What merging accepts (per the maintainer decision of 2026-10-17). Before merge, everything here is a proposal and ADR 0023 governs unchanged. Merging accepts the authorship decision and the core architecture, and authorizes a bounded first implementation (exact-basis validity; dependency-scoped validity deferred for the new profile only; existing profiles unchanged; a flat-text first witness). Merging does not ratify the detailed specification: layouts, encodings, digests, codes, validation-step order, metering, recovery variants, and scoped or delayed validity stay provisional. Each becomes a compatibility obligation only alongside an executable check with independent expected results. The design's What merging accepts section is the authoritative statement. Nothing is implemented. Do not merge until every review finding is resolved and the final head is approved.

What this decides

  1. Decision (in docs/topics/GeneratedRules.md, the topic that owns executable-operation authorship): Jedit's persistent-rope ReplaceRange law is authored in Jedit-owned Edict source. This supersedes only the declarative-resource requirements of ADR 0023's "Jedit rope-law closure" section, enumerated in that section's banner, and its selection under "Alternatives for Expressing the Rope Law". Everything else still governs, including the canonical text-schema declaration and its closure refusal (now applied to the compiled Edict program) and the prohibited forms (no callbacks, no MutationPlan, no native replace-range intrinsic). ADR 0023 keeps its original text and reasoning; the supersession is linked in its header, the affected section, and the alternatives text, per the documentation standards' two-way rule.
  2. Design docs/architecture/authored-operation-effects.md: how an evaluated Edict operation becomes graph effects. Evaluation proposes typed node and edge effects (EnsureNode, CreateNode, ReplaceAtom, EnsureEdge, ReplaceEdge). Echo witnesses the read set, including negative observations, validates writes against a declared footprint law, basis, budget, authority, and identity law, and commits the whole proposal in one decided Tick or obstructs with no patch. Receipts distinguish NoProposal from Proposed { … }. Recovery keeps Echo's existing preparation re-derivation and identity comparison; verification is not re-admission. No patch authority, no application vocabulary, no second persistence path, and no claim about Continuum transport or replica import.

Why now: evidence ADR 0023 did not have

  • The declarative rope-law resource was never implemented in any crate.
  • Edict main now has proven unsigned subtraction, bounded byte length/slice/concat, and source functions; Echo feat(edict): execute authenticated source functions in pure and read operations #753 evaluates them.
  • Every route (resource, Edict source, or a native splice) is gated by the same generic gap: there is no admitted path from an evaluated Edict operation to graph writes. Today the admitted programs are single-node compare-and-set and create-if-absent of caller-supplied bytes.

Also in this PR

  • docs(changelog): merge duplicated Unreleased subsections, a separate, purely mechanical fix. Unreleased had two each of Added/Removed/Changed/Fixed, so markdownlint (MD024) failed on main for any commit touching CHANGELOG.md. Sorted line content is identical apart from the four removed duplicate headings and four blank lines.
  • The proposal itself adds no CHANGELOG entry: the changelog records shipped behavior.

Not in this PR

No runtime change. No implementation of the bridge. The open questions are listed at the end of the design.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added documentation for an accepted, not-yet-implemented approach to authoring operations that propose bounded, validated graph changes.
    • Updated architecture and decision records to identify the selected Edict-source approach, superseded alternatives, and current implementation status.
    • Documented that proposed graph changes would be committed together or not at all.
  • Chores
    • Updated the unreleased changelog with notes on retired APIs, crates, documentation, and tooling, alongside API, runtime, scheduler, verification, and tooling changes and fixes.

Unreleased carried two Added, two Removed, two Changed, and two Fixed
subsections, which markdownlint reports as MD024 duplicate headings on
main and which blocks any commit that touches CHANGELOG.md. Move each
second group's entries under the first heading of the same name.

The change is a pure reordering: sorted line content is identical except
for the four removed duplicate headings and four blank lines.
Record a proposed decision, in the topic that owns executable-operation
authorship, that Jedit's ReplaceRange rope law is authored in Jedit-owned
Edict source. It supersedes only ADR 0023's "Jedit rope-law closure"
section and its selection under "Alternatives for Expressing the Rope
Law"; every other ADR 0023 provision still governs. ADR 0023 now links
the supersession in its header, the affected section, and the
alternatives text, and keeps its original rationale.

The new evidence: the declarative resource route was never implemented;
Edict source and Echo's evaluators have grown since 2026-07-18; and both
routes are gated by the same missing piece, an admitted path from an
evaluated Edict operation to graph writes.

Add a proposed design, Authored Operation Effects, for that piece:
evaluation proposes typed node and edge effects, Echo witnesses the read
set and validates writes against a declared footprint law, and the whole
proposal commits atomically in one decided Tick or obstructs with no
patch. It adds no patch authority, no application vocabulary, and no
second persistence path.

Both documents are proposals for review and change no runtime behavior.

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/plans/2026-07-18-jim-edict-echo-executable-warp-semantics.md: Adds a notice that ADR 0023’s Jedit lawpack-resource route is partly superseded, effective when flyingrobots/echo#889 merges, by the linked Edict-source approach; the inventory’s lawpack-resource steps remain as historical evidence.
  • observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Adds removal notes for retired APIs, crates, documentation, and tooling, including the caller-authoritative causal-anchor API, Method system, warp-core/serde, and warp-ffi.

Add invariant 4: no committed coordinate contains an edge to an absent
node, so a retargeted head is never observable before everything it
reaches. Validation rejects dangling endpoints with DanglingReference,
because GraphStore::upsert_edge_record does not check them, and commit
makes partial visibility impossible by binding all effects to one Tick
published only after its decided WAL record.

State that reads are witnessed through a recording view over a bounded
slice rather than declared, and that today's edict_read only counts
reads, so this is new instrumentation. State the composition rule for
shared structure: an Ensure of an identical existing node is a read, and
two Actions creating the same new node conflict under the existing set
test, with no new merge rule; a retry sees the node and reads it.

Add three concrete execution traces for Jim's reference ReplaceRange:
committed, obstructed by a stale basis at evaluation, and rejected at
composition. Extend the required tests accordingly.

Review questions, answered in 791e2b56

1. Does Echo establish the actual footprint, or trust the program's declarations? Echo establishes it. The program declares nothing it read: evaluation reaches state only through a recording view over the basis, so the read set is exactly the slots that view resolved. The write set is derived by Echo from the typed effects, and the patch is derived from those. The package's footprint law only bounds both. Honest gap: today's edict_read counts reads but records no read set, so this is new instrumentation (stated in the doc).

2. Atomic, including crashes? Yes, using the existing decided-Tick WAL, not a new path. All of an Action's effects land in one Tick; the Tick is published only after its WAL record. A crash before the record loses the Tick, and the still-pending Action re-evaluates against the unchanged basis to the same proposal; a crash after recovers the Tick with the same state root and receipt.

3. Identical content-addressed node reuse without false conflict? An Ensure of a node already identical in the basis adds nothing to the patch and counts as a read, so Actions sharing existing structure never conflict. Two Actions in one Tick that both create the same new node do conflict under the existing set test, and the later is rejected; I deliberately added no merge rule. On retry the node exists, the Ensure becomes a read, and the conflict disappears. Different content under the same id is ContentIdentityConflict.

4. Bounded slices rather than the whole graph? The view resolves slots on demand (Sliced Readings law 1); the read limit and footprint law bound the slice; reaching past either obstructs. The contract never relies on full materialization, even if a first implementation sits on today's full worldline state. The state root's full walk remains Echo's open decision, not something this design closes.

Head visibility. New invariant 4: no committed coordinate contains an edge to an absent node. GraphStore::upsert_edge_record does not check endpoints, so validation rejects any EnsureEdge/ReplaceEdge whose endpoints are neither in the basis nor created in the same proposal (DanglingReference). Combined with one-Tick commit and publish-after-WAL, the coordinate before shows the old head and the coordinate after shows the new head with everything it reaches. Patch order inside the Tick is never observable.

Traces. The doc now walks Jim's reference ReplaceRange through three cases with every read, effect, validation check, patch operation, and visibility boundary: committed (8 patch ops), obstructed by a stale basis at evaluation, and rejected at composition then obstructed on retry.

Record observed absence as a dependency (missing node or atom, empty or
specific outgoing-edge set) against the basis, so a co-scheduled Action
that creates the slot invalidates the reader. Align dependency kinds
with the Action validity across ticks decision (#837): value and
single-key absence are supported; reading edges by type is a topology
dependency that keeps the whole-frontier rule until sound edge-set
tracking exists there.

Make retry identity explicit: a decided outcome, receipt, and
attribution never change; a retry is a new submission with its own
identity; Echo does not retry on its own; and a never-decided Action
recovered after a crash is the same submission, not a retry. Update the
composition trace and the required tests accordingly.

Refs flyingrobots/jedit#302
…contracts

Add an identity chain: submission (Submission Attribution and canonical
inbox sequencing), Action (ADR 0023/0025), proposal (new, evidence only,
deterministic per Action and basis), and decision (recorded once by
submission_id). The bridge removes no admission check, adds no identity
root, and persists nothing outside the decided-Tick WAL record.

Retries now rest on Echo's existing intake idempotence: identical content
returns the existing submission as Duplicate with its original outcome;
a real new attempt must differ, which makes it a new submission.

The new receipt-entry fields change an encoding that commit hash v3
binds, so they need a new entry format version under Submission
Attribution's format rules. Recovery replays decided Ticks and checks the
patch digest and commit hash without re-evaluating; scoped-validity
Actions follow #837's recomputation; undecided Actions re-evaluate as the
same submission. Extend the required tests accordingly.

Merge-readiness checklist (210eb394)

The three conditions for merging this design, each with where it now holds:

1. Preserves admission, attribution, WAL, and recovery.

  • Admission: the bridge runs inside scheduler-owned Tick construction after ordinary admission and only adds checks (footprint law, identity law, referential integrity, compare-before-replace). See Lifecycle, Visibility and referential integrity.
  • Attribution: unchanged. An Action batch already maps each candidate to its own receipt entry; the attribution section still names only submission_ids. See Identity and existing contracts.
  • WAL: the decided-Tick record (EPRV0003) is the only persistence; proposals are never retained on their own.
  • Recovery: decided Ticks replay their patch and are checked by patch digest and commit hash v3 without re-evaluation; scoped-validity Actions follow Actions that wait for a later tick are obstructed with BasisChanged, capping a frame at one tick of commits #837's recomputation; undecided Actions re-evaluate as the same submission.
  • Honest cost: the new receipt-entry fields change an encoding commit hash v3 binds, so they need a new entry format version under Submission Attribution's format rules.

2. Actual reads, including absence, validate the complete footprint.

3. Proposal, decision, and retry stay distinct; nothing is rewritten.

  • Submission → Action → proposal (evidence only, deterministic) → decision (recorded once). See Identity and existing contracts.
  • A decided outcome is final. Identical resubmission returns Duplicate with the original outcome (existing intake idempotence); a real new attempt must differ (rebased basis or a causal parent), which makes it a new submission. Echo never retries on its own; recovery of an undecided Action is not a retry.

Required tests now cover each of these. If the review agrees, I propose merging the design and starting the smallest vertical only: Edict-authored flat-text ReplaceRange → Echo evaluation → proposed effects → atomic commit → canonical receipt. No AVL, no filesystem braid, and no Edict features beyond what that vertical needs.

The changelog records shipped behavior. The decision and design in this
branch are documentation and change no runtime behavior.
Acceptance: the decision and the design are accepted effective when
#889 merges to main; before that they govern nothing and ADR 0023 is
unchanged. ADR 0023's rope-law closure banner now enumerates exactly
which resource requirements are superseded and which still govern, and
keeps the original text for its reasoning. Acceptance covers the
contract, not an implementation.

Design corrections from review:
- keep recovery's preparation re-derivation and identity comparison,
extended to the new evidence; verification is not re-admission
- scope the 128-operation limit to Action batches, not Ticks
- give receipts an explicit NoProposal posture for evaluations that
  obstruct before proposing
- scope referential integrity to edges a proposal adds or retargets
- rewrite the stale-basis trace at a later evaluation coordinate
- compare proposals, not receipts, across Tick contexts
- test write/read as well as write/write composition conflicts
- state that the bridge implies no Continuum transport or replica import

@codex review please, focus on whether the acceptance-on-merge wording leaves any window where ADR 0023 and the new decision both govern, the NoProposal/Proposed receipt posture, and whether the recovery section still matches trusted_runtime_host.rs verification.

Re-review found three gaps:
- An oversized proposal obstructed by the Action-batch operation limit
keeps posture Proposed with its digests; only evaluation-budget
  exhaustion is NoProposal.
- Current recovery verifies by outcome class: BasisChanged obstructions
are not re-evaluated, and a scheduler-assigned BudgetExceeded is
verified through batch reconstruction. The bridge now adds its evidence
to each class's existing check instead of claiming uniform
  re-evaluation.
- ADR 0023's evidence-grade lawpack row, Jurisdiction, and Consequences
still assumed the resource route; each is now marked superseded in part
where it appears and listed in the rope-law closure banner. The
2026-07-18 plan points at the superseding decision.

Add invariant 5: an outcome that carries a proposal identity binds it to
the exact evaluated effects, committed or rejected, so a rejected
proposal is never ambiguous on replay or audit. Add a recovery matrix
naming, per outcome class, the posture, the existing check, and what the
bridge adds, and record that BasisChanged is decided before evaluation
(NoProposal, empty read set). Correct the invariant count.

@codex review please, focus on invariant 5 (every outcome carrying a proposal identity binds the exact evaluated effects) and whether the recovery matrix matches trusted_runtime_host.rs per outcome class, including BasisChanged being decided before evaluation.

# Conflicts:
#	CHANGELOG.md
- One effect per slot: two effects on one slot obstruct with
DuplicateEffectTarget, since WarpTickPatchV1::new keeps the last
operation per key and would drop effects the identity names.
- Outgoing-edge range keys (source, edge type): a range read and any edge
write with that source and type conflict, closing a same-Tick phantom
that disjoint edge-id sets cannot see.
- Proposed carries a patch tag: Derived with its digest, or NotDerived
when validation refused the proposal before any patch existed.
- Basis change splits into whole-frontier (before evaluation,
NoProposal, empty read set) and dependency-scoped (after evaluation at
the origin, keeping the proposal and read set).
- New evidence is retained only as EPRV0004; the EPRV0003 decoder and
  legacy Ticks stay unchanged.
- Recovery's batch reconstruction, outcome equality, and blocker
recomputation are stated as common checks; the lifecycle summary and
  visibility test are scoped correctly.
- ADR 0023's package binding direction and obligations bind a lawpack
only for programs imported from one.

…ortal reads

Round 32 on the authored-effects bridge, checked against the batch code
in echo_operation.rs:

- A bridge receipt entry gets a canonical synthetic scope (the root warp
plus the invocation identity) and V1's scope_hash, recomputed on
  recovery.
- Batch rewrites and composition digests: a Tick of fixed-profile Actions
alone keeps V1 byte for byte. A Tick with a bridge Action uses v2
domains and a member kind byte. A bridge member's tuple is its proposal
identity, candidate patch digest, result identity, evaluation-basis
  identity, and write-set digest.
- The proposal header's cost is evaluation-only, so proposal identity
does not depend on how far validation ran.
- Allocation: the program's declared ceiling bounds evaluation, capped at
admission by a fixed profile ceiling (16 MiB). A host short of it fails
as a host fault, never an obstruction.
- An evaluation-time FootprintLawViolation joins the NoProposal recovery
  row.
- An atom read of a portal has its own outcome (3), with the portal digest,
  authorized through portal_owner_types.
- Six tests are added.

…sult projection

Round 33 on the authored-effects bridge:

- A portal atom read now also reads and charges the slot owner's node
record, and records the owner's type as read_type, so
portal_owner_types is decided from the row alone. The owner record is a
  resolved-record dependency.
- program-v2-effect carries max_input_bytes and max_result_bytes, each
capped at 65,536 as ADR 0025 requires. A longer result is
  BudgetExceeded with NoProposal.
- A V2 package must omit application_result_projection: an effect
program's result is its own output, bound by result_identity.
- Two tests are added and the portal test is updated.

Round 34 on the authored-effects bridge:

- The recording view authorizes each node, atom and portal read (its
read_type against the law's read permissions, and max_reads) before
the program sees the value. An out-of-law read obstructs evaluation at
once with FootprintLawViolation and NoProposal, so a forbidden value
can never shape an authored guard or a BudgetExceeded exit, which
previously skipped step 7. Step 7 rechecks the recorded rows, as
recovery does, and the NoProposal recovery row covers this case.
- Tests now match the normative rules: max_reads counts read-set rows
(typed absent probes count separately), and the allocation test no
longer intersects with a host ceiling.

…charge; minimum budget

Round 35 on the authored-effects bridge:

- A read in a descended warp resolves and authorizes its root-to-target
chain before its value is visible: portal charges, owner types, and
UnreachableWarp, all at evaluation with NoProposal. No inaccessible
value can shape an evaluation exit.
- The arena's result capacity comes from max_result_bytes as well as
max_allocated_bytes, since a result can carry bytes the program never
  allocated.
- Adopting an existing content node hashes and charges its atom at
step 2, before the step-6 identity law needs it.
- An effect program's minimum budget is fixed at one step and zero bytes,
applied at admission exactly as V1 applies minimum_budget().
- Four tests are added.

…d recovery

Round 36 on the authored-effects bridge:

- Footprint laws have effect-profile ceilings, checked at admission:
  max_reads 4,096, max_writes 256, max_range_edges 65,536. The arena is
sized from each maximum clamped to what the delegated budget can pay
for, so no law can overflow sizing or force host faults.
- ReplaceAtom requires its alpha slot to hold an atom. A portal there is
PreconditionMismatch before derivation, never a portal silently removed
  by the patch.
- An evaluation-time UnreachableWarp (a read through an unreachable warp)
  joins the NoProposal recovery row.
- output_type must be nonempty UTF-8 of at most 1,024 bytes, as V1
  bounds result coordinates.
- The absent-atom-probe test now requires evaluation-time refusal.

…ssion table

Round 37 on the authored-effects bridge:

- Effect-profile budget ceilings at admission (1,048,576 steps, 64 MiB
read, 16 MiB write) and at most 1,024 effects per proposal, counted at
emission. Every budget- or count-sized arena region is now bounded,
including against idempotent Ensures that write nothing.
- A portal chain the recording view resolved for a read is not charged
again at step 1, under the once-per-Action rule.
- Step 7 gives an exact per-effect permission table for writes and their
implied reads. Present implied node records need read_node_types, so an
atom-only scoped Action needs no write_node_types.
- The portal-chain test records effect-chain portals as footprint and
  dependency entries, not witnessed reads.
- Three tests are added.

…able checks

Round 38 on the authored-effects bridge:

- An existing content node's type, atom and outgoing edges are compared
with the proposal at step 2. A mismatch is ContentIdentityConflict
there, so the step-6 identity law only sees matching content and the
  Ensure contract's outcome holds.
- The permission table authorizes every edge a content-node bucket scan
reads, by type, against write_edge_types or range_edge_types.
- ReplaceAtom's current alpha value is read, hashed and charged at
step 2, so step 7 can check its type; step 8 compares it without a
  second charge.
- ReplaceEdge no longer requires the old target's type: that node is
  never read.
- Three tests are added.

Maintainer decision on #889 (relayed verbatim by another session; jim-1c remains the sole writer)

My vote: approve Edict authorship and the core architecture now; keep the detailed bridge specification provisional until a small implementation demonstrates it. That is essentially alternatives 2 + 3 + 4, with an important correction: deterministic budgets and memory ownership cannot become “we’ll figure that out later.”

I inspected #889 at 58ff64cd, including the design, authorship decision, and ownership ruling. This is an architectural assessment, not an independent implementation test.

The central design is sound: an admitted program proposes typed effects, Echo witnesses its reads, and Echo validates and derives the authoritative patch. Application behavior stays in Jedit; admission, atomicity, and history stay in Echo. That preserves the boundary you want. Design

I would make three decisions.

1. Accept Jedit-owned Edict source for the rope law.

The rationale is compelling: the declarative resource never materialized, Edict now has relevant capabilities, and both routes need the same generic effect bridge. Building another language-shaped resource format would add a second semantics problem before solving the first.

Preserve the existing prohibitions: no application callbacks, caller-supplied patches, or editor-specific intrinsic smuggled into Echo. Keep Jedit’s versioned schema and identity commitments. This decision authorizes the direction; it does not make ReplaceRange executable yet. Authorship decision

2. Authorize a bounded first implementation using exact-basis validity.

For the new bridge profile, start with:

  • The five typed effects.
  • Evaluation against the exact commit parent.
  • Witnessed reads, including absence and outgoing-edge ranges.
  • Canonical validation and obstruction precedence.
  • Echo-derived patches, atomic publication, and receipt-bound evidence.
  • Recovery that verifies the original decision without making a new one.

Defer dependency-scoped validity for this new profile. Preserve existing profiles’ behavior.

That is a meaningful reduction: Jedit’s structural edits already require whole-frontier validity under the proposed design. Scoped validity currently helps the narrower case of replacing atoms on existing mutable nodes. It adds substantial machinery without enabling the motivating rope operation.

But exact-basis validity does not eliminate same-tick conflicts. Two Actions can read the same parent, and one can invalidate the other’s observations. Range dependencies and complete conflict footprints remain necessary wherever the first implementation allows concurrent composition.

The first end-to-end witness should perform an authored edit that creates content, links it, and moves the head atomically, then recover it on a fresh engine. A flat-text representation is acceptable for that milestone. The design already correctly distinguishes this from completing the persistent rope. Acceptance targets

3. Accept exact encodings and detailed algorithms alongside executable evidence.

Architecture can legitimately be accepted before implementation. Requiring code before any architectural decision would create its own paralysis.

But this PR couples that architecture to precise layouts, failure precedence, metering, recovery variants, and delayed-validity rules. Those details need executable checks before becoming compatibility obligations.

The decisive witnesses should include:

  • Several simultaneous violations produce the specified first obstruction.
  • Duplicate targets cannot disappear through patch deduplication.
  • A forbidden read never reaches authored computation.
  • A same-tick edge insertion conflicts with a relevant range observation.
  • Failure on the last effect leaves no partial mutation.
  • Cold and warm scratch produce identical evidence.
  • Crash recovery reproduces committed, obstructed, and conflicting outcomes.

A compiler will catch layout mistakes; it will not automatically catch a wrong dependency model. Use independent expected results and adversarial cases, not merely two implementations sharing the same assumptions.

I would modify the essay’s recommendation to defer the memory model. The design already distinguishes metered evaluator allocation from host memory, which is correct. Keep deterministic charging, bounded capacity, and the rule that host allocation failure cannot become an Action obstruction. Physical zero-copy layouts can remain provisional; any bytes entering identities or retained evidence must be fixed before that profile ships. Your earlier #909 principle applies directly: scratch history cannot become a semantic input.

There is also a consequential decision buried in the basis section: unreachable records remain readable by key. That means an old rope chunk cannot simply be discarded because the current root no longer reaches it. Reclamation must preserve those reads or change them through an explicit semantic mechanism. This can fit Echo’s history model, but it constrains storage and garbage collection. I would require that choice to be acknowledged explicitly, rather than accepted incidentally with the bridge. Basis semantics

For integration, keep jim-1c as the sole writer under the existing ruling. Have that session reconcile the final diff and revise the acceptance language and supersession links so merging cannot accidentally accept the entire provisional specification. The next useful milestone is one executable edit with convincing evidence, not another arbitrary number of clean prose reviews.

…p details provisional

Reconciles #889 with the maintainer decision of 2026-10-17
(#889 (comment)):
merging must not ratify the whole provisional specification.

- authored-operation-effects.md gains "What merging accepts", which
separates three strengths: accepted architecture (Edict authorship, the
ownership boundary, the five invariants, recovery as verification,
deterministic charging and bounded capacity, scratch never a semantic
input, and unreachable records readable by key, acknowledged with its
storage and reclamation cost); the authorized first profile (five typed
effects, exact-basis validity with dependency-scoped validity deferred
for this profile only, witnessed reads including absence and ranges,
canonical validation, Echo-derived patches, atomic publication,
  receipt-bound evidence, verifying recovery; a flat-text first witness;
the decisive adversarial witnesses); and the provisional specification
(layouts, encodings, digests, codes, step order, metering, recovery
variants, scoped and delayed validity, physical layouts), which become
  obligations only alongside executable checks.
- Status line, Basis, Encoding and memory, Required tests, and Open
questions now point at that boundary. Adds the Exact parent, Scratch
independence, and Recovered outcomes test rows, and removes two stray
separator rows that rendered as rows of dashes.
- ADR 0023 and ADR 0025 supersession banners for bridge Actions, the
GeneratedRules decision banner, and the docs index say the merge accepts
the architecture while the detailed bridge contract stays provisional.

Owner reconciliation (jim-1c) at 537c153

Implements the 2026-10-17 maintainer decision; no new architectural decisions.

  • New section What merging accepts separates accepted architecture, the authorized first profile (exact-basis validity, dependency-scoped validity deferred for this profile only, flat-text first witness, the eight decisive witnesses), and the provisional specification, which becomes obligations only alongside executable checks.
  • Deterministic charging, bounded capacity, host-allocation-failure-is-never-an-outcome, and scratch-never-semantic are kept as accepted, not deferred. Unreachable records remain readable by key is now acknowledged explicitly, with its storage and reclamation cost, plus an open question.
  • ADR 0023/0025 bridge supersession banners and the GeneratedRules decision banner now say the merge accepts the architecture while the detailed bridge contract stays provisional. The PR description's acceptance banner is rewritten to match.
  • New test rows: Exact parent, Scratch independence, Recovered outcomes. Two stray mid-table separator rows that rendered as dashes are removed.

@codex review please, focus on whether any sentence in the design, ADR 0023/0025 banners, or GeneratedRules still lets a merge ratify a provisional detail, and whether What merging accepts faithfully matches the 2026-10-17 decision (nothing added, nothing dropped).

Brings the branch up to main 4e801ef+ (including #917's outgoing-edge
range dependencies) so the design's citations describe this tree.

CHANGELOG: main's Unreleased again carried a second Added and Fixed
subsection (markdownlint MD024). Their entries are folded into the
existing Added and Fixed subsections; sorted content is unchanged apart
from the two removed headings and their blank lines. The pre-commit hook
also applied prettier to five Markdown files from main that were not
formatted.
The Current implementation section, the range-read rationale, and the recovery reconstruction text still said Footprint had no range key. Since #917 it has OutgoingEdgeRange claims (r_read, r_write) in footprint and patch identities, retained through scheduling, provenance, and admission. The text now says so and states what remains: claims are declared rather than witnessed, no accessor or edge writer records them, source presence needs its own node dependency, and witnessed reads, complete effect write claims, exact-parent validation, and fresh-engine recovery are still to be built.

Owner update at 51b6df4: merged main (0df5810; CHANGELOG's re-duplicated Added/Fixed folded, content unchanged), and per the maintainer's pre-merge request refreshed the stale Current implementation claim. Footprints have carried outgoing-edge range keys since #917 (OutgoingEdgeRange, r_read/r_write, SlotId::OutgoingEdges). The text now states its limits: claims are declared, not witnessed; no accessor or edge writer records them; source presence needs its own node dependency; witnessed reads, complete effect write claims, exact-parent validation, and fresh-engine recovery remain to be built. The range-read rationale and recovery-reconstruction passages are corrected the same way.

@codex review please, focus on whether the #917 description in Current implementation, the range-read rationale, and the recovery section match crates/warp-core/src/footprint.rs, tick_patch.rs, and #917's stated limits.

Range conflicts participate in blocker computation, but a rejected Action records the indices of the earlier Actions that blocked it (engine_impl.rs pushes reserved_entry_indices after a boolean footprint-conflict check), not the exact conflicting range.
