Saved runs were difficult to explore, and scripts lacked a consistent way to select, export, or publish existing measurements. This change makes the offline workflow useful from both the CLI and the terminal cockpit.

Changes

  • Add shared scope, backend, and exact server filters to history, statistics, and insights. HTTP endpoint identity preserves case-sensitive paths and queries.
  • Export all selected history atomically as JSON, JSONL, or CSV without changing canonical schemas.
  • Add offline speedtest metrics conversion from history, a JSON file, or stdin, with Prometheus units, escaped labels, optional-value omission, and a freshness guard.
  • Add cockpit history search, scope/path filtering, eight sort modes, reset, and a selected-run preview. Opening, pinning, comparing, and reloading preserve the actual record identity.
  • Add six selectable statistics metrics and scope/path controls, with correct units, sample counts, and missing-data handling.
  • Translate new controls across all eight languages and retain the most recent five monitor failures.
  • Add behavioral regressions, real-terminal explorer checks, usage documentation, and reproducible before/after captures.

Visual evidence

Actual Ratatui output with deterministic synthetic fixtures; these are not WAN measurements.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check — passed.
  • cargo clippy --locked --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings — passed.
  • cargo test --locked --all-features — 290 tests passed after the review fixes, including all 60 cockpit tests.
  • cargo build --locked --bin speedtest — passed.
  • CLI, cockpit, and eight-language localization Python smoke suites — passed with the built candidate using temporary data, loopback servers, and Unix PTYs. Inherited HTTP(S)/ALL proxy variables were removed for these local fixtures because the locked proxy matcher does not exempt IP literals with NO_PROXY=*.
  • Independent CLI/storage and cockpit reviews completed; reported defects were fixed and rechecked.
  • No dependency, lockfile, canonical data schema, or release-version changes.

Public endpoint availability, WAN accuracy, privileged DNS writes, and Windows console restoration were not exercised locally. GitHub CI provides the existing Linux, Windows, Apple Silicon macOS, and Intel macOS checks.

Review follow-up

Both CodeRabbit findings are fixed in 83f78c0.

  • New Unix metrics files request normal creation permissions and respect umask; existing permissions and private JSON/CSV/history defaults are preserved. Subprocess tests cover masks 022, 027, and 077 plus replacement and export permissions.
  • Statistics comparisons refresh on successful reload within the captured scope/path. Explicit History/pinned snapshots stay stable; failed reloads retain evidence; fewer than two matching runs cannot fall back to another population. Two regression tests cover these cases.
  • Final local formatting, Clippy, all 290 Rust tests, and CLI build pass.

Final GitHub verification

The final head 83f78c0fb13919af634f91237d5f8401a8f681a4 passes the four-platform CI matrix, all four release builds and packaging checks, and the push CI run. CodeRabbit reports Review completed with a successful status. Both actionable review threads are resolved; no unresolved review threads remain.

The follow-up review's optional parent-directory fsync suggestion is deferred. That power-loss durability behavior predates this PR; adding a fallible operation after rename would change error semantics and needs separate filesystem compatibility work. Atomic replacement and existing export guarantees remain the scope here.

Landing result

Merged with a merge commit at 5772d78921504a77eefb5440e87fc5df7c342d63, preserving author history. The authorized head was 83f78c0fb13919af634f91237d5f8401a8f681a4. Guarded readiness and landing evidence confirms green checks and no unresolved review threads before each merge. Authorization: the user's explicit “merge and create a release” request. Main's resulting tree matches the tested v0.9.0 source. Release publication runs in workflow 38150989084.

Add consistent history filters, atomic batch exports, and Prometheus textfile conversion. Expand the terminal cockpit with searchable, sortable history and metric/path controls, preserving record identity and missing evidence.

Translate new controls across eight locales, correct recent monitor failure retention, and add regression tests and reproducible visual evidence.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds shared filters and export formats for saved history, an offline Prometheus metrics command, and cockpit controls for history and statistics. It also updates monitor failure-message retention and adds related documentation, translations, tests, and screenshot-rendering support.

Changes

Saved history and cockpit

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared history selection
src/cli.rs, src/history.rs, src/insights/mod.rs, src/bin/speedtest.rs, tests/cli_contract.rs, docs/usage.md
History, statistics, and insights use shared scope, backend, and server filters. Server identity matching normalizes URL scheme and host while preserving path and query case.
History export
src/cli.rs, src/bin/speedtest.rs, src/storage/mod.rs, tests/cli_contract.rs, README.md, docs/usage.md
History can be exported as JSON, JSONL, or CSV. Export functions validate results and write files atomically.
Prometheus metrics export
src/cli.rs, src/bin/speedtest.rs, src/metrics.rs, src/storage/mod.rs, tests/cli_contract.rs, src/lib.rs, README.md, docs/usage.md, src/i18n/locales/*
The metrics command reads a saved result, file, or standard input. It can check result age, render Prometheus metrics, and write output to a file or standard output.
History explorer
src/tui/cockpit/services.rs, src/tui/cockpit/state.rs, src/tui/cockpit/view.rs, src/tui/cockpit/tests.rs, .github/scripts/cockpit_smoke.py, docs/network-cockpit.md, docs/images/explorer/*, README.md, src/i18n/locales/*
The cockpit adds history search, scope and path filters, sorting, and reset controls. Visible-row selection maps to archive records when opening runs or comparing them. The added renderer converts captured terminal frames to PNG images.
Statistics view and guidance
src/tui/cockpit/state.rs, src/tui/cockpit/view.rs, src/tui/cockpit/tests.rs, src/i18n/locales/*, docs/network-cockpit.md, docs/usage.md, README.md, .github/scripts/cockpit_smoke.py
Statistics can filter by metric, scope, and saved path. Charts and summaries use available values for the selected metric.
Recent monitor failures
src/monitor.rs
The monitor summary retains the latest five failure messages while continuing to report failure counts and streaks.

Monitor failure summaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recent failure messages
src/monitor.rs
After five failure messages, each new message replaces the oldest. The test checks eight failures followed by a success.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 83f78

The change is mergeable after normal checks. Directory syncing remains optional crash-durability hardening, not a blocker for these exports.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 83f78

The new workflows transform local measurements rather than introduce a network service or privileged operation. Metrics intentionally support broader file readability, so exposure depends on the selected directory, permissions, and separately configured collection. Those deployment conditions were not verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reachable output scope is a caller-selected local destination under the invoking process's filesystem authority. Metrics contain measurement values and backend/server labels; downstream collection can broaden their audience, but that requires external configuration not supplied here.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The CLI validates canonical measurements, rejects non-finite converted metrics, and escapes label controls before publication. The public write_metrics function itself accepts raw text and performs no rendering or freshness validation, so these are CLI/renderer guarantees rather than guarantees of every library write.
  • observed — New cockpit history operations remain archive navigation and local reload effects. Measurement and diagnostic execution remain separate explicit effects, rather than being reached by filtering, sorting, opening, or pinning saved records.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If canonical endpoint URLs contain credentials or sensitive query values, consider a separate redacted or stable metrics label before wider collection. Rendering currently escapes the full server.host value rather than redacting it; no actual secret-bearing result or downstream disclosure was established.

Create new metrics textfiles with normal Unix permissions restricted by umask while preserving existing modes and private history export defaults.

Refresh Statistics-derived comparison pairs after successful history reload within the captured scope and path. Preserve explicit History snapshots and missing-pair suppression.

Add regression coverage for both findings from PR #23.

193-205: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Directory fsync is missing after the atomic rename.

atomic_write_with_permissions syncs the temporary file before persist. It does not sync the parent directory after the rename. After a power loss, the rename can be lost even though the file content is durable. This affects history exports and metrics textfiles.

Open parent read-only and call sync_all() after persist on Unix. This is a recommended hardening step. It does not block the permission fix in this change.

Based on learnings: atomic persistence on POSIX should fsync the containing directory after the rename.
