Rewrite text downloads through the secret ledger (#682) - #722
A test that downloads a text file after filling a secret used to keep the file exactly as the app served it, so the secret could sit in plain text under the results folder, and the report labelled it incomplete. Now the runner rewrites a text download (text/* or application/json) through the secret ledger before it is measured, and the report labels it complete. Binary files, files that are not UTF-8, and sessions with no secret stay as served and incomplete. Ports upstream's download redaction in run/artifacts.ts.
Not ported: both download its of filled-secrets.test.ts (no credentials config, runner fixtures or store) and the download case of engine-secrets.test.ts (an engine option does not add its value to the redaction list).
Verification
E2E.Tests non-RealModel: 2346 passed. Full RealModel run: all passed except MobileApp.E2ETests (9 failed; needs a device).
/code-review run; the one actionable finding (case-sensitive extension match) is fixed. The others match upstream's narrow isTextLike and mediaTypeFor.
Docs: COMPATIBILITY.md, skills/e2e-dotnet/references/writing-tests.md, XML doc on Browser.WaitForDownloadAsync. Generated API pages are not regenerated.
Text downloads, including JSON, are rescanned before reporting against all secrets known at that point, including secrets registered after attachment. Matching values, fragments, and encoded forms—including ASCII characters represented with JSON Unicode escapes—are replaced with <secret:name>. UTF-8 byte order marks are preserved.
Successfully scanned text downloads are reported as complete, even when no replacement is needed.
Compatibility
Binary files, files that cannot be decoded as UTF-8, and downloads from sessions without secrets remain unchanged and are reported as incomplete.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Eligible text downloads are rescanned before reporting with the current secret ledger. The change supports JSON Unicode-escaped ASCII secrets, records redaction completeness, and leaves ineligible downloads unchanged. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors.

Summary
Identify and rewrite text downloads src/E2E/Internal/Redactor.cs, src/E2E/Run/Secrecy.cs, src/E2E/Run/ArtifactPaths.cs
The redactor matches ASCII secrets represented with JSON Unicode escapes. ArtifactPaths maps media types, identifies text-like files, and scans UTF-8 downloads. Successful scans return Complete; NUL bytes and specified I/O, access, decoding, or regex-timeout failures return Incomplete.
AttemptScope stores redaction metadata and rescans text-like downloads when attachments are read. E2ESession supplies the attempt directory. Tests and documentation cover later-registered secrets, escaped forms, and ineligible downloads.
Carry redaction status into reports src/E2E/Report/ReportRecords.cs, src/E2E/Run/AttemptReport.cs, src/E2E/Report/ReportWire.cs
AttemptReport copies attachment redaction metadata into ReportArtifact. ReportWire uses an explicit redaction claim when determining completeness; without one, only log artifacts with valid paths are complete.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to d8b9d
Text downloads that contain only the JSON Unicode-escaped form of a partial secret fragment can still be reported as completely redacted. Escape-aware fragment matching should be added before merge, or such downloads should be left incomplete.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to d8b9d
Text-download protection improves, including for secrets registered later in a session. However, encoded secret fragments can remain in a download that is labeled completely redacted. The demonstrated risk concerns confidentiality and trust in that label, not broader filesystem privileges or cross-session access.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: A successful UTF-8 scan is promoted to complete redaction even when escaped secret fragments survive. The escaped matcher represents complete registered values, while fragment scanning compares literal fragment keys without decoding Unicode escapes. An app-controlled download can therefore retain an escaped eight-character fragment of a longer registered secret and receive a complete label. The matcher limitation and possible residual bytes predate this PR; the newly weakened guarantee is the download’s completeness classification.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is scoped to registered secret material represented in an affected session’s downloads and accessible to readers of those files. An app controlling download content can choose an evasive representation without runner-administration privileges. The trace does not establish access to unrelated sessions, data stores, or additional credentials.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — For a longer registered value, an eight-character fragment written using JSON Unicode escapes need not match either the complete-value escaped pattern or the literal fragment index. Successful decoding still yields Complete, which reaches the report. Repeating the final scan does not correct this deterministic representation gap.
observed — Counterevidence limits the failure: complete ASCII Unicode-escaped values, mixed literal and escaped values, nested JSON whole values, ordinary fragments, and base64 forms have explicit test coverage. These cases do not establish escaped partial-fragment coverage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The built-in engine sanitizes app-suggested filenames and creates generated paths under downloads before saving. This limits app-controlled filesystem reachability. AttachArtifact itself combines the supplied path with the attempt directory without a separate containment check, leaving custom-engine path trust as an unresolved assumption rather than a demonstrated external escape.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Save failure or cancellation before BrowserDownload returns skips attachment registration, and reporting enumerates registered attachments rather than every file in the directory. This limits report inclusion, but cleanup and external collection of any untracked partial files were not established; that uncertainty is not evidence of a newly introduced exposure.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a shared representation-coverage contract for whole-value and fragment scanning, and make the reported completeness guarantee match that contract. Escaped partial-fragment cases should be validated through both stored bytes and serialized status; unsupported representations should not receive an unqualified completeness guarantee.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #682 requires text-like downloads to pass through the secret ledger before hashing and to report the redaction result. The changes implement this for text/* and application/json, preserve binary and invalid text downloads, and propagate Complete or Incomplete to the report. DownloadRedactionTests cover rewriting, later secret registration, encoded values, BOM handling, failure fallback, and unchanged unsupported files. The omitted upstream cases require .NET infrastructure that this port does not provide.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production changes support #682 through media-type detection, download redaction, artifact status propagation, and report propagation. The tests and documentation describe and verify this behavior. No unrelated change is established.
Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
Upstream parity still fails on points 2, 3, and 4. Point 2: tests/E2E.Tests/ArtifactStore/DownloadRedactionTests.cs ports the artifact-store tests, and COMPATIBILITY.md lists skips for filled-secrets.test.ts and engine-secrets.test.ts, but it does not port or explicitly skip the two upstream download tests from trace-secrets.test.ts. Point 3: src/E2E/Run/ArtifactPaths.cs:MediaTypeFor uses OrdinalIgnoreCase for every extension, including .csv and .htm; the PR describes this behavior but does not name it as .NET-only. Point 4: skills/e2e-dotnet/SKILL.md, the web guide, and COMPATIBILITY.md were updated, but docs-site/src/content/docs/api/E2E/Browser.md still has the old WaitForDownloadAsync documentation although src/E2E/Run/Browser.cs changed its public XML documentation. The upstream checkout is unavailable, so these upstream comparisons could not be independently re-read.
Resolution
Port the two exact trace-secrets.test.ts download tests with all assertions, or list each exact test and its skip reason. Either match upstream extension matching or explicitly mark case-insensitive matching as .NET-only in the PR description and compatibility record. Regenerate and commit the Browser.WaitForDownloadAsync API documentation after the XML documentation change.

Add a complete-download assertion through AttemptReport.Build.
Attributes_a_download... reaches the production report path, but it checks only an incomplete download. That assertion does not protect the new copy: when ReportArtifact.Redaction is absent, ReportWire.Artifact still reports a download as incomplete. The new tests check complete downloads only through Record, which supplies attached.Redaction directly. Add a complete download to the existing integration test, or add a focused equivalent, and assert the generated report or wire record is complete.

Bound text download redaction before reading the whole file.
WaitForDownloadAsync saves the download, then AttachArtifact calls RedactDownload when the ledger is non-empty and the media type is text-like. RedactDownload allocates the complete byte array, decoded string, and redacted result. No size check limits this path. A sufficiently large CSV or text download can exhaust the runner's memory. The base report digest streams the file, so it does not prevent this new allocation path.
Add a size bound before File.ReadAllBytes and leave oversized downloads Incomplete, or implement redaction as a bounded streaming operation.

Addressed in the latest push: .htm now matches case-insensitively, like the other extensions.
Not changed:
Size bound on RedactDownload: upstream's redactDownload reads and rewrites the whole file with no bound, and a bound here would leave a large text download unredacted and incomplete. Keeping parity.
Extra complete-download assertion through AttemptReport.Build: skipped for now; the wire label is covered by the new DownloadRedactionTests.
The restore-build-test failure is CdpSessionRecoveryTests.Counts_reconnect_time_against_the_operation_budget, a timing test this change does not touch.

Do not mark UTF-16LE downloads complete without redaction.
A BOM-less UTF-16LE CSV containing an ASCII secret also decodes as UTF-8: each character is followed by NUL. RedactFragments does not match the secret across those NULs, so the artifact retains the secret but is reported as complete. An app that controls the download can supply this encoding.
Detect this case and leave it Incomplete, or decode and redact it with the correct encoding.

Redact Unicode-escaped ASCII secrets in JSON downloads.
For a registered secret abcdefgh, a JSON download containing "abcdefgh" passes UTF-8 decoding. RedactFragments does not match these escapes because Spellings only includes the literal form of ASCII letters. The file retains the secret, but the report marks it complete.

Redact Unicode-escaped fragments before reporting completion._fragmentPattern matches complete values, while RewriteFragments matches only literal fragments. Therefore, ABCDEF12 can preserve ABCDEF12, and RedactDownload still reports Complete.
