLAINTEXT":1,"UNKNOWN":30},
"stale":"31","uncovered":"0","obligationOpen":false}
The pass completes. 31 rows keep the stale value, and zero rows match decrypt drop's coverage query (ciphertext IS NOT NULL AND plaintext IS NULL). So drop and its apply-time check both pass, and they drop the only current copy of those 31 values.
The text that the operator reads also says the opposite:
skippedReport(backfill.ts) says the skipped rows "were left with<twin>NULL" and that "stash decrypt droprefuses while any of them remain".skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:689says "leaves the twin NULL" and "decrypt droprefuses while any remain".:691says the same forNULL_PLAINTEXT. These lines ship to customers.
Fix: in a forced pass, set the twin to NULL for every row that is skipped (failed or NULL_PLAINTEXT). The existing coverage check then blocks drop, and the existing remedies apply. Use the same ciphertext guard as the write. Alternatively, do not record decrypted (and keep the obligation open) while a forced pass has skipped rows. Add an integration test with a stale twin, a locked row and a NULL_PLAINTEXT row.
Suggested follow-up PR
- CI does not run the
@cipherstash/migrateintegration suites. They skip unlessPG_TEST_URLis set, and no workflow sets it. All of the obligation tests and the concurrency test pass only on a developer machine. Add a job with a Postgres service that setsPG_TEST_URL. - The PR comment says that the tests were verified at
57b94b0.597089band3ff6002came after that. My run above covers them.
The ADR described enforcement that is not implemented yet. #1193 enforces it for the reverse direction only; the forward direction, the waiver and the obligation events arrive with #1217. Say so, and correct the event claim to what is recorded today. The head is still 3ff6002. My review of 2026-10-16 applies, and the blocker in it is still open.
A new comment from 2026-10-19 (the reply to CodeRabbit about the sampled NULL_PLAINTEXT keys) says: "Rows whose ciphertext decrypts to an empty value are left with the plaintext column NULL, and decrypt drop refuses while they hold ciphertext." That is correct for an unforced pass only. It is not correct for a --force pass over a stale twin:
- The drop check is
drop.ts:343-344:<encrypted> IS NOT NULL AND <plaintext> IS NULL. - On a stale twin the plaintext column already holds a value. A forced pass that skips a row (lock context,
NULL_PLAINTEXTor another code) does not write to it, so the stale value stays there, and the row is not NULL. - The drop check does not count that row. The forced pass records
decryptedand closes the obligation, so no later run goes back to the row. - Result:
decrypt dropremoves the ciphertext, which is the only current copy, and keeps the stale plaintext. The skipped-rows report andskills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:689,691tell the operator the opposite.
The comment also says that ciphertext IS NOT NULL AND plaintext IS NULL can include lock-context and not-yet-decrypted rows. This is the same problem from the other direction: on a forced pass, these rows do not match the predicate, so nothing stops the drop.
Possible fixes (one is sufficient):
- In a forced pass, write NULL to the plaintext column of each skipped row. The existing drop check and the
NULL_PLAINTEXTremedy then apply as they are written. - Do not close the force obligation when the forced pass skipped rows. Record the skipped keys, and make
decrypt droprefuse while any remain.
Then add an integration test: a stale twin, a forced pass with one locked row, and an assertion that decrypt drop refuses. Update the report text and the skill lines to agree with the fix.
A forced decrypt pass skipped rows that failed to decrypt or decrypted to an empty value, but left their stale plaintext in place. Those rows then did not match the drop's coverage check (ciphertext set, plaintext NULL), and the completed forced pass closed the obligation, so `decrypt drop` could destroy the only current copy. A forced pass now writes NULL to a skipped row's plaintext column, still guarded on the row's ciphertext being unchanged. Also: - Read "no cs_migrations table yet" from the SQLSTATE (42P01, 3F000) rather than the message, so a permission error on the table is no longer read as "no history". - Warn when --confirm-plaintext-current is passed on a run where it has no effect, instead of ignoring it silently. - Bring the stash-cli skill in line with both. Re-review of b56561f. The data-loss blocker from my last two reviews is fixed. One text defect in a skill that ships to customers is still open, so I request changes for that only.
Fixed: a forced pass left stale values in skipped rows
A forced pass now writes NULL to the plaintext column of each row it skips (decrypt.ts:401-404). The write keeps the ciphertext guard. The drop check (<encrypted> IS NOT NULL AND <plaintext> IS NULL) therefore counts these rows again, and decrypt drop refuses while they remain. The skipped counter is now separate from writes.length, so rowsDecrypted stays correct when the write list contains NULL writes.
What I did to verify it, at b56561f, against Postgres 17:
decrypt.integration.test.ts: 39 of 39 tests pass. This includes the new forced-pass test.- I removed the NULL write from
skip()and ran the test again. The new test failed, and the other 38 passed. The test therefore detects the defect. @cipherstash/migrate, all tests: 78 pass, and 54 are skipped (the live suites that need credentials).stashunit tests incommands/decryptandcommands/encrypt/lib: 160 of 160 pass. These include the new SQLSTATE tests forisMissingMigrationsTable.
The changes to SKILL.md:689 and the --confirm-plaintext-current row now agree with the code.
Blocking: skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:717 tells the agent to edit .cipherstash/ by hand
CodeRabbit found this already; I agree that it blocks, and I give a fix below. Line 717 says: "After applying it, remove the column's entry from that file". Line 12 of the same skill says: "don't hand-edit .cipherstash/. The CLI owns that state; hand-edits desync it." An agent in a customer repository gets two instructions that contradict each other, and no CLI command can do the removal. Because this skill ships in the stash tarball, I block on it, as for incorrect code.
Possible fixes (one is sufficient):
- Change the sentence: keep the entry, and say that
encrypt statusshows it asreversed, which is the correct final state. Do not tell the agent to edit the file. - Make
decrypt drop(or a laterdecrypt status, after it sees that the column is gone) remove the entry throughremoveManifestColumn. Then change line 717 to name that command.
Suggested follow-up PR
- CI still does not run the
@cipherstash/migrateintegration suites, because no workflow setsPG_TEST_URL. Only a local run tests the obligation, concurrency and forced-pass behaviour, including the new test. A job with a Postgres service container and no credentials would cover them.
After `decrypt drop`, the skill, the drop's next steps and `encrypt status` told the user to remove the column's entry from .cipherstash/migrations.json by hand. The same skill says the CLI owns .cipherstash/ and hand-edits desync it, and no command performs the removal. The entry now stays: `encrypt status` shows it as `reversed`, which is its final state. The last blocker is fixed
skills/stash-cli/SKILL.md:717 no longer tells the agent to edit .cipherstash/migrations.json. The entry stays, and encrypt status shows reversed as its final state. The code agrees with the skill:
decrypt dropno longer prints the instruction to remove the entry.- The
encrypt statusflag is nowreversed, notreversed (remove from migrations.json). - Both tests now assert that the output does not contain
migrations.json.
I searched languages/, skills/ and docs/, and found no other instruction to edit that file. manifestPlaintextFor is still used by resolve-pair.ts and decrypt/status.ts, so removing its import from drop.ts leaves no dead export.
The remediation point from CodeRabbit is now documented in the --force warning, the skipped-rows report, the TSDoc and SKILL.md:689: do per-user remediation only after the last forced pass completes. This agrees with the behaviour of b56561f.
What I checked
stashunit tests incommands/decryptandcommands/encrypt: 186 of 186 pass.- Biome on the changed CLI and migrate sources: no errors.
- CI: all checks pass.
decrypt.tschanged in its comments only, so my Postgres 17 integration run atb56561f(39 of 39, with the mutation check) still applies.
Suggested follow-up PR
- CI still does not run the
@cipherstash/migrateintegration suites, because no workflow setsPG_TEST_URL(see my previous review).

The issue asks plan to add the twins, so with--tableit generates them; with no flags it is the read-only overviewencrypt planis. For Drizzle it prints the schema lines (email: text('email'),,bigint(…, { mode: 'bigint' }),timestamp(…, { withTimezone: true })) fordrizzle-kit generateand writes no file, on purpose: a--customADD COLUMN never reaches drizzle-kit's snapshot, so the nextgeneratewould emit it again and fail with "column already exists" (the trap theeql repairdocs describe). Elsewhere it writes a reviewedADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTSmigration through the same writerencrypt dropuses; Prisma Next gets the contract change to make.Shared code, not a second implementation. The forward keyset loop is extracted into
runChunkedMigrationin@cipherstash/migrate;runBackfillnow runs on it with identical SQL, events and event details (the existing forward integration suite passes unchanged), andrunDecryptBackfillruns on it too. Batch sizing, cursoring, checkpoint-in-the-same-transaction, resume after interruption, signal handling and thetarget IS NULLidempotency guard are therefore literally the same code. The keyset page and pending-count queries are one function with source and target swapped. In the CLI, the migration-file writer, table renderer and PK detection moved toencrypt/liband are used by both families.State. Reverse events (
decrypt_dual_writing,decrypt_started,decrypt_checkpoint,decrypted,encrypted_dropped; phasesdecrypt-dual-writing → decrypting → decrypted → encrypted-dropped) are recorded incs_migrationsagainst the encrypted column, so they never share a timeline or a resume cursor with the forward history under the plaintext name. Every reverse event carriesdetails.plaintextColumn, which is howdecrypt dropknows which column the backfill actually filled.Existing plaintext and forced passes. The backfill only fills rows where the twin is NULL, so values already in the twin would survive, the column would be marked
decrypted, anddecrypt dropwould remove the only current copy. Two rules close that:dropped, decrypt backfillrefuses whatever flags are passed, anddecrypt planwarns that it will. Only one migration may be open on a pair of columns. Abandoning a forward encryption in progress is a separate operation, tracked instash encrypt: no way to abandon a column migration that is still in progress #1221.--force(overwrite) or--confirm-plaintext-current(keep). The choice is recorded ondecrypt_dual_writing.A forced pass is an obligation on the migration, not an option on one run. It opens when
--forceis chosen for a stale twin, or when any forced pass starts, and it closes only when a forced pass completes. While it is open, runDecryptBackfillforces every run, whatever the caller passes. The rule lives in@cipherstash/migrate, not the CLI, so workers that call it directly get it too, and an interrupted overwrite is always finished as one, even if it failed before its first commit.Dual-writes last until the drop is applied. errorevent records the last committed cursor, so fixing the cause and re-running does not start from the first row. A failed chunk write throwsPlaintextWriteError, which carries the SQLSTATE, column and type but never the database's message. Postgres puts the offending input in cast errors, and here that input is decrypted plaintext, which would otherwise be stored in theerrorevent.Batches and ZeroKMS. Each chunk is one
bulkDecryptcall, so one ZeroKMS request; default 500 rows (--chunk-size).bulkDecrypt(notbulkDecryptModels) because it reports failures per row instead of failing the batch.Lock contexts: documented limitation, no bypass. A value encrypted with an end-user lock context can only be decrypted as that user. With workspace credentials it fails on its own row; the backfill skips it, counts it (per error code), leaves the twin NULL, and reports it in the backfill output, in
cs_migrationsand indecrypt status(UNDECRYPTABLEcolumn). Because those rows still have ciphertext and no plaintext, decrypt droprefuses while any remain, and says why. The remedy (decrypt those rows in the application on each user's behalf, then re-run) is in the output and docs. No admin bypass was added. If the first chunk of a run decrypts nothing, the command stops before writing anything: that is almost always credentials for the wrong workspace/keyset, and carrying on would spend a ZeroKMS request per chunk across the whole table to decrypt nothing.--continue-on-undecryptableopts out for the genuine case.Proxy-only deployments. _eq/_ord/_searchonly add query terms):text*→text;integer*,smallint*,bigint*,numeric*,real*→ same;double*→double precision;boolean→boolean;date*→date;timestamp*→timestamptz(EQL's catalog says the family encrypts a UTC instant);jsonandjson_search(searchable JSON) →jsonb.json_entry(a SteVec element, never a column type) and unknown domains returnnulland are refused rather than guessed. A unit test parses the shipped@cipherstash/eqlinstall bundle and asserts everypublic.eql_v3_*column domain maps. The backfill casts each value to the twin's declared type (format_type), so a hand-chosenvarchar(255)works too. Note: the forwardencrypt plandoes not do type mapping (it only diffs the manifest), so this mapping is new rather than an inversion of existing code; it mirrorseql-domains.Indexes.
decrypt droplists every index that depends on the encrypted column viapg_depend(so EQL functional indexes likeeql_v3.eq_term(col)are found, not just plain column indexes), drops them explicitly inside the migration, and names them in the output.Drop safety. Gated on the
decryptedphase, on the RECORDED pairing (a different, fully populated column would make the coverage check pass vacuously, the #772 failure mode in reverse), and on live coverage. The generated migration re-checks coverage at apply time underACCESS EXCLUSIVE, inside oneDOblock with every DDL viaEXECUTE, so a failed check drops nothing even under plainpsql -f. Generating the drop does not edit.cipherstash/migrations.json: the file has not run yet, and its apply-time check can still abort it. Meanwhileencrypt statusshows the entry asreversedinstead of as drift, and the drop's closing note tells the user to remove the entry once the migration is applied.--uninstall-eql. Allowed only when this is the last EQL v3 column in the whole database, checked when generating and again at apply time (the uninstall cascades). It runs@cipherstash/eql's own uninstall script, then drops thepublic.eql_v3_*column domains, which that script deliberately leaves behind (they live outside the disposable schemas so upgrades never touch columns).cipherstash.cs_migrationsis kept as the audit trail.Test evidence
