Summary

Layer B of the Rust estate baseline for leynos/axinite: make the development
build standard the repository default on pinned nightly-2026-10-16, and route
coverage, release and packaging, Docker, Whitaker, and MSRV builds away from it.
Bare Cargo builds and standard Make targets use the parallel rustc frontend
(-Zthreads=8) and, on Linux, the pinned mold linker. Cranelift is not
adopted; the exception and current evidence are below.

Resolves #396.

Train position

This is layer B and targets main; layer C, #402,
and the lint waves stack above it. This PR supersedes #427
(toolchain pin and Dependabot entry), #274
(canonical build target), and #325
(the retired opt-in dev-fast fragment). The supervisor will close those PRs
with pointers after this layer lands.

The first version of #398 put mold in Whitaker's RUSTFLAGS; the current
routes keep Whitaker at its literal RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" boundary, as
required by BD-008.

Cranelift exception

On nightly-2026-10-16 and x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu, Wasmtime 48.0.7
compiles with Cranelift; this resolves the earlier Wasmtime 48.0.6 asm!
limitation. The remaining axinite-specific blocker is panic unwinding, now
reproduced by the checked-in standalone probe at
tests/probes/cranelift-unwind/src/lib.rs.
The per-test outcomes are:

Test Cranelift test profile LLVM test profile
catch_unwind_catches Panic escaped catch_unwind (exit 101) Passed
spawned_thread_panic_is_join_error Aborted with SIGABRT and failed to initiate panic, error 5 (exit 101) Passed
should_panic_works Passed Passed
nested_drop_runs_during_unwind Panic escaped; drop marker was not emitted (exit 101) Passed; drop marker was emitted

All four LLVM controls pass. make test runs the probe once under LLVM,
outside the workspace feature matrix. The developer guide records the exact
Cranelift and LLVM commands, component, environment overrides, and per-test
results. This does not prove that the full workspace builds or passes tests
under Cranelift. The exception remains because this unwinding behaviour
threatens repository tests that catch panics, rely on destructors during
unwinding, or turn panicking tasks into errors. Revisit at
#461 in six months, or sooner
if Cranelift's unwind behaviour or the pinned toolchain changes.

Routing matrix

Build Frontend and linker Backend Mechanism
Bare Cargo, make build, typecheck, lint, tests -Zthreads=8; mold on Linux LLVM .cargo/config.toml
Coverage (cargo llvm-cov, generate-coverage, scripts/coverage.sh) None LLVM Step RUSTFLAGS: ''
Release and packaging (dist, cargo install, release WASM, scripts/build-*.sh) None LLVM Assigned RUSTFLAGS (empty by default)
Docker images None LLVM .dockerignore excludes .cargo/ and rust-toolchain.toml; stable rust: base images specified by their Dockerfiles

MSRV check None LLVM, stable 1.95 Remove config before cargo check
Panic/unwind probe LLVM in the normal test gate; Cranelift only for the isolated reproduction Standalone manifest and make test-cranelift-probe

Decisions

  • Dependabot moves the dated nightly through its rust-toolchain ecosystem;
    CI follows rust-toolchain.toml. The stable rust-version = "1.95" remains
and a new MSRV job checks every target. crates/ambient-fs now declares
1.95 so the workspace is checked with one compiler.
  • No standard-preserving Make recipe assigns RUSTFLAGS; release and Whitaker routes
set explicit boundaries and workflow contracts verify them.
  • mold is Linux-only. The x86_64 and AArch64 Linux target tables select
clang; macOS and Windows keep their platform linker.
  • The nightly's Cargo layout required trybuild 1.0.122 for compile-contract
    fixture discovery.
  • Cargo Audit reports four zstd advisories through Wasmtime's persistent cache:
    0391,
    0398,
    0403, and
    0410. The cache calls only
zstd::encode_all and decode_all; it does not call the affected context-reuse
or seekable APIs, decode_all is explicitly unaffected by the legacy-frame
issue, and the allocator advisory applies only when zstd-sys builds for
wasm32. The make audit exceptions are restricted to the exact affected
lockfile packages and checked by scripts/verify_audit_ignore_paths.py.
  • A versioned ratchet file, .coverage-baseline.rust.nightly-2026-10-16,
separates the pinned-nightly baseline from the stable-era baseline. The
coverage.yml publisher remains the sole writer and writes only on a push
to main; manual dispatch and the PR lane only compare. The authorized
bootstrap therefore happens on the first main-owned push after merge without
    weakening the ratchet.

Validation

  • Current candidate: 709d9e77414cadf06f8b958b09b2da20fff9dc3f, based on
main at 74d9b89215f5b4e039cae53503d6bec155471f0c. The candidate passed
make frontend-full, make frontend-verify, make check-fmt, make lint,
make typecheck, make test, make test-workflow-contracts,
make markdownlint, and make nixie sequentially. Workspace tests passed
4,442 (12 skipped); workflow contracts passed 1,918 (11 skipped). CodeScene
    delta found no issues. make audit passed on the preceding merged candidate;
the subsequent commits did not change Cargo dependencies. Hosted checks for
the current head are in progress. On the preceding head bcc1a88a,
    Frontend,
    Run Tests,
    Coverage Ratchet,
    Code Style,
    E2E, and
    release packages
    passed.
  • Earlier candidate: f08d6fdc5d29a1b56851fb5a5c1085beaf6ab476, based on
    main at a0748259897539868cabe6dfe6ede0b575b67de6.
  • That earlier source tree passed nine sequential local
gates: make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test,
make test-workflow-contracts, make spelling, make markdownlint,
    make nixie, and make all. Formatting left 172 files unchanged;
workflow contracts passed 1,897 tests (11 skipped); workspace tests passed
4,442 (12 skipped), followed by the GitHub tool, hyper-rustls, and standalone
Cranelift probe suites. MarkdownLint found zero issues and Nixie validated
    all diagrams.
  • Earlier candidate hosted checks passed: Run Tests
    40475937453
    ,
    Code Style 40475937454,
    Coverage Ratchet 40475937748,
    Frontend 40475937441,
    E2E Tests 40475937571,
    and Regression Test enforcement
    40475937580
    .
    The CodeScene review
    also passed.
  • Earlier release package validation
    40475937534

passed all five package targets across Linux, macOS, and Windows. It builds
the cargo-dist native local packages, verifies hand-off, and runs global
packaging and checksums. The workflow grants read-only repository
permission and creates no release. The tag-triggered publishing workflow
    remains a release-time check.
  • make audit passed on
    97479bffceaa714219c66d60c74b89e9965b0b90; Cargo manifests and lockfiles
have not changed since that audit. It reported 33 advisory warning lines
    across 16 distinct advisory IDs.
  • The module comment in
tests/probes/cranelift-unwind/src/lib.rs states that the standalone probe
runs outside the workspace test matrix and describes its four comparative
    panic tests.
  • On the earlier candidate, local Bun 1.4.4 frontend lint, type checking,
604 unit tests, two accessibility tests, Fluent checks, semantic checks
(zero Semgrep findings), and make frontend-verify passed. The embedded
assets match the Vite 8.3.4 production build. The hosted frontend workflow
pins Bun 1.3.11, so its exact-head result remains authoritative.

Review disposition

  • CodeRabbit's Docstring Coverage warning reported 20.73% across 1,090
functions and 55 files. CodeRabbit's exact checker has not supplied a
reproducible current-head inventory or shown whether generated app.js
contributes to the denominator. The focused exact-head follow-up produced
an independent changed-line Python AST audit: 232 of 239 changed-line
function definitions have individual docstrings; the seven without them
are a class initializer, a nested failure-injection test helper, and five
private property-test helpers. This is not a reproduction of CodeRabbit's
metric. AGENTS.md requires non-trivial module documentation and public
API Rustdoc, not individual docstrings for these private test functions.
CodeRabbit found no confirmed source defect and prescribed no source repair.
Keep the aggregate warning inconclusive; do not bulk-document functions or
alter generated assets or the configured threshold. See
    the exact-head diagnostic reply.
  • The parser changes named in review—SandboxMode, SandboxJobStatus, and
    HttpsUrl—address the pinned nightly's
    clippy::try_from_instead_of_from_str diagnostics. Five
    std::pin::pin! replacements in concurrency_tests.rs and sse.rs address
clippy::unnecessary_box_pin. These are the eight compiler-identified lint
sites; the changes do not alter behaviour.
  • app.js and index.css are regenerated embedded assets. PR Build(deps-dev): bump vitest from 3.2.4 to 5.0.4 in /web-src #474 had already
moved the base branch to Vite 8.3.4 and Vitest 5.0.4. Application SPA source
and dependency inputs remain unchanged; the development runner, its tests,
and mock fixture literals change for CI reliability. The rebuild differs from
the old mainline assets. make frontend-verify rebuilds the SPA and rejects
stale checked-in assets; commit a6af4586 records that restoring the old
assets made this gate fail. Keeping the rebuilt files makes the embedded
output match the source and gate.

The frontend verification repair keeps the preview unavailable until the initial
Vite bundle is complete, reports startup errors, and exercises the output
readiness boundary. The fixture string changes satisfy the updated lint rule
without changing their values. These changes repair frontend checks exercised
when the branch is tested against current main.

Security impact

No runtime permission, network, secret, file-access, tool-execution, or sandbox
policy changes. CI now installs and verifies pinned build tools, including
mold, before compiling Linux jobs.

Database impact

None. No schema, migration, or persistence behavior changes.

Blast radius

Changes the default local and CI Rust compiler configuration, build-tool
preflight, source-build instructions, and workflow routing. Explicit release,
coverage, Docker, Whitaker, and MSRV boundaries retain LLVM and their documented
flags. The first tag-triggered cargo-dist release run on the pinned nightly
remains untested until a release tag; this repository does not use cross or
maturin in its release workflow.

Rollback plan

Revert the merged PR commit if the default build causes a regression. This
restores the previous toolchain/build routing and stable-era coverage baseline;
then rerun the normal main coverage publisher before accepting further changes.

Summary

  • Adopt nightly-2026-10-16 and -Zthreads=8 as the default development-build configuration. Use pinned mold on Linux.
  • Route coverage, release and packaging, Docker, Whitaker and MSRV builds outside the development defaults. Add pinned build-tool installation and checks, workflow contracts, and non-publishing package validation.
  • Keep LLVM as the development backend. The standalone Cranelift probe records panic-unwinding failures on the tested nightly and Linux target. It does not establish full-workspace Cranelift compatibility. Track the six-month review in issue #461.
  • Set the stable MSRV to Rust 1.95 and add an MSRV check. Implement FromStr for SandboxMode and HttpsUrl; retain TryFrom compatibility for SandboxMode.
  • Delay frontend preview startup until Vite completes its initial build.
  • Document the toolchain decision and build routing in the developers’ guide, addressing issue #396.

Validation

The author reports local passes for frontend, formatting, lint, typecheck, test, workflow-contract, documentation and diagram gates. The author also reports that hosted checks were still running at the latest inspection. The first tag-triggered publishing run remains untested.

The author reports that exact-head, non-publishing package validation passed for all five native package targets, artifact hand-off, global packaging and checksum checks. Treat tag-triggered publication as a release-time operational check.

Walkthrough

The pull request pins a dated nightly toolchain and mold, centralises installation and checks, updates CI and release routes, adds build contracts and an unwind probe, validates package artefacts, and updates selected Rust parsers and web development tooling.

Explanation

[#396] asks for an explicit toolchain decision. The PR selects option 1, a pinned nightly. Evidence at the reviewed head:

  • rust-toolchain.toml pins channel = "nightly-2026-10-16", a dated nightly, with rustfmt, clippy, rust-analyzer, llvm-tools-preview and wasm32-wasip2.
  • .cargo/config.toml adds -Zthreads=8 to [build] and to the Linux [target.'cfg(target_os = "linux")'] table. The Linux table also adds -Clink-arg=-fuse-ld=mold. The x86_64 and aarch64 Linux target tables set linker = "clang".
  • The Makefile routes coverage, release and packaging, Docker, Whitaker and MSRV builds away from the standard. The PR description gives the routing matrix. The tests/workflow_contracts checks enforce these routes.
  • The rationale and the Cranelift exception are recorded in the developers' guide (section 8, as stated in the PR). The reviewed .cargo/config.toml comment also points to that section.
  • The Cranelift exception rests on the standalone probe at tests/probes/cranelift-unwind. The PR reports failing Cranelift results for catch_unwind_catches, spawned_thread_panic_is_join_error and nested_drop_runs_during_unwind. The issue makes Cranelift conditional on the suite passing. The recorded evidence does not show that condition is met, so the exception is consistent with the issue.
  • .github/workflows/release-package-validation.yml runs a non-publishing dist plan and local and global packaging for all five native package targets. The PR reports hosted runs passing at the current head. I did not inspect those hosted runs. The PR states that the first tag-triggered release run is untested. The issue does not require that run before merge.

No coding requirement of [#396] is unmet on the available evidence.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change set groups into three classes.

  1. Direct implementation of the build-standard decision: rust-toolchain.toml, .cargo/config.toml, the Makefile, scripts/build-tools-common.sh, scripts/check-build-tools.sh, scripts/install-build-tools.sh, tools/mold/, the workflow routing changes, .dockerignore, the Dependabot rust-toolchain entry, the msrv job, the coverage baseline file, the release-package validation workflow, the Cranelift probe and the tests/workflow_contracts checks. The docs and CHANGELOG describe the same decision.

  2. Compatibility changes that the pinned nightly requires: the FromStr conversions for SandboxMode, SandboxJobStatus and HttpsUrl (the clippy::try_from_instead_of_from_str lint), the five std::pin::pin! replacements (clippy::unnecessary_box_pin), the trybuild 1.0.122 bump, the rust-version 1.95 declarations in ambient-fs and pg-embed-setup-unpriv, and the zstd entries in make audit and verify_audit_ignore_paths.py. The PR states that parse behaviour is unchanged, and the tests in tests/sandbox_mode_parse.rs and the compile-contract fixture check that.

  3. Validation repairs for the frontend gate: web-src/scripts/dev.ts, build-output.ts, the mock fixture literals, the regenerated app.js and index.css, and their tests. The PR states that make frontend-verify rejects stale embedded assets and that these changes repair checks run on this branch. This connection is stated but indirect. The frontend dev-runner readiness change is the least tied to the toolchain decision. No unrelated runtime, permission, network, secret, sandbox-policy or product feature change is demonstrated. The PR description states that the security and database impact is none.

No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The pull request adds substantive tests for the changed behaviour. The build-tool scripts run in a controlled sandbox and test successful installation, malformed pins, missing or drifted tools, checksum failures, download failures, and rustup failures (tests/workflow_contracts/build_tools_scripts_test.py:101-386). Make tests dry-run every Cargo and Whitaker route, check invocation routing and preflight order, and apply 12 failing mutations (tests/workflow_contracts/build_standard_make_test.py:83-180,264-390). Configuration, workflow, MSRV, Dependabot, audit-path, and release-package contracts parse the committed files and use mutation cases, rather than asserting only constants (tests/workflow_contracts/build_standard_config_test.py:77-186, build_standard_workflows_test.py:108-150, toolchain_policy_test.py:193-331, release_package_validation_test.py:79-240). Rust parser changes have runtime and compile-contract coverage (tests/sandbox_mode_parse.rs:6-20, tests/trybuild/sandbox_mode_from_str.rs:7-18, src/db/params.rs:72-104, src/channels/web/handlers/job_control.rs:163-198, src/tools/builtin/skill_fetch/tests.rs:10-124). The frontend readiness and child-supervision changes have tests for split and ANSI-wrapped output, rejected readiness signals, startup failures, early exits, and shutdown races (web-src/axinite/tests/dev-startup.test.ts:24-263); Vitest includes this file through web-src/vitest.config.ts:17-22. The tests exercise outputs, state, errors, and process lifecycle, so they are not vacuous. Generated frontend assets remain covered by the repository's build-consistency verification and do not introduce application-owned source logic.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

PASS — The changed source-build behaviour is documented for end users in docs/users-guide.md: it gives the required make install-build-tools, PATH export, cargo build, pinned nightly, Linux clang/mold, and Make-path behaviour. docs/migrations/0.19.0.md signposts the changed build approach and its exclusions. The English and Chinese README quick starts contain matching installation guidance. The frontend supervisor change is developer-only and is documented in docs/solidjs-frontend.md; the Rust parsing changes retain existing runtime outcomes and do not add end-user behaviour.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

Pass. Document the changed frontend lifecycle in both required documents. docs/developers-guide.md:4486-4493 and docs/solidjs-frontend.md:72-77 now state the Vite completion signal, delayed preview start, no-start behaviour after early exit or shutdown, preview supervision, startup-error reporting, unexpected-exit handling, and clean signal shutdown. docs/developers-guide.md:1338-1649 also documents the pinned nightly, build tools, routing exclusions, parser changes, and Cranelift decision. No roadmap or new execplan change is required by this PR. Prior failure addressed: The prior frontend gap is addressed by the added lifecycle sections in docs/developers-guide.md:4486-4493 and docs/solidjs-frontend.md:72-77.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Pass. All changed modules carry module-level documentation. The new Python contract modules have docstrings, for example tests/workflow_contracts/_build_standard.py:1-11 and tests/workflow_contracts/_build_standard_workflows.py:1-12; the inventory found a docstring in every changed Python module. Changed Rust modules retain //! documentation, and new nested modules document their role, including src/db/traits/sandbox.rs:312-313 and tests/probes/cranelift-unwind/src/lib.rs:1-6. Changed TypeScript and generated JavaScript files also have file-level JSDoc headers, such as web-src/scripts/dev.ts:1-5 and src/channels/web/static/solid/assets/app.js:1. The new shell scripts provide module-purpose headers immediately after their shebangs. No changed module lacks a purpose or component relationship description where that relationship is not obvious.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Accept the testing coverage. Public parser changes have success, error, error-type, compatibility, and trybuild contracts in tests/sandbox_mode_parse.rs:6-19, src/channels/web/handlers/job_control.rs:163-194, src/db/traits/sandbox.rs:307-319, and tests/trybuild/sandbox_mode_from_str.rs:3-18. Build-standard changes have mutation, invariant, property, and source-error tests in tests/workflow_contracts/build_standard_config_test.py:52-186; Make routing tests execute dry-run recipes and check preflight and exclusions in tests/workflow_contracts/build_standard_make_test.py:83-225; and build-tool tests execute the shell scripts in a sandbox with missing-tool, malformed-pin, checksum, download, and install-failure cases in tests/workflow_contracts/build_tools_scripts_test.py:101-386. Workflow contracts parse the repository workflows, derive compiling Make targets, and test structural mutations in tests/workflow_contracts/build_standard_workflows_test.py:53-115 and :294-338; the package-validation workflow has a dedicated contract covering triggers, read-only permissions, all five targets, artefact hand-off, checksums, and failure evidence in tests/workflow_contracts/release_package_validation_test.py:79-240. The frontend change has boundary tests for chunked and ANSI output, readiness gating, startup failures, early exits, and signal shutdown through exported pipeOutput and superviseChildren in web-src/axinite/tests/dev-startup.test.ts:24-262. No explicit testing failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

PASS. Rust compile-time API changes have compile-contract coverage: tests/trybuild/sandbox_mode_from_str.rs checks the public SandboxMode FromStr and TryFrom bounds and is registered by tests/trybuild.rs. The internal SandboxJobStatus and HttpsUrl parser error boundaries have compile-time trait assertions in their test modules, with behavioural parsing tests. The TypeScript readiness and supervision changes have focused Vitest coverage in web-src/axinite/tests/dev-startup.test.ts; strict TypeScript checking includes scripts and axinite/tests. The output assertions check stable, explicit lines and lifecycle outcomes. Snapshot tests are not necessary here because the tests use small semantic assertions instead of large or unstable output.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

PASS — The pull request preserves the required unit boundaries. Rust parsing remains pure and fallible through FromStr with explicit error types (src/db/traits/sandbox.rs:46-63, src/channels/web/handlers/job_control.rs:48-87, src/tools/builtin/skill_fetch/url_policy.rs:15-34). Database reads still return Result and convert storage or parse failures at the persistence boundary (src/db/libsql/sandbox.rs:347-367, src/history/store/sandbox.rs:349-363). Network I/O remains in the explicitly named fetch_skill_bytes command and returns Result (src/tools/builtin/skill_fetch/http.rs:66-101). Frontend output, readiness, and process supervision use separate units with injected writers, observers, process starters, signal handlers, and exit handlers (web-src/scripts/build-output.ts:10-57, web-src/scripts/dev.ts:88-168). The new tests cover readiness, startup failure, early exit, and signal shutdown (web-src/axinite/tests/dev-startup.test.ts:72-262). Build-tool installation and capability checks remain explicit command boundaries (scripts/install-build-tools.sh:62-145, scripts/check-build-tools.sh:20-147), and Make targets declare their preflight dependencies (Makefile:133-146, Makefile:271-321). No changed path introduces a query-side write, hidden network call, wall-clock dependency, global client, or unrelated responsibility.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

PASS: The pull request does not introduce a domain-architecture violation. The changed Rust code only migrates existing string conversions to FromStr and preserves the existing domain values and errors. SandboxMode remains an explicit enum with a domain-specific SandboxModeParseError in src/db/traits/sandbox.rs:23-65; database adapters translate stored strings and map parse failures to DatabaseError in src/db/libsql/sandbox.rs:347-371 and src/history/store/sandbox.rs:348-366. The web adapter keeps SandboxJobStatus local to the handler and translates its stored value at the adapter boundary in src/channels/web/handlers/job_control.rs:40-90. HttpsUrl remains an HTTP/tool adapter type with its existing reqwest::Url and ToolError boundary in src/tools/builtin/skill_fetch/url_policy.rs:1-35; the fetch path only changes the conversion call in src/tools/builtin/skill_fetch/http.rs:66-70. No changed command claims a new invariant, and no changed domain logic gains transport, SQL, ORM, filesystem, environment, or vendor-specific dependencies.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely. It includes Summary, Change Type (CI/Infrastructure checked), Linked Issue (#396), Validation, Security Impact, Database Impact, Blast Radius, Rollback Plan and Review track C. The Summary and Decisions sections explain the pinned nightly, the routing of coverage, release, Docker, Whitaker and MSRV builds, and the Cranelift exception. Validation lists the gates run and their results. The template's validation checklist items are not ticked, but the author lists the equivalent gates (make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test) with results. Two gaps remain. The Validation section does not name the specific tests in the 'Relevant tests pass' form the template asks for, although workflow-contract and workspace test counts are given. The Summary bullets do not cover every change. The Review track is C, which matches the template's CI requirement and the author's own statement.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Property tests are missing for the new frontend state and stream invariants. createBuildReadiness and pipeOutput were introduced in web-src/scripts/build-output.ts:11-56, and delayed-child supervision was added in web-src/scripts/dev.ts:85-168. The new tests in web-src/axinite/tests/dev-startup.test.ts:24-262 use fixed examples and cover selected orderings only. They do not generate arbitrary UTF-8 chunk boundaries, line sequences, readiness inputs, or event orderings. The repository already provides fast-check in web-src/package.json:61 and uses it in existing tests, so a suitable property-test facility is available. The PR does add Hypothesis properties for Python build-standard helpers, but those do not cover the introduced TypeScript transitions.

Resolution

Add fast-check properties for the frontend changes. Generate arbitrary stream chunk partitions and assert that pipeOutput emits the same complete lines and observer events as the concatenated input. Generate bounded readiness-line variants and assert that only a valid Vite completion line resolves readiness. Generate bounded delayed-child event histories, including readiness, child exits, startup failure, repeated signals, and shutdown races, then assert the supervision invariants: preview starts at most once, never starts after shutdown or an early build exit, owned children are killed once, and the final exit code follows the documented rule. Keep the existing fixed examples as readable boundary cases.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

The prior observability failure remains unresolved. The PR changes the generated production bundle at src/channels/web/static/solid/assets/app.js:2, including TanStack Query hydration with queryType and infinite-query handling, retry flow, and blocked-navigation handling for unsafe protocols. These changes affect cache and hydration outcomes, retry failures, and navigation reliability. No client query or router source changed, and no new bounded metrics, traces, or failure logs cover hydration failure, retry exhaustion, or blocked navigation. Existing console.warn handling in web-src/axinite/src/app/router.tsx:23-29 only reports unmatched-route redirects, while boundary-diagnostics.ts:21-33 covers unrelated gateway response boundaries. web-src/package.json and web-src/bun.lock are unchanged, so the generated bundle change also has no reviewed dependency-source change in the PR range.

Resolution

Add bounded client-side observability at the changed query and router boundaries. Record query operation type, cache or hydration outcome, retry outcome, and navigation failure category with fixed labels. Log or trace hydration failures, retry exhaustion, and blocked navigation. Exclude query keys, URLs, user identifiers, payloads, and tokens. Regenerate app.js from the reviewed dependency set and record that dependency source in the PR, or revert the generated bundle change.

Set -Zthreads=8 in every rustflags source and the mold linker on Linux
in .cargo/config.toml, repeating the frontend flag because Cargo
selects one source. Add make build (from #274), and make
install-build-tools and check-build-tools: a checksum-verified pinned
mold plus the pinned toolchain, checked before every build, test, lint
and typecheck target with an actionable error and no fallback.

Whitaker keeps a literal RUSTFLAGS boundary, superseding #398's mold
composition, which rust-build-defaults BD-008 rejects. Cranelift is not
adopted; see the developers' guide and #461. A narrow typos overlay
admits identifiers naming the mold linker.

@pandalump Treat the matrix-script finding and Developer Documentation as resolved in source. Retain Observability as inapplicable as stated.

Assessed base: 74d9b89215f5b4e039cae53503d6bec155471f0c
Assessed head: bcc1a88a3909266ae8e0ae4118e4a1ce9619f51c

The published PR metadata matches both revisions.

Finding Disposition Remaining action
Unverified matrix-script finding Resolved in source. Unclassified whole matrix-supplied commands now preserve the matrix-read failure. No further repair for the cited case.
Developer Documentation Resolved. Both guides describe readiness, early exit, shutdown, preview supervision, and startup error reporting. No further edit for this row.
Observability Inapplicable as stated. No new source-level evidence establishes the requested dependency-internal telemetry requirement. Do not add query/router instrumentation solely because generated dependencies appear in app.js.

Accept the matrix-script repair

In tests/workflow_contracts/_suite_reader.py, Line 310–325, the reader recognizes an unclassified whole matrix expression as a potentially hidden suite command. Line 345–350 then re-raises MatrixReadError instead of silently omitting that job.

The exemption list at Line 294–305 uses the exact workflow, job identifier, and command. It permits only:

  • matrix.install_dist.run in release.yml::build-local-artifacts.
  • matrix.install_dist.run in release-package-validation.yml::build-local-artifacts.
  • matrix.packages_install in that package-validation job.

These entries match the inspected release workflow steps. They do not exempt arbitrary jobs or all scripts in either workflow.

In tests/workflow_contracts/suite_reader_test.py:

  • Line 133–148 covers both a standalone opaque command and an opaque command after echo setup;.
  • Line 167–176 confirms that an unrelated job cannot claim the installer exemption.
  • Line 115–131 also guards against Make options hiding a known suite.

Accept this as a repair for the reported whole-command case. Do not extend that conclusion to complete shell or GitHub expression interpretation.

Accept both documentation updates

The lifecycle descriptions are present in:

  • docs/developers-guide.md, Line 4486–4493.
  • docs/solidjs-frontend.md, Line 72–77.

Both describe the initial built in … signal, suppression of preview startup after early exit or shutdown, preview supervision, startup error reporting, and owned-child cleanup.

Retain the observability disposition

The base and head have identical web-src/package.json and web-src/bun.lock blobs. The authored web-src changes are limited to development-runner code, startup tests, and mock-fixture literals. No application SPA source change appears in that diff.

Regenerated JavaScript can change the code served by the gateway. That fact alone does not establish a missing application-owned telemetry boundary. No inspected evidence changes the earlier disposition.

Prescribe no source repair or AI coding-agent prompt for these three findings. No concrete remaining defect was established.

Keep execution verification separate

Regression test enforcement passed. CodeScene also passed. Frontend verification, Formatting, tests, and native package jobs were still running at inspection time.

Wait for the exact-head required checks before making a merge decision. Treat the local gate results and 1,915 passed with 11 skipped as user-reported evidence.

I inspected exact-head source, regression definitions, documentation, workflow steps, Git identities, and hosted metadata. I ran no repository builds or tests. CodeGraph was not available through the supplied capabilities.

This reply reconciles only the requested findings. It does not rewrite the walkthrough, start a full review, resolve review threads, or change provider approval status.

@coderabbitai Please assess the Testing (Property / Proof) row on published head f1fd1a2, based on 74d9b89.

build-output.property.test.ts exercises arbitrary valid UTF-8 chunk partitions against an independent line and observer oracle and bounded completion-line variants. dev-supervision.property.test.ts generates bounded readiness, early exit, startup failure, preview exit, and repeated-signal histories and checks ownership, at-most-once startup, cleanup, and exit rules. Existing fixed examples remain.

make frontend-full, make frontend-verify, make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test, make test-workflow-contracts, make markdownlint, and make nixie passed. Workflow contracts passed 1,918 with 11 skipped. CodeScene delta found no issues and both new property files scored 10.00. Hosted checks for this new head are starting.

Please confirm whether the row is resolved, or identify the specific remaining defect and provide an AI coding agent prompt. State analysis limitations. This is focused reconciliation, not a full review request.

@pandalump Treat Testing (Property / Proof) as substantially addressed, but keep the shutdown-race coverage requirement open. The stream properties are present. The supervision property selects five ordered scenarios; it does not generate competing event orderings.

Assessed base: 74d9b89215f5b4e039cae53503d6bec155471f0c
Assessed head: f1fd1a2b3e92897ae948291057117fc828f52235

The published PR metadata matches both revisions.

Accept the added properties

Area Verified source evidence
Output framing web-src/axinite/tests/build-output.property.test.ts, Line 25–72, generates valid UTF-8 text from a bounded alphabet and byte chunks that can split multibyte characters. It compares labelled output and observer calls against a separate whole-string oracle.
Readiness recognition The same file, Line 75–105, generates integer and fractional durations, both units, ANSI wrapping, and invalid near misses.
Ordered lifecycle scenarios web-src/axinite/tests/dev-supervision.property.test.ts, Line 115–161, checks startup counts, owned-child cleanup, signal-listener removal, startup-error reporting, and exit-code rules.

Describe these as bounded randomized properties, not exhaustive proofs or unrestricted Unicode coverage.

Close the specific remaining coverage gap

The published finding explicitly requests shutdown races.

In dev-supervision.property.test.ts::exerciseHistory, Line 94–112:

  • The early-exit and pre-readiness signal scenarios resolve readiness only after supervision finishes.
  • The post-readiness scenarios wait for preview startup before delivering an exit or signal.

These schedules verify separated phases. They do not test readiness competing with a build exit or shutdown signal in the same turn or adjacent microtasks. Randomizing the scenario, exit code, and signal count does not vary those orderings.

This is a test-coverage gap, not a demonstrated supervisor defect. Do not change production code without a failing case.

AI coding-agent prompt

Complete only the shutdown-race property coverage for PR #398.

Head: f1fd1a2b3e92897ae948291057117fc828f52235

Follow AGENTS.md and web-src/AGENTS.md.
Retain the existing stream properties and fixed examples.

Extend:
web-src/axinite/tests/dev-supervision.property.test.ts

Generate bounded event schedules rather than selecting only an ordered
scenario. Cover readiness competing with build exit and SIGINT/SIGTERM:
- Deliver both events without an intervening wait.
- Vary their order.
- Add bounded microtask yields between events.
- Include repeated signals during cleanup.

Define an independent expected-state model.
Distinguish event delivery from the supervisor observing the event.
Assert:
- Preview starts at most once.
- Preview does not start after shutdown has begun.
- If the supervisor observes early build exit before readiness, preview
  does not start.
- Every owned child is cleaned up once.
- A preview that never starts is not killed.
- Exit status follows the documented winning-event rule.
- Signal listeners are removed.

Use bounded waits and deterministic deferred promises.
Retain reproducible fast-check counterexamples.
Do not use uncontrolled wall-clock races.

If a property fails, retain the minimized schedule.
Change production code only after establishing a contract violation.

Run make frontend-full and make frontend-verify sequentially.
Run the applicable formatting and validation gates.
Report exact commands and results.

Keep execution verification separate

Regression test enforcement passed. Frontend verification was still running at inspection time.

I inspected exact-head source, repository guidance, the published finding, and hosted metadata. I ran no repository builds or tests. CodeGraph was unavailable through the supplied capabilities. Treat the local passes, 1,918 workflow-contract passes with 11 skipped, and CodeScene scores as user-reported evidence.

This assessment covers only Testing (Property / Proof). It does not change the walkthrough, review threads, or provider approval status.

The supervisor property now generates bounded competing readiness and build-exit or signal schedules, varies event order and microtask yields, and sends repeated signals during cleanup. It tracks start, observed exit and signal delivery separately, then checks at-most-once startup, no startup after observed shutdown, owned-child cleanup, exit result, and listener removal. Existing stream properties and examples remain.

On this tree make frontend-full, make frontend-verify, make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test, make test-workflow-contracts, make markdownlint, make nixie, and CodeScene delta passed; workflow contracts passed 1,918 with 11 skipped. Hosted checks are starting.

Please confirm whether the specific remaining property-testing gap is resolved, or identify a concrete defect and provide an AI coding agent prompt. State analysis limitations. This is a focused confirmation, not a request for a full review.

@pandalump Treat the remaining shutdown-race coverage gap as resolved in source. No concrete remaining defect was identified for this finding. No AI coding-agent remediation prompt is required.

Assessed base: 74d9b89215f5b4e039cae53503d6bec155471f0c
Assessed head: 709d9e77414cadf06f8b958b09b2da20fff9dc3f

The published PR metadata matches both revisions.

Accept the competing-event coverage

In web-src/axinite/tests/dev-supervision.property.test.ts:

Evidence Coverage
Line 288–320 Generates readiness competing with build exit or a signal. Varies event order and zero-to-six microtask yields. Zero yields delivers both events without an intervening wait.
Line 195–262 Records preview startup, signal delivery, and supervisor-observed exit separately. Build-exit promise resolution is not treated as immediate supervisor observation.
Line 309–310 Delivers additional SIGTERM and SIGINT signals to exercise repeated shutdown requests.
Line 269–285 Checks at-most-once startup, startup before observed shutdown, exactly-once owned-child cleanup, no cleanup of an unstarted preview, exit status, and listener removal.
Line 311–319 Uses a bounded completion wait and runs 120 generated cases.

These cases address the specific gap in my previous reply. The tests no longer cover only separated pre-readiness and post-readiness phases.

Retain the existing lifecycle scenarios, stream properties, and fixed examples. Describe the coverage as bounded randomized schedule testing, not an exhaustive concurrency proof.

Keep execution verification separate

Regression test enforcement passed on this head. Frontend verification was still running at inspection time. Other hosted checks were also pending or running.

Wait for the exact-head required checks before making a merge decision. Treat the reported local gate passes, 1,918 workflow-contract passes with 11 skipped, and CodeScene result as user-reported evidence.

Inspection limits

I inspected exact-head source, repository guidance, supervisor behaviour, and hosted metadata. I ran no repository builds or tests. CodeGraph was unavailable through the supplied capabilities.

The previous head f1fd1a2b… was unavailable locally, so the repair diff failed. The assessment above uses the requested candidate source directly.

This reply reconciles only the shutdown-race coverage finding. It does not start a full review, rewrite the walkthrough, resolve review threads, or change provider approval status.

## Summary

Add bounded client-side observability at application-owned query and router integration boundaries. Track query operation type, cache or hydration outcome, retry outcome, and navigation failure category with fixed labels.

Requested by @leynos as a follow-up to PR #398.

## Context and rationale

The review warning referenced TanStack Query hydration and router implementation code in the generated production bundle at `src/channels/web/static/solid/assets/app.js`, Line 2.

Earlier focused reconciliations did not establish a concrete application-owned telemetry defect in PR #398. They found that the application SPA source and dependency inputs were unchanged against the assessed base. Treat this issue as a requested observability enhancement, not as evidence that dependency regeneration introduced a confirmed defect.

The quoted warning is truncated. Establish the exact supported events and failure categories during implementation rather than reconstructing the missing text.

## Required work

1. Identify the application-owned query-client, hydration, retry, and router integration points under `web-src`. Audit existing telemetry before adding duplicate signals.
2. Define a fixed event and label vocabulary for:
   - Query operation type.
   - Cache and hydration outcomes.
   - Retry outcomes, including eventual success and exhaustion.
   - Navigation failure categories.
3. Emit structured logs or trace events for hydration failures, exhausted retries, and navigation failures at the supported application integration points.
4. Bound event volume through an explicit sampling or rate-limiting policy. Prevent telemetry failures from disrupting application behaviour.
5. Exclude credentials, query payloads, raw query keys, user identifiers, and unrestricted URLs or error messages from telemetry labels. Sanitize event fields.
6. Document the event schema, supported outcomes, collection path, privacy controls, and diagnostic use.
7. Add focused tests for event classification, bounded labels, redaction, duplicate suppression, and failure isolation.

## Affected areas

- Application-owned query and router integration code under `web-src`; identify exact source modules before implementation.
- Frontend tests and developer documentation.
- Generated embedded assets under `src/channels/web/static/solid`, only through the supported frontend build.

Do not hand-edit `app.js` or patch dependency-internal query/router implementations solely to satisfy the original generated-bundle warning. Prefer supported library hooks at application-owned boundaries.

## Acceptance criteria

- [ ] Document the existing telemetry coverage and the specific gaps addressed.
- [ ] Observe query operation type, cache or hydration outcome, retry outcome, and navigation failure category through a fixed vocabulary.
- [ ] Emit sanitized structured events for supported hydration, retry-exhaustion, and navigation failure paths.
- [ ] Verify bounded label cardinality and event volume.
- [ ] Verify that telemetry failures do not alter query, retry, or navigation behaviour.
- [ ] Add tests for successful and failed outcomes, privacy controls, and failure isolation.
- [ ] Document how to inspect the signals.
- [ ] Run `make frontend-full` and `make frontend-verify`, plus applicable repository gates.
- [ ] Regenerate embedded assets through the supported build if authored frontend source changes require it.

@leynos Created #484: Add bounded client-side observability for query and router outcomes. Assigned it to you.

The issue includes the requested signals, privacy controls, tests, acceptance criteria, and links to this discussion. It preserves the distinction between a follow-up enhancement and a confirmed defect in #398.
