Clear the compression and frontend audit advisories - #574
Clears the advisories that turn build's Audit step red on main, so the Whitaker repin (#573) can go green.
Rust: actix-http moves to the patched Zstandard chain (zstd 0.14.3, zstd-safe 8.2.0, zstd-sys 2.1.2). base-d pinned zstd 0.13, so the seed-name module now uses the EFF word-list provider (diceware_wordlists) with num-bigint radix conversion, and the encoder moves out of the CLI adapter into a domain module. Deterministic seed names are unchanged (the original and replacement encoders were compared; the EFF word lists were compared in full). The unused shellexpand shim is removed.
Frontend: the qs pin goes to 6.16.1 (GHSA-6pq8-jhm2-2vcw), and glob goes to 14.0.2 (GHSA-3g3m-2fjr-6pw4), which takes the patched minimatch 11.0.1. Both were published after the first audit run on this branch.
minimatchGHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249: typedoc 0.28.20 and markdownlint-cli 0.48.0 (both latest) declare minimatch 10, and typedoc fails on 11 (mini.matchOne is not a function, seen in this PR's first CI run), so they take a 14-day exception, MINIMATCH_GLOBPARTS_DOS_2026_10, tracked in Except minimatch GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249 until typedoc and markdownlint-cli accept minimatch 11 #575, with a removal-invariant test (mutation-proved: raising the patched floor, or dropping a permitted parent, each fails a test).
This re-applies the content of the open robot-house PR #567 (untouched, hands-off) on current main, without that PR's own Whitaker installer change.
It also carries the pin-only commit of #573 (install-whitaker to 5a99aed78ce68dcebd3052b75c31e6f173162b1e, installer 0.2.11), unchanged. The two blocked each other: #573's build was red only at Audit, while this branch's build is red at Whitaker lint (Dylint cloning Clippy's deleted master) without the repin. With both, the build job passes its Audit and Whitaker lint steps, and its lint log is the evidence of a real Whitaker run. The workflow contract allows the estate one shared-actions commit, so every other reference (ci.yml, coverage-main.yml, dependabot-automerge.yml, mutation-testing.yml, audit.yml), the coverage tool cache key and the two tests that name the pin move from 6cec89ba to the same approved commit (a descendant: 6cec89ba is an ancestor of 5a99aed7). #573 is closed as superseded once this merges.
Gates: make audit, make check-fmt, make lint and make test (1,852 Rust tests plus the compile-fail tests, workflow contracts and scripts) passed through gate-slot.sh on the Rust content; after the glob/minimatch changes I re-ran make audit-node, make docs-check, make test-workflow-contracts, make markdownlint, make nixie, make check-fmt-python, make lint-python, make typecheck-python and the markdown format check (all exit 0, no Rust change since).
Open PRs touching the same files: #567 (robot-house), #565 (user/robot-house, depends on #567).
Summary by Sourcery
Clear the blocking dependency advisories while preserving seed-name compatibility and bringing all CI workflow tooling onto the approved revisions.
Bug Fixes:
Update Rust and frontend dependencies to clear patched compression and audit advisories.
Replace the retired seed-name dependency while preserving all existing deterministic seed names.
Restore green CI audit and Whitaker lint gates through the approved shared-actions and installer pins.
Enhancements:
Add compatibility-focused seed-name validation and documentation for the EFF word-list encoding.
Add removal-invariant coverage for temporary minimatch and deepmerge audit exceptions.
CI:
Repin shared workflow actions and Whitaker to the approved revisions across CI, coverage, audit, Dependabot, and mutation-testing workflows.
Documentation:
Update backend design and developer documentation to describe the dependency-safe seed-name encoding and advisory exceptions.
Tests:
Add property-based tests confirming seed-name compatibility across arbitrary u64 values.
Add workflow contract tests that ensure audit exceptions are removed when their justifications no longer hold.
Chores:
Remove the unused shellexpand compatibility shim and update dependency lockfiles.
Move actix-http to the patched Zstandard chain (zstd 0.14.3, zstd-safe
8.2.0, zstd-sys 2.1.2) by replacing base-d, which pins the vulnerable
zstd 0.13, with the EFF word-list provider and num-bigint radix
conversion in the seed-name module. Bump the qs pin to 6.16.1, and
except deepmerge GHSA-gcqx-w48m-w2h4 (no patched release) for 14 days
with a removal test.
Re-applies the content of the open robot-house PR 567 without its
Whitaker pin change, which PR 573 owns.
Clears the Rust compression and frontend audit advisories by removing the shellexpand/base-d dependency paths, pinning qs to 6.16.1, and adding a narrowly scoped deepmerge exception with invariant tests; the Rust seed-name encoder is moved into a tested domain module and reproduces all existing names using the pinned EFF word list.

Summary
Replace base-d with diceware_wordlists and num-bigint. Move seed-name encoding into the example-data domain module and add property tests to protect the existing name format.
Remove the unused local shellexpand shim and its Cargo patch.
Update the qs pin to 6.16.1. Add a time-limited deepmerge audit exception, tracked by issue #570, with removal-invariant tests.
Update the seed-name design documentation. It defines the encoding and compatibility contract.
Validation
The author reports that make audit, make check-fmt, make lint and make test exited successfully. The reported test run included 1,852 Rust tests, compile-fail tests, workflow contracts and scripts. These results have not been independently verified here.
Walkthrough
The PR replaces the seed-name dependency and implementation while preserving the documented encoding. It adds seed-name compatibility tests, removes the local shellexpand override, updates the qs resolution, records a temporary deepmerge audit exception, and adjusts supporting documentation and configuration.

Seed-name Encoding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Encoding contract and implementation crates/example-data/Cargo.toml, crates/example-data/src/lib.rs, crates/example-data/src/seed_name.rs, docs/backend-sample-data-design.md, docs/wildside-backend-architecture.md
The crate replaces base-d with diceware_wordlists and num-bigint. It exposes seed_name_from_value and SeedNameError. The encoding interprets decimal UTF-8 seed bytes as a big-endian integer, converts to base 7,776, and joins EFF long words with hyphens.
CLI wordlist and name generation crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/*
The CLI loads the EFF long word list and uses the crate-level encoder. It propagates conversion errors and checks duplicate names as complete strings.
Tests compare generated names with an independent reference encoder and check output properties. Documentation describes the preserved encoding and its dependencies.
shellexpand Override Removal

Full details: User-Facing Documentation
Explanation
No new or changed end-user behaviour requires docs/users-guide.md. The seed registry CLI keeps the existing deterministic names, and the pull request adds regression checks for seeds 0, 1, 2026 and u64::MAX in crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/tests.rs. The seed-name change is an internal dependency and implementation change, documented in docs/backend-sample-data-design.md, docs/developers-guide.md and docs/wildside-backend-architecture.md. The qs update, deepmerge exception and shellexpand removal are dependency or build-policy changes. docs/users-guide.md documents server API consumers and local preview behaviour, which this pull request does not change.
Full details: Developer Documentation
Explanation
Documentation requirements are met. docs/developers-guide.md:591-595 documents the seed-name encoding, pinned EFF word order, byte-to-radix compatibility rule, and the removal of the general compression-library requirement. docs/backend-sample-data-design.md:103-114,227-237 records the algorithm, compatibility contract, tests, and replacement dependencies. docs/wildside-backend-architecture.md:340-352 records the dated design decision and abstraction boundary, while roadmap item 2.4.4 remains checked at docs/backend-roadmap.md:122-126. No new ExecPlan was added, and the pre-existing completed seed-registry ExecPlan remains historical as permitted by the check.
Full details: Testing (Property / Proof)
Explanation
PASS. The change introduces a range-wide seed-name compatibility invariant over every u64 seed. It adds proptest as a development dependency (crates/example-data/Cargo.toml:22) and an integration property-test target (crates/example-data/tests/properties.rs:1-9). seed_names.rs:52-85 generates arbitrary u64 values, compares the production encoder with an independent base-256 reference implementation, and checks determinism and name-format invariants. The saved regression cases and existing fixed examples provide additional coverage. No exhaustive proof obligation was introduced.
Full details: Testing (Compile-Time / Ui)
Explanation
PASS: The Rust changes add runtime seed-name encoding, not compile-time behaviour, so no trybuild test is required. The text output is a deterministic compatibility label rather than a broad UI or serialized response. Tests assert exact names for representative seeds and use independent property-based reference encoding across arbitrary u64 values (crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/tests.rs:343-353; crates/example-data/tests/properties/seed_names.rs:52-85). A snapshot would add little value and could duplicate these focused, stable assertions.
Full details: Domain Architecture
Explanation
Keep the new boundary. The seed-name policy now lives in crates/example-data/src/seed_name.rs:28-82 and accepts a generic dictionary without filesystem, CLI, or provider dependencies (:1-10). The CLI adapter owns the diceware_wordlists lookup and maps SeedNameError to CliError in crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/seed_name.rs:3-41. seed_registry_cli/mod.rs:292-295 and :362-371 delegate to the domain function. The pull request therefore removes the former vendor-specific encoder from the CLI adapter without introducing adapter or transport concerns into domain logic.
Full details: Observability
Explanation
Pass. The PR changes dependency resolution, audit policy, and a standalone example-data seed-registry CLI. It does not add or alter a running service, queue, storage boundary, or asynchronous process that requires new metrics, traces, or alerts. The CLI already reports success on stdout and errors on stderr with a failure exit code (crates/example-data/src/bin/example_data_seed.rs:14-22,32-36). The new word-list failures map to actionable CliError messages (crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/error.rs:35-59). The seed-name change includes deterministic compatibility tests, and the frontend changes are dependency-only.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The pull request description directly matches the changeset. It explains the Rust dependency replacement, seed-name compatibility work, shellexpand removal, frontend dependency updates, audit exceptions, tests, documentation, and CI changes.
Full details: Testing (Overall)
Explanation
The main EFF path has strong coverage: the independent property oracle and fixed seed cases exercise conversion and compatibility, and the deepmerge tests exercise both removal conditions. However, the new public seed_name_from_value API accepts arbitrary dictionaries and defines SeedNameError::EmptyDictionary (crates/example-data/src/seed_name.rs:15-23,59-80). All added seed tests call seed_name_for_seed with the provider's non-empty EFF list (crates/example-data/tests/properties/seed_names.rs:54-83), so they do not test the new error contract or small custom dictionaries. A regression that mishandles an empty dictionary, or loops forever for a one-word dictionary because division by one leaves the value unchanged, would pass the tests. The compatibility tests also obtain the expected words from the same diceware_wordlists provider as production, so they do not pin the full EFF word order; the four literals cover only selected entries.
Resolution
Add direct tests for seed_name_from_value with an empty dictionary, small dictionaries, seed zero, and the one-word-dictionary boundary. Define and implement terminating behaviour for a one-word dictionary before testing it. Add an independent compatibility check for the complete EFF word list order, such as a checked fixture or stable digest, rather than using the production provider for both sides. Keep the existing independent radix property tests and CLI integration tests.
Full details: Module-Level Documentation
Explanation
Add complete module documentation to crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/seed_name.rs. Its module doc at line 1 only states “Deterministic seed names using the EFF long word list.” It does not explain the module's utility or its relationship to the domain encoder and CLI error surface. The function-level comments do not replace the required module-level documentation.
Resolution
Extend the //! documentation in crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/seed_name.rs to state that the module supplies the pinned EFF long dictionary to the CLI and converts SeedNameError into CliError, while preserving compatibility with the domain encoder. Keep the existing function documentation.
Full details: Testing (Unit And Behavioural)
Explanation
The change adds strong compatibility coverage, but it does not test the new domain error paths or dictionary edge cases. seed_name_from_value explicitly returns SeedNameError::EmptyDictionary at crates/example-data/src/seed_name.rs:59-62, and exposes IndexOutOfRange at :20-24; no test references either variant. The property tests at crates/example-data/tests/properties/seed_names.rs:52-85 use only the fixed 7,776-word EFF list, so they do not exercise the caller-supplied dictionary boundary. A one-word dictionary is also an untested non-terminating case because division by radix one leaves number unchanged at seed_name.rs:67-80. Existing CLI behavioural tests cover registry persistence, and the new property tests independently check all u64 seeds, so the gap is specific to local edge and error behaviour.
Resolution
Add focused unit tests for empty dictionaries, small dictionaries, and SeedNameError to CliError conversion. Define finite behaviour for a one-word dictionary, such as rejecting radix one with an explicit error, and test that behaviour. Retain the existing independent property and CLI persistence coverage.
Full details: Unit Architecture
Explanation
The new domain query hides an invalid-input failure. seed_name_from_value accepts any non-empty dictionary and documents only EmptyDictionary and IndexOutOfRange errors (crates/example-data/src/seed_name.rs:44-48). For a one-word dictionary, radix is 1 (:60-69), so dividing number by radix at :79 does not reduce number; the while loop never terminates. The public API therefore hangs instead of exposing the invalid radix as an explicit error. The CLI adapter correctly keeps word-list loading separate and maps domain errors to CliError (crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/seed_name.rs:9-15), and registry I/O remains in the command boundary (crates/example-data/src/seed_registry_cli/mod.rs:235-245).
Resolution
Reject dictionaries with fewer than two words before the loop. Add a dedicated SeedNameError variant for the invalid radix, map it through CliError, and add unit tests for empty and one-word dictionaries. Keep the pure encoder separate from the CLI provider and command I/O.
Keep decimal seed bytes in line. Divide by words; preserve their order. Join each name with hyphens. Check the ledger and its limits. Let saved names stay unchanged.

GHSA-3g3m-2fjr-6pw4 (glob, patched in 14.0.2) and GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249
(minimatch, patched in 11.0.1) were published after the first audit fix.
Raise the pnpm overrides and the Bun resolutions together, and add the
missing Bun minimatch resolution so bun audit resolves the patched copy.
minimatch 11 removes matchOne, which typedoc 0.28.20 calls, so a blanket
bump to 11.0.1 broke the documentation gate. glob 14 takes the patched
11.0.1 on its own; the blanket minimatch override becomes a ranged floor.
GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249 covers the remaining 10.x copies that only typedoc
and markdownlint-cli reach at development time, so it takes a 14-day
ledger entry with a removal-invariant test (issue 575).
Pin install-whitaker to shared-actions 5a99aed78ce68dcebd3052b75c31e6f173162b1e,
which defaults the installer to 0.2.11 and builds the Dylint driver from a
verified Clippy snapshot. Upstream Dylint 6.0.1 clones Clippy's deleted master
branch, so every cold driver build failed. Any explicit installer-version is set
to 0.2.11.
The estate contract allows one shared-actions commit, and the Whitaker
repin made install-whitaker the odd one out. Move every reference, the
coverage tool cache key and the tests that name the pin to the approved
5a99aed78ce68dcebd3052b75c31e6f173162b1e (concordat QG-002).
A dictionary of one word makes the radix one, so seed_name_from_value
never returned. Reject it with DictionaryTooShort, test the empty,
one-word, two-word and seed-zero boundaries and the CLI error mapping,
document the adapter module, point the architecture note at the encoder,
and make the deepmerge exception also fail when a workspace declares
deepmerge or anything new depends on its bundled copy.
Closing as superseded: #567 was merged into main at 05:08Z, and it carries the compression fix, the qs pin, the deepmerge, minimatch and glob exceptions and the one-word dictionary guard that this branch re-applied. The remaining piece, the shared-actions and install-whitaker repin to 5a99aed7 (without the installer-sha256 workaround), continues in #573.

The unusedshellexpandshim is removed.qspin goes to 6.16.1 (GHSA-6pq8-jhm2-2vcw), andglobgoes to 14.0.2 (GHSA-3g3m-2fjr-6pw4), which takes the patchedminimatch11.0.1. Both were published after the first audit run on this branch.minimatchGHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249:typedoc0.28.20 andmarkdownlint-cli0.48.0 (both latest) declareminimatch10, andtypedocfails on 11 (mini.matchOne is not a function, seen in this PR's first CI run), so they take a 14-day exception,MINIMATCH_GLOBPARTS_DOS_2026_10, tracked in Except minimatch GHSA-g3hv-75wg-m249 until typedoc and markdownlint-cli accept minimatch 11 #575, with a removal-invariant test (mutation-proved: raising the patched floor, or dropping a permitted parent, each fails a test).deepmergeGHSA-gcqx-w48m-w2h4 has no patched release (4.3.1 is the last), so it takes a 14-day exception insecurity/audit-exceptions.jsonwith a removal-invariant test, tracked in Remove the deepmerge audit exception once a patched release reaches the tree #570.This re-applies the content of the open robot-house PR #567 (untouched, hands-off) on current main, without that PR's own Whitaker installer change.
It also carries the pin-only commit of #573 (install-whitaker to
5a99aed78ce68dcebd3052b75c31e6f173162b1e, installer 0.2.11), unchanged. The two blocked each other: #573'sbuildwas red only at Audit, while this branch'sbuildis red atWhitaker lint(Dylint cloning Clippy's deletedmaster) without the repin. With both, thebuildjob passes its Audit and Whitaker lint steps, and its lint log is the evidence of a real Whitaker run. The workflow contract allows the estate one shared-actions commit, so every other reference (ci.yml,coverage-main.yml,dependabot-automerge.yml,mutation-testing.yml,audit.yml), the coverage tool cache key and the two tests that name the pin move from6cec89bato the same approved commit (a descendant:6cec89bais an ancestor of5a99aed7). #573 is closed as superseded once this merges.Gates:
