Summary

This branch standardizes the Whitaker Rust workspace on en-GB-oxendict spelling while preserving the SARIF 2.1.0 wire format. It updates public API names, installer filesystem handling and tracing failures, adds numeric-boundary and compile-contract tests, and documents the 0.3.0 migration and test-timeout policy.

Review walkthrough

Validation

The current candidate is ff994dfbecf3c729f41dc183dcef714edb0337d6 on base f7a5a93132e989490021cbacbb9cc865e40a467f. Its local gates passed
sequentially: make check-fmt, make lint, make typecheck, make test
(1,852 passed, 5 skipped), make test-workflow-contracts (652 passed),
make markdownlint including spelling, and make nixie.

Hosted Actions run 39024186519, attempt 1, passed linux-full, windows-compat, and
coverage-check. The CodeScene Code Health Review passed (result 7997031), as
did Gecko Security Review. Kody and Sourcery were skipped by their configured
checks.

Issue #398 is closed on an exact-head Rustdoc census of 264/264 touched
functions and methods documented (100%), with Rustdoc generation and doctests
passing. CodeRabbit's separate internal coverage metric was unavailable; the
reproducible census and its scope are recorded in the issue.

The current-head CodeRabbit review 5557581835 is APPROVED on this exact
head and has no inline findings. CodeRabbit confirmed the three repaired rows
and accepted the refreshed Observability warning as a non-blocking deferral to
open issue #422, which tracks
the persisted metrics compatibility decision (row reconciliation). The refreshed walkthrough now records ff994df as its reviewed candidate; its remaining warning has an explicit accepted disposition.

The change is mergeable with minor follow-ups. The open items are a possible warning-denied lint failure in a production-only build, a missing justification for a lint suppression, a broad spelling exception, and a timeout statement in the developers guide that conflicts with the 45-minute allowances.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 90.52% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 327 functions across 94 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

Pass the testing check. The prior installer gaps are covered by the parameterized dependency_query_errors_are_propagated test in installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs:23-153. It covers Binstall availability, post-Binstall verification, post-Cargo verification, repository verification, and companion refresh. Each case asserts the original error, forbids success output, and calls StubExecutor::assert_finished(). Additional tests cover the successful Binstall fallback, PATH discovery and failure categories, tracing filters, numeric boundaries, SARIF wire-format round trips, and renamed API compile contracts. These tests exercise observable behaviour and reject plausible incorrect implementations. Prior failure addressed: installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs:23-153 adds all five required query-error cases. Each asserts the propagated error, no success message, and executor.assert_finished(), with exact expected calls preventing later installation steps.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

PASS. The pull request documents its changed user-facing behaviour. docs/users-guide.md:9-16 signposts the source-breaking 0.3.0 migration and SARIF compatibility. docs/users-guide.md:91-126 documents Windows PATHEXT handling, --verbose, --quiet, stderr diagnostics, and ordered PATH scanning. docs/v0-3-0-migration-guide.md:9-155 maps the changed public Rust APIs, preserves SARIF wire keys, and explains the check_dylint_tools result and error contract. The removed UsageCategory surface is in the private no_std_fs_operations::usage module, so it is not an external user-facing API.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

Pass the developer-documentation check. Document the numeric and span boundary contract in docs/developers-guide.md:3625-3656 and docs/whitaker-dylint-suite-design.md:1293-1319. These sections name line_range_byte_offsets, describe invalid ranges and unrepresentable offsets, retain the i64::MAX, u32::MAX, and compiler-offset rules, identify the 64-bit guard, and list the diagnostic-integer, predicate-weight, span-range, line-range, and conditional-branch tests. The developer guide also documents the installer dependency boundary, PATH scan abstraction, tracing configuration, coverage profile requirements, and nextest timeout policy. The design document records the lint boundary decisions. The diff adds no new execplan or roadmap item; existing execplans receive historical spelling and API-reference corrections only. Prior failure addressed: Both docs/developers-guide.md:3634-3656 and docs/whitaker-dylint-suite-design.md:1299-1319 now document line_range_byte_offsets, invalid and unrepresentable results, the 64-bit guard, and all required boundary-test names.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

All changed Rust modules have a module-level //! doc comment. The head scan found no changed .rs file without one. The new dependency module explains its purpose and installation fallback in installer/src/deps/mod.rs:1-5; the install-flow helper identifies its role in installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs:1; and the tracing module identifies the CLI component in installer/src/tracing_config.rs:1. The added crate documentation also explains feature-gated component relationships in crates/module_max_lines/src/lib.rs:1-5. Changed Python modules also start with module docstrings. Undocumented head files are unchanged UI fixtures or vendor files, so the pull request does not introduce that gap.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

Accept the testing coverage. Compile-contract tests exercise the renamed common, bumpy-road, SARIF, and installer APIs, including legacy-name failures (for example common/tests/public_api_contract.rs:3-9 and crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/api_contract.rs:3-10). SARIF tests cross the JSON boundary and verify canonical wire keys, decoding, round trips, and generated cases in crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/wire_contracts.rs:28-193. Numeric tests cover signed and unsigned limits and unrepresentable spans in crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/numeric.rs:74-141. Installer tests cover PATH ordering and failure categories, dependency-query errors, fallback errors, and success-message invariants in installer/src/deps/path_tests.rs:235-423, installer/src/deps/availability_tests.rs:51-198, and installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs:123-190. Tracing tests verify filtering and initialization failures, while installer/tests/tracing_cli.rs:212-278 runs the real installer binary with isolated fake tools and checks exit status, stderr routing, verbosity, and ANSI/path leakage. The nextest profiles explicitly include these compile contracts with bounded, non-retried allowances in .config/nextest.toml:57-63 and :128-134. No explicit testing failure condition is introduced.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

PASS — the introduced range and ordering invariants have suitable coverage. crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/wire_contracts.rs:113-193 uses proptest to generate varied URIs, optional fields, and non-empty artefact lists, then checks canonical SARIF keys and JSON round trips. installer/src/deps/path_tests.rs:366-424 uses generated PATH layouts to check first-match and stop-after-match behaviour, including failure ordering. The numeric conversion contracts use small boundary tables at crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/numeric.rs:74-141 and crates/conditional_max_n_branches/src/driver/numeric.rs:19-35, where the meaningful cases are complete. The diff introduces no new lemma or formal-proof assumption that requires exhaustive proof.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

PASS. The changed externally visible Rust APIs have trybuild coverage. common/tests/public_api_contract.rs:5-8 covers renamed pass and legacy-fail APIs. crates/bumpy_road_function/tests/api_contract.rs:5-8 covers normalize_settings. crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/api_contract.rs:5-9 covers renamed types, fields, and builder methods. installer/tests/ui.rs:22-28 covers the dependency-check Result contract and exhaustive InstallerError handling. Each compile-fail fixture has a focused .stderr expectation. SARIF output uses stable semantic assertions and property-based round trips in crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/wire_contracts.rs:15-26 and 28-193; the tests reject Rust-name wire keys and retain artifactLocation and artifacts. Tracing tests assert stream routing, verbosity, diagnostic fields, and absence of temporary paths and ANSI escapes in installer/src/tracing_config.rs:74-143 and installer/tests/tracing_cli.rs:242-279. These assertions avoid brittle snapshots while the trybuild .stderr files provide focused UI snapshots.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

PASS. Address the prior tracing failure in the reviewed code. configure_tracing now returns Result<(), TracingInitializationError> and maps try_init() at installer/src/tracing_config.rs:24-35. main reports the error and exits before run at installer/src/main.rs:36-45. The child-process test at installer/src/tracing_config.rs:197-228 forces a second global subscriber and checks the reported error. Dependency queries return diagnostics without tracing side-effects; the availability test verifies zero events at installer/src/deps/availability_tests.rs:51-78. Command execution, filesystem lookup, installation, and errors use explicit interfaces and Result values. Prior failure addressed: configure_tracing maps try_init() to TracingInitializationError; main handles it before run (installer/src/tracing_config.rs:24-35; installer/src/main.rs:36-45). A child-process test verifies the registration failure.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

No domain-architecture violation is introduced. Keep the current separation: bumpy-road analysis remains pure and independent of rustc_* APIs (crates/bumpy_road_function/src/analysis.rs:1-6), while compiler and diagnostic integration stays in the driver (crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/mod.rs:8-30). Keep installer command, PATH, filesystem, and tracing concerns behind injected or application-boundary code (installer/src/deps/mod.rs:23-44, installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs:10-40). Treat whitaker_sarif as the protocol adapter; it explicitly models SARIF and pins wire keys with Serde attributes (crates/whitaker_sarif/src/lib.rs:1-13, crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/location.rs:42-55, crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/run.rs:49-55). The changed core logic does not add HTTP, database, filesystem, environment, queue, or client-specific concerns.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

FAIL: Add aggregate observability for the new installer outcomes. The reviewed range adds dependency availability queries, PATH-scan failure categories, repository-release verification, cargo binstall fallback, source fallback, and post-install verification failures in installer/src/deps/mod.rs and installer/src/deps/install.rs. These paths return new errors or select different install outcomes, so they affect externally observable installer reliability. The new dependency_check.rs emits bounded debug fields for PATH failures, but it records no metrics. The only metrics remain the unchanged success-only InstallMetrics counters and total duration in installer/src/install_metrics.rs:1-37,136-164; write_install_metrics is reached only after the suite installation succeeds in installer/src/main.rs:143-177 and installer/src/install_flow.rs:319-347. The diff contains no metrics implementation changes. Maintainers therefore cannot aggregate dependency availability, PATH failure categories, fallback outcomes, or failed installations.

Resolution

Add bounded metrics at the dependency-query and installation decision boundaries. Record dependency status outcomes, PATH failure categories, repository installation, cargo binstall, source fallback, verification failures, and final failed or degraded outcomes. Use fixed labels such as tool, outcome, and failure_category; exclude paths, URLs, and error strings from labels. Preserve the existing success duration metrics. Add tests for every outcome and document the metric names and allowed label values.

Keep StdFsUsage::category live in production builds.

The production diagnostics path reads only operation(). The test-only accessor is the only explicit read of category, so make lint can report it as dead code under -D warnings. Read category in production or remove the field.

Use a capability-scoped filesystem boundary for metadata.

is_executable_file calls ambient std::fs::metadata while scanning PATH. Replace this filesystem access with an injected cap_std boundary and use the repository’s path abstraction.

cat > /tmp/sarif-wire-regression.md <<EOF
## Summary

Add regression tests that protect the SARIF JSON wire names after the Rust API rename from \`Artifact\` to \`Artefact\`.

## Rationale

The Rust fields now use \`artefact_location\` and \`artefacts\`, while the SARIF contract must continue to use \`artifactLocation\` and \`artifacts\`. Round-trip tests can pass when both serialization and deserialization use an incorrect renamed key. Empty collections also do not prove the serialized collection key.

## Affected areas

- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/location.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/run.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/builders/run_builder.rs\`
- SARIF model and builder tests in \`crates/whitaker_sarif\`

## Required changes

- Serialize a \`PhysicalLocation\` with a non-empty \`artefact_location\`.
- Assert that JSON contains \`artifactLocation\` and does not contain \`artefact_location\`.
- Deserialize canonical JSON containing \`artifactLocation\` and assert that \`PhysicalLocation::artefact_location\` is populated.
- Serialize a \`Run\` with a non-empty artefact collection, preferably through \`RunBuilder::with_artefact\`.
- Assert that JSON contains \`artifacts\` and does not contain \`artefacts\`.
- Deserialize canonical JSON containing \`artifacts\`.
- Assert that \`RunBuilder::with_artefact\` stores the supplied artefact.

## Acceptance criteria

- Tests fail if either Serde rename is removed or changed.
- Tests cover serialization and deserialization for populated location and run values.
- Tests directly cover \`RunBuilder::with_artefact\`.

## Summary

Raise docstring coverage for functions touched by pull request `#363` to the required 80% threshold.

## Rationale

The docstring coverage check reports 69.07% coverage. It analyzed 97 functions across 50 files. The coverage gate requires at least 80%.

## Affected areas

- Rust functions changed by pull request `#363`.
- The documentation-coverage check configuration and report, as applicable.

## Required changes

- Identify each changed function that lacks a required docstring.
- Add accurate Rust documentation comments that describe the function contract, inputs, outputs, and relevant failure or boundary behavior.
- Keep comments synchronized with the renamed public APIs and current module layout.

## Acceptance criteria

- The docstring coverage check reports at least 80% for the pull-request scope.
- Added docstrings describe behavior rather than restating identifiers.
- Documentation validation passes.

## Summary

Add behavioural tests through the public SARIF builders and JSON boundary for the renamed Rust API.

## Rationale

The externally consumed SARIF contract requires \`physicalLocation.artifactLocation\` and \`artifacts\`. Existing tests primarily inspect Rust fields or round-trip values. Those tests do not prove that populated output uses canonical SARIF property names.

## Affected areas

- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/builders/location_builder.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/builders/run_builder.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/location.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/run.rs\`
- Public SARIF integration or behavioural tests

## Required changes

- Build a non-empty location and run through public builder APIs.
- Serialize the result at the JSON boundary.
- Assert that \`physicalLocation.artifactLocation\` and \`artifacts\` exist.
- Assert that \`artefactLocation\` and \`artefacts\` do not exist.
- Deserialize canonical SARIF JSON containing the canonical names and assert that Rust model values are populated.
- Add direct behavioural coverage for \`RunBuilder::with_artefact\`.

## Acceptance criteria

- The test exercises public builders and serialized JSON.
- The test fails if the canonical property names change.
- The test verifies both serialization and deserialization of populated values.

## Summary

Add property or equivalent bounded-proof coverage for SARIF wire-name invariants and range-boundary conversions introduced in pull request `#363`.

## Rationale

The SARIF models must always serialize Rust fields \`artefact_location\` and \`artefacts\` as \`artifactLocation\` and \`artifacts\`. The pull request also adds saturating \`usize\` to \`i64\` and \`u32\` conversions and rejects unrepresentable span offsets. Fixed examples do not cover the required input ranges.

## Affected areas

- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/location.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/run.rs\`
- \`crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/diagnostic.rs\`
- \`crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/segment_builder.rs\`
- \`crates/conditional_max_n_branches/src/driver.rs\`

## Required changes

- Generate SARIF locations and runs with varied URIs, optional fields, and non-empty artefact collections.
- Assert that serialized JSON always uses \`artifactLocation\` and \`artifacts\`, never \`artefactLocation\` or \`artefacts\`.
- Assert that canonical wire JSON deserializes and round-trips.
- Add boundary-focused cases at, below, and above \`i64::MAX\` and \`u32::MAX\`.
- Assert saturation or \`None\` exactly where the implementation specifies it.
- Add \`proptest\` as a \`whitaker_sarif\` development dependency, or use an equivalent exhaustive bounded proof.

## Acceptance criteria

- Tests cover varied SARIF values and populated collections.
- Tests cover all conversion boundaries named above.
- Tests fail for a wrong SARIF wire name or incorrect boundary result.

cat > /tmp/public-api-compile-contract.md <<EOF
## Summary

Add external compile-contract tests for public Rust API changes in pull request `#363`.

## Rationale

The pull request renames public APIs and removes \`rasterise_signal\`. Existing integration tests and doctests compile selected call sites, but they do not define the complete external API contract or intentional removal of legacy names.

## Affected areas

- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/lib.rs\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/model/\`
- \`crates/whitaker_sarif/src/builders/run_builder.rs\`
- \`common/src/lib.rs\`
- \`common/src/i18n/\`
- \`common/src/complexity_signal.rs\`
- \`crates/bumpy_road_function/src/analysis.rs\`

## Required changes

- Add a Rust compile-time test harness, such as \`trybuild\`, that compiles as an external API consumer.
- Add a pass case that constructs \`Artefact\`, \`ArtefactLocation\`, \`PhysicalLocation::artefact_location\`, and \`Run::artefacts\`.
- Add a pass case that calls \`RunBuilder::with_artefact\`.
- Cover the renamed public \`normalize_locale\`, \`normalize_settings\`, and \`rasterize_signal\` APIs where each crate exposes them.
- Add compile-fail cases for removed legacy names when the breaking API contract requires explicit rejection.
- Keep dynamic values out of snapshots or diagnostics.

## Acceptance criteria

- The harness compiles API-consumer pass cases against public crate exports.
- The harness verifies the renamed APIs named above.
- Compile-fail tests verify required legacy-name rejection.
- The tests remain stable across supported toolchains.

@coderabbitai Have the following now been resolved?

crates/no_std_fs_operations/src/usage/mod.rs (1)

74-74: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep StdFsUsage::category live in production builds.
The production diagnostics path reads only operation(). The test-only accessor is the only explicit read of category, so make lint can report it as dead code under -D warnings. Read category in production or remove the field.

🤖 Detailed instructions

Use a wyvern agent team to verify each finding against the current code and only fix it if needed. Fix any documentation issues using a scribe agent team. Fix only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes minimal, and validate. Use a scrutineer agent for execution of tests and summarizing the results.

In @crates/no_std_fs_operations/src/usage/mod.rs at line 74, Update StdFsUsage
so category is used in non-test production code, preventing it from being
reported as dead under strict linting; alternatively remove the field and its
test-only accessor if it is not needed. Preserve the existing production
diagnostics behavior centered on operation().

Use a capability-scoped filesystem boundary for metadata.
is_executable_file calls ambient std::fs::metadata while scanning PATH. Replace this filesystem access with an injected cap_std boundary and use the repository’s path abstraction.

@leynos Both findings are resolved in the current source.

 • crates/no_std_fs_operations/src/usage/mod.rs: StdFsUsage now contains only operation: String. The category field and its test-only accessor are removed. This prevents the reported production dead-code warning.

 • installer/src/deps/mod.rs: find_binary_in_directory opens each PATH entry as a cap_std::fs_utf8::Dir. Both is_executable_file variants accept that Dir and call directory.metadata(path). The code no longer calls ambient std::fs::metadata. The regular-file, executable-bit, and false-on-error behavior remain intact.

Validation was not run because this inspection environment cannot compile or execute repository tests.

Treat vanished PATH directories as ordinary misses while retaining
failure categories for other open errors. Add compile-time checks for
the installer dependency-query API and its removed legacy surface.

Give all discovered nested trybuild contracts a shared serial
45-minute allowance in both nextest profiles, and verify that the
workflow contract matches the configured test set.

Use an explicit `.exe` fixture when testing PATH continuation. Windows
expands extensionless names through `PATHEXT`, so the previous fixture
did not match any candidate. Keep this test focused on skipping a missing
directory and finding the later binary.

@coderabbitai please measure the acceptance criterion in issue #398 against this exact PR diff.

Published head: 0aaedc0; comparison base: f7a5a93.
Issue #398 requires at least 80% Rustdoc coverage of functions touched by this PR. Identify the coverage definition and exact denominator, documented count, percentage, and skipped functions with reasons. Check that the comments describe behavior rather than merely restating identifiers, and list any in-scope functions that still need documentation. State whether this exact candidate meets the 80% threshold.

Assessment-ID: PR363-DOC-COVERAGE-0aaedc0-20261017T093500Z.

This is a candidate-specific acceptance measurement, not a request for a formal PR review. Please echo the Assessment-ID and assessed base/head in your substantive reply.

Coverage definition and result

Use source-definition Rustdoc coverage, not rendered-public-API coverage:

Documented touched function definitions ÷ all touched surviving function definitions × 100.

A definition is touched when the diff changes its signature, body, attached attributes, or attached documentation. Count private functions, trait methods, nested functions, tests, fixtures, and platform-gated definitions. Count each definition once, regardless of parameterized executions.

This is a new measurement for this exact candidate. It does not reuse 89.07% or a previous candidate’s census.

Scanner and commands

The scanner used ast-grep 0.45.3 and Python 3.11.16. The Python orchestration matched diff hunks to AST ranges and attached Rustdoc comments.

git diff -M20% --name-status BASE HEAD
git diff -M20% --unified=0 BASE HEAD -- OLD_PATH NEW_PATH

ast-grep run --kind function_item \
 --lang rust --json=compact FILE

ast-grep run --kind function_signature_item \
 --lang rust --json=compact FILE

The scan recognized attached ///, /** … */, and literal #[doc = …] documentation. It did not count ordinary comments or module-level //! documentation as function Rustdoc.

The 20% rename threshold recognizes installer/src/deps.rs → installer/src/deps/mod.rs at 36% similarity. This avoids counting unchanged functions as touched merely because the file moved.

Skipped definitions and reasons

No touched surviving source function was deliberately skipped. In particular, private methods, tests, Windows-only functions, and trait implementations remained in scope.

Exclusion Reason
831 unchanged definitions in the inspected Rust files Neither the definition nor its attached documentation/attributes intersects the rename-aware diff.
Removed definitions No surviving head definition exists to document. Examples include rasterise_signal, StdFsUsage::category, UsageCategory::as_str, and usage_category_labels_are_stable.
Old names of renamed definitions Count the replacement definition at the head, not both names. Examples include normalise_locale → normalize_locale and with_artifact → with_artefact.
Closures and generated macro expansions These are not separate source function definitions.
Function-like text inside strings and documentation examples These are not repository function definitions.
Non-Rust content in 58 changed files Issue #398 scopes this measurement to Rust functions.

The two source functions inside proptest! were included manually, not skipped:

 • generated_physical_locations_keep_the_canonical_wire_key — Line 117.
 • generated_runs_keep_the_canonical_wire_key_and_round_trip — Line 153.

Both are in crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/wire_contracts.rs. Both have behavioral Rustdoc.

Functions that still need Rustdoc

Add attached Rustdoc to these 20 in-scope definitions. Ordinary comments inside their bodies do not satisfy the requirement.

File Functions

AGENTS.md, Line 197, requires Rustdoc on every public and private function and method. Passing 80% does not satisfy that stronger rule.

Documentation substance

The 244 count measures Rustdoc presence. It is not a claim that every comment meets the quality criterion.

The inspected comments generally describe behavior. Examples include numeric saturation, rejected span offsets, canonical SARIF keys, dependency-query errors, and tracing initialization failures. However, correct these specific gaps:

Location Required correction
installer/src/deps/mod.rs, is_dylint_link_installed — Line 365 Replace “skipped-entry classifications are traced here”. The function returns classifications through path_scan_failures; the command boundary emits tracing. Document the unresolved-PATH and Cargo-query error cases.
crates/no_unwrap_or_else_panic/src/context/mod.rs, summarize_context — Line 34 Replace the identifier-level summary with the actual contract: inspect HIR ancestry and derive is_test and in_main, including cfg(test) handling.
crates/whitaker_clones_core/src/index/tests.rs, shared_signature — Line 40 State what makes this fixture shared. The current comment adds little beyond the identifier. Describe its deterministic fingerprint input or its relationship to the other fixtures.
installer/src/deps/mod.rs, install_dylint_tools_with_output — Line 269; install_dylint_tools_with_options — Line 300 Document propagated query, installation, and source-policy failures. The current summaries describe output/injection but omit non-obvious Result failure semantics.

Also remove the # Parameters and # Returns boilerplate from crates/no_expect_outside_tests/src/context/mod.rs::summarize_context, Line 122. Its content is substantive, but those sections conflict with the repository’s documentation style.

Acceptance decision

Issue #398 criterion Result
At least 80% coverage Met by this exact-head census: 244/264 = 92.42%.
Accurate behavioral documentation Not fully met. Correct the gaps above.
Documentation validation passes Not yet verified.

The exact-head linux-full, windows-compat, and coverage-check jobs were still in progress when inspected. I did not run repository builds or documentation checks. make lint includes cargo doc; make test-doc runs doctests.

Keep #398 open until the quality corrections and exact-head documentation validation are complete. Rerun the automated coverage check if its own reported percentage is required for closure; do not label this independent census as that automated check’s result.

You are interacting with an AI system.

Add behavior-focused Rustdoc to functions changed by PR #363 and clarify
installer errors, HIR context, and PATH-scan behavior to satisfy its
coverage and documentation acceptance criteria.

@coderabbitai please reassess issue #398 acceptance on this exact PR diff. This is a coverage and documentation assessment, not a formal PR review request.

Assessment-ID: PR363-DOC-COVERAGE-ff994df-20261017T103614Z
Published head: ff994df
Comparison base: f7a5a93 (main)
Issue: #398
Prior assessment: #363 (comment)

The prior exact-head assessment on parent 0aaedc0f782b713f84d5d47b54fa4ddd26179e38 reported 244/264 documented functions (92.42%), above the 80% threshold, and identified 20 undocumented in-scope definitions plus five comment-quality corrections. Commit ff994dfbecf3c729f41dc183dcef714edb0337d6 adds documentation for those definitions across ten Rust files and corrects the comments.

The 20 definitions are push_depth_segment, push_flow_segment, and push_segment in crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/segment_builder.rs; install_missing_tools, cargo_fallback_mode, install_tool, install_tool_with_cargo, command_succeeds, and update_status_after_install in installer/src/deps/install.rs; SystemBinaryLocator::find_binary in installer/src/deps/mod.rs; check_dylint_tools_reports_installed_tools, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unusable_cargo_dylint_output, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unparsable_cargo_dylint_output, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unpinned_dylint_link, and check_dylint_tools_detects_dylint_link_via_pathext_suffix in installer/src/deps/path_tests.rs; InstallerError::clone in installer/src/error.rs; policy_and_io_errors_survive_a_clone in installer/src/error_tests.rs; and ensure_dylint_tools_skips_install_when_installed, ensure_dylint_tools_installs_missing_tools, and ensure_dylint_tools_propagates_install_failures in installer/src/tests/mod.rs.

Please rescan the PR-scoped Rustdoc coverage against this exact base/head and report the scope rule, denominator, documented count, percentage, and skipped definitions with reasons. Confirm whether the 80% criterion is met and whether the 20 new comments accurately explain each function's behavior, relevant error or boundary semantics, and rationale without boilerplate; also verify the five comment-quality corrections. Identify any remaining defect or access limitation with its path and qualified symbol, and provide a focused agent prompt only if work remains.

Please echo the Assessment-ID and assessed full base/head in your substantive reply. Do not start a formal review.

@wafflecat-df12 Accept the documentation work for this candidate on the evidence below: 264/264 touched definitions have Rustdoc (100.00%). The 20 previously undocumented definitions now have behavioral comments. The five comment-quality corrections are complete. Exact-head documentation validation passed.

Assessment-ID: PR363-DOC-COVERAGE-ff994df-20261017T103614Z

Coverage measurement

Use this scope rule:

Count each surviving source function or method whose signature, body, attached attributes, or attached documentation intersects the rename-aware base-to-head diff.

Include public and private functions, trait methods, nested functions, tests, fixtures, and platform-gated definitions. Count each source definition once, not once per parameterized execution.

Measure Exact-candidate result
Changed Rust files inspected 98
Files with counted definitions 83
Touched AST definitions 262
Additional source definitions inside proptest! 2
Denominator 264
Documented count 264
Undocumented in-scope definitions 0
Coverage 100.00%
Minimum documented count for 80% 212
AST parse errors 0

All inspected Rust files matched their exact-head Git blobs. This is a fresh measurement, not a percentage carried forward from the parent.

Scanner

The scan used ast-grep 0.45.3 and Python 3.11.16:

git diff -M20% --name-status BASE HEAD
git diff -M20% --unified=0 BASE HEAD -- OLD_PATH NEW_PATH
ast-grep run --kind function_item --lang rust --json=compact FILE
ast-grep run --kind function_signature_item --lang rust --json=compact FILE

Python matched diff hunks to definition ranges and attached documentation. Separate source inspection included both documented proptest! functions in crates/whitaker_sarif/tests/wire_contracts.rs.

The 20% rename threshold recognizes the installer dependency-module move. It prevents that move alone from marking every definition as touched.

Skipped definitions and reasons

No touched surviving source definition was skipped.

Exclusion Count or scope Reason
Unchanged definitions 831, including five signature-only declarations Neither the definition nor its attached documentation or attributes intersects the diff.
Removed definitions Base-only definitions No head definition remains to document.
Previous names of renamed definitions Replacement definitions counted at the head Avoid counting one renamed API twice.
Closures and generated macro expansions Not counted separately They are not separate source function definitions.
Function-like text in strings or examples Excluded It is not a repository function definition.
Non-Rust files 58 changed files This measurement covers Rustdoc on Rust functions.

The 20 new comments

All 20 now describe behavior rather than merely repeat identifiers. The comments use imperative summaries. They add error sections where needed without argument/return boilerplate.

File Verified definitions and contracts
crates/bumpy_road_function/src/driver/segment_builder.rs SegmentBuilder::push_depth_segment and SegmentBuilder::push_flow_segment identify the configured weights. SegmentBuilder::push_segment describes span omission and delayed-bug reporting.
installer/src/deps/install.rs install_missing_tools, cargo_fallback_mode, install_tool, install_tool_with_cargo, command_succeeds, and update_status_after_install describe installation selection, status refresh, command results, and relevant propagated errors.
installer/src/deps/mod.rs SystemBinaryLocator::find_binary describes process-PATH scanning and skipped-entry classification.
installer/src/deps/path_tests.rs check_dylint_tools_reports_installed_tools, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unusable_cargo_dylint_output, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unparsable_cargo_dylint_output, check_dylint_tools_rejects_unpinned_dylint_link, and check_dylint_tools_detects_dylint_link_via_pathext_suffix describe their availability assertions and fixture-creation errors.
installer/src/error.rs InstallerError::clone describes preservation of displayable details. It does not claim preservation of I/O source chains.
installer/src/error_tests.rs policy_and_io_errors_survive_a_clone describes the message-preservation assertion.
installer/src/tests/mod.rs ensure_dylint_tools_skips_install_when_installed, ensure_dylint_tools_installs_missing_tools, and ensure_dylint_tools_propagates_install_failures describe skip, progress-output, and failure-propagation behavior. Their error sections describe fixture I/O failures.

The short forwarding helpers do not need separate rationale paragraphs. Their design choices are evident from their implementations.

Five comment-quality corrections

Correction Result
installer/src/deps/mod.rs::is_dylint_link_installed Complete. Describes returned classifications, unresolved PATH failures, and Cargo-query errors. Removes the incorrect claim that this function emits tracing.
crates/no_unwrap_or_else_panic/src/context/mod.rs::summarize_context Complete. Describes HIR ancestry, cfg(test), test status, and main membership.
crates/whitaker_clones_core/src/index/tests.rs::shared_signature Complete. Identifies the deterministic [1, 2, 3, 4] input.
installer/src/deps/mod.rs::{install_dylint_tools_with_output, install_dylint_tools_with_options} Complete. Both document propagated query, installation, and source-policy errors.
crates/no_expect_outside_tests/src/context/mod.rs::summarize_context Complete. Removes parameter/return boilerplate and retains the behavioral contract and example.

Validation and acceptance

Exact-head CI run 39024186519 completed successfully.

 • Rustdoc generation passed. The linux-full log records cargo doc --workspace --no-deps with RUSTDOCFLAGS="--cfg docsrs -D warnings".
 • Doctests passed. The coverage-check job’s Run doctests step completed successfully.
 • Formatting, spelling, Markdown lint, and Nixie passed.
#398 acceptance criterion Assessment
At least 80% PR-scoped coverage Met: 264/264 = 100.00%.
Behavioral documentation Met for the requested additions and corrections.
Documentation validation passes Met by exact-head hosted evidence.

No remaining documentation defect was identified in this assessment. No coding-agent prompt is needed.

Treat 100.00% as the independent census result, not as output from CodeRabbit’s internal coverage checker. That checker’s exact-head metric was not available. If closure requires that specific checker’s report, retry the checker; no additional source change is identified here.

The parent commit object was unavailable locally. That limitation did not affect the complete base-to-head scan or the current-comment inspection.

Dispositions and evidence:

 • Testing (Overall): Fixed in the published candidate. installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs parameterizes the five requested query-error cases (binstall availability, post-binstall verification, post-Cargo verification, repository verification, and companion refresh) and tests Cargo fallback when binstall does not make the tool available. Exact-head local make test passed (1,852 passed, 5 skipped); make test-workflow-contracts passed (652 passed).
 • Unit Architecture: Fixed in the published candidate. configure_tracing returns Result<_, TracingInitializationError>, and startup reports initialization errors before command execution. Child-process tests exercise the production formatter and CLI flag behavior. Exact-head local test gate passed.
 • Developer Documentation: Fixed in the published candidate. Both developer-facing docs describe line_range_byte_offsets, invalid/base/reversed ranges, missing end-line fallback, unrepresentable offsets, and the 64-bit-only boundary tests. Formatting, spelling, and Markdown gates passed.
 • Observability: Open issue #422 tracks the persisted InstallMetrics compatibility decision and minimum failure counters. This row asks for broader metrics across dependency checks, PATH scan, installation, fallback, and failure outcomes. Please say whether deferral to Record installer failure categories, and decide the metrics file's compatibility rule #422 is an acceptable disposition for this PR or identify the specific additional observability requirement that remains in scope and provide a focused coding-agent prompt.

Documentation scope: User-facing API migration information is in docs/v0-3-0-migration-guide.md and docs/users-guide.md; changed internal numeric contracts are in docs/developers-guide.md and docs/whitaker-dylint-suite-design.md. The added timeout, spelling, and workflow-contract guidance is developer-facing. The new diagnostics concern internal installer operations and do not change user-facing behavior beyond the already documented install outcomes.

Do not treat warnings as optional. Please confirm the first three rows as resolved and provide an AI coding-agent prompt for any valid remaining work. Keep separately planned follow-up actions outside this PR's scope. This is a focused row reconciliation, not a request for a fresh whole-PR review.

The live walkthrough still identifies 9eb7a5c52bc2e61adc8187b23937e57e3a17e940 as its reviewed candidate. Use the replacement dispositions below for the requested candidate. This reply does not edit the auto-generated walkthrough or start a formal review.

Reconciled rows

Row Exact-candidate disposition Replacement explanation
Testing (Overall) Resolved — pass installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs::dependency_query_errors_are_propagated covers all five requested query failures. Each case checks the original I/O error variant and message, rejects installation-success output, and calls executor.assert_finished(). unverified_binstall_install_falls_back_to_cargo_install checks Cargo fallback after unsuccessful binstall verification. Exact-head hosted execution completed successfully.
Unit Architecture Resolved — pass installer/src/tracing_config.rs::configure_tracing returns Result<(), TracingInitializationError> instead of discarding try_init() failure. installer/src/main.rs::main reports that error and exits with status 1 before calling run. The isolated tracing_initialization_failure_is_reported test installs a subscriber first and verifies that a second registration returns the explicit error. Formatter and child-process tests cover verbosity, stderr routing, and ANSI suppression.
Developer Documentation Resolved — pass Both guides describe line_range_byte_offsets: rejection of starts before the base line, reversed ranges, missing start entries, fallback to snippet length when the end has no following entry, and rejection of unrepresentable offsets. Both guides identify the production boundary tests and their #[cfg(target_pointer_width = "64")] guard. These descriptions match the implementation.
Observability Accepted deferral — non-blocking Retain existing structured tracing. Defer persisted failure counters until the compatibility decision in #422. Do not require a metrics-schema change to merge this candidate.

Exact-head execution evidence

I checked CI run 39024186519, whose head matches the assessed SHA:

 • Workspace tests under coverage: 1,852 passed; 5 skipped.
 • Trailing dylint_testing suite: 11 passed.
 • Workflow contracts: 652 passed.
 • Coverage generation and LCOV verification: passed.
 • Doctests: passed.
 • linux-full, windows-compat, and coverage-check: all succeeded.

These are verified hosted results, not only author-reported results. I did not rerun repository tests in the inspection sandbox.

Observability disposition

Thanks for clarifying the metrics compatibility constraint.

Accept deferral to #422. The repository evidence supports that disposition:

 • AGENTS.md, Line 312, specifies the metrics crate where metrics are required. It does not require counters for every new installer decision.
 • docs/whitaker-dylint-suite-design.md, Line 1715 onwards, explicitly defines the existing metrics as successful-install aggregates.
 • docs/developers-guide.md, Line 3942 onwards, documents the compatibility concern and links #422.
 • installer/src/install_metrics.rs::load_metrics resets to defaults after a deserialization failure. New required fields without defaults or migration handling could therefore discard existing history.
 • installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs::report_path_scan_failures already emits bounded binary_name and failure_category fields without exposing paths.

Keep the follow-up scope precise. #422 requires a compatibility rule, previous-format tests, and minimum counters for source-fallback refusals and source-option conflicts. It does not currently require every dependency, PATH, repository, and binstall counter proposed by the stale warning. Treat those additional counters as optional follow-up scope.

No additional observability change is required before this PR merges on these findings. No coding-agent prompt is needed. This conclusion covers only the four requested rows; it is not a new full-review or approval decision.

Learning: In leynos/whitaker, installer InstallMetrics is persisted as unversioned JSON in <data_dir>/metrics/install_metrics.json. installer/src/install_metrics.rs::load_metrics resets metrics to defaults after deserialization failure. docs/developers-guide.md explicitly defers failure counters and the persistence compatibility decision to issue #422. Issue #422 requires minimum counters for source-fallback refusals and source-option conflicts, a documented compatibility rule, and previous-format tests; it does not require every dependency/PATH/binstall outcome counter. Do not treat those additional counters as a mandatory merge requirement without a concrete repository contract.

Exact-candidate dispositions

Finding Disposition Verified evidence
Testing (Overall) Resolved installer/src/deps/install_failure_tests.rs::dependency_query_errors_are_propagated covers all five requested query-error paths. Each case checks the original InstallerError::Io variant and message, rejects installation-success output, and checks executor consumption. unverified_binstall_install_falls_back_to_cargo_install covers successful Cargo fallback. installer/src/deps/tests.rs registers this test module.
Unit Architecture Resolved installer/src/tracing_config.rs::configure_tracing returns Result<(), TracingInitializationError> and preserves the registration error as its source. installer/src/main.rs::main reports the error and exits before run. tracing_initialization_failure_is_reported forces an existing subscriber in an isolated child process and checks that initialization fails explicitly.
Developer Documentation Resolved Both docs/developers-guide.md and docs/whitaker-dylint-suite-design.md describe line_range_byte_offsets, invalid and reversed ranges, missing start entries, end-line fallback, and unrepresentable offsets. Both identify the 64-bit-only production boundary tests.
Observability Accepted deferral to #422 The documented persistence compatibility decision belongs to the follow-up. No concrete repository contract requires the broader set of counters proposed by this warning in this PR.

Observability scope

Accept the deferral because the repository documents it—not because the finding is a warning.

I rechecked the retrieved metrics learning against the exact-head source, policy, and current #422:

 • AGENTS.md requires the metrics crate where metrics are required. It does not mandate counters for every installer decision.
 • The installer design defines the existing metrics as successful-install aggregates.
 • docs/developers-guide.md explicitly defers failure counters and persistence compatibility to #422.
 • installer/src/install_metrics.rs::load_metrics resets metrics after deserialization failure. Adding required fields without compatibility handling could discard existing history.
 • installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs::report_path_scan_failures already emits bounded binary_name and failure_category fields without exposing paths.

Keep #422 outside this PR’s scope. Its acceptance criteria require:

 1. Counters for source-fallback refusals and source-option conflicts.
 2. A documented persistence compatibility rule.
 3. Previous-format tests.
 4. Updated developer documentation.

Do not expand those criteria to every dependency-check, PATH, repository, or binstall outcome without a separate requirement.

Validation

Exact-head CI run 39024186519 reports success for:

 • linux-full
 • windows-compat
 • coverage-check

The reported local counts remain 1,852 passed, 5 skipped, plus 652 workflow-contract tests passed. I verified the hosted check conclusions but did not rerun tests or independently recount their logs in this inspection.

No coding-agent prompt is needed. No valid remaining work was identified within these four findings. This reconciliation does not start a formal review, approve the PR, or edit the walkthrough.

@coderabbitai Please confirm the disposition of this current pre-merge warning for ff994dfbecf3c729f41dc183dcef714edb0337d6, based on f7a5a93132e989490021cbacbb9cc865e40a467f.

Record dependency status outcomes, PATH failure categories, repository installation, cargo binstall, source fallback, verification failures, and final faile…

The exact-head formal review submitted APPROVED as review 5557581835, and this is its sole warning. In your earlier exact-head reconciliation reply 6232968355, you accepted deferral of this same broad metrics request to issue #422 as non-blocking. That issue records the unresolved compatibility rule for persisted InstallMetrics and the minimum counters to add after that decision. The current installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs::report_path_scan_failures also emits bounded binary_name and failure_category fields; adding persisted counters before the format decision could reset existing users' metrics.

Please confirm that this refreshed Observability warning is still an accepted, non-blocking deferral to #422, or identify the specific observability requirement that must be implemented before this PR merges and provide a focused coding-agent prompt. This is a row-specific disposition request, not a request for another full review.

@pandalump Keep the refreshed Observability warning as an accepted, non-blocking deferral to #422. No additional observability change is required before this candidate merges.

Reconciliation-ID: PR363-OBSERVABILITY-RECONCILE-ff994df-20261017T1135Z
Assessed base: f7a5a93132e989490021cbacbb9cc865e40a467f
Assessed head: ff994dfbecf3c729f41dc183dcef714edb0337d6

I rechecked the retrieved metrics learning against the exact-head source and current issue:

 • installer/src/install_flow/dependency_check.rs::report_path_scan_failures emits structured binary_name and failure_category fields without exposing paths.
 • installer/src/install_metrics.rs::load_metrics returns default metrics after deserialization failure. Adding required fields without compatibility handling could reset existing history.
 • docs/developers-guide.md, Line 3942 onwards, explicitly defers failure counters and the persistence compatibility decision to #422.
 • AGENTS.md specifies metric emission where metrics are required. It does not establish a requirement for every counter requested by this warning.
 • #422 remains open. Its minimum scope covers source-fallback refusals, source-option conflicts, a documented compatibility rule, previous-format tests, and updated documentation. It does not require every dependency, PATH, repository, binstall, or verification outcome counter.

Accept the deferral because the repository documents the scope and compatibility decision—not because the finding is a warning. Withdraw the refreshed row’s mandatory pre-merge metrics demand. Keep #422 open for the separately planned work.

I also verified that review 5557581835 is APPROVED and references this exact head. That approval is separate from the reasoning above.

No coding-agent prompt is needed. This reply does not start another review or modify the walkthrough, issues, or PR state.
