A step of #9898, following #10717 (merged), which keeps a constant's Class.new or Module.new block as the class's frame at the write; this PR binds the block's parameter (Class.new do |k|) to that class. This moves answers.

Probed at master 57107870c, macOS, Apple clang 21.

X = Class.new do |k|
  p k == self
  def a = 1
end
p X.new.a

M = Module.new do |m|
  p m.equal?(self)
end

Z = Class.new do |k|
  K2 = k
end
p K2.equal?(Z), K2.name
CRuby master this PR
X = Class.new do |k| p k == self end true false true
M = Module.new do |m| p m.equal?(self) end true false true
Z = Class.new do |k| K2 = k end; p K2.equal?(Z), K2.name true, "K2" NameError (uninitialized constant K2) true, "K2"
X = Class.new do K2 = self end; p K2.name "K2" "X::K2" "K2"
Y = Class.new do |k; z| z = 1; p k.equal?(self), z end beside an outer k = 7 true, 1, outer k stays 7 false, 1, 7 true, 1, 7

Every row holds in both load models, and #10717's head (f35f71bbd) answers as master.

  • A constant's Class.new or Module.new block stays the class's frame at the write #10717 keeps the block as the class's frame, but its parameter stayed the block's own local, bound to nothing: k == self was false, and K2 = k wrote nil.
  • A constant written in the block with the class (K2 = self) named the class under the frame's class ("X::K2"): the constant write's name took the class body being emitted as the constant's scope, which a header's body is but a builder's block is not.

The block's parameter is a lowering row of its own (desugar_builder_block_param, analyze_desugar.c, run ahead of body-local-scopes). The block runs once, at the write, with the class as its one argument, so its parameter is a local of the body that holds the class: k = self becomes the body's first statement and the block loses its parameters; body-local-scopes then gives the local a name private to the body. The row takes one plain required parameter of a constant's builder (class_def_builder). it, _1, |k, j|, |*a|, |k = 1| and a block parameter keep their block, and their answers, as on master.

A constant's name is its lexical scope's (load record, analyze_elab.c; codegen_stmt.c reads it). The constant write's class name reads the load record's cref, the write's lexical scope, elab_cref_at (the record's lr_cref, exported beside elab_self_at): a builder's block keeps the scope it is written in, so K2 = self names the class K2 at the top level, and A::K2 inside module A. In a class or module body the scope is the body's class, as before; in a class << x body, where the record knows no scope, the write keeps the class body's. Besides K2 = k, it fixes three programs that master answers wrong the same way: X = Class.new { SELF = self }; p SELF.name ("SELF"; master "X::SELF"), S = Struct.new(:a) do SELF = self end; p SELF.name ("SELF"; master "S::SELF") and module A; X = Class.new do K2 = self end; end; p A::K2.name ("A::K2"; master "A::X::K2").

Refusal changes (each program answered wrong on master): any call through the parameter that the analysis does not lower on a local, structural or not, for example k.send(:define_method, :a) { 1 }, k.define_method(:a) { 1 }, k.attr_accessor :z, k.send(:attr_reader, :r), k.instance_methods(false), k.instance_method(:a), k.instance_variable_set(:@v, 1): "unsupported call: ... recv=LocalVariableReadNode", where master ran the call on a parameter bound to nil (NoMethodError, or FrozenError for instance_variable_set).

Follow-up, not in this PR: at the block's own level, outside nested blocks and defs, a read of a parameter the block never reassigns is self. Lowering those reads to self would bind k.define_method, k.attr_accessor and the calls above as self-calls, which the analysis supports, and turn these refusals into right answers.

Not covered, also on master:

  • A block parameter in another shape: it, _1, |k, j|, |*a|, |k = 1|, |(k)|, |k,|, a block parameter; a parameter of a local's builder (x = Class.new do |k|), of a Struct.new or Data.define block, or of a path write's builder (A::B = Class.new do |k|), which stays a value.
  • A value constant written in a builder's block (Q = Class.new do R = Class.new end; p R.name) raises NameError for R.
  • A value constant written in a body nested in a builder's block, in a Module.new block or in a non-builder block or loop raises NameError: a class body inside a builder's block (X = Class.new do class Inner; K = Class.new; end end; p Inner::K), a Module.new block (M = Module.new do C = Class.new end; p C, also under a class or module), a builder in a class body (class B; X = Class.new do K = Class.new end; end; p B::K), [1].each { K = Class.new } or a while body in a module.
  • A constant written in a class Object body is named under Object: class Object; KO = Class.new; end; p KO prints Object::KO, where CRuby prints KO.
  • A class inside a block names its constant with the C name: [1].each do class Bar; K = Class.new; end end; p Bar::K raises NameError for Bar::Bar__K.
  • A class written in a class << self body is named without the #<Class:Foo>:: prefix.
  • A local's builder keeps the anonymous class as its constants' scope: kl = Class.new do K = self end; p K prints SpinelAnonClass1::K, where CRuby prints K.

C diff. A targeted diff in both load models against #10717's head (f35f71bbd), run from this branch's worktree: the 678 corpus programs that mention Class.new, Module.new, Struct.new, Data.define or = self (with 80 taken at random), the 73 benchmarks and optcarrot: 752 programs. All identical but the new test, besides packages/sqlite3/test/sqlite3_basic.rb and test/class_value_unnamed_beside_called_module.rb, whose C embeds the compiler's own revision and its package path. Optcarrot's and every benchmark's C is unchanged. make cident against master 57107870c: 11,329 programs identical; of the 26 that differ, 25 come from master since 57107870c and one is the new test.

Tests. test/class_new_block_param.rb groups the block parameter: |k| in a Class.new and a Module.new block, beside a block-local (|k; z|) and an outer k, and a constant the block writes with the parameter. It passes plain, under --int-overflow=promote and under SPINEL_GC_STRESS=1, in both load models; master answers it wrong. The #9898 series' 100-program probe set moves 3 programs to right in both load models (c21 and n08 by the parameter, n11 by the name: inline right 65 -> 68, graph 66 -> 69) and n07 from wrong to refused (the define_method call through |k| above), and changes no other line; of 150 programs on builders and their parameters, 16 move to right and 7 from wrong to refused (above), and none other changes. The #10717 series' Struct and Data probe set moves k21 to right in both load models (K = self in a builder's block, the name above: right 104 -> 105) and changes no other line. tools/load_graph_check.sh, make infer-test and tools/analysis_forms_check.sh pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Class.new and Module.new blocks now support a single required block parameter that refers to the class or module being created.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Constants assigned inside class-builder blocks now use the correct naming scope.
    • Block-local variables in class-builder blocks retain their expected behavior, including when they shadow an outer local.

`X = Class.new do |k| ... end` and `M = Module.new do |m| ... end` run
the block once, at the write, with the class as its one argument. Since
the constant's builder keeps its block as the class's frame, the
parameter was the block's own local, bound to nothing: `k == self`
answered false.

A lowering row of its own (desugar_builder_block_param, run ahead of
body-local-scopes) makes the parameter a local of the body that holds
the class: `k = self` becomes the body's first statement and the block
loses its parameters; body-local-scopes then gives the local a name
private to the body. The row takes one plain required parameter. `it`,
`_1`, `|k, j|`, `|*a|`, `|k = 1|` and a block parameter keep their block
and their answers.

A constant the block writes with the class (`K2 = k`, as `K2 = self`)
names the class under the block's lexical scope, as CRuby does: the
write named it under the frame's class (`"X::K2"`), the scope a header's
body has but a builder's block does not. The constant write's name now
asks the load record for the write's lexical scope (elab_cref_at, the
record's lr_cref exported beside elab_self_at).

Walkthrough

The compiler now lowers eligible Class.new and Module.new block parameters to self before body-local scope processing. Class-valued constant writes use the lexical scope class to determine the class name. Tests cover parameter behavior and constant naming.

Changes: Class-builder block parameters

Layer / File(s) Summary
Builder-block parameter lowering
src/analyze_internal.h, src/analyze_desugar.c, src/analyze_lower.c, src/analyze.c, test/class_new_block_param.rb
The lowering matches blocks with one named required parameter, assigns self to that local, removes the parameter list, and runs before body-local scope lowering. Tests cover class and module identity, method definitions, and local-variable behavior.
Lexical scope for constant writes
src/analyze.h, src/analyze_elab.c, src/codegen_stmt.c, test/class_new_block_param.rb, test/class_new_block_param.rb.expected
elab_cref_at returns the lexical scope class for a node with a load point. Class-valued constant writes use that scope to name the class. The test checks the constant value and names.
