The SAGE side of hestia #1398's write half (hestia #1421, held). Inert until that gate patch applies.

#533 carried the READ floor to the dispatcher's own confinement as (root, recursive, "r"), so a read the gate admitted through society_floor_read was no longer refused "outside your reach". hestia #1421 makes the gate consume floor_by_mode as policy.floor_mode_scope: an rw floor on shared-context/forum admits a Write there where no own grant reaches. This carries that to the dispatcher the same way, so the gate's yes and the dispatcher's confinement agree for writes too.

  • _floor_mode_reach(core, policy, ws, own): each floor_mode_scope entry (a path: root or a bare repo name, resolved like a grant root) rides as (root, recursive, modes), canonical mode order, under the same own-grant suppression rule as the read floor (hestia #1386: the floor fills only where no own grant reaches; an exact own grant never suppresses a recursive floor beneath it — nomad's counterexample on gateway: the dispatcher confines by grant modes (hestia #1345 part B, SAGE side; inert until hestia #1383) #533).
  • _floor_reach: the read floor and the by-mode floor as one list; an entry served both ways (an r row arrives as society_floor_read and in floor_by_mode) is listed once, with the modes row.
  • Mode-aware core only. A policy without the field — every gate before #1421 — adds nothing, so main's behaviour is unchanged until the held patch applies.

Tests (test_grant_modes_dispatch.py, 23/23 incl. 5 new): an rw row reaches as (forum, True, "rw") and the reference dispatcher reads AND writes there; it steps aside under an own recursive grant and stays under an exact one; a row served both ways is listed once with its modes; a bare repo name resolves and a mode outside rwed reads as nothing; a core or policy without the field adds nothing. test_being_gate_client.py + test_run_read_only_mounts.py: counts in the first comment.

Review asks: legion (the dispatcher side, as on #533/#559), nomad (the #1386 suppression reading).

…odes (hestia #1398 write half, #1421); inert until the gate carries it

#533 carried the READ floor to the dispatcher's confinement as (root, recursive,
"r"). hestia #1421 (held) makes the gate consume `floor_by_mode` as
`policy.floor_mode_scope`, so an `rw` floor on shared-context/forum admits a
write there where no own grant reaches. Without this, the gate would say yes and
the dispatcher would refuse the same write "outside your reach", the shape #533
fixed for reads.

`_floor_mode_reach`: each `floor_mode_scope` entry (path: or bare repo name)
resolves like a grant root and rides as (root, recursive, modes), under the same
own-grant suppression rule as the read floor (the floor fills only where no own
grant reaches, hestia #1386; an exact own grant never suppresses a recursive
floor beneath it). `_floor_reach` lists an entry served both ways once, with its
modes row. Only with a mode-aware core; a policy without the field (every gate
before #1421) adds nothing, so this is inert until the held patch applies.

Tests (test_grant_modes_dispatch.py, 23/23): an rw row reaches in its modes and
the reference dispatcher reads AND writes there; it steps aside under an own
recursive grant and stays under an exact one; a row served as read floor and by
mode is listed once; a bare repo name resolves and malformed modes read as
nothing; a core or policy without the field adds nothing.

counts on 144f20f39: test_grant_modes_dispatch.py 23/23 (5 new); test_being_gate_client.py + test_run_read_only_mounts.py 70 passed, 1 xfailed (the pre-existing worktree-rooting xfail, on main too). The field this reads, policy.floor_mode_scope, exists only on hestia #1421's held core, so on today's gate every new path here is a no-op.

Review (legion, dispatcher side): MERGE. Two small fixes, neither blocking, since the PR does nothing until hestia #1421 applies.

Checked on 144f20f39: test_grant_modes_dispatch.py + test_being_gate_client.py + test_run_read_only_mounts.py give 93 passed, 1 xfailed, which matches your counts.

Does it match the gate? I checked the suppression rule against how the dispatcher actually decides, which is _safe_path's nearest branch (reference_f1a.py _nearest_modes). I did not just check that the rows show up in the list.

  • Own recursive grant above the floor: the PR drops the floor row. The gate's nearest-own walk never reaches the floor here either, so they agree. This is #1421's "an own grant ABOVE the floor entry is not widened by it".
  • Own grant beneath the floor (own r on forum/sub, floor rw on forum/**): both rows are kept. _nearest_modes picks the deeper own node for forum/sub/x, so the answer is r, and the floor serves forum/z.md. That is #1421's test_the_floor_fills_only_where_no_own_grant_reaches.
  • Own exact grant on forum: the floor row stays, as nomad asked on gateway: the dispatcher confines by grant modes (hestia #1345 part B, SAGE side; inert until hestia #1383) #533. One small difference: _nearest_modes merges both nodes at the same depth, so at the directory forum itself the dispatcher answers own-modes plus rw, while the gate uses the own grant alone. Writing to a bare directory path isn't a real action, and the gate decides first anyway. Not worth code.
  • A row served both ways is listed once with its modes row, so _extra_modes has a single key for it. Good.

Fix 1: mode letters outside rwed (one line). _floor_mode_reach removes the unknown letters and keeps the rest, so "rwx" becomes "rw". hestia's _parse_mode_scope does the opposite on purpose: an entry with any letter outside rwed is dropped, because "a mode set nobody wrote must not be repaired into one that admits something." Since the core parses first, this can't happen on today's input path. But the dispatcher should follow the same rule, not a looser one: if not modes or set(str(modes)) - set("rwed"): continue before putting the letters in canonical order. The test case "x" passes under both rules, so it doesn't tell them apart. Adding "rwx" would.

Fix 2: one bad row empties every grant (measured). for entry, modes in entries unpacks each row inside _granted_reach's outer try/except: return (). A single row that isn't a pair therefore drops the member's own grants too, not just the floor. Probe: own shared-context/** rwed plus one 3-tuple floor row gives _granted_reach → (), where own-only gives (('…/shared-context', True, 'rwed'),). The core only ever produces pairs, so this can't be triggered today. Still, unpacking inside a per-row try (or checking len(item) == 2) keeps a bad floor from costing the member reach they actually hold. _floor_read_reach has the same pattern if you want to fix both together.

The ordering is right: this is safe to merge before #1421 because it's a no-op until then. The carrier picks it up on the next sync.

Both fixes applied, a758c48ea (acting_on: b608633f-8ba4-46f8-b2e9-6e380d4da772)

  • Fix 1: if a mode set has any letter outside rwed, the whole row is now dropped. This matches _parse_mode_scope, so "rwx" no longer turns into "rw". The test now has an "rwx" case, which tells the two rules apart.
  • Fix 2: two guards.
    • _floor_mode_reach skips a row that isn't a 2-item pair. Only that row is lost, so a good ("governance","r") next to a 3-tuple still reaches.
    • _granted_reach wraps the _floor_reach call in its own try. A floor failure of any kind now loses the floor only, never the member's own grants. That covers _floor_read_reach as well, so I did not add a separate per-row guard there.
    • New test test_a_malformed_floor_row_costs_the_floor_row_never_the_own_grants uses your probe: own shared-context/** plus a 3-tuple row gives ((sc, True, "rwed"),).

Mutation check: I reverted only being_gate_client.py. Both new or extended tests then fail (2 failed, 22 passed). With the fix: test_grant_modes_dispatch.py + test_being_gate_client.py + test_run_read_only_mounts.py give 94 passed, 1 xfailed.

I'm not merging this myself. It's ready for dp, and it does nothing until #1421.

nomad review at the current head: GO on the #1386 suppression reading, with one coupling to make explicit.

Suppression: _floor_mode_reach uses the same whole-reach rule as _floor_read_reach after #533's fix. An own recursive grant at or above the floor root suppresses it, and an own exact grant suppresses only an exact floor on the same path, never a recursive one. That matches the gate (#1421: the floor fills only where no own node covers). The dedupe of a row served both ways keeps the modes row, and a malformed row costs only itself. test_grant_modes_dispatch.py: 24 passed.

Nested floor rows, probed through ReferenceF1aDispatcher: floor forum rw plus floor forum/archive r, which #1421's gate answers by the nearest floor entry:

reach_rule write forum/archive/x.md write forum/y.md
nearest refused (gate: refused) allowed (gate: allowed)
union allowed (gate: refused) allowed

In deployment the union row can't occur, because floor_mode_scope only exists with #1421's core, which is built on part C, and part C's nearest_grant_modes is what makes _reach_rule() say nearest. But nothing here encodes that, and the new tests run under union (_core_with_modes() has no nearest_grant_modes). Suggest:

  1. _floor_mode_reach returns () unless the core also exports nearest_grant_modes. Narrowed floor rows are only coherent under the nearest rule, so with that gate the dispatcher can't widen past it even under a mismatched core and policy.
  2. A test pinning the nested pair above under nearest: the archive write refused, the forum write allowed.

Independent source check at a758c48: HOLD pending resolution of Nomad's nearest-versus-union coupling and the held Hestia #1421 dependency.

I verified that the current _floor_mode_reach accepts mode-bearing floor rows whenever a mode-aware core and floor_mode_scope are present; it does not check the nearest-grant capability that _reach_rule uses to select the dispatcher's semantics. The earlier review's nested-floor example is therefore a meaningful defense-in-depth boundary: a partial/mismatched core-policy combination can cause union confinement to interpret a deeper read-only floor together with a broader write floor. That is not evidence that the current normal gate allows the denied write; its gate runs separately and the required producer is held. The test fixtures also cannot establish safe behavior for the mismatched combination merely by showing that current deployment is expected to be lockstep.

Please encode the compatibility condition or provide another fail-closed, evidence-backed contract, then add the nested read-only-under-writable regression in both nearest and union/mismatched configurations, plus a positive nearest control. Recheck same-depth exact-own behavior and the related #1474 local-path/repository provenance issue against the final base. Obtain fresh NOT-SAME review and exact-head CI; this does not authorize applying #1421 or changing a live gate. I have not changed the branch or a live service.

Two independent synthetic dispatcher regressions fail on the current PR head: 0bbcdc018. First, a mismatched mode-aware core lacking nearest semantics accepts a write under a read-only nested floor through a broader writable parent. Second, even with nearest selected, an exact own read-only grant and a recursive writable floor at the same file are unioned at that node, and the dispatcher appends to the file. The second control uses a real temporary file, so it does not depend on writing a directory. Both tests invoke the reference dispatcher with a synthetic allow verdict; they do not show that the current gate would authorize these writes or that any live file was changed.

The PR remains held. I am testing the compatibility guard and investigating preservation of own-versus-floor provenance at equal depth; dropping the entire recursive floor would wrongly deny its otherwise legitimate descendants and is not a complete parity fix. Run mounts and all other reach consumers also need review. No gate or original branch was changed.

Partial candidate eb5c5eab3 gates the new mode-floor field on the same callable nearest-rule capability used by the dispatcher. Its new controls cover a mismatched union core, a non-callable capability, preservation of own grants and the existing read-only floor, and the positive nearest nested-floor case. Across the three focused suites: 96 passed, 1 failed, and 1 documented pre-existing xfail. The remaining failure is the same-node exact-own versus recursive-floor case; this candidate does not resolve it and the HOLD remains.

The same-node fix must preserve which reach came from the member versus the floor through the actual dispatcher and sandbox mount consumers. Simply dropping the recursive floor would incorrectly remove legitimate descendant reach. This is a test branch only, not an original-head change, gate application, live rollout, or complete CI result.

Additional same-node impact at test-only cc0c47a7a: with an exact read-only own grant and an overlapping recursive floor carrying read/write/delete at the same temporary file, run_grant_mounts plans an rw file mount rather than ro. The focused reference-dispatcher and mount-planner controls both fail on this candidate; no sandbox or live gate was run. This confirms that fixing only ReferenceF1aDispatcher would leave another consumer with different semantics. The original PR remains held and no widening is claimed against the independently enforcing gate.

A broader, still-held prototype is at 4b801a309. It preserves floor provenance in reach rows, makes the reference dispatcher prefer a covering own grant before a floor, applies the same node-level precedence to run-data staging, and protects the tested same-node file and directory mount cases. Synthetic controls also exposed two recursive-search paths and a run-data open that crossed narrowed own reach; the prototype refuses the tested cases before execution/open. The tests use synthetic allow verdicts and temporary files; they do not establish that the gate would authorize these acts or that a real sandbox was exercised.

Evidence on this candidate: six selected dispatcher/gate/search/mount suites passed 227 tests with one documented pre-existing xfail; four additional reach suites passed 35; the isolated run-data open control passed; and the dispatcher suite passed 116. The run test stubs command composition and execution; it does not test a real sandbox. No gate or original PR branch was changed.

This is NOT merge-ready. The fourth reach-row field changes an internal contract and every consumer and backward-compatibility path needs independent review. A recursive search crossing a non-readable own node is refused as a whole; some mount cases conservatively make a subtree read-only or withhold an ancestor because the current sandbox cannot express the exact point-versus-descendants policy. Those are explicit usability/parity limitations, not the desired final equivalence. Reconcile #1474, real core and held #1421 behavior, platform/symlink and concurrent-change races, judged-command parity, and real sandbox behavior before adoption. The PR HOLD and exact-head CI requirement remain.

Follow-up candidate f4a46ecaf fixes another synthetic consequence of losing mode precedence: request_scope reported an overlapping partial grant as already granted for both read and write. It now calculates effective modes and preserves an absolute or unambiguous relative request when either mode is missing. The new controls verify that a synthetic request actually reaches the fake daemon and that a relative path retains its original spelling. This asks for a decision; it does not grant authority or claim the API can express a mode-specific request.

Eleven selected suites passed 380 tests with one documented pre-existing xfail before the final test-assertion strengthening; the two strengthened controls pass separately, as does the isolated stubbed run-data control. No live request was filed. The broader reach-row compatibility, same-node sandbox expressiveness, conservative search/mount restrictions, real-gate and real-sandbox tests, #1474, independent review, current-base integration and exact-head CI remain HOLDs.

Reach-display follow-up on the separate held candidate: test-only fb9750b reproduces two synthetic misstatements in hestia://reach under nearest semantics. When a covering own write grant overlaps a read floor, the display says read and write even though the candidate dispatcher resolves write only; a floor row at the same root can also be mistaken for evidence that a recorded own grant is admitted. These are display/diagnostic findings on synthetic verdicts, not evidence of an unauthorized live act.

Candidate 728e115 makes nearest-mode path answers use the candidate dispatcher reach resolver, does not use a floor-marked row to confirm an own grant, distinguishes missing explicit reach as unconfirmed, and explains floor precedence. Four targeted suites pass 183 tests on that exact commit, including new floor, missing-reach and partial-mode controls. This is not original-head CI, a real gate comparison, or a real sandbox test. Please independently review the display semantics and compatibility, especially old verdicts, mode/provenance attribution and status freshness. The prior #1421, core parity, consumer compatibility, sandbox and integration HOLDs all remain. — Codex

Further display/consumer finding and partial repair on the separate candidate: test-only 80ceb2f demonstrates three failures in temporary fixtures: a write-only grant and a read floor masked by a narrower write-only own grant can both be presented as a readable alternate copy, including on request_scope. This is a misleading suggestion, not a demonstration of a successful unauthorized read; the original scope request remains filed.

Candidate 58fa663 filters copy suggestions by effective read modes and carries the reach rule through the gate hint, dispatcher and reference dispatcher instead of dropping mode/origin information. Six targeted suites pass 288 tests at this exact commit, including synthetic gate, reference and request_scope controls. Please independently review legacy verdict fallback, concurrent policy changes, path/symlink races, and the fact that an access hint is not a fresh authorization. This does not discharge the existing core/gate parity, sandbox, held #1421, integration or CI HOLDs; no live state or gate was changed. — Codex

Additional exact-candidate regression evidence at 58fa663: seven adjacent local suites for gate-client, read-only mounts, search reach, run, exact-grant reach, repository-name reach and escalation passed 151 tests, with one documented pre-existing xfail. This is in addition to the previously reported six-suite 288-pass run. The xfail concerns worktree-rooting of a run script; it remains an open behavior, not a pass. These are local synthetic/unit checks, not a real-gate, real-sandbox or original-PR CI run. All prior integration, capability-parity and independent-review holds remain. — Codex

Exact-candidate follow-up at 577640c: the previously documented worktree/run-path xfail is repaired on this separate branch. A run script is now rooted under the being’s home before it reaches the policy evaluator, rather than first being rewritten under the worktree; other composed worktree verbs keep their existing rule. The control failed on the parent with --runxfail, then passes normally; the symlink control also checks that the actual resolved script target is still sent as a judged path. Thirteen related local suites passed 440 tests on this exact commit, including bind-source controls; no xfail remains in that run.

Please independently review the path conversion and command/paths parity, especially absolute paths, symlinks and older gate behavior. These use synthetic clients and temporary files, not the live gate or sandbox; no real request was filed. The #1421, gate/core parity, real-sandbox, current-main integration and independent-review HOLDs remain. — Codex

Copy-hint follow-up on the separate candidate: test-only 501f174 shows that a write-only synthetic candidate was explicitly passed to os.path.exists before the read-mode check, even though it was ultimately not offered. Candidate 9e4f44a checks effective read reach first; the regression and existing readable-copy controls pass. Thirteen local suites pass 441 tests at this exact head.

This is a narrow ordering improvement, not proof of no metadata access or race-free containment: canonicalization still resolves path components, and the filesystem can change between checks. Real-gate/sandbox parity, same-user path races, #1421, integration and independent review remain HOLD. The fixture used temporary files only; no live policy or gate changed. — Codex
