fix(tests): make the E2E.Tests Windows-only failures pass - #605
A full dotnet test tests/E2E.Tests on Windows failed four tests that pass on Linux and macOS. Each had a Windows-only cause:
TraceStore.FileCacheStoreConcurrentWriteTests.Two_writers_on_one_key_leave_one_whole_entry_and_no_temp_file failed inside FileStepCache.Write with UnauthorizedAccessException from File.Move(temp, path, overwrite: true). A POSIX rename(2) replaces the target in one step, so two writers racing on one key end with last-write-wins, which upstream's cache/store.ts names as the intended outcome. Windows' MoveFileEx(MOVEFILE_REPLACE_EXISTING) instead fails with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED while another move is replacing the same target (and with ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION while a reader holds it open), so the losing writers threw. Both states pass in a moment. AtomicWrite (upstream's internal/atomic-write.ts) now retries exactly those two Windows errors up to ten times with a growing pause (about 90 ms in all) before the failure is the writer's; the async twin waits with Task.Delay on the caller's token. FileStepCache.Write now goes through the new synchronous twin AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic (upstream's writeFileAtomicSync), as upstream's store goes through writeFileAtomic, instead of keeping its own copy of the temp-and-move. The product already swallowed this exception in E2ESession.Flush ("the cache is disposable"), so for a user it showed as a lost recording (NotWritten), not a crash; the retry restores the last-write-wins upstream documents.
Vcs.DetectVcsTests.Reads_the_commit_and_branch_of_a_git_checkout… and ReportParts.ReportPartsTests.Reads_the_repository_at_cwd_when_the_parent_points_git_elsewhere failed in their finally with UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path '<object hash>' is denied. Git writes its loose objects read-only, and on Windows Directory.Delete(recursive: true) refuses a read-only file. Upstream's tests remove the repository with rmSync(dir, { recursive: true, force: true }), which clears that itself. The port's GitRepo helper (upstream's tests/helpers/git-repo.ts) gains RemoveRepo, which clears the attribute on every file and then deletes; both tests use it.
AgentObservation.DisambiguatingAttributesTests.Renders_the_selected_text_of_a_focused_field_verbatim… compared "\n" against "\r\n". SnapshotText.Render breaks lines with Environment.NewLine, while the value two\nlines keeps its own "\n"; the test's Lines helper split on Environment.NewLine alone, so on Windows the value's newline did not start a new line as it does on Linux and in upstream's split('\n'). The helper now splits on both "\r\n" and "\n".
The report also named HungPage…Keeps_the_reason_Playwright_gives_for_a_tap… as failing under load. In my runs that test passed every time; CdpRecovery.CdpSessionRecoveryTests.Counts_reconnect_time_against_the_operation_budget failed once in the first full run (navigate: Timeout 750ms exceeded, with a 1 s action timeout) and passed in the second. Both are timing flakes under load with no ordering or bound defect in the test, so they are left alone.
Minor decisions
The concurrent-write fix is in the product (AtomicWrite), not the test: the test is .NET-only and asserts the outcome upstream's store documents; tolerating the loser's exception in the test would hide that a Windows writer loses its recording.
The retry is Windows-only and limited to ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED and ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION by HResult, so a missing directory or disk-full fails at once; a denial that lasts (read-only target) reports the same error after about 90 ms.
The two twins keep their own loop and cleanup block, as upstream's writeFileAtomic and writeFileAtomicSync do; the retry predicate (RetriesMove) and temp-name builder (TemporaryPath, upstream's temporaryPath) are shared.
RemoveRepo lives on GitRepo because only git repositories leave read-only files behind in these tests; tests/E2E.Cli.Tests creates no repositories, so no cross-project helper was needed.
Other temp-and-move sites (ScreenshotAssertion, AiTrace, CredentialStore, DevFlowDeviceClient.Capture) still call File.Move directly. None failed, so they are not touched here; they are candidates to route through AtomicWrite in a follow-up.
Docs
Upstream's docs/cache.mdx ("Share the cache across checkouts") says parallel runs can share the directory because each write replaces its file atomically and the last write wins; upstream's skill reference (running.md, "The replay cache") says worktrees can share one directory. The port's equivalents now carry that sentence plus the Windows retry: skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md ("The replay cache"), the README's cache.dir paragraph (the port's docs/ has no cache page; docs/index.md links to the README), and COMPATIBILITY.md ("Replay cache": FileStepCache.Write → AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic, last-write-wins, the Windows-only retry and its observable effect, Saved where NotWritten was, and the .NET-only names; "Report document": the synchronous twin is now ported).
AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic maps to upstream's writeFileAtomicSync; AtomicWrite.TemporaryPath to temporaryPath.
AtomicWrite.MoveAttempts, AccessDenied, SharingViolation, RetriesMove, Utf8: the Windows rename-replace behavior described above, which Node's rename shares but upstream does not run into on POSIX.
GitRepo.RemoveRepo: test fixture; the .NET equivalent of upstream's rmSync(..., { recursive: true, force: true }).
Tests
dotnet build E2E.slnx: clean.
dotnet test tests/E2E.Tests on Windows: 2127 passed, 0 failed (before: 5 failed).
The four fixed classes rerun 3 + 2 times; FileCacheStoreConcurrentWriteTests rerun 20 + 20 times: all passed.
dotnet test E2E.slnx --filter "TestCategory=RealModel" (GitHub Copilot login): E2E.Agent.Tests 17 passed, E2E.Sample, E2E.XUnit.V3.Sample, E2E.NUnit.Tests passed. MobileApp.E2ETests could not start on this machine (agent-device needs Node 22.12 or newer, and node --version reported v20.16.0), unrelated to this change. samples/TodoMvc is outside the solution and restores the published E2E 0.1.5 package (restore fails under warnings-as-errors with NU1603), so it does not exercise this code.
Four E2E.Tests failed only on Windows:
- FileCacheStoreConcurrentWriteTests: Windows refuses a move over a file
another move is replacing (ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED), so forty writers on one
cache key made the losers throw. AtomicWrite now retries such a move
briefly, and FileStepCache.Write goes through its synchronous twin,
WriteFileAtomic (upstream's writeFileAtomicSync), instead of its own copy.
- DetectVcsTests and ReportPartsTests: Directory.Delete refuses git's
read-only object files on Windows. GitRepo.RemoveRepo clears the attribute
first, as upstream's rmSync(force) does.
- DisambiguatingAttributesTests: the rendered text breaks lines with "\r\n"
on Windows while a value's own newline is "\n"; the Lines helper splits on
both, as upstream's split on "\n" does.

AtomicWrite adds synchronous atomic writes and retries qualifying Windows move failures. FileStepCache.Write uses the synchronous method. Cache documentation describes atomic replacement and concurrent-write behavior. Tests use a repository cleanup helper that resets file and directory attributes before deletion.
The asynchronous method now retries qualifying Windows move failures. A synchronous method uses the same retry limit and delay schedule. Both methods use shared helpers.

Add the cache-write guidance to SKILL.md before merging, or accept this bounded documentation gap as a follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to b73c8
The change adds bounded Windows retries without expanding write destinations or privileges. Cache validation and whole-file replacement remain intact, and no material security regression was identified.

No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed production behavior affects cache and report files writable by the hosting process. The inspected changes retain caller-selected destinations and do not introduce a new principal or privilege transition. Contention can extend qualifying Windows operations by the bounded retry delay.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Cache keys remain restricted to nonempty ASCII letters and digits before path construction. Retry handling neither changes the destination nor bypasses filesystem authorization: only two exact Windows failure codes qualify, and a persistent failure is rethrown after the attempt limit.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Ordinary write failures and asynchronous cancellation during writing or retry delay reach best-effort temporary-file deletion and are rethrown. Cleanup suppresses I/O and authorization failures, so it does not guarantee removal when deletion is denied or the process terminates abruptly. Best-effort cleanup predates this PR.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #606 is directly linked and open. Its requirements are documentation updates and a naming rule. The documentation items are non-coding. The coding requirement is the rule that every new src/ symbol maps to an upstream symbol or is named as .NET-only with a reason in the PR report.
Symbol mapping: The PR report maps AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic to writeFileAtomicSync and AtomicWrite.TemporaryPath to temporaryPath. It names AtomicWrite.MoveAttempts, AccessDenied, SharingViolation, RetriesMove, Utf8, and GitRepo.RemoveRepo as .NET-only, with reasons. These cover the new src/ and test-fixture symbols in the change summary (src/E2E/Internal/AtomicWrite.cs, tests/E2E.Tests/GitRepo.cs).
Documentation: The change summary shows edits to COMPATIBILITY.md, README.md, and skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md. The base-to-head diff for skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md is empty, and the diff for docs/ is empty. The PR description says the port's docs/ has no cache page. SKILL.md has no cache-write behavior statement to mirror; it routes the replay cache topic to agent.md and running.md. The issue names SKILL.md literally, and the PR description does not explain why it was left unchanged.
Unverified: Upstream text (docs/cache.mdx, cache/store.ts, running.md) cited in the PR description is not in this repository. Those claims cannot be checked here.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed paths serve the PR's stated purpose: fixing four Windows-only E2E.Tests failures, with matching documentation.
src/E2E/Cache/StepCache.cs: FileStepCache.Write delegates to AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic. This replaces the inline temp-and-move code.
src/E2E/Internal/AtomicWrite.cs: Adds Windows-only retry for ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED and ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION, and the synchronous twin. Both are required by the concurrent-write fix described in the PR.
tests/E2E.Tests/GitRepo.cs, DetectVcsTests.cs, ReportPartsTests.cs: RemoveRepo clears read-only attributes. The two tests call it. This addresses the cleanup failures.
AgentObservation test helper: splits on both "\r\n" and "\n". This addresses the newline failure.
FileCacheStoreConcurrentWriteTests.cs: XML comment update only. No executable code changed.
COMPATIBILITY.md, README.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md: documentation for the cache behavior and .NET-only symbols. This is the scope of issue #606.
The PR states that other temp-and-move sites are not changed. No unrelated change appears in the change summary.
Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
Point 4 remains unresolved. The PR changes the user-visible cache-write behavior: FileStepCache.Write now calls AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic, and Windows move retries affect the upstream FileCacheStore.write behavior. The PR updates COMPATIBILITY.md, README.md, and skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md, but the authoritative diff shows no change to skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md or any docs/ file. Those required documentation updates are therefore missing.
Resolution
Update skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md and the relevant docs/ files with the upstream cache-write behavior in C# names, including atomic replacement, concurrent-write last-write-wins behavior, and the Windows retry behavior. Keep the existing COMPATIBILITY.md mapping and include the documentation changes in this PR.

Mirror upstream's cache docs (parallel runs share the directory, each
write replaces its file atomically, the last write wins) in the skill
reference, the README, and COMPATIBILITY.md, with the Windows-only retry
this branch adds, its observable effect (Saved where NotWritten was), and
the .NET-only names. The synchronous AtomicWrite twin is no longer listed
as not ported; it is used because IStepCache.Write is synchronous, where
upstream's store awaits writeFileAtomic. Correct the concurrent-write
test's reason for having no upstream it, and make GitRepo.RemoveRepo clear
directory attributes too.
Closes#606
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
On the "Upstream Parity" pre-merge check (point 4, the undocumented cache-write behavior):
Verified against upstream: docs/cache.mdx ("Share the cache across checkouts") says parallel runs can share the directory because each write replaces its file atomically and the last write wins; cache/store.ts documents last-write-wins for two writers on one key; skills/e2e/references/running.md says worktrees can share one directory.
The port's equivalents now mirror that, in C# names, plus the Windows retry this PR adds:
skills/e2e-dotnet/references/running.md, "The replay cache".
README, the cache.dir / E2E_CACHE_DIR paragraph (the port's docs/ has no cache page; docs/index.md links to the README).
COMPATIBILITY.md, "Replay cache": FileStepCache.Write is FileCacheStore.write, writing through AtomicWrite.WriteFileAtomic (writeFileAtomicSync); last write wins; the Windows-only difference (upstream's rename does not retry, the port retries ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED / ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION up to ten times over about 90 ms), its observable effect (Saved where NotWritten was), and the .NET-only names MoveAttempts, AccessDenied, SharingViolation, RetriesMove, Utf8, TemporaryPath. "Report document" no longer lists the synchronous twin as not ported.
The PR description lists the same .NET-only symbols with their reasons.
