Makefile: new lint-whitaker target runs RUSTFLAGS="-D warnings" whitaker --all -- --all-targets --all-features; lint depends on it.
.github/workflows/ci.yml: an "Install Whitaker" step uses install-whitaker@5a99aed78ce68dcebd3052b75c31e6f173162b1e (approved by concordat #331, installer 0.2.11) before the lint step, so the job's make lint runs the wrapper.
Findings fixed (32 errors, all in two test targets; library and binary were clean):
no_std_fs_operations (28 in tests/toolchain, 2 in tests/documentation_examples): the toolchain tests now go through tests/toolchain/ambient.rs, a single cap-std ambient-authority shim whose error kinds (NotFound, ENOTDIR, permission denied) pass through unchanged; the documentation loader reads through a cap_std::fs::Dir. cap-std is a pinned dev-dependency.
Nested conditional in run: the stdin branch moved to run_with_stdin.
Module-doc finding: the fixture module's documentation is now an inner doc comment (which also satisfies Clippy's mixed-attributes lint).
No lint is suppressed.
AGENTS.md and docs/developers-guide.md list the new gate.
Gates (local)
check-fmt, markdownlint, typecheck, lint (including lint-whitaker, run with the 0.2.11 wrapper), test and design-check pass. make test-scripts could not run locally (no pytest on this host's python3); it is untouched by this change.

Summary
Add Whitaker as a required make lint gate across all targets and features, with Rust warnings denied. Install the pinned Whitaker action in CI and document the gate and local setup.
Replace direct filesystem access in toolchain tests with shared cap-std helpers. Update the documentation-example loader to read through a cap_std::fs::Dir. Move stdin handling into run_with_stdin and change the fixture documentation to an inner module comment.
Update ADR 0001 to record the Whitaker adoption and its test filesystem approach. No new execplan document is included.
Testing
The PR objectives report passing check-fmt, markdownlint, typecheck, lint, test and design-check. They report that make test-scripts could not run because pytest was unavailable on the host’s python3.
Walkthrough
The PR adds Whitaker linting to the Makefile and CI. It adds shared capability-based filesystem helpers and updates documentation-example and toolchain tests to use them.
Add cap-std and shared wrappers for filesystem operations, including path resolution and absolute symlink creation.
Test filesystem migration tests/documentation_examples/mod.rs, tests/toolchain/scratch.rs, tests/toolchain/smoke/*, tests/toolchain/support/*
Replace direct filesystem calls with the shared helpers. Add tests for absolute symlinks and inaccessible parent directories. Extract stdin-based process execution into run_with_stdin.
Whitaker lint and CI setup Makefile, .github/workflows/ci.yml, AGENTS.md, docs/developers-guide.md, docs/adrs/adr-0001-bootstrap-polean-from-the-combobulate-scaffold.md, tests/toolchain/bdd.rs

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Adopt Whitaker (installer 0.2.11)" names the main change: adding Whitaker as a warnings-denied lint gate, which the Makefile, CI workflow, and ADR all implement. It does not follow the roadmap or issue reference rules, but neither applies: the description references DF12-89 as the programme context, not a roadmap item number in the title format, and no GitHub issue number is used to fix an issue. The title is specific and accurate.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description states that it adopts Whitaker in polean and lists the Makefile target, the CI install step, the test filesystem changes through the ambient shim, the stdin refactor, the module-doc change, the AGENTS.md and developer guide updates, and the local gate results. It matches the changeset closely.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 25 functions across 9 files. (6 skipped: 6 unsupported.)
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
Mark this check as PASS. The changed filesystem behaviour has substantive tests in tests/toolchain/support/tests.rs: missing paths return absence, existing paths return presence, ENOTDIR and permission failures do not become absence, absolute symlinks resolve, and parent-resolution failures do not become absence. The capability wrappers are exercised by the scratch, support, smoke, and documentation corpus tests. The stdin refactor remains covered by the smoke scenario that supplies input and validates expected decisions. Whitaker installation and lint wiring are third-party/tooling configuration, not behaviour that requires a separate test of Whitaker itself.
Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
PASS — The PR changes developer tooling and CI by adding the Whitaker lint gate, updates docs/developers-guide.md, and adjusts test-only filesystem helpers. No production paths or user-facing behaviour changed, and docs/users-guide.md is unchanged. The custom user-facing documentation requirement therefore does not apply.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
Pass the check. The developer guide documents the new lint-whitaker target, local whitaker-installer setup, wrapper usage, first-run requirements, pinned toolchain behaviour, and the cap-std filesystem boundary. ADR 0001 records the Whitaker adoption and updates the deferred decisions through an addendum. No new ExecPlan or completed roadmap item appears in the pull request, and no additional locale requires synchronisation.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
All modules introduced or modified by the pull request have module-level documentation. tests/toolchain/ambient.rs explains the capability-based filesystem shim and its relationship to the toolchain tests. tests/toolchain/bdd.rs::fixture now uses an inner doc comment that explains the fixture and its generated-lint purpose. The modified parent modules and nested test modules also retain clear //! documentation covering their purpose and role.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
Pass the testing check. Exercise the changed filesystem behaviour through integration tests in tests/toolchain/support/tests.rs: cover missing paths, readable paths, ENOTDIR, permission handling, absolute symlinks, and unresolved parents. Exercise the related scratch and tool-presence error paths in tests/toolchain/scratch.rs and tests/toolchain/smoke/tests.rs. Existing smoke tests also cover both stdin and no-stdin process execution. The Makefile and CI changes add a lint gate, not product runtime behaviour requiring a separate end-to-end test.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
Accept the explicit scenario tests. The changed filesystem shim has a small, auditable outcome table: successful parent resolution, NotFound/NotADirectory fallback, other resolution errors, absolute-symlink resolution, and root stripping. The tests cover missing, readable, ENOTDIR, permission, absolute-symlink, and inaccessible-parent cases. path_exists directly maps metadata outcomes. The PR introduces no lemma or proof assumption, and no broad input invariant requires a property test beyond these named scenarios.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
No compile-time behaviour is introduced. The authoritative diff contains no src/ or TypeScript changes; Rust changes are limited to test filesystem helpers, test assertions, a module-doc comment, and a runtime subprocess refactor. The existing describe output path remains unchanged, and the added tests use focused semantic assertions. A trybuild test and new snapshot are therefore not applicable.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
The change preserves the stated boundaries. Read operations such as ambient::metadata, ambient::read_to_string, path_exists, and read_repository_file return explicit io::Result or Result<..., String> values and do not write state. Write operations have visible command names such as create_dir, write, set_mode, remove_dir, and symlink, and propagate errors. beneath_root exposes path-resolution failures through io::Result rather than hiding them. The filesystem authority is isolated in the test-only ambient module. The process side effect remains explicit in run and the extracted run_with_stdin, with startup, write, and wait failures returned to the caller. No changed code introduces hidden mutation, implicit fallibility, global mutable state, or unrelated responsibilities.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
No domain code changes are present. The pull request changes CI, documentation, the Makefile, a development-only cap-std dependency, and test support code under tests/. The diff contains no changes under src/, so it does not introduce infrastructure, filesystem, transport, or vendor concerns into the domain model.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass. The pull request changes CI, lint configuration, documentation, and test-only filesystem/process helpers. It does not change production source or introduce a production service, storage, queue, network, or asynchronous boundary. No production logging, metrics, tracing, or alerts are required by this check.

Handle procfs-restricted environments without a major CI failure claim.
cap-primitives 4.0.2 tries /proc/self/fd first, then read and write handles. It has no parent-directory fallback. A non-root process can therefore fail to restore a 0o000 directory when procfs is unavailable.
The repository runs its Linux jobs on ubuntu-latest and does not restrict procfs, so this is a narrow environmental edge case. Keep the retained-handle correction, but downgrade the finding to minor.
