Port app.identity, app.environment, launchArguments and permissions (#695) - #759
Until now the .NET config rejected app.identity, app.environment, app.launchArguments and app.permissions, and the replay cache keyed on a constant app identity, so an app at another URL shared entries. This ports those keys, the resolved identity, environment and site of the app, and keys the cache by identity + environment as upstream's targetIdentity does.
AppConfig gains Identity, Environment, LaunchArguments, Permissions (AppPermissionState enum); E2EConfig reads and checks them (device targets take all four, Windows takes no permissions, web takes identity/environment).
ResolvedApp gains Site, Environment, Identity, BundleId, AppPath, LaunchArguments, Permissions. Urls.SiteOf / Urls.IsImplicitTestHost are upstream's siteOf / isImplicitTestHost. The identity keeps the declared :0.
Sessions.TargetIdentity is upstream's targetIdentity; E2EFixture passes its digest as E2ESessionOptions.AppIdentity and the agent's cache key uses it. Recordings made before this miss as no-entry and must be re-recorded.
MobileTargetEngine, MobileAppHost and WinAppHost hand LaunchArguments / Permissions to the engine app.
TargetApps.DigestTargetApp and Command.DigestCommand are upstream's digestTargetApp / digestCommand.
Docs: SKILL.md, references (setup, mobile, windows), COMPATIBILITY.md, API pages for AppConfig and AppPermissionState.
Minor decisions
Web app.permissions is refused as not supported (the port does not grant browser permissions yet). Web launchArguments is an unknown key, like bundleId.
The report's run.targets[].environment stays test (noted in COMPATIBILITY.md).
engineAppInfo / EngineAppInfo not ported: port engines are built from the target.
Explore and MCP sessions run with the cache off, so they do not pass AppIdentity.
.NET-only symbols
E2ESessionOptions.AppIdentity, AttemptScope.AppIdentity (replaces the constant CacheAppIdentity): options plumbing, since the port has no ResolvedTarget in the session.
MobileTargetEngine.DevicePermissionsOf (public): maps config permission names to DevicePermission (upstream assertPermissions), shared by the adapters.
AppPermissionState is a C# enum for upstream's string union.
Tests
Ported: TargetIdentity/TargetIdentityTests (the six pinned digests); Config/ResolveConfigTests: environment default, identity keys, site; the first AnAppUrlOnAFreePort test is now full.
Partial (named Partial_): "checks the shape of every app field" (messages say targets[0].app.x; no engine to be missing), "digests the app a target declares" and the second app-ports test (the port has no config digest).
Not ported: project id describe of target-identity.test.ts (no projectId); "hands the declaration to the engine's validateApp".
Fixed TraceCacheStrictCacheFails..., which hard-coded the old empty-app digest.
Ran the full non-RealModel suite, then RealModel. E2E.Tests: 2401 of 2403 passed. One failure was the setup.md Contents check (my miss, fixed in the last commit, passes now). The other was a HungPage/Playwright timing test; a different case of it fails on each run. Mobile.Tests has 58 failures (CRLF capture snapshots, Windows path separators) that this change does not touch. RealModel: E2E.Sample, E2E.Agent.Tests (17) and E2E.NUnit.Tests (1) pass; TodoMvc cannot restore the unpublished 0.1.5 package.
Upstream parity
Sessions.TargetIdentity overlaps the follow-up #756/#757; it should not be duplicated there.
Upstream: config/app.ts, run/sessions.tstargetIdentity, tests/unit/target-identity.test.ts, tests/unit/config.test.ts, tests/unit/app-ports.test.ts (no single commit; scope from the issue).
ported: keys, resolved fields, site/environment/identity, targetIdentity, digestTargetApp/digestCommand, the named config tests and the 6 identity cases.
Added app identity and environment settings to distinguish replay-cache entries across app configurations. Apps whose cache identity changes need to be recorded again; old entries are not migrated.
Added launch arguments for mobile and Windows apps, and configurable permission states for mobile apps.
Bug Fixes
Added validation for environment values, launch arguments, and mobile permission names, with suggestions for unrecognized permissions. Web and Windows apps do not support permission settings.
Documentation
Expanded configuration, platform, API, and replay-cache guidance, and added redirects for API documentation pages.
App configuration now supports identity, environment, launch arguments, and mobile permissions. Resolved app identity and environment contribute to replay-cache and session identities. Mobile and Windows target engines pass configured launch arguments to app options.
Configuration parsing validates app identity, environment, launch arguments, and permissions. Resolution derives site, environment, and identity, and creates app and command digests. Tests cover defaults, validation, identity precedence, digest behavior, and port assignment. Documentation describes the added fields and their resolution.
Cache and session identity src/E2E/Agent/Agent.cs, src/E2E/Run/*, tests/E2E.Tests/TargetIdentity/*, tests/E2E.Tests/TraceCacheReplay/*, COMPATIBILITY.md
Resolved app identity and environment feed cache keys and session target identities. Fixture setup resolves the app identity and passes it into the session. Tests cover target identity and the updated default environment digest.
Mobile and Windows target engines pass launch arguments to app options. Mobile permission states map to device permissions, and unknown names produce INVALID_CONFIG. Documentation describes the API and platform-specific configuration.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#647 — The change adds app identity, environment, launch-argument, and permission configuration, and passes supported options to mobile and Windows targets.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#645 — The change resolves app identity from the declared URL or explicit identity, including URLs with port 0.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#740 — Web permissions remain unsupported, so browser permission grants are not implemented.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#705 — The change adds Sessions.TargetIdentity; the issue’s other session-store items are outside this change.
Possibly related PRs
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#699 — This change extends app resolution with identity, environment, launch arguments, permissions, and an app-settings digest.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#707 — This change adds Sessions.TargetIdentity and uses app identity and environment in that identity.
hardkoded/e2e-dotnet#621 — This change parses and forwards Windows launch arguments through the target engine and host.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f48d4
Merge with awareness: use explicit mobile relaunches and distinct identities where needed; the documentation also needs correction.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to f48d4
App-and-environment-specific cache keys improve replay isolation, and existing launch controls remain in place. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns device permission recovery after interrupted launches and behavior implemented outside this repository.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated sensitive outcomes are argument-controlled execution of the configured Windows application, permission changes for the named mobile app, and replay-cache selection. Configuration already selected commands and application builds, and mobile APIs already exposed permission changes. The new fields do not establish an independently attackable remote or tenant boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Windows launch arguments reach ProcessStartInfo.ArgumentList with UseShellExecute disabled, rather than being concatenated into a shell command. Mobile launch arguments and permission updates are serialized as structured device requests, and permission updates include the selected app identifier.
observed — Direct session callers may still omit AppIdentity and receive a shared test-environment fallback. This sharing assumption predates the PR. The inspected configured fixture supplies the digest; Explore and MCP omit it only while explicitly disabling replay caching.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Mobile permission mutations are sequential and precede launch. Failure or cancellation can leave earlier mutations applied, while repository-local session cleanup closes the device session without restoring permissions. These mechanics predate the PR, and repeated relaunches reapply the configured set. Whether daemon or provider cleanup restores device state remains unresolved.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — For shared-device use, define permission-state ownership and the provider cleanup contract explicitly, including recovery after partial updates and cancellation, before relying on app.permissions as an isolation guarantee.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#695] Requirements: port the keys app.identity, app.environment, app.launchArguments and app.permissions; resolve identity, environment (host default) and site; key the replay cache on identity and environment. Evidence in the whole-PR summary: E2EConfig.cs accepts the keys per target type and checks them. AppConfig carries Identity, Environment, LaunchArguments and Permissions. Urls.SiteOf and Urls.IsImplicitTestHost provide site and host-default environment. TargetApps.ResolveTargetApp populates ResolvedApp.Site, Environment and Identity. Sessions.TargetIdentity digests identity and environment. E2EFixture passes AppIdentity to E2ESessionOptions, and Agent.cs keys cache entries on AttemptScope.AppIdentity instead of the constant digest. MobileTargetEngine, MobileAppHost and WinAppHost pass launch arguments and permissions to the engine app. Tests cover the six pinned target identity digests, environment default, identity precedence, site derivation, and engine handoff. The issue scopes permissions to device targets, and the PR documents web permissions as unsupported. Remaining gaps are test-coverage items: three upstream tests are only partially ported (Partial_ tests), and the issue names them as upstream references. The PR states these gaps as justified exceptions. The core behavior requirements are implemented. Unverified in this review: the exact assertions of the Partial_ tests.
Full details: Upstream Parity
Explanation
Point 1 remains unresolved. The PR diff adds DefaultAppIdentity in src/E2E/Agent/Agent.cs and uses it as the fallback for AttemptScope.AppIdentity. CLAUDE.md requires every new field or constant in src/ to map to an upstream symbol, or for the PR report to name it as .NET-only with a reason. The PR’s .NET-only list names AttemptScope.AppIdentity, E2ESessionOptions.AppIdentity, DevicePermissionsOf, and AppPermissionState, but not DefaultAppIdentity. The PR and COMPATIBILITY.md identify Sessions.TargetIdentity as the upstream counterpart. No local upstream checkout or ref was available for independent source inspection.
Resolution
Remove DefaultAppIdentity and compute the { "environment": "test" } fallback digest inline, or name DefaultAppIdentity in the PR report as a .NET-only symbol and explain why .NET session plumbing requires the cached fallback.

Explanation
Confirmed at reviewed head: docs-site/public/api/E2E.AppConfig.html changes the canonical URL from https://hardkoded.github.io/e2e-dotnet/api/E2E/AppConfig/ to https://www.hardkoded.com/e2e-dotnet/api/E2E/AppConfig/. The redirect, refresh, and fallback lines are unchanged. This domain change has no connection to issue #695 or the PR's app configuration and cache objectives. The other API docs changes (AppConfig.md, AppPermissionState.md and the new AppPermissionState.html redirect) document the new public members and are in scope. The code changes (Urls, App, Command, Sessions, Agent, E2EFixture, engines and hosts) are each tied to #695 or to the documented exceptions.

The `appPath` is relative to the folder of `e2e.config.json`. `app.launchArguments` (an array of strings) and `app.permissions` (permission name to `grant`, `deny`, or `reset`, for example `{ "camera": "grant" }`) ride every fresh launch of the app: the arguments reach the app process (iOS) or `am start` (Android), and the permissions are set before the launch, so no system prompt appears. Clarify that reset can show a prompt.
The sentence says no system prompt appears for all three states. With reset, the OS can ask again when the app requests the permission. Distinguish reset from grant and deny.

Decide the BaseUrl override identity contract before changing the cache key.
When a fixture overrides BaseUrl, StartSessionAsync keeps the declared Identity. TargetApps.ResolveTargetApp uses that identity before the URL, so the replay-cache digest does not change with the override. If the override points to a different app with the same resolved environment, recordings from one app can replay against the other.
COMPATIBILITY.md says a fixture that overrides BaseUrl keys on that URL. skills/e2e-dotnet/references/setup.md says different apps need different identities. The comment at the same code location says the override is keyed "in the declared app's identity," so the repository states two different contracts. Confirm which one is intended. If overrides must key on the URL, the identity source for the override needs to change. If sharing the declared identity is intended, COMPATIBILITY.md needs to say so.

Apply pinned-app configuration to every fresh launch.
DeviceSession.OpenAppAsync gates _app.LaunchArguments and _app.Permissions on relaunch && app == PinnedApp. A reachable Device.OpenAppAsync or open_app call can omit Relaunch; if the pinned app is stopped, the call still starts it, but the configured permissions and launch arguments are omitted. This conflicts with the MobileOptions contract that applies them before every fresh launch. Preserve the existing foreground-only behavior, but apply the configuration when the pinned app is not running.
