brpc bthread_usleep bthread::Mutex migration mutex ownership official source
💡 Result:
**Bottom line:** A brpc bthread may resume on a different worker pthread after `bthread_usleep()`. So a lock that is *owned by the OS thread*—for example, a `pthread_mutex` or `std::mutex`—should not be held across that call and then unlocked or reacquired by the resumed bthread. brpc’s official thread-local guidance explicitly warns that after `bthread_usleep`, the bthread may be on a different pthread. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/cn/thread_local.md?utm_source=openai))
`bthread::Mutex` wraps `bthread_mutex_t`; use it for synchronization across bthread suspension points. Its lock/unlock operations act on the bthread mutex, rather than relying on the current pthread as owner. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/src/bthread/mutex.h?utm_source=openai))
Caveat: `bthread_usleep()` calls `TaskGroup::usleep()` when running as a bthread, but falls back to ordinary `usleep()` in other contexts. This is the behavior shown in the current `master` source; if you mean a particular brpc release, check that version’s implementation. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/src/bthread/bthread.cpp?utm_source=openai))

Use bthread::Mutex for mux_.
RemoveStore holds std::mutex mux_ while it calls bthread_usleep(100). A bthread can resume on a different pthread after that suspension, so it can unlock a std::mutex locked by another pthread. This can cause undefined behavior.

official brpc bthread_usleep bthread migration pthread thread local scheduler documentation
💡 Result:
**Official brpc sources:**
- [`bthread_usleep` implementation](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/src/bthread/bthread.cpp): in a bthread, it calls the scheduler’s sleep function; in a pthread context, it falls back to `usleep`. So a bthread sleep yields the worker for other tasks, while a system sleep blocks the pthread. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/src/bthread/bthread.cpp))
- [Bthread guide](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/cn/bthread.md): warns that if every worker is occupied by bthreads blocked in system calls such as `usleep`, RPC processing can stall. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/cn/bthread.md))
- [Server documentation: pthread mode and TLS](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/en/server.md): a bthread can resume on a different pthread after blocking, so pthread-local values may not be there. The docs recommend bthread-local or removing TLS; pthread mode is a compatibility option for legacy code. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/en/server.md?utm_source=openai))
- [Threading overview](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/en/threading_overview.md): describes scheduler runqueues and dispatching user threads across system threads. ([github.com](https://github.com/apache/brpc/blob/master/docs/en/threading_overview.md))
**Practical takeaway:** Don’t rely on `thread_local`, `__thread`, or `pthread_getspecific()` to hold per-request state across a bthread yield or blocking RPC. Use brpc’s bthread-local APIs (`bthread_key_*` / `bthread_getspecific` / `bthread_setspecific`) or request/session-local storage. The links above are the current `master` sources; behavior for a particular release may differ.

Do not hold ScopedStoreBinding across bthread waits.
When ELOQ_MODULE_ENABLED is active and the host calls Start or Stop from a bthread, these waits can resume on another pthread. eloq_store is pthread-local, so code after the wait can read the other pthread's binding. The binding destructor also restores prev_ on that pthread, while the original pthread retains the store pointer and can later expose a dangling pointer.
Start waits on BootstrapTermSyncState::Wait(), which uses a bthread condition variable. Stop calls bthread_usleep(1000) while waiting for Starting, and CleanupRuntime calls it again while waiting for module workers.
Scope ScopedStoreBinding only around non-yielding shard and I/O setup or teardown. End the scope before these waits. Alternatively, pass the store explicitly to the setup and teardown code instead of using the thread-local binding.

Return an error from Start instead of CHECK-aborting the process when no slot is free.
A ninth concurrent store triggers this CHECK. The CHECK aborts the whole process, which also stops the other 8 healthy stores. A data store service starts one store per data shard it leads. The store count therefore depends on cluster topology, not on a compile-time bound. Make AddStore return bool. In EloqStore::Start, call fail_start(KvError::...) when AddStore returns false. fail_start runs CleanupRuntime(started_shards). That cleanup runs with in_module_ == false. Confirm that CleanupRuntime still stops the started shards in this state, or set the shards to Stopped explicitly.

Use canonical test paths and CleanupStore() for the two-store test.
CreateTestDir places data outside the required test directories, and cleanup runs only after the final assertions. A failed assertion can leave test data behind. This is a test-data hygiene issue, not a data-integrity issue: equal-timestamp writes replace existing values, so stale values are not shown to mask these assertions.

A data store service runs one EloqStore per data shard it leads, so one process may run several stores. Each store registered a brpc module of its own, and task code found its store through one process-global pointer, so a second store replaced or cleared the first one's binding. - EloqStoreModule::Instance(): one module serves every store in the process, registered with brpc when the first store joins. Worker thd_id runs shard thd_id of each store in turn. A store joins at Start (AddStore) and leaves once its shards have stopped (RemoveStore), which waits until no worker is still running one of them; at most kMaxStores (8) run at once. - eloq_store is bound per thread, like shard: on a shard's own thread, on a brpc worker while the module runs one of the store's shards, and on the calling thread for the duration of EloqStore::Start and Stop (ScopedStoreBinding). - Tests: two stores run side by side in one process (eloq_store_test.cpp); persist.cpp no longer depends on the case order the global pointer forced. - Docs: architecture 02 and 10 describe the per-thread binding and the shared module. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
CreateValidOptions() sets 8 KB coroutine stacks, which suits the other cases of eloq_store_test.cpp: they validate options or start and stop stores without running a task. The two-store case writes and reads, and in a Debug build a write on such a stack overflowed it (SIGSEGV in the dynamic linker, resolving a symbol on the coroutine stack, with the fault in the stack's guard page). The case now uses the default coroutine stack size. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Base the two-store options on default_opts.
CreateValidOptions constructs a separate options set and does not delegate to the canonical preset in tests/common.h. Use default_opts as the base, set the test directory, preserve the test-specific fields, and keep the larger stack override. The coroutine_stack_size override is intentional because this test performs writes and the helper's 8 KB stack is too small in Debug builds.

In the two-store test, replace the CreateValidOptions-based initialization with
default_opts, then set store_path to dir and preserve the test-specific fields
num_threads, data_page_size, overflow_pointers, max_write_batch_pages, and
fd_limit. Retain the larger coroutine_stack_size override.

Start and Stop run on whatever thread the embedding calls them from; in the data store service that is often an RPC handler's bthread, which can resume on another worker after a wait. They bound eloq_store on that thread for their whole duration, across those waits, so the binding could be set on one pthread and restored onto another. The only read of the binding on that thread was BatchWriteTask's constructor, which took the options through Options() while Start built each shard's task pools. It now takes the options explicitly, and TaskPool passes them to the task types that take them; its up-front tasks are kept in a deque, so they can be built with an argument and are never moved. - ScopedStoreBinding is gone: Start and Stop bind nothing. - Shard::Start no longer sets the caller's shard thread-local in module builds; a worker binds the shard each time it runs it. - The eloq_store comment and docs/architecture/02 say that only a thread doing a shard's work binds it. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Preserve the null-options constructor path.
When a caller constructs TaskManager(nullptr), the default-size branch accepts the null pointer. The batch-write pool then passes it to BatchWriteTask, which dereferences it in src/tasks/batch_write_task.cpp Line 24. Initialization fails before any task runs. Supply valid default options for this path, or explicitly remove the nullable constructor contract and update its callers.

Problem
A data store service runs one EloqStore per data shard it leads, so one process can run several stores. This happens, for example, when a node with a co-located data store service takes over another node group's shard as a voter. Each store registered a brpc module of its own, and task code found its store through one process-global
