Autobump stopped picking up new Ruby releases when 4.1.0-preview1 came out: bin/update-ruby-recipe added the entry, then bin/validate-recipes failed with 4.1.0-preview1 uses unknown series 4.1, so nothing was committed or pushed. Every later run hit the same failure, which is why there is no 4.0.8 build.

  • bin/update-ruby-recipe now appends "X.Y": {} to recipes/series.yml when a version belongs to a series that isn't listed, so a new minor (4.1, 4.2, ...) no longer needs a manual edit. Running it with 4.1.0-preview1 adds "4.1": {} and bin/validate-recipes passes.
  • Autobump now stages recipes/series.yml along with recipes/rubies.yml.
  • A new notify-failure job emails through Resend (using the existing RESEND_API_KEY and NOTIFY_EMAIL secrets) when autobump fails, so a stall like this doesn't go unnoticed.

After merging, run autobump once to get 4.0.8 built.

Fixes #69

Low Risk
Changes are limited to release automation scripts and CI; no runtime auth or application behavior is affected.

Overview
Fixes autobump stalling when a new minor Ruby line appears: bin/update-ruby-recipe now appends a default "X.Y": {} entry to recipes/series.yml for any series missing from the config, so bin/validate-recipes no longer fails on “unknown series” before a commit.

The autobump workflow now stages and commits recipes/series.yml together with recipes/rubies.yml for both stable and prerelease bumps.

Adds a notify-failure job that runs when autobump fails and sends a Resend email (using existing secrets), with a warning-only skip if secrets are unset.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Ruby recipe updates now automatically add previously unlisted series to the series configuration, while leaving existing series entries unchanged.
    • Automated recipe checks now include changes to both Ruby recipes and series configuration, and stage both files when committing updates.
  • Notifications
    • Failed automated updates can trigger an email with a link to the workflow run. Notifications are skipped when required settings are unavailable, and failed delivery attempts are retried.

📝 Walkthrough

The recipe updater now adds missing Ruby series to recipes/series.yml. Autobump checks stage changes to both recipe files. A failure notification job can send an email through Resend when autobump fails.

Changes: Ruby series updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Register missing series
libexec/update_ruby_recipe.rb
After updating a Ruby recipe, the updater checks recipes/series.yml and adds the recipe's series with an empty override map if it is absent.
Stage series updates

Stable and prerelease checks detect changes to recipes/rubies.yml or recipes/series.yml and stage both files.

Autobump failure notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Send failure notification
.github/workflows/autobump.yml
A job runs when autobump fails. It warns and exits successfully if either required secret is missing. Otherwise, it sends a Resend email with the workflow-run link and retries failed requests up to three times within a 60-second maximum retry time.

The change is mergeable with a narrow follow-up: rerunning the updater cannot repair an existing recipe whose series is missing, though the current recipe files do not have that mismatch.

Explanation

Issue #69 requires autobump to stop failing when a Ruby release introduces an unlisted series. The reviewed changes register a missing X.Y entry in recipes/series.yml, validate the recipes, and stage both recipe files before commit. These changes address the reported 4.1 failure. The post-merge autobump run is an operational step, not an unmet coding requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The workflow changes remain related to issue #69. Staging recipes/series.yml is required for the new series registration. The notify-failure job directly supports detection of future autobump failures and uses the existing notification secrets. No unrelated runtime or authentication changes are shown.

entry.fetch("series") before the early return so rerunning the updater registers
a missing series while preserving the return behavior.
