Summary

ci-telemetry-finish now reports the test phase's sccache hit rate and warns when the phase or the job's disk looks unhealthy. It builds on #634 to #636 and changes no existing field.

  • Test-phase hit rate. A second sccache-report call right after the build writes a snapshot (own stats-file and text-file, summary: 'false'). sccache's counters are cumulative, so finish subtracts the snapshot from the final statistics. New nullable fields: sccache_test_hits, sccache_test_misses, sccache_test_compile_requests, sccache_test_hit_ratio, sccache_test_problem (counter-reset, snapshot-invalid, snapshot-unreadable, snapshot-shape). sccache-report needs no code change; its README and changelog document the second call.
  • Least free disk. The record already carries min_free_disk_mib (the sampler's minimum over the watched volume), so no new measurement is needed; it gets a threshold.
  • Thresholds are inputs with defaults. test-hit-ratio-min 0.80, test-min-compile-requests 20, min-free-disk-mib 3072, thresholds (main-push by default, or always or never). A breach is a ::warning title=ci-telemetry-threshold:: annotation and the threshold_breaches field (none, or a comma-separated subset of test_hit_ratio and min_free_disk). It never fails the job.

Why these defaults (measured, and thin)

Records read from CI logs on 22 October 2026:

Job Whole-job hit ratio Least free disk
whitaker linux-full, main push (2 runs) 1.0 (1704 hits, 0 misses) 5474 and 5527 MiB
axinite tests, wasm-wit-compat (4 cores) 0.9992, 0.9981 74703 to 93526 MiB
axinite small jobs (2 cores) 1.0 9789 to 10290 MiB
whitaker windows-compat 0.0467 (116 hits, 2370 misses) not sampled

cuprum's lint-test ran out of disk with about 2 GB free. 3072 MiB sits between that failure and the smallest healthy Linux figure (5.4 GiB). 0.80 for the test phase is conservative against warm figures of 0.998 to 1.0. No test-phase delta existed before this PR; the pilot below gives the first (0.9235 on a partly warm branch). I will retune the 0.80 default from further measured runs rather than from this one. Grafana alert rules come in a follow-up in leynos/grafana ("alert rules for sccache_test_hit_ratio and min_free_disk_mib breaches on ci_runner_telemetry"); not opened here.

Compatibility with the jm5-ci-obs-phase2 reader

Schema 1 is unchanged and the new fields are additive. schemas/ci_runner_telemetry.schema.json in leynos/grafana has no additionalProperties: false, and src/ci_obs/runner_telemetry.py validates only its named field lists and schema == 1. Checked read-only: a script (not committed) archives grafana's src and schemas from origin/main into a scratch directory, builds records with this branch's finish script and passes their marker lines to grafana's reading_from_text. All three cases read present:

  • no snapshot: every sccache_test_* field is null, and every pre-existing field is identical to a record built with a snapshot (also pinned by test_old_fields_are_identical_with_and_without_a_snapshot);
  • snapshot: 6 hits, 0 misses, 12 compile requests, ratio 1.0;
  • breach: ratio 0.05 over 100 requests, threshold_breaches is test_hit_ratio.

Nothing was opened or changed in grafana.

Null without a snapshot

With no sccache-stats-build.json, sccache_test_hits, _misses, _compile_requests, _hit_ratio and _problem are null (test_without_a_snapshot_every_new_field_is_null). threshold_breaches is also null unless thresholds apply (a push to the default branch, or thresholds: always). When they do apply without a snapshot, the free-disk threshold is still judged, because it needs no snapshot, so the field reads none or min_free_disk (test_no_snapshot_on_a_main_push_still_judges_only_disk).

Pilot run

Pilot branch telemetry-pilot-nested-cargo on leynos/whitaker (never merged; one workflow, pinned to this branch's head 4ee790b): build whitaker-common, snapshot, build whitaker-installer as the "test phase", final report, with deliberately low thresholds (test-hit-ratio-min: 1.01, min-free-disk-mib: 999999, thresholds: always). The workflow ran on a push to that branch rather than workflow_dispatch, because a dispatch needs the workflow on the default branch.

Run: https://github.com/leynos/whitaker/actions/runs/39693479682

The record carries sccache_test_hits 169, sccache_test_misses 14, sccache_test_compile_requests 223, sccache_test_hit_ratio 0.9235, threshold_breaches test_hit_ratio,min_free_disk, and the job succeeded with two annotations:

  • test-phase sccache hit ratio 0.9235 over 223 compile requests is below 1.01
  • least free disk 9467 MiB is below 999999 MiB

Validation

make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make markdownlint and make test (4557 passed, 158 skipped) pass on this branch. New tests: tests/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py (17 cases); test_the_manifest_declares_and_forwards_the_sccache_inputs is extended for the new inputs.

Summary by Sourcery

Measure test-phase sccache performance and surface configurable disk and cache-health warnings without changing existing telemetry compatibility.

New Features:

  • Report additive test-phase sccache hit, miss, compile-request, ratio, and measurement-problem fields from post-build snapshots.
  • Add configurable sccache hit-ratio and minimum-free-disk thresholds with advisory breach reporting.

Enhancements:

  • Keep threshold evaluation non-failing and limit it by default to pushes on the repository's default branch.
  • Preserve schema 1 and existing telemetry fields when test-phase snapshots are absent or unusable.

Documentation:

  • Document how to capture post-build sccache snapshots and configure test-phase telemetry thresholds.

Tests:

  • Add comprehensive unit, integration, property-based, and snapshot coverage for test-phase deltas, threshold evaluation, warnings, and compatibility behavior.

ci-telemetry-finish now subtracts a post-build sccache-report snapshot
from the final statistics to report the test phase's hits, misses,
compile requests and hit ratio, and judges the record against
thresholds supplied as inputs (test hit ratio 0.80 over at least 20
compile requests, least free disk 3072 MiB). A breach on a push to the
default branch is a ::warning:: annotation and the threshold_breaches
field; it never fails the job.

The new fields are additive to schema 1 and null when no snapshot is
supplied. sccache-report needs no code change: a second call with its
own files and summary off is the snapshot, now documented.

Summary

Add test-phase sccache telemetry to ci-telemetry-finish.

  • Capture a post-build sccache snapshot and calculate test-phase hits, misses, compile requests and hit ratio.
  • Record nullable fields and a problem code when snapshot data is unavailable or invalid.
  • Add configurable thresholds for hit ratio, minimum compile requests and free disk. Apply them by default only to pushes to the default branch.
  • Emit non-blocking warning annotations and record breaches in threshold_breaches.
  • Preserve schema 1 and existing fields.
  • Document the additional sccache-report call, inputs, outputs and threshold behaviour.
  • Add tests for snapshot deltas, invalid data, fallback jobs, threshold gating, warnings and legacy fields.

Walkthrough

Add test-phase sccache telemetry by subtracting a post-build snapshot from final counters. Record the resulting fields and evaluate configurable hit-ratio and free-disk thresholds. Report breaches as warnings without failing the job.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 91.07% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 56 functions across 4 files. (7 skipped: 7 unsupported.)

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

Accept the module documentation. Every changed Python module has a module-level docstring. The new test_phase.py docstring explains its sccache and threshold purpose, its relationship to sccache-report, schema 1, and warning output. The test modules and the updated finish.py also document their purpose and component relationships.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Accept the testing coverage. Exercise file-based collection through finish, including valid deltas, empty phases, counter resets, fallback jobs, invalid and malformed snapshots, and the added unreadable path (tests/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:152-170, 173-180, 330-342). Exercise the observable finish.main() boundary with valid sampler state, exact disk warnings, both warnings in order, and exit code 0 (tests/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:282-327). Cover threshold modes, defaults, non-finite values, exact ratios, warning text, and property-based invariants. Verify every new action input default and environment mapping (tests/test_ci_telemetry_sccache.py:513-543). Prior failure addressed: Add and assert the unreadable snapshot path, disk-only main-boundary warning, simultaneous warnings with order and exit 0, valid sampler state, and all five new threshold/build input mappings.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Accept the testing change. The PR adds Hypothesis property tests for delta(): generated non-negative build counters and increments verify exact deltas, the rounded hit ratio, None for zero attempts, and counter-reset for every lower final counter (.github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/tests/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:400-443). The existing example tests remain for empty phases, normal deltas, resets, and threshold boundaries. No exhaustive proof is required because the change introduces no proof lemma or formal proof assumption. Prior failure addressed: The reviewed range now adds two Hypothesis tests at test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:403-443 covering generated increments, ratios, zero attempts, and all three counter positions below the build snapshot.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

The testing requirement is addressed. The pull request adds a Syrupy snapshot at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/tests/__snapshots__/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.ambr:1-33 for none, test_hit_ratio, min_free_disk, and combined breach states. The snapshot records the structured threshold_breaches value and warning lines from fixed records. It omits dynamic telemetry fields. The test also keeps focused assertions for nullable fields, threshold logic, and the zero exit result. Prior failure addressed: Added test_breach_states_and_warnings_are_pinned with fixed fixtures and a four-variant Syrupy snapshot covering breach values and warning output; dynamic telemetry is excluded.

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Strengthen the tests before merge. The manifest test now asserts CT_TEST_HIT_RATIO_MIN, CT_TEST_MIN_COMPILE_REQUESTS, and CT_MIN_FREE_DISK_MIB mappings at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/tests/test_ci_telemetry_sccache.py:534-539. The end-to-end disk test now runs F.main(), asserts the exact disk warning, one telemetry marker, and return code 0 at test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:301-312. However, no test sends custom CT_TEST_HIT_RATIO_MIN or CT_TEST_MIN_COMPILE_REQUESTS through F.finish() or the action wiring and verifies the resulting breach decision. test_non_finite_numbers_fall_back_to_the_default and test_thresholds_are_inputs call T.breaches directly, and test_a_small_phase_is_not_judged omits hit and miss counts, so it does not prove that the minimum-request threshold controls a complete record. The warning test at :385-397 only supplies a pre-populated threshold_breaches value to print_marker; it does not exercise custom judgement wiring.

Resolution

Add finish-level tests that provide complete sccache snapshots and custom CT_TEST_HIT_RATIO_MIN and CT_TEST_MIN_COMPILE_REQUESTS values. Assert that F.finish() records threshold_breaches for a ratio below the custom floor and suppresses the breach when the compile-request count is below the custom minimum. Keep the manifest assertions and the end-to-end disk warning test.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Keep the FAIL. The implementation now injects a narrow read_snapshot callable into test_phase.collect at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/test_phase.py:69-91, and finish passes the filesystem reader at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/finish.py:236-240. print_marker now receives and uses env, and emit passes it at finish.py:256-265,309-317. However, the new test suite still exercises snapshot collection through real files: run() writes files and calls F.finish() at tests/test_ci_telemetry_test_phase.py:75-97, and no test replaces the injected reader or proves collect's read-only seam. This does not satisfy the explicit test-boundary requirement.

Resolution

Add direct test_phase.collect tests that pass a fake read_snapshot callable, assert that the callable is used, and cover Outcome values for absent, unreadable, invalid and malformed snapshots without filesystem access. Retain the end-to-end file tests for the real boundary. Keep the existing explicit-environment marker test.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

The user guide now documents the post-build snapshot, test-phase fields, threshold defaults and warning behaviour at docs/users-guide.md:405-435. However, it does not document the new sccache-build-stats-file input or pass it to ci-telemetry-finish; the action defines that input at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/action.yml:22-29. Users who choose a non-default snapshot path therefore lack the required user-guide configuration.

Resolution

Update the CI telemetry section in docs/users-guide.md to name sccache-build-stats-file, state its sccache-stats-build.json default, and pass it in the finish-step example. Keep the existing documentation for the post-build report, test-phase fields, threshold modes and non-blocking warnings.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

The prior documentation failure remains partially unresolved. docs/developers-guide.md:688-720 now documents the test-phase boundary, snapshot subtraction, nullable fields, threshold inputs, warning-only behaviour, explicit environment passing, and test maintenance. The ADR addendum is present at docs/adr/0008-ci-telemetry-start-and-finish.md:49-67. However, the developer guide does not state the threshold defaults: 0.80, 20, 3072, and main-push. The values appear in action.yml and the user guide, but the custom check requires the developer guide to document the internal contract and the prior failure explicitly required inputs and defaults.

Resolution

Add the threshold defaults and the default main-push applicability mode to the test-phase section of docs/developers-guide.md. State the mapping for each input, its default, and that main-push evaluates only pushes to the repository default branch. Retain the existing ADR addendum and other contract details.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

The prior architecture failure remains unresolved. The new .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/test_phase.py imports the infrastructure parser sccache_stats and handles Outcome, normalize, and StatsError at lines 21 and 69-94. Its threshold policy reads raw CT_* and GITHUB_* environment keys at lines 97-149 and 195-200 instead of receiving typed settings and job context. Its annotations function constructs GitHub workflow command syntax at lines 170-202. The finish adapter passes the raw environment and a filesystem-backed reader into this module at .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/finish.py:223-241, and prints the returned transport lines at lines 256-265. The pull request introduced this module and its integration, so the coupling is introduced by the reviewed changes.

Resolution

Separate pure test-phase policy from adapters. Pass typed test metrics, threshold settings, and explicit job context to the policy functions. Keep environment parsing and sccache_stats file parsing in finish.py or a dedicated adapter, and translate failures into domain metrics or explicit snapshot problems. Move ::warning title=ci-telemetry-threshold:: formatting into the GitHub output adapter. Test the policy with constructed values, without environment names, filesystem paths, sccache parser types, or GitHub command syntax.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

The pull request introduces a storage hand-off without tracing it. finish() now reads the post-build snapshot through test_phase.collect() and then evaluates thresholds (.github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/finish.py:232-241). The new collector performs snapshot reading, normalization, and counter-delta calculation (scripts/test_phase.py:71-102). The repository contains no tracing or span instrumentation for these operations. The bounded telemetry fields and warning annotations do not satisfy the required tracing at the storage boundary.

Resolution

Add a sccache-test-phase.snapshot span around snapshot read, normalization, and delta calculation. Add a ci-telemetry.thresholds span around threshold applicability and breach evaluation. Record only bounded attributes, such as snapshot_outcome, threshold mode, breach names, and elapsed time. Do not record the file path or raw error text. Preserve the existing warning annotations and telemetry fields.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR extends ci-telemetry-finish with additive test-phase sccache metrics by subtracting a post-build snapshot from final cumulative statistics, and adds configurable, non-failing warnings for low test-phase hit rates and minimum free disk; action wiring, tests, and usage documentation cover the new behavior.

CodeScene flagged test_phase.py for a mean cyclomatic complexity of
4.22 across 9 functions. Extract the branch test, the two breach
checks and the two warning texts; behaviour is unchanged and the 17
tests still pass.

test_phase.collect takes a reader for the post-build snapshot instead of
touching the file system, and finish passes it. print_marker and emit
take the environment explicitly. The hit ratio is judged on the exact
quotient, non-finite numbers fall back to defaults and an unknown
thresholds mode warns. Tests cover every manifest mapping, end-to-end
disk and double breaches, an unreadable snapshot, Hypothesis properties
for delta and Syrupy snapshots of the breach states. The users guide,
developers guide and an ADR 0008 addendum document the snapshot,
fields, thresholds and test maintenance.

test_phase is now pure policy over typed Thresholds, JobContext and a
Snapshot value; threshold_settings parses the CT_* and GITHUB_*
environment, turns an sccache reading into a snapshot and formats
workflow commands. The hit-ratio warning shows the exact quotient and
its counts, and the conditionals CodeScene flagged are split into small
helpers. Tests add direct collect cases over constructed snapshots, the
adapter's reading of each failure, and custom floors and minimums
through finish. The users and developers guides name the snapshot input,
the threshold defaults and each field's null condition.

@coderabbitai Please give a merge verdict for head 2786515. Since your CHANGES_REQUESTED review at 0e3a44f: both Error rows are addressed (Testing (Overall): custom hit-ratio floors and minimum request counts driven through F.finish(); Unit Architecture: test_phase.py is pure policy over typed Thresholds, JobContext and Snapshot, with a new threshold_settings.py adapter for environment parsing, sccache reading and ::warning:: formatting), and so are the Domain Architecture, User-Facing and Developer Documentation warnings. CodeScene is green, CI is green, and make test passes (4584). The Observability warning asks for tracing spans; this stdlib-only telemetry script has no tracing infrastructure and reports through workflow annotations. Does any ❌ row or blocking finding remain at this head?

@pandalump Fix one new runtime compatibility blocker before merging head 2786515b. The two previous ❌ findings are addressed, but I cannot give this head a clean merge verdict.

New blocker

In .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/test_phase.py, Line 50 introduces:

type Snapshot = typ.Mapping[str, int] | str | None

This syntax requires Python 3.12 or later. The developer guide supports Python 3.10 or later. The action selects python3 or python from PATH without enforcing a minimum version.

On Python 3.10 or 3.11, importing test_phase raises SyntaxError before finish.main() can handle errors. The action then exits non-zero. This breaks the documented “never fails a job” contract.

Preserve the supported runtime with:

Snapshot: typ.TypeAlias = typ.Mapping[str, int] | str | None

Verify the finish action on Python 3.10 and 3.11 after this change.

Previous findings

  • Testing (Overall): addressed. Complete snapshots and custom floors and minimum request counts now pass through F.finish().
  • Unit Architecture and Domain Architecture: addressed. The policy accepts constructed values. The adapter handles environment parsing, snapshot normalization, and workflow-command formatting.
  • User-Facing and Developer Documentation: addressed. The comparison confirms the snapshot input, defaults, applicability, and separate null conditions.
  • Both inline findings from 0e3a44f: addressed. Warning messages include counts, and the nullability documentation is corrected.
  • Observability: do not treat this warning as a merge blocker. Workflow annotations and structured telemetry fit this stdlib-only script. Adding tracing infrastructure is not necessary for this change.

Verified provider state

CI, CodeScene, and Gecko checks report success at 2786515b. I did not rerun repository tests.

GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED. The published pre-merge table still describes 0e3a44f; it does not assess this head. This reply does not change approval status or refresh that table.

Resolve the Python compatibility regression, then request a review of the updated head.

📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.

You are interacting with an AI system.

The type statement is a SyntaxError before Python 3.12 and the action runs
whichever python3 the runner provides, so a failed import would break the
never-fail contract. Use typing.TypeAlias; importing finish succeeds on
3.10 and 3.11.

@coderabbitai Please give a merge verdict for head c8c3a27. Since your last reply, the Snapshot alias uses typing.TypeAlias so test_phase imports on Python 3.10 and 3.11 (checked: import finish succeeds on both; make check-fmt, lint, typecheck, markdownlint and test pass). CI and CodeScene are green. Does any ❌ row or blocking finding remain at this head?

@wafflecat-df12 Proceed with merging head c8c3a274d8749893643dd514817d41f32f52bc5f once the repository’s review requirements are satisfied. No blocking code finding remains from this review conversation.

  • Python compatibility: addressed. Line 52 of .github/actions/ci-telemetry-finish/scripts/test_phase.py now uses typ.TypeAlias. This is the only change since 2786515b and removes the Python 3.12-only syntax.
  • Previous ❌ findings: addressed. The Testing (Overall) and Unit Architecture findings remain addressed. The architecture and documentation corrections are unchanged.
  • Observability: not blocking. Do not add tracing infrastructure for this stdlib-only script.
  • Checks: green. CI, CodeScene and Gecko succeeded at this head. All eight review threads are resolved.

Distinguish the merge recommendation from the published review state. The old pre-merge table still displays two Error rows, but those rows do not describe this head. GitHub still reports CHANGES_REQUESTED. This reply does not change that status or refresh the table.

I verified the source change and GitHub checks. I did not rerun tests or the Python 3.10/3.11 imports; those runtime checks are your reported results.
