Owner

Closes #886. Implements the owner ruling recorded on the issue (Option B).

Stacked on #888 (base feat/admission-coverage-after-history-restore). It uses #888's restore coverage, and its restart witness runs through the strand recovery path that #888 changes. Retarget to main once #888 merges.

What changes

A strand inherits a causal past, and an act already present in that past is not a new act because the worldline changed.

  • Inherited set. When a strand forks, live or while WAL recovery replays the fork, Echo records the submissions its copied ticks (0..=fork_tick) attribute. This is derived from the explicit fork basis, not from when the parent accepted a submission.
  • Admission on a strand with no binding of its own walks the fork ancestry. An ancestor's binding counts only when its submission is in the inherited set:
Situation Answer
Same occurrence and binding in the inherited past AlreadyPresentInInheritedHistory { ingress_id, head_key, inherited }, a non-error disposition from submit_intent and ingest. inherited names the original submission, its head and generation, the fork basis, and its receipt when ticketed. Nothing is admitted; the host writes no acceptance.
Same inherited key, conflicting binding RuntimeError::ContinuumOccurrenceConflict naming the original
Absent from the inherited past Ordinary admission on the strand
Decided on the parent after the fork basis Not inherited
Accepted on the parent but pending at the basis Not inherited
  • Nested forks inherit through every level, each bounded by its own fork tick, because a child's prefix carries its ancestors' attributed ticks.
  • Unknown coverage on an ancestor (record-only replay, or a history restore without coverage) obstructs; it is never read as absence.
  • App handle. IntentSubmissionHandle reports an inherited occurrence as a duplicate naming the original submission, with inherited_through: Some(InheritedThrough { source_lane_id, fork_tick, commit_hash }).
  • API. IntentSubmissionDisposition and IngressDisposition gain the variant and are no longer Copy: the inherited evidence is boxed to keep the variants small.

Storage: one set of attributed submission IDs per strand (32 bytes each). The ruling permits copying; an ancestor-walk-only index would need a decision-tick index with its own rollback.

Reconciling occurrences admitted independently on divergent branches is out of scope (a separate merge question).

Witnesses (guarded worker)

  • a_strand_inherits_the_occurrences_of_its_fork_basis: occurrences on either side of the fork basis, one pending at the basis, conflicting reuse, no extra child submission, and nested forks (grandchild after the child's tick, and an early grandchild that sees only the source's past).
  • a_strand_inherits_its_fork_basis_occurrences_across_restart (host, filesystem WAL): after restart, redelivery to the strand returns the original submission with inherited_through, writes no acceptance and witnesses no submission; conflicting reuse is refused; a fresh occurrence is admitted on the strand.
Variant Result
Inheritance lookup disabled both fail
Fork basis ignored (any ancestor binding counts) coordinator test fails (an occurrence decided after the basis is reported as inherited)
This branch pass

Full chain on the merged branch: featured 1865, default 1383, workspace 981 tests pass; six clippy configurations, fmt, rustdoc and docs-model checks clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Strands now recognize occurrences already decided in their inherited history, including across nested forks and restarts. Redelivery returns the original submission details without creating a new acceptance.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Reusing an inherited occurrence key with different content is rejected as a conflict. Occurrences not decided in the copied history continue through normal admission.
    • A strand can no longer be registered when its child worldline is already related to another strand.

A strand inherits a causal past, and an act already present in that past is
not a new act because the worldline changed. When a strand forks, live or
while recovery replays the fork, Echo records the submissions its copied
ticks attribute. Admission on a strand with no binding of its own walks the
fork ancestry: an ancestor's binding counts only when its submission is in
that set, so occurrences undecided at the basis, or decided after it, are
not inherited, and nested forks inherit through every level.

Redelivering an inherited occurrence returns the new non-error disposition
AlreadyPresentInInheritedHistory from submit_intent and ingest, naming the
original submission, its head, the fork basis and its receipt when ticketed.
Nothing is admitted and the host writes no acceptance; the app handle reports
a duplicate with inherited_through set. Reusing an inherited key for other
material is an occurrence conflict. Unknown coverage on an ancestor
obstructs admission.

IntentSubmissionDisposition and IngressDisposition are no longer Copy: the
inherited evidence is boxed to keep the variants small.

📝 Walkthrough

Strands now recognize Continuum occurrences decided in their copied fork prefix. Redelivery returns the original submission and fork context without recording a new acceptance. Different material for the same occurrence key conflicts. Prefix evidence supports nested forks and restart.

Changes: Occurrence lineage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Inherited result contracts
crates/warp-core/src/coordinator.rs, crates/warp-core/src/lib.rs, crates/warp-core/src/strand.rs
Submission and ingress dispositions now include inherited-history results with original submission and fork provenance. Strand registration rejects a child worldline already related to another strand.
Fork-prefix evidence and ancestry lookup
crates/warp-core/src/coordinator.rs
Fork creation records copied-prefix evidence. Submission and ingress check fork ancestry, verify that a decision falls within the inherited bounds, and return inherited results or an obstruction when coverage is incomplete.
Host and ingress response handling
crates/warp-core/src/trusted_runtime_host.rs, crates/warp-wasm/src/warp_kernel.rs, crates/warp-core/tests/*, docs/spec/canonical-inbox-sequencing.md, CHANGELOG.md
Host and WASM paths handle inherited results without treating them as accepted submissions. Tests cover ancestry, conflicts, restart, and existing disposition handling. The specification and changelog describe the inheritance rules.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Feature · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35350

Strands now recognize occurrences that were already decided in their fork history. Redelivered occurrences report the original submission instead of being admitted again. The remaining issue is efficiency: admission checks walk the strand list repeatedly, which could slow ingestion when there are many strands. The change is mergeable with that follow-up in mind.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35350

Inherited retries remain non-writing outcomes, conflicting bindings are rejected, and incomplete ancestry blocks admission. No introduced security defect was verified. External exposure of the additional provenance and deployment compatibility remain unestablished.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected authority is admission and correlation within a runtime's worldline ancestry. Direct Rust callers can receive ancestor head, fork-basis and receipt references; the inspected WASM adapter returns only submission identity and generation. The evidence does not establish whether full dispositions cross a tenant or network authorization boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Presenting an inherited occurrence key alone does not produce a successful inherited result. Recognition also requires the original ingress identity and matching occurrence material; conflicting reuse returns ContinuumOccurrenceConflict. The ordinary intent path retains its contract-inverse admission restriction before the new lookup.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inherited decision proof uses copied tick attribution, or bounded ancestor receipt correlation for unattributed ticks. Ancestor admission-coverage checks and missing-envelope errors prevent incomplete restored knowledge from being treated as permission for a new occurrence.

Review of #890 and the owner's conditions for it:

- A fork basis older than attribution added nothing to the inherited set, so
a child could admit an occurrence its legacy prefix decided. The prefix now
proves a decision through the runtime ingress event node its tick created
(matched by head id, because forking rewrites copied heads onto the
child); a bound request with no event node in the copied state was not
decided there; one with a node but no tick evidence obstructs.
- A strand registered through register_strand has no recorded prefix and was
read as an empty past. Occurrence admission on it now obstructs.
- InheritedThrough is re-exported with InheritedSubmission.
- New test for the owner's conditions: an inherited decision stays the same
however the parent advances, a parent decision made after the fork (even
for a request pending at the basis) does not leak, and redelivery changes
no retained receipt on either lane.

# Conflicts:

Following the #888 rework, a fork basis older than attribution no longer
infers decisions from runtime ingress event nodes. A bound submission counts
as inherited from such a prefix only when its receipt correlation (the
decision log the trusted host attests complete) lies on the ancestor at or
before the last tick the child inherits; the cap is the minimum fork tick
along the ancestor walk. Without a correlation it was not decided.

Witness a_legacy_prefix_counts_only_correlated_decisions_within_the_cap fails
with correlations ignored and passes now.

Review of #890: register_strand accepted a second strand id and fork basis
for an existing child worldline, and lookups then chose one relation by
strand id order. The chosen basis could disagree with the child's recorded
prefix and let an inherited occurrence be admitted again. The registry now
refuses it with StrandError::ChildWorldlineAlreadyRelated.

Witness a_child_worldline_cannot_belong_to_two_strands fails without the
check and passes now.

Review of #890: a strand forked from a registered-only strand has a
recorded prefix, so the missing-prefix guard passed, but the ancestry walk
then followed the registered-only relation upward and could admit again an
occurrence decided further up. The walk now requires every intermediate
child it follows to have recorded prefix evidence, and otherwise obstructs
with AdmissionCoverageUnestablished naming that worldline.

Witness an_unproven_intermediate_relation_obstructs_inheritance_through_it
fails without the check and passes now.

Review of #890: when a registered-only intermediate itself held the
occurrence binding, the walk returned its inherited result before reaching
the intermediate guard. Every strand relation in the ancestry is now checked
for recorded prefix evidence before any ancestor binding is read or
followed; the per-step guard is replaced by this pre-pass.

Witnesses an_unproven_intermediate_binding_is_not_trusted and
an_unproven_intermediate_relation_obstructs_inheritance_through_it both fail
without the pre-pass and pass now. #901 records the underlying question of
register_strand asserting lineage without fork evidence.
