Summary

This branch adopts directory-based module structure across the installer: two
self-named module files move to mod.rs form, and oversized in-src test modules
are extracted into sibling files wired with the repository's
#[cfg(test)] #[path = "..."] mod ...; convention. Every move is
content-preserving — extracted test bodies are this tree's code verbatim, so the
review is purely structural. Each module this branch touches is now inside the
400-line budget, without mixing lint fixes into the structural diff.

Third PR in the lint-hardening stack, based on harden-lint-spelling.

Review walkthrough

  • The two renames are content-preserving.
    installer/src/install_flow/mod.rs
is install_flow.rs with exactly one line deleted — the #[path] anchor
described under "One repair this rebase required" below.
    installer/src/toolchain/mod.rs
is byte-identical to its pre-move path; both resolve to blob
    9615cd5bf282158aa44e0243fae77da522b8c3c4.
  • installer/src/list.rs
shows the extraction pattern: the inline mod tests becomes
    #[cfg(test)] #[path = "list_tests.rs"] mod tests;, and
    installer/src/list_tests.rs
opens with its //! purpose line.
  • The same shape applies to deps/tests.rs (split into policy_tests.rs and
    tests_repository.rs) and
    dependency_binaries/install/downloader.rs (into downloader_tests.rs).

This PR moves test modules only. installer/src/workspace_tests.rs,
installer/src/dependency_binaries/install/downloader_boundary_tests.rs (the
#[cfg(unix)] non-UTF-8 boundary tests), and the dependency-binary fakes already
live in sibling files at the base and are not touched here.

One repair this rebase required

#[path] resolves relative to the directory containing the declaring file, so
a file module and a directory module resolve the same attribute to different
paths. The base carried #[path = "install_flow/dependency_check_tests.rs"] in
installer/src/install_flow.rs; after the rename to install_flow/mod.rs that
anchor doubled its leading segment and resolved to
install_flow/install_flow/dependency_check_tests.rs, which does not exist.

7ec1640 deletes the attribute rather than retargeting it. Inside a directory
module a bare mod dependency_check_tests; resolves to the identical file, so
the anchor carried no information; the sibling mod tests; above it is already
bare, and ADR 006 now confines the attribute to the file-module case.

Worth recording where this was caught: make check-fmt found it, because rustfmt
resolves every mod declaration, whereas a build without --all-targets never
reaches a #[cfg(test)] module. make typecheck covers it too
(--workspace --all-targets --all-features).

Validation

Bound to head 7ec16406, base 01f4b869.

  • Mergeability is MERGEABLE / mergeStateStatus: CLEAN on GitHub. Local
    git merge-tree --write-tree HEAD 01f4b86 reproduces GitHub's
    refs/pull/364/merge tree exactly (e9f53e581cd8af56f94f75a8c7cbf10baabd8697),
with empty stderr — a clean merge with no conflict.
  • The merge is a plain union: the base's installer/src/error.rs refactor is
preserved verbatim in the merged tree, and all 12 branch-owned files are
    byte-identical to this head.
  • Hosted CI run 38900575768
    is success on 7ec16406 (17m). coverage-check, linux-full,
windows-compat, CodeScene Code Health Review, Gecko Security Review, and
the CodeRabbit status are all green on this head. CodeScene approved

Local commit gates for 7ec16406

Run sequentially in one worktree, each gate started once, Cargo locks and
compiler admission left to queue rather than worked around:

Gate Result Log
make check-fmt pass /tmp/g3-check-fmt-efccff72.out
make lint pass /tmp/g3-lint-efccff72.out
make typecheck pass /tmp/g3-typecheck-efccff72.out
make markdownlint pass /tmp/g3-markdownlint-efccff72.out
make nixie pass /tmp/g3-nixie-efccff72.out
make test not green /tmp/g3-test-efccff72-2.out

make markdownlint depends on make spelling, so the typos gate ran and
passed in the same invocation: 85 files linted, 0 errors.

Why make test is not green here

make test is recorded as not green rather than omitted, and the reason is
host contention, not a defect in this branch. Four independent checks say so:

  1. The failing tests are untouched by this branch. Both live in files this
PR does not modify, and their blobs are identical to the base.
  2. The branch diff does not go near them. No path under
    whitaker_clones_core or no_std_fs_operations is changed.
  3. Same-tree A/B. On the identical tree c3b43dd3,
crate_builds_without_dylint_driver_feature passed at 191.906s in one run
and timed out at 300.003s in another. Identical commits, opposite
outcomes, so the variable is the host.
  4. The generous allowance expired too. build_script_accepts_an_exact_workspace_parser_pin
exhausted the 30-minute binary(build_script_integration) override — not the
300s base — while build-limits-status showed the compile pool saturated and
dozens of cargo/rustc processes from other repositories queued.

The run's final line is 1807/1842 tests run: 1805 passed, 2 timed out, 5 skipped, then 35/1842 tests were not run due to test failure. There were
zero assertion-level failures and zero panics.
Both victims are tests that
spawn a nested cargo build, which is precisely the class whose wall time
tracks compiler admission rather than test logic.

Quantified against the hosted runner, which uses the same 300s base and the
same configuration: the same test blob passes in 0.815s on a hosted runner,
and the whole CI suite completes in ~17 minutes there against this host's
85-minute budget. CI is not more generous; it is uncontended.

This is deliberately not worked around. Raising the timeout, editing
.config/nextest.toml, or touching those test files would be metric gaming, and
the timeout policy belongs to the later lint-configuration layer rather than to
this structural PR. .config/nextest.toml and both test files are byte-identical
to the base; the gap is real and pre-existing, and the hosted CI run above is the
arbiter for this candidate.

Base advance since publication

The base branch advanced by one commit after this branch was published:
01f4b86 "Split source-policy cloning from Clone::clone", which touches
installer/src/error.rs alone (+20 −8).

It does not interact with this branch, and the checks above establish that
directly. It touches one file this PR never changes; merge-tree reproduces
GitHub's merge ref tree exactly with no conflict; and the resulting merge is a
clean union in which the base's refactor survives verbatim. No restack was
required, and no branch commit was replayed.

Documentation

docs/developers-guide.md gains the module-layout conventions, the
mod.rs rule, the sibling-test-module convention, and test-module placement
rules. docs/adr-006-directory-based-module-layout.md records the structural
decision, with three options considered and the two rejected ones explained.

The guide and the ADR state plainly that the 400-line budget is not currently
enforced automatically against this repository's own source — it is a
review-held convention. make lint is cargo doc plus cargo clippy; there is
no dylint run target; the root dylint.toml configures [no_std_fs_operations]
alone; and the [workspace.lints.rust] and [workspace.lints.rustdoc] tables in
Cargo.toml do not load module_max_lines. The stack ends with a Whitaker
self-linting layer that has not landed, and these documents no longer describe
that layer's intended end state as the current one.

docs/developers-guide.md is a test input:
installer/tests/doc_extraction/extraction.rs extracts its fenced toml blocks
and installer/tests/behaviour_docs.rs asserts on them. That target passes in
the run above.

Notes

  • The donor history's deps/install.rs → install_repository.rs split is
deliberately not here — it is lint-fix-driven (complexity extraction) and lands
with the installer lint fixes PR.
  • The stack: test-quality sweep → spelling → module structure → support-crate
lint fixes → installer lint fixes → rustfmt profile → lint configuration →
    Whitaker self-linting gate.
  • The child PR Fix workspace-lint violations across support crates #365 (harden-lint-support-crates, currently CONFLICTING and
draft) needs its own restack. Its base was rewritten by the force-push that
published this head, which is expected for a stacked child; the conflict is not
new to this branch. It is a separate layer with its own restack and its own
    review.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 80.77% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 52 functions across 9 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Full details: Testing (Overall)

Explanation

PASS — the pull request changes module layout, not product behaviour. The production diff only extracts existing test modules, renames install_flow.rs and toolchain.rs to mod.rs, and removes the obsolete #[path] anchor. The extracted tests remain substantive: downloader_tests.rs:12-105 checks size rejection, error mapping, destination placement, and checksum verification; policy_tests.rs:38-140 checks source-fallback policy and executor call order; list_tests.rs:96-248 checks output, discovery, toolchain detection, and target selection. The base and head test-name inventories preserve the existing test coverage, so no new behavioural path lacks a test.

Full details: User-Facing Documentation

Explanation

Pass the check. The pull request changes internal Rust module layout and test placement only. The rename-aware diff shows content-preserving module moves and extracted test files; no user-facing functionality or behaviour changes. The pull request adds the developer guide and ADR documentation for the internal layout, while docs/users-guide.md remains correctly unchanged.

Full details: Developer Documentation

Explanation

PASS: The PR documents the changed module architecture and test-placement convention in docs/developers-guide.md:1407-1535. It documents the 400-line budget, mod.rs directory modules, #[path] test extraction, nested test modules, and the current enforcement limits. The new ADR records the decision, alternatives, rationale, and risks in docs/adr-006-directory-based-module-layout.md:1-156, and docs/contents.md:99-100 indexes it. The Rust diff is structural: it moves module roots and extracts existing tests, with no new public API, tooling requirement, or build requirement. No new execplan or roadmap item is introduced; the existing completed module_max_lines roadmap item remains checked off.

Full details: Module-Level Documentation

Explanation

All modules introduced or relocated by this PR have module-level //! documentation. The extracted modules document their purpose and function in downloader_tests.rs:1, list_tests.rs:1, policy_tests.rs:1-6, and tests_repository.rs:1-5. The retained module roots document their purpose in downloader.rs:1, list.rs:1-4, deps/tests.rs:1, install_flow/mod.rs:1-4, and toolchain/mod.rs:1-4. The install-flow documentation also explains its relationship to CLI orchestration. No module-level documentation failure is introduced.

Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)

Explanation

The pull request preserves the existing tests while changing module layout. The extracted unit tests cover success paths, edge cases, errors, and invariants: downloader limits and destination placement (downloader_tests.rs:11-109), list output and path-selection errors (list_tests.rs:96-248), and dependency-install fallback and refusal paths (policy_tests.rs:37-141, tests_repository.rs:42-169). Existing downloader behavioural boundary tests still exercise the local HTTP boundary, checksum failures, oversized sidecars, and partial-file cleanup (downloader_boundary_tests.rs:89-218). The production changes are file moves and module declarations, so they do not introduce a new external workflow that requires an additional end-to-end test.

Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)

Explanation

Keep the current example-based tests. The diff is a module-layout refactor: install_flow.rs and toolchain.rs are renames, and production files only gain test-module declarations (downloader.rs:289-291, list.rs:177-179, deps/tests.rs:294-298). The added tests cover concrete downloader, list, and dependency-install cases. The PR introduces no invariant over a broad input or state range, and it introduces no lemma or proof assumption. A property test or exhaustive proof is therefore not required by this check.

Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)

Explanation

The pull request introduces no new compile-time API or diagnostic behaviour. It relocates inline tests and changes module-file resolution only: downloader.rs and list.rs declare sibling test files, deps/tests.rs declares two sibling test modules, and install_flow/mod.rs uses the default directory-module declaration. The moved tests retain focused assertions for list output, installer messages, and error behaviour. No new text or structured output is introduced, so snapshot tests are not required. The repository already has a trybuild harness for its existing compile-fail contract in installer/tests/ui.rs.

Full details: Unit Architecture

Explanation

Pass this check. The reviewed range only relocates existing tests, renames two module files, updates module declarations, and adds documentation. Product code remains unchanged apart from removing the obsolete #[path] anchor in installer/src/install_flow/mod.rs. The new declarations remain test-only in downloader.rs:289-291, list.rs:177-179, and install_flow/mod.rs:364-368; extracted tests retain explicit seams such as Write and mocked executors. No query, command, fallible-operation, dependency-injection, or side-effect boundary becomes less visible.

Full details: Domain Architecture

Explanation

Pass. Keep the domain boundary unchanged. The diff only extracts test modules, adds module declarations, renames install_flow.rs and toolchain.rs to mod.rs, and updates documentation. The production implementations remain unchanged; the new declarations only load tests, for example downloader.rs:289-291, list.rs:177-179, and deps/tests.rs:294-298. No change introduces HTTP, SQL, filesystem, transport, persistence, or vendor concerns into domain logic.

Full details: Observability

Explanation

PASS — this pull request changes module layout, test placement, and documentation only. The diff shows test bodies moved behind #[cfg(test)] and #[path] declarations, plus two file-to-mod.rs renames. The install_flow rename removes one stale test-module path attribute; production code is otherwise content-preserved. No new or altered production operational behaviour, logging, metrics, tracing, or alerts requires observability changes.

Restacked onto the advanced parent and republished.

Why the PR read CONFLICTING

The parent harden-lint-spelling was rebased and advanced to
82e0ff1. That left this branch's merge base behind it, so GitHub
reported mergeable: CONFLICTING / mergeStateStatus: DIRTY — a stale
base, not a disagreement about content.

  • Previous head: b5e49282bea1
  • New head: e4959b248364
  • Rebased onto: 82e0ff10103c (harden-lint-spelling tip, confirmed
    against the remote)

Boundary and scope

The exclusive replay boundary was re-established at 5e1f398 by
patch-id forensics before replaying, so the range contains only this
branch's own commits — no inherited parent work was replayed as fresh
child work.

One part of the earlier change turned out to be superseded: the parent
independently adopted the same directory-module convention, so
install_flow is no longer novel here and was not replayed.

Two conflicts were resolved preserving both intents:

  • installer/src/workspace_tests.rs — took the parent's version, a
    strict superset.
  • installer/src/deps/tests.rs — kept the shared prologue and tests,
then wired in the extracted modules below the parent module so
private helpers stay reachable through super::*.

A real budget regression I had introduced (a 467-line tests.rs,
against the module_max_lines default of 400) was fixed with a
concern-based split. All modules are now well under the limit:
tests.rs 295, tests_repository.rs 169, policy_tests.rs 141.

Local gates on e4959b2

Gate Result
make check-fmt pass, with the CI-pinned mdtablefix 0.6.0 — "82 files left unchanged"
make lint pass — rustdoc clean, and clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings clean
make typecheck pass
make test 1770 passed, 5 skipped, 1 flaky (passed on retry)

Three test timeouts in whitaker_clones_core::build_script_integration
were investigated rather than assumed benign, and shown to be host
contention: the same four tests pass unaided in 83–116 s given an
adequate budget. That test spawns a nested cargo build, so it costs
what a build costs, but it currently has no [[profile.ci.overrides]]
entry in .config/nextest.toml despite the comment there citing exactly
that pattern for build-cost tests. I have not changed that file,
since other work is in flight against it — flagging it as an
observation.

make lint initially failed with os error 11 (EAGAIN) at compiler
spawn. That was diagnosed to the shared service cgroup's pid ceiling
(pids.max 8192, ~92% consumed by concurrent agents on this host), not
to this change or to build admission — the compiler process was never
executed, so the token pool never had a chance to queue it. Bounding
cargo's jobs to 4, which matches the admission pool's capacity, let the
full unrestricted run complete cleanly.

Hosted CI

refs/pull/364/merge is still frozen at 7f6dcab (built 2026-08-29
from the pre-rebase head), so the push did not produce a
pull_request run — the merge ref was never recomputed. CI was
therefore started explicitly on the new head:

https://github.com/leynos/whitaker/actions/runs/38280686373

That run is on e4959b248364. Reporting this plainly rather than
implying the push triggered it.

Reviews

CodeScene has already re-assessed the new head and passed — a fresh
review bound to e4959b248364, "6 Quality Gates Passed", not a carry
over. Gecko Security also re-ran clean on the new head. The earlier
CodeRabbit and Sourcery reviews are bound to b5e49282bea1 and are
superseded.

@coderabbitai you were right, and I have fixed it. Thank you for the
correction. This is the first time on this change that you have caught me
asserting something false rather than merely omitting something, and it is a
better catch than a missing section: a missing record is visible, but a
confident wrong sentence reads as verified.

Your finding is correct. Cargo.toml:185 declares [workspace.lints.rust]
and Cargo.toml:191 declares [workspace.lints.rustdoc]. The guide's clause
"there is no [workspace.lints] table in Cargo.toml" was false. Two manifests
inherit those tables through [lints] workspace = true:
installer/Cargo.toml and crates/whitaker_clones_core/Cargo.toml.

How I produced the error. I grepped for the literal string
`[workspace.lints]` including the closing bracket. That pattern matches
an exactly-empty table name and therefore cannot match a subtable like
[workspace.lints.rust]. The search was structurally incapable of finding the
thing I then asserted did not exist, so "no match" felt like evidence when it
was not. That is the same failure mode as another mistake in this session, where
I used rg -rn intending "recursive" and got --replace, rewriting every match
to the letter n. Both produced a confident false statement from a query that
could not have returned the truth.

The fix (6976f83) replaces that clause with:

The [workspace.lints.rust] and [workspace.lints.rustdoc] tables in
Cargo.toml do not change this: they configure rustc and rustdoc lints, and
neither names module_max_lines.

I verified the replacement rather than restating it: grep -rn 'module_max_lines' --include=Cargo.toml finds it only as a dependency in suite/Cargo.toml and as
the crate name and UI-fixture directory. Neither workspace table names it, so
the conclusion you accepted — that the budget is not automatically enforced —
stands on a reason that is now true.

A second over-claim in the same sentence, which you did not raise. My text
said "CI's one use of the dylint host tools is the make publish-check step".
That conflated restoring the tools with invoking them:
.github/workflows/ci.yml:302-306 does restore ~/.cache/whitaker-dylint-tools
in linux-full. The restore serves publish-check — DYLINT_TOOLS_DIR is
consumed only at Makefile:473-476, inside the publish-check target that
starts at line 460 — but my sentence said something narrower and wrong. It now
reads that the tools "are restored for the make publish-check step alone", and
that the step's single dylint invocation is dylint list --no-metadata --no-build, which enumerates built libraries and lints nothing. I swept for
other copies of the claim before fixing: no other document asserts it, and
ADR 006's Known Risks section does not.

A housekeeping correction on my side. One of my earlier comments on this PR
(id 6203586514, 22:28Z) was posted as a 29-byte body containing only the text
@/tmp/cr-reply-doc-finding.md. I had intended that as a file reference, but
that convention does not exist for gh pr comment --body, so the comment
delivered nothing to you and left an orphaned path in the thread. The draft
behind it argued the very claim you have now corrected — it described the budget
as "enforced by the repository's own module_max_lines dylint lint" — so it
would have been wrong had it posted. Disregard it; this comment supersedes it,
and I am posting bodies from files now.

Candidate. This fix is 6976f83, on top of 0d9d377. The change is
one paragraph of docs/developers-guide.md. It is gated with make check-fmt,
make markdownlint, make nixie, make lint and make typecheck
sequentially, and hosted CI is re-running on the new head. This is a
finding-disposition reply, not a review request.

One note on the fix itself, since check-fmt caught me: my first version of the
replacement paragraph failed the formatter. mdtablefix wanted a pure reflow —
it pulled `make publish-check` onto the preceding line to fill to 80
columns — so the paragraph is hand-wrapped prose that the tool re-flowed, not
text I wrapped by eye.

@pandalump Mark the Developer Documentation row as addressed at 6976f83. The remaining factual correction is present in docs/developers-guide.md.

Source inspection confirms:

  • The paragraph now identifies [workspace.lints.rust] and [workspace.lints.rustdoc] correctly. Neither table names module_max_lines.
  • The paragraph distinguishes restoring the Dylint host tools from invoking them. The publish-check target runs dylint list --no-metadata --no-build to enumerate libraries, not lint repository source.
  • The guide still states that the 400-line budget is a review-held convention, not an automatic gate.

Together with the five documentation topics confirmed earlier, this closes the finding. No further documentation change is required for this row.

Thanks for the clarification. I inspected source only; I did not run the gates or verify hosted CI. This reconciliation does not trigger a new review.

Learning: In leynos/whitaker, .github/workflows/ci.yml restores the cached Dylint host tools for make publish-check. The Makefile's publish-check target provisions those tools and invokes cargo dylint list --no-metadata --no-build to enumerate built lint libraries for packaging verification. Distinguish restoring the tools from invoking them; this packaging check does not enforce module_max_lines against repository source.

Move the remaining self-named module files to mod.rs form
(install_flow, toolchain) and extract oversized in-src test modules
into sibling files (list, workspace, downloader, the non-UTF-8
boundary tests, the dependency-binary fakes, and the deps repository
tests), each wired with the repo's `#[cfg(test)] #[path]` convention
and opening with an explanatory `//!` line.

The moves are content-preserving: extracted test bodies are this
tree's code verbatim; only the module structure changes. This keeps
every module inside the 400-line budget the lint configuration later
in this stack will enforce, without entangling the structural review
with lint fixes.
The directory-module rebase rebuilt `downloader_tests.rs` by dedenting
the parent's inline `mod tests` body. rustfmt had laid that body out at
the deeper inline indentation, so a call whose argument list crossed the
width limit kept its break at the old indent column. After dedenting,
the reflow no longer matched rustfmt's choice and `make check-fmt`
reported a diff at the `destination_dir` binding.

Rejoin that line so the extraction is formatting-neutral.

The edit moves only whitespace: the token stream is identical, with the
same 527 tokens in the same order, and the call is applied to the same
arguments and bound to the same name.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
The restack onto the advanced parent left `installer/src/deps/tests.rs` at
467 lines. The parent had grown the file to 561 while my extraction split it
at the point that was correct for the older content, and the two changes
overlapped: the repository-install tests ended up declared in both files.

Split the file along its two independent concerns instead. `policy_tests.rs`
owns the source-fallback refusal tests and the two private helpers only they
use; `tests_repository.rs` owns the repository-installer tests. `tests.rs`
keeps the shared prologue and declares both children, so the private helpers
stay reachable through `super::*`.

Every module is now inside the repository's 400-line limit: tests.rs is 294
lines, policy_tests.rs 140, tests_repository.rs 169.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit's pre-merge "Developer Documentation" check failed on this
branch: the change renames two installer modules to `mod.rs` form and
extracts inline test modules into sibling files, and none of those
conventions was written down.

Add a `## Module layout and test placement` section to the developers'
guide covering the 400-line budget and its rationale, the directory-module
`mod.rs` convention, the three shapes of extracted test module, and where
the budget is enforced. Every claim is taken from the tree rather than
asserted: 46 tracked `mod.rs` files outside `vendor/` and 65 files
carrying a `#[path = "` anchor show the convention is repository-wide, and
the threshold is the `module_max_lines` dylint lint's 400-line default,
not a Clippy built-in.

Record the one variation as well. `installer/src/deps/tests.rs` is itself
declared `#[cfg(test)] mod tests;`, so its children omit the attribute and
take their names from the `#[path]` files instead.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add ADR 006, which records the directory-based module layout the
previous commit only described: mod.rs-rooted directory modules, and
extraction of an oversized inline test module into a sibling file wired
with `#[cfg(test)] #[path = "..."] mod ...;`. Two alternatives are
recorded as rejected, including the self-named `name.rs` next to
`name/` form, which no path in this repository uses.

CodeRabbit's Developer Documentation pre-merge row required the
structural decision to be recorded in a design document or an ADR. The
requirement was previously unreadable because the summary table
truncates the cell; the same row appears in full in the comment's
per-check details block. ADRs 001-005 were registered in
docs/contents.md, so 006 is added there too.

Correct an unsupported claim in docs/developers-guide.md. The section
added in the previous commit said the 400-line budget "is enforced
mechanically by module_max_lines" and that the lint is "wired in
through the workspace's lint configuration". Neither holds. `make lint`
is a cargo doc pass plus cargo clippy, with no dylint step; the only
dylint sub-command in the repository is a `dylint list` in
publish-check that enumerates built libraries and lints nothing; the
root dylint.toml configures no_std_fs_operations alone; and Cargo.toml
has no [workspace.lints] table. The budget is held by review until the
self-linting gate lands.

The section is retitled "Where the budget is checked" and links ADR 006.
Removing the stale [module_max_lines] TOML block from a file that
doc_extraction reads is safe: find_block_containing returns the first
match, which comes from docs/users-guide.md.

Docs-only change; gated with check-fmt, markdownlint, nixie, lint,
typecheck, and the behaviour_docs integration test, which owns the
doc_extraction module tests that read these files.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fix an error introduced in 0d9d377. The developers' guide said
"there is no [workspace.lints] table in Cargo.toml". That is false:
Cargo.toml:185 declares [workspace.lints.rust] and Cargo.toml:191
declares [workspace.lints.rustdoc], and two manifests inherit them
through `[lints] workspace = true`.

The error came from grepping for the literal string
`[workspace.lints]` including the closing bracket, which matches only
an exactly-empty table name and so cannot match a subtable. The
conclusion was right for the wrong reason: neither table names
module_max_lines, so the budget is still not enforced.

The paragraph now states the tables exist, that they configure rustc
and rustdoc lints, and that neither names module_max_lines. It also
drops a second over-claim in the same sentence: ci.yml:302 does restore
the dylint host tools, so saying CI's "one use" of them is the
publish-check step conflated restoring the tools with invoking them.
They are restored for that step, whose single dylint invocation is the
`dylint list --no-metadata --no-build` that enumerates built libraries
and lints nothing.

Docs-only change; gated with check-fmt, markdownlint, nixie, lint and
typecheck, and verified against the tree rather than restated.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fix errors I introduced in 2991148 and 0d9d377. Both were asserted
without being checked, and both were repeated in the developers'
guide and ADR 006, so the same mistake shipped twice.

1. "attribute-free form, drawing their names from the #[path] files"
described deps/tests.rs's children as attribute-free while naming
#[path] as the source of their names. That is self-contradictory:
#[path] is the attribute that names them. At
installer/src/deps/tests.rs:291-295 the children do carry #[path]; the
attribute they lack is #[cfg(test)], because deps/mod.rs:548 already
gates the whole file. The #[path] is load-bearing, since no
deps/tests/ directory exists for a bare `mod` to resolve into.

2. "The repository does not use this form anywhere" was false. Two
production modules reach a child through a same-named directory:
installer/src/cli.rs:182 resolves `mod source_policy;` to
cli/source_policy.rs, and
crates/conditional_max_n_branches/src/driver.rs:24 resolves
`mod numeric;` to driver/numeric.rs. Resolution is unambiguous --
neither installer/src/source_policy.rs nor
crates/conditional_max_n_branches/src/numeric.rs exists. Both were
already present at the base commit, so this PR did not introduce them.

The supporting figures verified exactly and the Option B rejection
still stands; only the stated reason was wrong. The documents now name
the two outliers explicitly as things not to copy, rather than denying
them.

Docs-only change; gated with check-fmt, markdownlint, nixie, lint,
typecheck and the behaviour_docs target, whose DOC_PATHS pins
docs/developers-guide.md as a test input.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com>
`#[path]` resolves relative to the directory containing the declaring
file, so a file module and a directory module resolve the same attribute
to different paths. After rebasing onto f3a457b, the base's anchor
survived the rename of `installer/src/install_flow.rs` to
`installer/src/install_flow/mod.rs`, doubling its leading segment to
`install_flow/install_flow/...`:

    failed to resolve mod `dependency_check_tests`:
    .../install_flow/install_flow/dependency_check_tests.rs does not exist

`check-fmt` caught this because rustfmt resolves every `mod`
declaration, whereas a build without `--all-targets` does not reach it.

Delete the attribute rather than retarget it. Inside a directory module
a bare `mod dependency_check_tests;` resolves to the identical file, so
the anchor carried no information; the sibling `mod tests;` above it is
already bare, and the convention recorded in ADR 006 confines the
attribute to the file-module case. Deleting it also removes a manual
anchor that ADR 006 already names as a staleness risk, and returns the
tree-wide anchor count to the 65 both the ADR and the developers' guide
already state.

Correct two claims this rebase invalidated: the guide no longer asserts
that `install_flow/mod.rs` ends with `mod tests;`, and ADR 006 now
records the module-form hazard alongside its other `#[path]` risks.

A sweep of all 81 `#[path]` anchors across 542 tracked `.rs` files finds
every one resolving to an existing file, so the hazard was confined to
this case.

This comment was marked as outdated.

The module layout documents claimed that `#[path]` holds a module's path
still, and that relying on the default location would break `super::`
inside a renamed test module. Compile probes show both claims are wrong.

`mod tests;` fixes the module name, and with it the path
`crate::list::tests`; `#[path]` selects the file that backs it. A bare
`mod tests;` already yields that name and path, so the attribute creates
neither. What the attribute supplies is the placement: left alone, a bare
`mod tests;` in `list.rs` resolves to `list/tests.rs`, and naming the
declaration after the file resolves to `list/list_tests.rs`. Neither
reaches a sibling, so only the attribute puts the file beside `list.rs`
while keeping the module named `tests`.

Renaming the module would not break `super::` on its own, because the
module stays a child of `list`. Only absolute paths such as
`crate::list::tests::…` and `cargo test` filters naming `tests` break.

Correct all four mirrors of the claim: the decision outcome and the
architectural rationale in ADR 006, and the sibling-test-modules lead-in
and preferred-form paragraph in the developers' guide. The decision
itself is unchanged; only its stated justification is.

Learning: In Rust module-layout reviews for leynos/whitaker, distinguish the logical module name from the source-file location. In installer/src/list.rs, `mod tests;` establishes the child module `crate::list::tests`; `#[path = "list_tests.rs"]` selects the sibling source file. Without the attribute, `mod tests;` searches under `list/`, and changing the declaration to `mod list_tests;` still searches under `list/`. Renaming a child module while retaining its parent does not itself break `super::`; paths and test filters that name the old child module can break.
