fix(worker): stop leaving other workers' probe logs on the host while Activity is off (mirror of GeiserX/CashPilot#633) - #28
Improved handling of leftover activity probes when Activity reporting is off and Docker is available. The worker now cleans them up without sampling a round and closes its client even if cleanup fails.
When Docker is unavailable, the worker skips probe cleanup and avoids creating an activity client.
With Activity off, _activity_cycle returned before its sweep, so the only
sweep was the one at worker start. A finished probe another worker left
after that (one that died and came back under a new id) stayed on the
host, and its Docker log keeps raw addresses. The cycle now checks Docker
first and, when Activity is off, runs the sweep without a round.
_activity_cycle checks Docker availability before Activity state. When Docker is available and Activity is disabled, it sweeps probes, closes the client, and skips round sampling.
The worker sweeps probes when Activity is disabled and Docker is available, then closes the client. Tests cover this path, the Docker-unavailable path, and the disabled initial cycle. They also verify that no round runs while Activity is disabled.
geiresx/CashPilot#1: Adds worker-specific probe identity and cross-worker sweep rules.
geiresx/CashPilot#12: Changes the age and state rules for removing other workers' probes.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 4efbb
Disabled cycles clean up stopped probes without sampling. No material merge risk was established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 4efbb
The change reduces leftover network-address logs without enabling Activity sampling. It reuses existing cleanup permissions and ownership checks, including protection for another worker’s running probes. Cleanup remains best effort; completion during shutdown or concurrent Docker operations has not been validated.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The cleanup scope is Activity-labelled probes visible through the worker’s configured Docker connection, potentially including probes from several workers sharing that daemon. The PR increases cleanup frequency while disabled, not Docker privileges or the set of eligible probe labels.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Probe ownership uses the worker client ID. Same-worker probes are removable regardless of state. Foreign labelled probes are removable only in created, exited, or dead states after 30 seconds; missing timestamps are treated as old. Running foreign probes are excluded, while unlabelled legacy probes are eligible only in stopped states. These predicates predate this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Cleanup is best effort rather than an erasure deadline: listing and removal failures are logged, already-removed containers count as success, and later cycles retry discovery. Shutdown cancels the Activity task; the code does not explicitly wait for thread-backed sweep completion before closing its client. This shutdown pattern already exists in startup cleanup, and restart provides another sweep opportunity.
