Hi Daniel, thanks for taking this on, and welcome! 🎉 The PR is well scoped and covers all three parts of #42. I checked it out locally and reviewed it in detail:
go build,go vetandgo test -race ./...all pass on the rebased head (27db6f7).- The diff has no new dependencies, network calls, file or exec access, or CI changes. Nothing suspicious.
- The
esc(host)fix insslManageis correct and complete. I checked the other+ host/+ namejoins:card()andAlertMsgalready escape, and toast strings are plain text. splitMessageheld up well against realistic dashboard output. I swept multi-card<b>…</b>\n<pre>…</pre>replies across many line widths and sizes, and every chunk came out ≤ 4096 bytes with balanced tags.
A few things need changing before this can merge. The first two are correctness issues I reproduced with small tests.
1. 🔴 Index-based sr: / xr: / cr: can remove the wrong item (regression)
With name-based data, a stale button could only miss. With a bare index, a stale button removes whichever item now sits at that position. The i >= len(list) guard only catches a list that shrank past the index. It doesn't catch a list whose items shifted.
Repro (a test I ran against this branch):
a.cfg.Watch.SSLHosts = []string{"a.example", "b.example", "c.example"}
_, kb := a.watchingView() // "🗑 b.example" button has Data "cr:1"
a.sslManage([]string{"remove", "a.example"}) // user removes a.example via /ssl remove (or from another /watching message)
a.handleWatchCallback(ctx, "cr:1") // taps 🗑 b.example on the older message
// -> toast "🗑 c.example", remaining [b.example]The user taps delete on b.example, and c.example is silently removed from monitoring and persisted to config. Any older /watching message can trigger this, as can a /ssl remove or a scan-add in between. For a monitoring agent, silently dropping the wrong check is worse than the original bug.
Suggested fix: bind the index to the item it was rendered for, and still stay well under 64 bytes. For example, add a short fingerprint:
fmt.Sprintf("cr:%d:%08x", i, crc32.ChecksumIEEE([]byte(h))) // "cr:12:1a2b3c4d" = 14 bytesIn the callback, check that crc32(list[i]) matches and answer "stale list" otherwise. Alternatively, search the current list for the item whose checksum matches. Please apply the same approach to hr: while you're there, since it has the same pre-existing flaw.
Please also add tests for:
- a stale index after the list shifted (must not remove anything)
- the
"stale list"path, which is currently untested xr:, which has no test at all
2. 🔴 clampKeyboard truncation breaks the buttons it is meant to protect
After this PR, the only callback data that can still go over 64 bytes is the alert snooze button, "snz:" + key in internal/agent/keyboard.go:93. Its keys include user- and host-controlled names: ssl:<host>, docker:<name>, docker-restart:<name>, disk:<mountpoint>. Truncating that data doesn't make the button work. It makes the button lie:
key = "docker-restart:myproject-very-long-service-name-worker-queue-1" (66 bytes as snz: data)
sent = "snz:docker-restart:myproject-very-long-service-name-worker-queue"
Tapping 🔕 1h replies "Snoozed for 1h" but snoozes a key that doesn't exist, so the alert keeps firing. With the long SSL host from the issue (status.some-long-customer-domain.example.co.uk:8443), snz:ssl:<host> is already at 59 bytes, so a slightly longer host hits this.
The truncation also cuts on a byte boundary. If byte 64 falls inside a multibyte rune (for example a mount point like /media/…/Données), encoding/json replaces the broken byte with U+FFFD (3 bytes). I measured a 64-byte clamp come out as 66 bytes after marshaling, so Telegram would still reject the whole keyboard with BUTTON_DATA_INVALID.
Suggested fix:
- Make
snz:fit by design. For example, usesnz:<short hash of key>and resolve the hash against the engine's active alert keys, or keep a small hash→key map in the agent. - Keep the guard in
SendMessageKB/EditMessageKBas a last line of defence, but choose one of these behaviors:- drop the oversized button and
log.Printfit, which the issue also allows ("truncates/rejects") - truncate on a rune boundary and log, so the problem is visible rather than silent
- drop the oversized button and
- Add a test for a long snooze key.
3. 🟡 splitMessage hardening (non-blocking, but cheap)
Randomized inputs turned up two edge cases on the hard-cut path, which is used when a single line is longer than the budget:
- Cuts inside a UTF-8 rune (e.g.
…ab&\xc3</pre>/<pre>\xa9 …). This mangles emoji and accents into U+FFFD. A hard cut existed before this PR, but the newcut--shrink loop adds more places where it can happen. Backingcutup withfor cut > 0 && !utf8.RuneStart(s[cut]) { cut-- }fixes it. - Cuts inside an HTML entity (
…&am|p;…).avoidMidTaghandles<…>but not&…;. The same back-up-to-&idea applies. - Chunks with no visible text can come out as, for example,
<blockquote></blockquote>. Telegram rejects those ("message text is empty"), andSendMessageKBthen drops the rest of the reply and the keyboard. That's the same failure as in #42. I couldn't trigger it with realistic dashboard output, but a check that skips or merges whitespace-only chunks would make the function safe for any input.
4. 🟢 Tests and style nits
gofmt -lflagsinternal/telegram/telegram_test.go:("cr:"+long)should be("cr:" + long). Please rungofmt -w.TestSplitMessageHTMLPre: the nestedif !HasSuffix && !Contains { if !Contains {…} }is redundant. A singleif !strings.Contains(chunks[0], "</pre>")does the job. It would also be worth checking that joining the chunks' visible text gives back the original text, so no content is lost at the cuts.TestSSLAddEscapesHost: the firstifis fully covered by the second, so it can be removed.htmlBalancedin the test re-implementsapplyHTMLTags, so both can share the same blind spots. Consider also asserting on hand-written expected chunks for one or two small cases (e.g.limit=40).- In the PR description, the manual test-plan items are unchecked. If you can run
/watchingwith a long host against a real bot after the fixes, please note it.
In short: the escaping fix is ready. Please fix (1) so stale buttons can't remove the wrong item, and (2) make snz: fit within 64 bytes by construction instead of relying on truncation. (3) and (4) are quick follow-ups. Thanks again, this is a solid first contribution and close to done! 🙏

@eliau2005 Feedback addressed in 94db5e8:

Make splitMessage HTML-aware for b/code/pre/blockquote so long replies are not rejected mid-tag. Escape hosts in /ssl add|remove replies. Use index-based sr:/xr:/cr: callback_data like hr:, and clamp callback_data to 64 bytes in SendMessageKB/EditMessageKB. Fixes eliau2005#42
Bind sr/xr/cr/hr indices to a crc32 of the item so a stale /watching keyboard cannot remove a shifted entry. Emit snz:<hash> via a key map instead of truncating long alert keys. Harden splitMessage against mid-rune/mid-entity cuts and drop empty HTML-only chunks; clampKeyboard drops oversized buttons instead of truncating them.

Hi Daniel, thanks for the quick turnaround and addressing the feedback so thoroughly!
Overall this is in great shape:
- Both core blocking issues from the previous review have been addressed.
go build,go vet, gofmt -l ., andgo test -race -count=1 ./...all pass cleanly across all packages.- The index + CRC32 fingerprinting on
sr:/xr:/cr:/hr:works cleanly and correctly prevents wrong-item deletions when lists shift, safely returning "stale list". - The
splitMessagehardening withsafeCuthandles mid-tag/mid-rune/mid-entity cuts and empty tag chunks well.
There is one important behavioral issue with the snooze implementation that needs addressing before merge:
🔴 Snooze buttons break across restarts / updates (Restart Safety)
Alert snooze buttons now use snz:<8-hex crc32> resolved against an in-memory hash→key map. Because this map lives only in memory and isn't persisted, any alert message sent before a daemon restart or self-update will permanently fail with "stale snooze" when its 🔕 button is tapped.
Since the daemon auto-updates and restarts, this means active alert notifications in chat will become un-snoozeable.
Suggested fix:
Keep the direct snz:<key> format whenever len("snz:" + key) <= 64 (which is the vast majority of cases, e.g. normal service names, short hosts, disks). Only fall back to snz:<hash> via the in-memory map when the key genuinely exceeds 64 bytes.
This preserves full restart-safety for normal alerts while still guaranteeing that oversized keys never break the keyboard.
🟡 Housekeeping & PR Description
- PR Description: The description still mentions that
clampKeyboardtruncates callback data, rather than dropping oversized buttons and logging them. Please update the summary/table to match the new implementation. - Tests check: In
TestSplitMessageHTMLPre, consider verifying that the joined visible text matches the full original text (rather than just checkingstrings.Contains).
Once the snooze restart-safety is in place, this is ready to merge! 🚀
Duplicate submission due to CLI syntax issue
Use direct alert keys whenever Telegram's callback limit allows, retaining hashed lookup only for oversized keys.

Separate direct and hashed callback namespaces.
When a short key such as hdeadbeef is emitted as snz:hdeadbeef, resolveSnoozeKey parses it as hash 0xdeadbeef. With no matching map entry, handleCallback reports a stale snooze. If snoozeKeys[0xdeadbeef] contains another key, the callback snoozes that mapped key instead.
Use explicit formats such as snz:d:<key> and snz:h:<digest>. Preserve legacy direct callbacks only where they are unambiguous; snz:h<8-hex-digits> cannot distinguish a direct key from a hashed callback.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Use collision-resistant digests for both callback identity encoders.
internal/agent/keyboard.go:snoozeCallbackData stores oversized alert keys by CRC32. A later colliding key overwrites the earlier map entry, so its callback can snooze the wrong alert. The callback guard checks only the configured chat ID.
internal/agent/watch.go:watchIndexData and matchWatchItem accept a matching index and CRC32. For example, /http add accepts both https://example.com/f2R and https://example.com/7KKrF; both produce CRC32 00ed2a65. A stale callback for the first URL can therefore pass validation after the second URL replaces it at the same index and remove the second URL.
Use a fixed-size truncated SHA-256 digest at both identity encoders. Encode enough digest bytes for collision resistance while keeping every callback below Telegram's 64-byte limit.

Preserve the newline at each split boundary.
When cut selects a newline, s = s[cut:] leaves that newline at the start of the remainder. The following lines remove it. Long <pre> messages can therefore merge adjacent lines and lose visible content.
Keep the newline in the next chunk. Update TestSplitMessageHTMLPre to compare the complete joined visible text with the original visible text. The change keeps the existing size and progress invariants because the newline is counted in the next chunk and cut still advances the remainder.

Approving — thanks Daniel, this is ready. 🚀
Both blockers from my earlier reviews are resolved in af1365e:
- Wrong-item removal —
sr:/xr:/cr:/hr:now carryindex + crc32fingerprints and answerstale listwhen the list has shifted, with tests covering the shift-after-remove and malformed/stale paths. - Snooze restart-safety — normal keys keep the direct
snz:<key>form (valid across restarts) and only genuinely oversized keys fall back to the in-memory hash map.clampKeyboarddrops + logs oversized buttons instead of truncating.
go build, go vet, and go test ./internal/telegram ./internal/agent all pass; CI is green.
CodeRabbit's three open findings are non-blocking for a single-server deployment, so I've moved them to a follow-up hardening issue (#69) rather than holding this PR:
splitMessagedrops the newline at a cut boundary — cosmetic here since chunks are separate messages, but a cheap fix.snz:h<8hex>direct/hashed namespace can collide in theory (no current key shape hits it).- CRC32 isn't collision-resistant — negligible risk at this list size; optional SHA-256 swap.
Merging this as-is. 🙏
