fix(analytics): deterministic order for tied Hash Stats adopters (#256) - #261
Conversation
#256) Analytics lists built by ranging over a map and sorted on one key put entries with equal values in a different order on each recompute, and in lists capped at N it was random which tied entries made the cut. Each new test computes a list 50 times and requires one fully specified order: Hash Stats adopters (multiByteNodes) and topHops; channels, topSenders and channelTimeline; RF payloadTypes and snrByType; topology topRepeaters, topPairs, observers, perObserverReach rings, multiObsNodes and bestPathList; distance topHops (dedupeHopsByPair); subpaths (rankSubpaths). All 15 assertions are red on master (30 of 30 runs). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
computeAnalyticsHashSizes sorted multiByteNodes on packets only, so the
Hash Stats adopters table's default ("server order") reshuffled tied rows
on every analytics recompute, which made the #226 E2E flaky. Sort by
packets descending, then pubkey ascending.
The same map-iteration tie problem existed in the other analytics lists
the frontend shows in server order or caps at N; each now breaks ties on
its unique key (hop, pair, channel hash, sender, payload type, type name,
observer id, path). The topology observers list had no sort at all and its
first entry is the default observer tab; it is now ordered by id. Among
observers tied on minDist, bestPathList now reports the lowest observer id.
Only the order of equal values changes. The sorts stay O(n log n) and run
in the cached analytics recompute, not per request.

Each list below is built by ranging over a map and was sorted on one key (or not sorted). Each now breaks ties on its unique key. Each has its own assertion in the new test file, red on master in 30 of 30 runs and green with the fix [T].

Extra mutants: M3 bestPath observer tie-break removed → caught by bestPathList hop@observer; M4 observers sort removed → caught by observers id; M5 subpath tie-break reversed → caught by subpaths path [T]. Each mutant was caught by its own assertion only.
Two items go slightly beyond "order of equal values", both called out in the PR: observers had no sort (all entries tied), and the observer named in bestPathList for a hop was whichever minDist-tied observer the map produced last [K].
Checked, not changed [K]:
- Already have a full tie-breaker:
role_analytics.goroles,relay_airtime_share.go,reach_rank.go,network_digest.goareas, the area analytics indb.go(4313/4425/4500/4564),rx_dashboard.go,ping_scores.go. - Sorted on a unique key: topology
hopDist,hopsVsSnr,rings; hash-sizeshourly; RF hour keys. - Built from a slice, not a map (
sort.Sliceis deterministic for the same input): distancetopPaths. - Order not used by the frontend: hop-depth
unscopedByRepeater(lookup by pubkey only);multiByteCapability(lookup by pubkey; sorted by status then lower-case name). - Ordered in SQL, not built from a map: wardriving stats.
Requirement 3 — E2E
test-issue-226-hash-stats-sort-e2e.js is unchanged. The server order is now fully determined by the data. The fixture does not change during the run, so the order read once from the API equals every later page load. Taking the order from the same response would hide tied rows reshuffling between visits, the UX side of #256. Local run: 10 of 10 green (15 of 15 steps each) against the fixed server on e2e-fixture.db, prepared as in CI: freshen, the inline seed SQL from deploy.yml, corescope-migrate, seeds 2073 and 199. Stopped by port [T].

The rerun deviates from the brief, which allows a rerun only for #250 and #256. Attempt 1 failed on the package timeout, not on a test. The server suite takes 1023–1182 s in the last green runs (13:14–13:26 UTC) against the 1200 s limit, and several PR runs were in progress at the same time. The new tests add about 0.05 s. I reran once and stopped there.

That is a value, not an order, so it is out of scope here.multiByteCapabilitysorts by status, then lower-case name. Nodes with the same name and status keep map order. The frontend uses it only as a lookup by pubkey.- Non-analytics lists sorted on one key (node analytics
observerCoverage/peerInteractions,gps_sanity,neighbor_api,clock_skew) were not part of this change.

The Hash Stats adopters table opens in the server's order, and the server sorted
multiByteNodesonpacketsonly.byNodeis a map, Go map iteration order is random andsort.Sliceis not stable, so tied adopters came out in a different order on each analytics recompute. On the E2E fixture 20 of the 21 adopters tie onpackets = 1.test-issue-226-hash-stats-sort-e2e.jsreads the order from the API once and compares later page loads with it, so it failed whenever a recompute happened in between (#252 run 37293748200).Plan

cmd/server/store.go)Each list keeps its primary key and gets its unique key as the tie-breaker. Only the order of equal values changes.

Two lists are the edge of "order of equal values":
observershad no sort at all, so every entry was a tie; and the observer named for a hop inbestPathListwas whichever tied observer the map produced last. Both are now deterministic.Rules
cmd/serverstays read-only. Only sort comparators changed, plus oneifcondition inbestPath.map[string]interface{}: 212 instore.gobefore and after, and 710 in non-testcmd/serverbefore and after. The new test file type-asserts the existing return values (test assertions, exempt)..github/is untouched: the fork guards are still 9 indeploy.yml(8if:and the header comment) and 1 inrelease-fast-path.yml.Performance
Each sort was O(n log n) and still is; the tie-breaker is one extra string or int compare only when the primary keys are equal. One
sort.Sliceis added for the topologyobserverslist, which has one entry per observer (31 on the E2E fixture). All of it runs in the cached analytics recompute (default every 5 minutes), not per request.E2E: unchanged
The server order is now fully determined by the data, and the fixture does not change during the E2E run, so the order read once from the API equals the order of every later page load. If the test took the expected order from the same response the page rendered, it would no longer notice tied rows reshuffling between visits, which is the UX bug in #256. The Go tests pin the order directly.
Tests
cmd/server/analytics_tie_order_256_test.go(new): 7 tests and 15 list assertions, each computed 50 times against an expected order.
