Review mirror of the upstream PR on GeiserX/CashPilot, for CodeRabbit. Fixes land on the upstream PR.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Copies stopped by a traffic cap now retry starting when the cap is lifted and their box reports in.
    • If a restart fails, the copy remains eligible for another attempt on a later heartbeat.
    • Copies are not restarted while the cap still applies or while they are already running.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that copies on offline boxes start when those boxes next report after a cap is lifted.

When a cap reset or a cap change lifted the stop, each copy the cap had
stopped was started once. If its box was offline at that moment, the start
failed and nothing tried again: the copy stayed stopped, marked as stopped
by the cap, until the next reset.

Each heartbeat now starts the copies of that box that are still marked and
not running, once the proxy is no longer capped. The same mark is set when a
stop lands, the cap is lifted meanwhile, and the start back up fails.

Walkthrough

Proxy-cap recovery now retains cap-stopped markers when a restart fails. On a later heartbeat, the system retries eligible stopped copies if the proxy is uncapped. The documentation and tests cover retry behavior and its conditions.

Changes: Proxy-cap restart recovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retain failed cap-release starts
app/main.py, tests/test_proxies.py
A failed immediate restart keeps the copy marked as stopped by the cap. The log states that the next heartbeat will retry. A test covers a failed restart after a cap lift during an in-flight stop.
Retry eligible copies on heartbeat
app/main.py, tests/test_proxies.py, docs/proxies.md
When the proxy is uncapped, the heartbeat retries recorded copies marked as cap-stopped if they are not running or already starting. Tests cover successful retry and conditions that prevent a start. The documentation describes starting copies after an offline box reports.

Possibly related PRs

  • geiresx/CashPilot#11: Changes cap-stop marking and restarts a copy when the cap lifts during an in-flight stop. This PR retains the marker after a failed restart and retries on a heartbeat.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 70a46

Failed cap-release starts remain eligible for a later heartbeat retry. No merge-blocking issue was established; normal checks remain appropriate.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 70a46

The recovery checks restrict which copies can restart, but a restart already in progress can outlive a manual stop or a renewed traffic cap. The exposure is bounded to existing proxy copies; it does not establish unauthenticated access or arbitrary container execution.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new background restart can act on stale cap or owner-intent state. After its eligibility check, a manual stop can complete and clear the marker before the retry starts the copy again. Likewise, another heartbeat can recap the proxy before the remote start completes; the post-start cap check preserves the marker but does not undo that start. Immediate release had a similar gap before this PR, but heartbeat retries extend it into ongoing recovery. This can resume proxy traffic contrary to a completed owner stop or during a capped interval.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Each new retry targets an existing marked copy on the authenticated heartbeat worker. Multiple eligible copies may recover, and their traffic shares proxy-level cap state. The inspected path does not grant heartbeat status authority to start arbitrary unrecorded copies on other workers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported failure path is a stale recovery decision: an eligible retry passes preflight, an owner stop completes or the proxy becomes capped, and the previously authorized remote start then takes effect. No attacker is required for this interleaving. Deliberately influencing its heartbeat trigger requires accepted worker credentials and an eligible recorded copy; an unauthenticated exploit is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Heartbeat identity is authenticated before worker upsert and recovery processing. Confirmed workers must use their own key; the shared-key enrollment path is bounded separately. Owner commands require owner authorization, and worker start requests independently verify an API key. These controls remain in place around the new recovery caller.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Retained markers allow another heartbeat attempt after an HTTP failure, and capped heartbeats continue requesting stops for copies reported running. This provides eventual containment rather than atomic prevention of a stale start. Inspected tests cover serial recovery and eligibility guards using mocked worker calls; they do not demonstrate the concurrent transition behavior.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate all per-copy lifecycle producers through a shared operation identity or serialized state machine. Owner stop/removal and renewed caps should invalidate pending recovery, with completion reconciliation for remote operations that outlive cancellation or timeouts. Use the same idempotency mechanism for immediate release and heartbeat recovery.
