Four temp-file-then-move writers in src/ each hand-rolled what AtomicWrite already does. This PR addresses an internal finding (no issue to close): where upstream writes through writeFileAtomic, the port now does too.

Upstream check (tester-army/e2e)

  • cache/store.ts uses writeFileAtomic: switched FileStepCache.Write (sync, so it uses the sync twin added by fix(tests): make the E2E.Tests Windows-only failures pass #605).
  • expect/screenshot.ts uses writeFileAtomic(stored.file, encodePng(settled)): switched ScreenshotAssertion.
  • AI trace: upstream runner.ts writes ai-trace.json via writeJsonReport, which is writeFileAtomic: switched AiTraceRecorder's flush.
  • oauth/store.ts is hand-rolled on purpose (advisory lock, mode 0600 at create plus chmod, renameSync): left CredentialStore alone.
  • E2E.Mobile.DevFlow DevFlowDeviceClient.WriteAsync: .NET-only (no upstream counterpart), and E2E.Mobile.DevFlow has no InternalsVisibleTo access to the internal AtomicWrite: left.

New symbols

No .NET-only symbols. No user-visible change, so no SKILL.md/docs/COMPATIBILITY.md edits.

Notes

  • Merged with main after fix(tests): make the E2E.Tests Windows-only failures pass #605: its sync twin and bounded Windows rename retry are the single implementation, and the new byte[] overload of WriteFileAtomicAsync shares that retry (the string overload delegates to it). FileCacheStoreConcurrentWriteTests is covered by fix(tests): make the E2E.Tests Windows-only failures pass #605.
  • Upstream's mode option (0600 on the cache file) is not ported; the port never set a mode on those files, so behavior is unchanged.
  • Real-model tests not run: agent behavior is unchanged (file writing only). The other E2E.Tests cache/screenshot/AI-trace tests pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Screenshot and trace files are now saved more reliably, reducing the risk of incomplete files if a write is interrupted.
    • Screenshot and trace output is handled consistently, helping preserve the expected file contents during updates.

Walkthrough

AtomicWrite adds a byte-array asynchronous write overload. Screenshot and trace file-writing code now uses the shared atomic-write methods.

Changes: Atomic file writes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared write methods
src/E2E/Internal/AtomicWrite.cs
The string asynchronous overload encodes content as UTF-8 and delegates to a new byte-array overload. The byte-array overload writes the supplied bytes through the existing temporary-file and replacement flow.
Migrate file-writing call sites
src/E2E/Expect/ScreenshotAssertion.cs, src/E2E/Internal/AiTrace.cs
KeepAsync and TraceFile.Flush now use AtomicWrite for file replacement. TraceFile.Flush retains its dirty-state reset and timestamp update.

Possibly related PRs

  • hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#605: Both changes modify AtomicWrite; PR #605 adds Windows move retries, while this PR adds a byte-array asynchronous overload and migrates screenshot and trace writes.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 18063

The atomic-write changes are mergeable with normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 1b465

Centralizing file replacement preserves existing destinations, payload formats, and access boundaries. No material security regression was identified in the changed write paths.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed operations remain filesystem writes to existing cache, screenshot, trace, and shared-writer destinations under the process's existing filesystem authority. The comparison does not show a new privileged sink, broader destination selection, or additional cross-service reachability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The helper does not acquire authority or reinterpret payload contents: it writes caller-provided content to a random sibling temporary path and replaces the caller-selected destination. Cache path construction still rejects keys containing anything other than ASCII letters and digits.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Failure cleanup is best-effort, and abrupt termination can bypass it. Neither revision establishes durable publication through an explicit disk flush or recovery journal. These are pre-existing limits, not newly introduced security guarantees or regressions; actual durability depends on the runtime filesystem.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the three changed write paths (cache, screenshot, AI trace files) and the shared mechanism (AtomicWrite). The raw summary and PR objectives both confirm these are the main changes: FileStepCache.Write, ScreenshotAssertion, and AiTraceRecorder/TraceFile.Flush now use AtomicWrite. The title is specific and matches the changeset.

Full details: Upstream Parity

Explanation

Pass. The current PR range changes only the screenshot and AI-trace callers and adds the byte overload in src/E2E/Internal/AtomicWrite.cs. The PR report maps these to upstream writeFileAtomic in internal/atomic-write.ts, and COMPATIBILITY.md records the same mapping. No tests, public API, or documentation changes are introduced. Direct upstream source was not available, so this assessment uses the authored upstream mapping and the compatibility record. Prior failure addressed: The current head has no DeleteQuietly symbol. Both async and sync cleanup are inline in AtomicWrite.cs; the prior failing implementation had been replaced before the reviewed head.

Keep main's AtomicWrite sync twin and Windows rename retry as the single
implementation; the byte[] overload of WriteFileAtomicAsync shares the retry path.
