Problem

The Rust workspace had completed its source-remediation and formatting layers, but the final lint policy was still only partially declared. One member duplicated a local lint table, the required Clippy thresholds and environment-access policy were absent, Rustdoc coverage was incomplete, and the documentation gate did not compile doctests with warnings denied.

This layer turns on the measured lint baseline after the source fixes. It also strengthens the audited safe-crate boundary so every effective Cargo target root in cuprum-streams must retain #![forbid(unsafe_code)].

Changes

  • add the remaining Clippy, Rust, and Rustdoc workspace lint levels plus the canonical complexity thresholds;
  • declare the repository's seven-method environment-access extension in rust/clippy.toml;
  • make cuprum-streams inherit the workspace tables;
  • retain the audited syscall and FFI exception by enforcing unsafe_code = "forbid" dynamically on every effective cuprum-streams Cargo target root;
  • honour Cargo automatic-target switches, explicit targets, and build-script settings through fail-closed loading and pure policy evaluation;
  • compile workspace doctests with all features and warnings denied, including warnings emitted from doctest bodies through the pinned Linux nightly rustdoc route;
  • package rust/clippy.toml in the native sdist; and
  • document baseline authority, inheritance, toolchains, exceptions, and extension ownership, including a dated ADR-011 addendum.

Baseline reconciliation

The run is frozen to Concordat revision cf4333c3f38b55bf3d4d5d2663e2147e2da1cec8. The prompt adds missing_assert_message and disallowed_methods; the latter uses the seven environment methods already recorded by the estate policy. The frozen canon does not impose blanket unsafe_code = "forbid", and this repository's audited native syscall/FFI crates require unsafe code. Every workspace member inherits the common tables, while the existing safe crate retains a dynamically checked crate-root prohibition across all effective Cargo target kinds.

Stable Rust 1.85 suppresses warnings produced inside doctest bodies and rejects rustdoc's display option. The existing pinned Linux nightly dev-fast toolchain supplies the supported maintenance route for --display-doctest-warnings and warning-denied doctest compilation; stable/MSRV routing remains unchanged.

Validation

All checks passed on 6f6e2c6831a2ffea4e4a314d5eb5fbff929d39c7, sequentially with distinct logs:

  • cargo metadata --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml --no-deps --format-version 1
  • focused lint, target, property, doctest, and spelling contracts: 98 passed
  • typos configuration regeneration twice with no drift
  • make boundary-contract
  • mbake validate Makefile
  • make check-fmt
  • make lint
  • make typecheck
  • make test (including Rust nextest 125/125)
  • make markdownlint
  • make nixie
  • make msrv-check (Rust 1.85.0)
  • cs delta 934c7666bf44d7451711c1bc260bf230da529c41 HEAD (No issues found!)

The doctest regression is decoupled from the optional Cranelift backend and uses a real temporary crate: the previous RUSTFLAGS=-D warnings route accepts a deprecated doctest call, while the pinned nightly rustdoc route rejects it. The target-discovery suite covers automatic target switches, build = false, explicit and pathless inferred targets, explicit-target overrides, Cargo-ignored hidden, ordinary support-file, and symlink-directory entries, isolated writable source materialization and preserved directory-link topology, .rs directory-form targets, unique reversible probe logs, malformed manifests, inaccessible sources, ordering and duplicate invariants, and missing unsafe prohibitions. The fixed Cargo --color spelling has a narrow generated exemption with a two-direction ordinary-prose rejection contract.

Explanation

The PR introduces Rust compile-time policy changes without adding a compile-time test for those changes. The diff changes [workspace.lints], rust/clippy.toml, and dynamic #![forbid(unsafe_code)] target enforcement, but it adds no Rust UI fixture or .stderr expectation. The existing trybuild harnesses and fixtures are unchanged from the base and cover pre-existing PyO3 and privacy contracts. The new tests mainly parse TOML, dry-run Make, inspect source text, or mock _compile; they do not compile code that proves the new lint baseline or target prohibition. The new doctest regression does run Cargo and covers the doctest route, but it does not cover the other changed compile-time policies. The output assertions are focused and deterministic, so a snapshot omission does not create a separate failure.

Resolution

Add a Rust trybuild/UI test or another real Cargo-based compile-time equivalent for the new policy. Cover at least one representative denied workspace lint and the safe-target unsafe_code rejection, including stable semantic diagnostic assertions. Add the corresponding fixture and expected output, or extend the existing boundary compile contract so the test itself invokes the compiler instead of relying only on mocked _compile calls. Keep paths, toolchain details, and other volatile diagnostic fields redacted or asserted through small stable fragments.

Reviewer's Guide

This PR completes the measured Rust lint baseline by centralizing workspace policy and Clippy thresholds, enforcing environment-access and Rustdoc rules, and requiring all workspace members to inherit the shared configuration. It also hardens cuprum-streams’ unsafe-code boundary through dynamic target-root discovery and compiler probes, adds warning-denied all-features doctests to the dev-fast test route, packages clippy.toml in native sdists, and documents the resulting authority, exceptions, toolchains, and maintenance rules.

Use the pinned Linux Rustdoc route to display and deny doctest-body
warnings. Make safe-target discovery match Cargo's automatic-target
switches, fail closed for unreadable inputs, and retain the audited
source-level unsafe prohibition.

Add executable lint, routing, target-discovery, and warning contracts,
then record the implementation evolution in ADR-011.
Match Path.read_text's optional encoding and error parameters so the
unreadable-source contract remains type-safe.

Testing (Overall) Added parsed lint-table and clippy.toml contracts, complete doctest flag assertions, a real warning-bearing doctest failure test, explicit-target missing-policy rejection, and an orchestration test that preserves policy-error precedence.
Unit Architecture Split fail-closed filesystem/TOML loading from pure discovery and policy evaluation; added malformed-manifest and inaccessible-source tests.
Developer Documentation Restored the accepted ADR narrative and added a dated ADR-011 addendum with cross-references from the developer guide and verification document.
Testing (Property / Proof) Added Hypothesis coverage for automatic, nested, explicit, and build-script targets, duplicates, ordering, disabled auto-targets, and missing-policy rejection.

The focused review suite passes 67 tests, CodeScene reports no findings, and the complete sequential repository gate set passes on this commit.

Discover pathless explicit target tables with Cargo's conventional
source paths and retain the unsafe boundary for each resolved root.
Make doctest diagnostics deterministic, include the lint contract in
the standard test selection, and distinguish current evidence from
the historical probe count.
Record the fixed external command spelling with a context-specific
pattern, regenerate the tracked Typos configuration, and prove ordinary
prose remains subject to the Oxford spelling rule.

@leynos Treat the directory-symlink finding as resolved at f1ba45da.

scripts/check_boundary_contract.py now uses shutil.copytree(..., symlinks=True). This preserves the isolated workspace topology.

test_main_preserves_automatic_directory_symlinks() verifies all required conditions:

  • Cargo metadata has the same target roots before and after the copy.
  • The copied workspace retains intended targets.
  • The copied workspace preserves valid directory symlinks.
  • The copied workspace preserves dangling directory symlinks.
  • The baseline-plus-probe invocation count remains unchanged.

No unresolved review threads were returned. Do not make further changes for this finding. No AI-agent prompt is required.

Wait for the hosted checks that are still in progress or queued before approval.

Preserve Cargo's directory topology while materializing writable source-file
links in the copied workspace. Reject target paths that could route probes
through an escaped or symlinked directory, and restore source bytes after a
failed probe write.
Separate fixture creation, probe recording, and copy assertions so the
external-link regression remains readable and within the CodeScene threshold.

Current-head pre-merge findings addressed in 67abfb81

Finding Resolution and evidence
Recursive target exclusion removed legitimate nested Cargo sources The shared copy helper ignores only root workspace build output; src/bin/target/main.rs remains copied, metadata-discovered, and probe-scheduled.
External file symlinks could escape the isolated probe workspace Effective source-file links are materialized as writable regular copied files; escaping explicit paths and symlinked parent targets fail closed. Original bytes and modes remain unchanged, and probe restoration is byte-exact under CRLF and injected first-write failure.
Current-head validation 92 focused contracts passed; typos regeneration was stable twice; boundary contract, Make validation, formatting, lint, typecheck, 2,134 collected tests, Markdown, Mermaid, and MSRV gates all passed sequentially. CodeScene reports no issues.

@leynos The current implementation resolves both findings at 67abfb81.

  • copy_source_tree() excludes only the workspace-root target directory. It retains cuprum-streams/src/bin/target/main.rs.
  • test_main_keeps_nested_target_sources_and_omits_root_build_output() verifies Cargo metadata discovery, copy retention, probe scheduling, copied-file writability, unchanged source mode, and root build-output exclusion.
  • copy_workspace() preserves the source tree symlink topology. It replaces each effective source-file symlink with a copied regular file before probe mutation.
  • _copied_target_path() rejects target paths outside the Rust workspace. _reject_symlinked_parents() rejects target paths below a symlinked directory.
  • test_main_materializes_external_source_file_symlinks() covers relative and absolute external source-file symlinks. It verifies metadata parity, copied-file materialization, and unchanged external source bytes.
  • test_main_rejects_explicit_targets_that_escape_the_copy() covers relative escape paths, absolute paths, and symlinked parent directories.
  • test_probe_appended_preserves_crlf_bytes_after_a_write_failure() verifies byte-exact restoration for CRLF input after a partial first-write failure.

Do not make further changes for these two findings. No AI agent prompt is required.

Wait for the hosted checks before treating the full validation set as complete. The current hosted checks are still in progress or queued. The local source inspection did not execute repository tests.

Current-head pre-merge check resolution

Check Resolution and evidence
Cargo automatic target discovery rejected ordinary support files Fixed in 6f6e2c68: after preserving flat .rs targets and excluding directory symlinks, nested main.rs probing now requires a real directory. A tests/README.md regression proves scanner/Cargo-metadata parity while retaining unsafe nested-target rejection across all four automatic target roots.
Local validation at exact head 6f6e2c68 98 focused contracts, boundary contract, Make validation, formatting, lint, typecheck, the full 2,134-test suite, Markdown, Mermaid, and MSRV checks all passed sequentially.
Review threads and hosted checks All inline review threads are resolved. Rust boundary verification and CodeScene pass at the exact head; completed CI jobs pass, with coverage still finishing. @leynos Treat the ordinary-support-file finding as resolved at 6f6e2c68.

scripts/check_boundary_contract.py::_load_directory_target_roots() now requires both conditions before it accepts a nested target:

  1. The entry is a real directory and not a directory symlink.
  2. The nested main.rs is a regular file.

This excludes tests/support/ and tests/README.md. It retains valid nested main.rs targets.

test_visible_support_directory_without_main_is_not_a_target() verifies scanner and Cargo metadata parity. It also verifies policy rejection for an unannotated nested target in src/bin, examples, tests, and benches.

Do not make further code changes for this finding. No AI-agent prompt is required.

Wait for the coverage job to complete successfully. It is still IN_PROGRESS. The aggregate review decision remains CHANGES_REQUESTED until the hosted validation set completes. No unresolved review threads were returned.

Main's "Enforce the Rust lint baseline (#448)" added 1,758 bytes of prose
to docs/developers-guide.md, leaving only 1,650 bytes under skylos's
300,000-byte per-file cap. The rebased guide measured 301,417, so
SKY-U001 returned for _PipelineWaitState.should_terminate_others, a symbol
this branch never touched.

Cut the restatement the branch had added rather than whitelisting anything.
The guide now routes readers to the files that own each fact:
docs/local-validation-of-github-actions-with-act-and-pytest.md for the act
prerequisites and pins, the Makefile's own test-act comment for the opt-in
contract, docs/ci-benchmark-gate-telemetry.md for the record schema, and
ADR-015 for the harness design. Both should_terminate_others mentions
survive, including the class-qualified rescue form.

The cap is re-proved in both directions: 301,417 bytes reports the finding,
299,910 exits 0.

Also reflow both files through mdtablefix, which check-fmt required.

`test_main_materializes_external_source_file_symlinks` reaches the real
`cargo check`, which the Makefile forces serial via
`PYTEST_CARGO_BUILD_JOBS ?= 1`. Main's #448 added the test, and every input
it depends on is byte-identical to `df0b4f6c`, so the timeout against the
suite-wide `timeout = 30` was an inherited budget defect rather than a
branch regression: `make test` failed the batch and aborted the rest, while
a hosted runner's warm Cargo/sccache state passed it in 21.85s.

Main's #451 has since narrowed that compile to the two materialized
integration-test targets and dropped the unused copied dev-dependencies,
which is the better fix. It does not retire the bound here: even narrowed,
the build measured 181s cold and 98s warm on this host under the forced
serial build. Keep the raised bound and describe the command it now runs.
It sits above `boundary_compile._compile`'s own `timeout=600`, so a genuine
compile failure still surfaces its diagnostic instead of a timeout.

Main's #451 also added 1,758 bytes of guide prose, putting the merged guide
433 bytes over skylos's per-file cap and bringing back SKY-U001. Cut this
branch's own restatement rather than inherited text: the telemetry
paragraph and the act section each repeated material their owning documents
already carry, so both now point at ADR-014, the telemetry contract, ADR-015
and the local validation guide. The guide measures 299,928 bytes, 72 under
the cap, with the ADR index entries, the workflow-harness row, and both
should_terminate_others mentions intact.

Record the tenth and eleventh replays in the plan. The plan's new prose
also needed an `mdtablefix` reflow: `make check-fmt` reported 10 lines

80 columns with no byte-size change and no semantic difference.
