Pull Request

Part of DF12-98

Summary

Change Type

  • CI/Infrastructure

Linked Issue

None in this repository. Workstream: DF12-98 (CI observability, grafana), plan step 2.3.1.

Validation

Security Impact

None. The three actions are first-party and pinned to a full commit; the finish action reads only named GITHUB_* and RUNNER_* variables and no secret, and neither the sampler nor the report needs a token or new permissions. No workflow permissions, triggers, secrets or network destinations change.

Database Impact

None.

Blast Radius

CI only: the five workflows' jobs and the workflow contracts. The actions never fail a job (without Python they warn and exit 0), so a fault in telemetry cannot turn a green job red. The sampler wakes every ten seconds, which is negligible against a compile and which docs/developers-guide.md says not to put on a timing job.

Rollback Plan

Revert the commit. It restores scripts/ci-resource-sampler.sh, the inline sccache report and the old contract in one step; nothing outside the repository is written, and the collector reads a job without a record as absent until it is reinstated.

Overlapping open pull requests

None is touched. Robot-house: #438, #275. Fleet: #427, #402. User: #365. Dependabot: #429, #425, #424, #423, #422. The one that matters: Dependency Audit (and the Run Tests roll-up that needs it) fails on 25 RustSec advisories (among them RUSTSEC-2026-0339 and RUSTSEC-2026-0342 in quinn-proto 0.11.14) in the dependency tree, which this pull request does not touch (no manifest or lock file changes); #438 patches runtime dependencies.

Review track: C (CI)

Summary by Sourcery

Instrument eligible CI jobs with pinned shared telemetry and enforce the wiring through workflow contracts.

New Features:

  • Add shared CI telemetry collection to jobs across the code style, coverage, CodeScene coverage, end-to-end, and test workflows.
  • Capture runner resource metrics and sccache results for centralized CI observability, including failed jobs and cache fallbacks.

Enhancements:

  • Replace the repository-specific resource sampler and inline sccache reporting with pinned shared actions.
  • Add workflow contracts and property-based checks that enforce telemetry placement, pinning, sccache wiring, roll-up exemptions, and coverage of paid runner jobs.

CI:

  • Instrument eligible workflow jobs with telemetry start and finish actions while leaving needs-based roll-ups uninstrumented.

Documentation:

  • Update the developer guide to document shared CI telemetry, its measurements, exemptions, and usage guidance.

Tests:

  • Add telemetry contract tests and generated fault checks, and integrate telemetry coverage into runner sizing validation.
  • Update sccache workflow contracts for shared-action reporting.

Chores:

  • Remove the obsolete CI resource sampler script.

Summary

  • Add shared CI telemetry start and finish actions to jobs in five workflows. Keep the four one-step roll-up jobs exempt.
  • Replace inline sccache statistics reporting with the shared sccache-report action. Pass the setup-rust status and cache backend where applicable.
  • Pin the shared actions to commit 81374b6f183e59f0570ad36217ded90d3240fda6.
  • Remove scripts/ci-resource-sampler.sh. Update the developer guide and workflow contracts for telemetry coverage, ordering, pinning and sccache wiring.

Validation

The PR reports 1,483 workflow-contract tests passed and six compile_contract_group_test failures. The author attributes those failures to a local cargo-nextest version that differs from CI’s pinned version, and reports that they also occur without this change. The PR reports that actionlint, make check-fmt, make spelling and make markdownlint passed.

Walkthrough

CI workflows replace local resource sampling and inline sccache reporting with shared actions. Telemetry covers additional jobs. Workflow contract tests validate telemetry use, sccache inputs, pinned action references, and roll-up job structure.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 203f9

The CI telemetry migration looks sound. The developer guide misstates which jobs start telemetry before checkout, and two workflow comments sit above the wrong steps. Fix these small documentation and layout issues; they do not block merging.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 42 functions across 5 files. (6 skipped: 6 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

The workflow contracts are substantive. They inspect every carrying job from the five instrumented workflows, enforce the telemetry pair and unconditional finish, and validate the actual sccache wiring (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_telemetry_test.py:48-109; sccache_test.py:344-372). The pure contract tests reject missing or misplaced telemetry, a report before the build, incorrect cache inputs, and manual statistics reporting (ci_telemetry_test.py:162-204). Roll-up tests reject action steps, no-op steps, missing needs aggregation, and telemetry exemptions (_telemetry.py:165-183; ci_telemetry_test.py:212-243). Prior failure addressed: Current tests reject telemetry actions and no-op roll-ups, and require needs-based aggregation. The sccache contract requires the report after setup and directly before telemetry finish; the report-before-build mutation is covered in ci_telemetry_test.py:171-204.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes CI instrumentation and developer-facing workflow guidance, not Axinite runtime behaviour or an end-user interface. The only documentation change is docs/developers-guide.md, which documents the shared telemetry actions and CI runner sizing. No update to docs/users-guide.md or migration guidance is required.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The developer guide now documents the shared telemetry actions, both valid start-order forms, unconditional finish behaviour, roll-up exemptions, telemetry outputs, and sccache wiring at docs/developers-guide.md:243-261. The workflows match this description: compile-contract, audit, Windows, and version-check jobs start telemetry before checkout, while other jobs place checkout or disk clean-up first (for example coverage.yml:94-96 and test.yml:61-64). Prior failure addressed: docs/developers-guide.md:246-249 now states that checkout and disk clean-up may precede telemetry and identifies the small pre-checkout job group; the affected workflows implement that ordering.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Pass the module-level documentation check. The pull request adds module docstrings to tests/workflow_contracts/_telemetry.py (lines 1-9) and tests/workflow_contracts/ci_telemetry_test.py (lines 1-21). These docstrings state each module's purpose, utility and relationship to the workflow contracts and collector. The modified modules codescene_coverage_test.py (lines 1-11), runner_sizing_test.py (lines 1-22) and sccache_test.py (lines 1-18) also retain clear module docstrings describing their purpose and use.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

Pass this check. The pull request changes YAML, Python, Markdown and shell files only; it adds no Rust or TypeScript compile-time behaviour, so trybuild or an equivalent compile-time test is not applicable. The workflow changes are structured configuration, not generated or user-facing UI output. The added contract tests use focused semantic assertions for action pinning, ordering, conditions, sccache wiring and roll-up variants, including deliberately invalid arrangements (tests/workflow_contracts/ci_telemetry_test.py:80-243 and tests/workflow_contracts/_telemetry.py:93-183). A broad snapshot of workflow files would add brittleness without improving coverage.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Mark this check PASS. The new telemetry checks are pure functions over in-memory step mappings: _telemetry.py:48-183 performs only mapping reads and returns findings. The mutation tests use copied in-memory fixtures in ci_telemetry_test.py:135-204. Keep workflow side-effects explicit through named, full-SHA-pinned actions and explicit with inputs; the PR removes the hidden inline sampler and manual sccache reporting. Repository reads remain at the existing _workflow_files.jobs() boundary, which documents SourceReadError handling. No changed unit combines unrelated persistence, transport, formatting, or orchestration responsibilities.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Pass the Domain Architecture check. The PR changes only CI workflows, CI contract tests, CI documentation, and the CI resource-sampler script. It changes no application, domain, persistence, transport, or adapter source. The new telemetry helper contains pure checks over workflow step mappings and calls pinned shared-actions from workflow boundaries; it does not introduce domain logic or infrastructure dependencies into the domain model.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

The pull request adds suitable observability for the changed CI behaviour. All five target workflows use paired shared telemetry actions, and finish steps run with if: always(); sccache jobs also report status and backend through the pinned sccache-report action (for example, .github/workflows/coverage.yml:161-221 and test.yml:248-257). The workflow contracts enforce pairing, failure-safe reporting, sccache wiring, full-SHA pinning and roll-up coverage (tests/workflow_contracts/_telemetry.py:93-162; ci_telemetry_test.py:72-109). The pinned shared-actions commit emits one DF12_CI_TELEMETRY record plus a summary (leynos/shared-actions@81374b6f183e59f0570ad36217ded90d3240fda6, .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/action.yml:4; README search evidence at line 4). The record includes runner, job, run, timing, CPU, memory, disk and bounded sccache fields, while sccache outcomes and elapsed time use bounded metric values (.github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/README.md:48,86; .github/actions/sccache-report/action.yml:79,109,123). This provides diagnosis for failures, resource pressure, cache fallback and cache errors without adding secrets, raw customer data, unbounded labels, or an unobserved production service boundary.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The pull request still lacks a workflow-boundary integration test. The added tests are static contract tests: ci_telemetry_test.py states that its checks are pure functions over step mappings (lines 16-18), reads parsed jobs (lines 48-91), and mutates synthetic step lists (lines 135-204). make test-workflow-contracts only runs this PyYAML/Pytest contract suite (Makefile lines 192-193). The changed workflow files do invoke the pinned actions, but no changed test runs a GitHub Actions job, executes the telemetry or sccache actions, forces a job failure, or checks the emitted record and cache fields. The PR therefore verifies configuration shape, not the externally observable workflow behaviour required by this check.

Resolution

Add a GitHub Actions boundary integration or end-to-end test for a representative Linux job. Run the pinned ci-telemetry-start, sccache-report, and ci-telemetry-finish actions, force the job work to fail, and assert that the finish step still emits exactly one telemetry record with the expected sampler and sccache fields. Retain the existing static workflow-contract tests.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

The new telemetry contract introduces invariants over arbitrary step sequences, counts, placements and orderings in tests/workflow_contracts/_telemetry.py:62-183. The tests cover only fixed mutations in tests/workflow_contracts/ci_telemetry_test.py:162-240; they do not use Hypothesis or another property/proof tool. The repository already provisions Hypothesis for this test target in Makefile:192-193. This meets the check condition for a property test.

Resolution

Add Hypothesis property tests for telemetry_problems, sccache_problems and roll_up_problems. Generate bounded step lists and relevant permutations, assert valid generated arrangements are accepted, and assert mutations such as duplicate actions, misplaced reporting, missing always(), invalid cache wiring and non-roll-up bodies are rejected. Keep the existing parameterized examples as readable regression cases. No exhaustive proof is required.

@coderabbitai At head 15d9c62, please re-check the five rows in your walkthrough for 76e200a (two failed, three warnings) and the six threads, addressed in the later commits:

  1. Testing (Overall), failed: the checks are now pure functions over a job's steps (_telemetry.py), and ci_telemetry_test.py hands each one deliberately wrong arrangements it must refuse: no finish, finish not under always(), reporting before starting, work before the start or after the report, a double start, sccache-report moved before setup-rust or before the build (it must run directly before the finish), the status missing or wrong, the report not under always() or with another id, setup-rust with another id, and a hand-written --show-stats. A roll-up is refused if it has no needs, more than one step, an action step, any telemetry action, or a step that does not aggregate needs. A new test ties every sized (paid-shape) job to a workflow in INSTRUMENTED_WORKFLOWS, which restores what the removed sampler test covered.
  2. Testing (Unit And Behavioural), failed: I argue this cannot be met as asked and is already met. The actions are not in this repository: their behaviour (one record, a failing job still reported, null sccache counts on a fallback, real sccache output) is tested where they live, and this repository only configures them, which the contract holds by value. The wiring has also run for real in this pull request's own CI: the Dependency Audit job FAILED and its Report CI telemetry step still printed its record, the Windows jobs printed unsupported-os records, and the Version Bump Check printed a proc-stat record. That is the failed-job path exercised on the pinned actions. (Dependency Audit fails on advisories in quinn-proto on main too, not because of this change.)
  3. Description check: the description now follows the template (change type, linked workstream, validation, security impact, database impact, blast radius, rollback plan, review track C).
  4. Docstring Coverage: every helper and test in the new modules has a docstring.
  5. Developer Documentation: the guide now says start runs after the checkout and disk clean-up where the job has them, and first in the small jobs that need neither; the contract allows exactly that.

Threads: private helper docstrings, assertion messages and ids=str, setup-rust selected by action reference with the id asserted apart, the type-ignore removed, the sized-job link, and the status assertion message. Do these clear the five rows and the six threads, and is anything else blocking a merge at this head?

@wafflecat-df12 Treat four rows as clear and Developer Documentation as partially addressed at 15d9c622. Keep the six original threads closed. GitHub confirms that all six are already resolved.

Five walkthrough rows

Row Re-check result
Testing (Overall) Clear. The pure checks and mutation cases cover the reported ordering, status, action-ID and roll-up gaps. The sized-job test links paid shapes to INSTRUMENTED_WORKFLOWS. CI reports 1,489 passed, 11 skipped.
Testing (Unit And Behavioural) Withdraw the demand for duplicate action-behaviour tests here. This repository owns the workflow wiring, not the shared-action implementation. The CI run for this head demonstrates the failed-job path: Dependency Audit failed, but its finish step emitted DF12_CI_TELEMETRY. The inspected Windows job emitted unsupported-os; Version Bump Check emitted proc-stat.
Description check Clear. The current description contains the required sections. The published walkthrough already lists this row as passed.
Docstring Coverage Clear for the reported omissions. Every helper and test in _telemetry.py and ci_telemetry_test.py has a docstring. I did not rerun the automated coverage calculation.
Developer Documentation Partially addressed. Correct docs/developers-guide.md, Line 246–248. The Windows jobs, audit and version-check do have checkout steps; telemetry starts before those steps. Both compile-contract jobs also start telemetry before checkout. The contract permits this.

Replace the ordering description with wording such as:

Start runs before ordinary job work. Checkout and disk clean-up may precede start. In some jobs, start is the first step and checkout follows. Finish runs after the job’s work with if: always(); only a cache save may follow it.

Six threads

The current code addresses the original helper-docstring, assertion-message, action-reference selection, type-ignore, sized-job coverage and status-message findings.

Keep two minor follow-ups separate from those original fixes:

  • Add messages to the new bare assertions in ci_telemetry_test.py, Line 195–196, Line 209, Line 237 and Line 243.
  • Replace the stale “sampler” wording in runner_sizing_test.py, Line 53, with “telemetry”.

Neither follow-up reveals a telemetry correctness blocker.

Remaining merge blockers

Do not treat this head as merge-ready yet:

  1. Dependency Audit fails, and Run Tests fails because of that audit result. The audit log reports 25 vulnerabilities, so do not limit the failure description to the two quinn-proto advisories. I did not verify the equivalent failure on main.
  2. The earlier CodeRabbit CHANGES_REQUESTED review remains active. Resolving its six threads did not replace that review. GitHub reports MERGEABLE, but the merge state remains BLOCKED.

I found no additional telemetry correctness blocker in the inspected scope. Correct the documentation warning and address the audit and outstanding review state before merging.

Verification limits: I inspected the requested head and its CI logs without running repository code. The shallow checkout lacked 76e200a0, so the local historical diff failed. The ambiguous linked shared-actions revision remains unverified; the CI logs establish the observed action execution, not the contents of its upstream test suite.

Thanks for clarifying the test ownership boundary.

Linked revisions not inspected for this answer: leynos/shared-actions (requested revision unavailable). Their changes remain unverified.

Learning: In leynos/axinite, the CI telemetry and sccache actions are implemented in leynos/shared-actions. Axinite owns their workflow configuration and tests that configuration through tests/workflow_contracts/_telemetry.py, ci_telemetry_test.py and sccache_test.py. Assess action implementation behaviour in the owning repository; do not require duplicate implementation tests in axinite solely because it calls pinned actions. Use axinite CI logs as evidence of the workflow integration paths actually exercised.

Replace the inline resource sampler and the hand-written sccache report with ci-telemetry-start, ci-telemetry-finish and sccache-report from shared-actions, pinned to 81374b6f. Every job in the five instrumented workflows now prints one telemetry record, except four roll-ups that run one step over needs. Delete scripts/ci-resource-sampler.sh and move the contracts from the sampler to the actions.
