Related to #2907

@Jarred-Sumner: this changes a default without a flag, which #46021 took out. Notes has the choices.

Problem

  • From the ninth entry point, bun build and Bun.build() use the working directory as the default root. 8 files in pages/ build to out/page0.js, 9 to out/pages/page0.js.
  • A 9-entry bun build --compile binary fails new Worker(new URL("./workers/w0.ts", import.meta.url)): ModuleNotFound resolving "/$bunfs/root/workers/w0.ts" (entry point).
  • Cause: a second loop for 9 or more inputs in get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic (src/paths/resolve_path.rs:171) returns None where two inputs differ.

Fix

  • The loop for 2 to 8 inputs runs for every count. It already takes the count at run time.
  • More than 8 inputs: an input is the directory only if every longer input continues with a separator. Else ./cli.ts ./cli/w0.ts ... with 9 entries gets out/_.._/cli.js.
  • 2 to 8 entry points build as on main.
  • Verified: 33 new tests (17 fail without the fix), 7 unit tests (4 fail). Self-reviewed: 11 concerns raised, 10 addressed, 1 rejected (Notes).

Background

  • The default root is the directory that output names start from. Callers compute it from the typed entry points.
  • Not taken: the same deletion in longest_common_path. It changes the build summary.

Downsides

Notes

The decision, for @Jarred-Sumner

Behavior changes. "Main" is a debug build of the merge base 11c3671. For 9 or more inputs this revision and the first revision compute the same answer, so the probes of the first revision with 9 or more entry points hold.

  1. 9 or more entry points, no root, a common directory that is not the working directory. bun build pages/a.ts ... --outdir out with 9 files: out/pages/a.js becomes out/a.js. The same applies to BuildArtifact.path (_.._/<path>/pages/a.js becomes ./a.js), the output keys of the metafile, [dir] in naming, --no-bundle output, the files of --dts, and the exports keys and main of bun compile --library. The command of bun build: --cwd conflicts with file globbing #2907 with 11 entry points writes dist/alg/index.js, not dist/src/cubing/alg/index.js.
  2. bun build --compile without --aot, 9 or more entry points. The module names in the executable start at the common directory. For entry points in src/: new Worker(new URL("./workers/w0.ts", import.meta.url)) and new Worker("./workers/w0.ts") start to load. new Worker("./src/workers/w0.ts") stops: ModuleNotFound. The build exits 0 in both cases, and the rebuilt program still works when it runs in the project directory, because a name that is not in the executable is looked up on disk. docs/compiler/compatibility.mdx:1047 on main states the rule that 2 to 8 entry points and --aot already follow: "from the folder that all of them share".
  3. 9 or more entry points whose root depended on their order. pages/p0.ts ... pages/p7.ts app.ts gave the root pages/: p0.js and _.._/app.js. Now the root is the working directory for both orders: pages/p0.js and app.js.
  4. 9 or more entry points on a typed directory that is not a directory fail as 2 to 8 do: ENOENT opening root directory "pkg/" from bun build, ENOENT: failed to open root directory: pkg/ thrown by Bun.build. I probed 18 builds with 9 entry points: package subpaths, scoped packages, plugin names and a missing directory, through bun build, --no-bundle, and Bun.build with throw true and false. 14 go from 9 written files to ENOENT. 1 goes from exit 0 with no output to exit 1. 1 goes from success: false to a throw at the call. 2 fail on main and here. All 18 report what 2 entry points report on main.
  5. 9 or more entry points whose files are not in the typed directory get _.._ names at exit 0, as 2 to 8 do. Examples: pkg/m0.js ... from node_modules beside an unrelated ./pkg/ directory, and an entry point typed without its extension beside a directory of that name (./pub for pub.js, with ./pub/a0.js ...). Main wrote these from the working directory. The same applies to a file that is not an entry point: an asset in a sibling directory gets _.._ in [dir], and in a --compile binary the name /$bunfs/root/../assets/logo.png.
  6. 9 or more entry points of --dts or bun compile --library that import a source outside their common directory exit 1 as 2 to 8 do: cannot write a declaration file for ... because it is outside the root directory ... Pass --root to change it. No release has these two commands.
  7. 9 or more .js entry points with an --outdir that is their own directory are replaced, as 1 to 8 are. Main wrote the outputs to lib/lib/. On 1.4.3-canary 367d939, bun build ./lib/m0.js ... --outdir lib replaces the sources with 1 and with 2 entry points, and writes lib/lib/ with 9.

The way back for each item is the root that main used: --root . or root: "." where main used the working directory (items 1, 2, 4 to 7), and the directory that main picked (--root pages) in item 3. For item 4 --root . gives the result and the files of main in all 18 probed builds.

Not changed

  • An explicit root, a single entry point, and 2 to 8 entry points. That includes the root that leaves one of 2 to 8 entry points outside: ./pub/a.js ./pubx/b.js keeps pub/ (a.js and _.._/pubx/b.js), and ./cli.ts ./cli/worker.ts keeps cli/. With 9 or more entry points of these shapes the root stays the working directory.
  • ./pub ./pub/a.js reads ./pub as the directory at every count. pages pages/a.ts has no separator before the end of the shorter name, and keeps the working directory at every count.
  • longest_common_path and relative(). The loop for 9 or more inputs in longest_common_path still sets the width of the bun build summary (build_command.rs:916), where 9 outputs get one more space than 8. --aot folds that function in pairs for this reason (src/bundler/aot/options.rs:424).
  • The callers still compare the entry points as they are typed. ./pub/a.js pub/c.js keeps the working directory as the root.
  • Source map sources are relative to --outdir, not to the map file (Sourcemap source root not clear #3332). An output that moves keeps the same sources.
  • bun a.html b.html derives its routes in src/js/internal/html.ts with another prefix function.
  • Not checked: Windows and macOS at run time, and volumes that ignore letter case.

Measurements (Linux x64, this revision, unless the line names the first revision)

  • Size: get_if_exists_longest_common_path 972 to 762 bytes. longest_common_path has 959 bytes on both. The numbers are from cargo build --release -p bun_paths and nm -S on the rlib. I did not make a full release build.

  • Instructions for each call of the function (release test binary, gdb single-step). The function runs one time for each build.

    Inputs main this PR
    2 of pages/pageN.ts 417 431
    8 1,289 1,363
    9 242 1,432
    2 of /home/user/project/src/pages/pageN.ts 1,130 1,190
    8 3,796 4,054
    9 541 4,445
  • Root block of bun build (first revision, debug builds, gdb catch syscall): 3 syscalls (openat, readlink, close) at 8 and at 9 entry points, before and after. At 9 only the path of the openat changes, from . to pages/. The function allocates nothing.

  • Fuzz against the function of main: 800,000 seeded sets of 2 to 14 paths. 2 to 8 inputs (431,055 sets): 0 answers differ. 9 to 14 inputs (368,945 sets): 277,567 answers differ. Of the answers for 9 to 14 inputs, 1,604 leave an input outside on main and 0 do here. A bare input X counts as inside X/.

  • bun build summary with an explicit root and 9 outputs (first revision): 0 lines differ between main and this PR.

  • The repro builds 2, 8, 9 and 12 entry points of pages/ through bun build and Bun.build. 1.4.3-canary 367d939 prints pages/page0.js as the first output at 9 and at 12. This head prints page0.js for each build.

Tests

  • src/paths/resolve_path.rs: 7 unit tests. 4 fail with the function of main. One pins the answers of 2 to 8 inputs, and it fails if the last step applies to every count. CI runs them with cargo miri test.
  • test/bundler/bundler_naming.test.ts: naming/ImplicitOutbaseManyEntryPoints/{api,cli}/{8,9}, naming/ImplicitOutbaseOfTypedEntryPoints/<shape>/{api,cli}/{2,9} for 4 shapes, and naming/ImplicitOutbaseAssetDir/{8,9}. 7 of the 22 fail on main. The others are the controls. The two sibling shapes pin names that do not change: the names of the releases at 2, and the names from the working directory at 9.
  • test/bundler/cli.test.ts: --no-bundle with 9 entry points, with and without --root=., and 3 rows that compare 9 entry points with 2: package files, two times, and an --outdir that is the directory of the entry points. All 4 fail on main.
  • test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts: BuildArtifact.path of 9 entry points from another working directory, and 9 plugin names in a missing directory compared with 2. Both fail on main.
  • test/bundler/bundler_compile.test.ts: compile/WorkerURLManyEntryPoints fails on main. compile/WorkerRelativePathManyEntryPointsRoot shows --root . as the way back and passes on both.
  • test/cli/compile/compile-library.test.ts: the exports of 9 entry points. It fails on main.
  • test/bundler/bun-build-dts.test.ts: the files of 9 entry points, and a source outside the root compared with 2. Both fail on main.
  • The rows that compare 9 entry points with 2 do not pin what 2 get. They pass before and after Bun.build, bun build: use the working directory when the default root does not exist #45176 and bundler: refuse to write an output file over one of the build's inputs #41612.
  • Where the 17 failures were seen. This revision: the 14 rows of the naming, CLI, API and --compile files fail on 1.4.3-canary 367d939. The 3 rows of --dts and --library did not change since the first revision, where they failed on a debug build of main. No release has these commands.
  • Suites run on a debug build of this revision: cargo test -p bun_paths, bundler_naming.test.ts, cli.test.ts, and the new rows of the 4 other files. One older --compile test in cli.test.ts reaches its 5 s timeout on the debug build.
  • Suites run on the first revision: the 6 test files above, bundler_edgecase, bundler_regressions, bun-build-api-dts, esbuild/{default,dce,css,importstar}, test/regression/issue/32728.test.ts, bundler_splitting, bundler_plugin, bundler_files, bundler_html, html-import-manifest, metafile, esbuild/{splitting,metafile,loader} and the node:path relative and resolve tests. The failures were older tests that reach a timeout on the local debug build. They fail in the same way on a debug build of the merge base.
  • Windows and macOS: cargo check -p bun_paths for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and aarch64-apple-darwin. The tests for these platforms run in CI only.

History

Self-review. 11 concerns raised on the first revision. 10 addressed: the --compile run time change and its way back, the entry point typed without an extension, --root . as the way back only where main used the working directory, files outside the typed directory, assets outside the root, replaced inputs, --dts and --library after the rebase, CLI rows for 2 entry points, the reach of the last step, and the comment. 1 rejected: a --compile test for the embedded name of an asset. It is one more executable build for a name that the [dir] test already pins. A later review raised the change for 2 to 8 entry points again, and this revision takes that change out. I did not run a second self-review for it.

Walkthrough

The common-path resolver uses one comparison loop for all input counts of two or more. For more than eight inputs, it accepts a directory boundary only when every longer input has a separator at that position. Regression tests cover path resolution, output placement, and build behavior across multiple entry points.

This change alters the default output root for builds with nine or more entry points, which can change output layout. When --outdir points at the entries' directory, the new root can make outputs overwrite their source files, and no guard prevents that. One narrow input shape still keeps the old extra directory level. Resolve or explicitly accept the overwrite behavior before merging.

Explanation

The title names the main change: the shared directory of 9 or more entry points becomes the default root for Bun.build and bun build. The changeset matches this. The raw summary says the per-index loop now runs for every count of two or more, and the 9+ path now uses the shared directory when every longer input continues with a separator. The title is specific and concise, and it is not vague.

LGTM — deletes the broken 9+ branch and lets the working loop handle every count.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced both functions: the surviving loop is byte-identical to the old 2..=8 arm, and nql_at_index_dyn already takes a runtime count, so 2-8 inputs (including relative()'s 2-input hot path) are unchanged.
  • Windows volume check hoisted out of the match: was duplicated verbatim in both arms; now runs once before min_length, which is read-only so the reorder is behavior-preserving.
  • Checked the empty-input case: min_length becomes 0, loop doesn't execute, index == 0 returns the separator — same as the old 2..=8 answer, no more index -= 1 underflow.
  • Tests cover the fix at three levels (Rust unit tests over 2..=20 inputs and edge cases; itBundled for both API/CLI backends; a spawned CLI test for the panic).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR fixes get_if_exists_longest_common_path and longest_common_path in src/paths/resolve_path.rs. Both functions previously had a match input.len() with a correct 2..=8 arm and a broken _ (9+) arm. The 9+ arm compared input[0] against each other input pairwise and only checked for a separator at the byte where each pair diverged, so it almost always missed the last common separator; it also executed index -= 1 when min_length == 0, panicking on an empty input. The fix deletes the 9+ arm entirely and lets the 2..=8 loop (which already takes the count as a runtime argument via nql_at_index_dyn) run for every n >= 2. The Windows volume-root check, which was duplicated verbatim in both arms of longest_common_path_generic, is hoisted out into a single loop over &input[1..]. The 0/1-input early returns are moved before the min_length scan, which is a pure reorder of read-only code.

Security risks

None. This is byte-string prefix computation over paths already in memory; no filesystem, network, allocation, or unsafe code is touched. The change strictly removes a panic reachable from CLI arguments (an empty entry point among 9+), which is a robustness improvement.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate. longest_common_path is called by relative(), which is on many hot paths, but the 2-input case that relative() exercises runs the exact same loop body as before — the only difference is that the Windows volume check now happens before the min_length scan instead of after, and both are pure reads. The 3-8 input cases are likewise unchanged. Only the 9+ case changes behavior, and it changes from wrong-or-panicking to matching what 2-8 already produced. I verified nql_at_index_dyn and nql_at_index_case_insensitive_dyn iterate 1..string_count with no upper bound assumption.

Other factors

Test coverage is thorough: four new Rust unit tests exercise 2 through 20 inputs, a directory that is itself an input, unrelated inputs, and empty inputs (both one-empty-among-many and all-empty), each asserting both function variants; bundler_naming.test.ts adds an itBundled case with 9 entry points for both api and cli backends checking the flat output layout via readdirSync; cli.test.ts spawns bun build with 8 real entries plus an empty string and asserts the ModuleNotFound error and exit code 1 instead of the panic. The PR description documents that three of the four unit tests fail against the old implementation, and that the bundler and node:path suites still pass. The diff is a net deletion of ~90 lines of duplicated logic. No CODEOWNERS entries cover these files, and there are no outstanding reviewer comments.

LGTM — the previous nit (undrained stdout pipe in the cli.test.ts helper) was addressed in bbf618a; this run found nothing further.

What was reviewed:

  • Both get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic and longest_common_path_generic: the deleted 9+ arm is replaced by the existing 2..=8 loop, which already takes string_count as a runtime argument via nql_at_index_dyn; 0/1 early-returns and the post-loop tail are unchanged.
  • Hoisting the Windows volume check before the min_length scan in longest_common_path_generic — the two are independent, so the 2-input path used by relative() is behaviorally identical.
  • Callers in build_command.rs:406/833 and JSBundler.rs:902 — both already handle the None/separator answers, so no downstream signature or behavior change beyond the fix itself.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR deletes the broken _ (9+) match arm in get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic and longest_common_path_generic in src/paths/resolve_path.rs. That arm compared input[0] against each other input pairwise and only recorded a separator at the divergence point, so it returned None / a one-byte prefix for practically any 9+ input set, and underflowed index -= 1 when the shortest input was empty. The fix routes all counts ≥2 through the loop that already handled 2..=8 (which calls nql_at_index_dyn(string_count, ...) with a runtime count). The Windows volume check in longest_common_path_generic is hoisted above the match into a single loop over inputs. Test coverage is added at three levels: Rust unit tests in the same file (2..=20 inputs, directory-as-input, unrelated inputs, empty input), an itBundled test for 9 entry points via both API and CLI backends in bundler_naming.test.ts, and a subprocess crash-regression test in cli.test.ts comparing 2-entry vs 9-entry error output.

Security risks

None. This is pure path-string prefix computation with no filesystem I/O, no user-controlled allocation sizing, and no unsafe blocks touched. The fix removes a user-reachable panic (integer underflow on index -= 1 with index == 0), which is strictly a hardening improvement.

Level of scrutiny

Medium. longest_common_path feeds relative(), which is on hot paths, but the 2-input case that relative() exercises is byte-for-byte identical to before except that the Windows volume check now precedes the min-length scan — both are independent reads of input, so the reorder is inert. The 9+ path was demonstrably broken, so any behavior change there is the fix, not a regression risk. The three call sites (build_command.rs:406, build_command.rs:833, JSBundler.rs:902) all pass entry-point/output-path lists and already handle the fallback answers (.unwrap_or(b"."), or a separator prefix).

Other factors

  • My previous review's only finding (the stdout: "pipe" left undrained in the new cli.test.ts helper) was addressed in bbf618a by switching to stdout: "ignore", matching the two sibling tests above it.
  • The comment-cop bot's note about a paragraph-long comment was addressed in b541864.
  • Test coverage is thorough: the Rust unit tests assert the same answer across 2–20 inputs and specifically cover the empty-input underflow; the integration tests cover both Bun.build() and the CLI; the cli.test.ts test compares against the 2-entry baseline so it holds on all platforms without hardcoding platform-specific error text.
  • No CODEOWNER'd files touched.

Status for head 32781cc, three commits on main 11c3671.

How I reproduced it. A script builds 2, 8, 9 and 12 entry points of one directory through bun build and Bun.build. It prints the first output file of each build.

  • 1.4.3-canary 367d939: cli9=pages/page0.js and api9=pages/page0.js, and the same for 12 entry points. The controls with 2 and 8 print page0.js.
  • This head: each build prints page0.js.

CI. Build 134503 on this head: every regular test lane that ran is green (Linux x64, aarch64, musl and ASAN, Windows x64 and aarch64). Every failed job is a test-aot-drawn lane, and the 28 failing files are all under test/aot/, which this diff does not touch. Builds of unrelated PRs from the same hours fail in that suite too (build 134500 has 98 files under test/aot/). The darwin jobs have not started yet.

The description of #38732 lists each build whose result changes, and it has a question for a maintainer.

LGTM — deletes the broken 9+ arm and reuses the already-correct 2..=8 loop for all counts.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced both functions: the surviving loop is byte-identical to the previous 2..=8 arm; nql_at_index_dyn already took runtime n, so nothing about it depended on the ≤8 bound.
  • Checked the reordering in longest_common_path: the Windows volume check now runs before the min_length scan instead of after, but only after the 0/1 early returns, so input[0] / input[1..] are always valid and the 2-input path used by relative() is behaviorally unchanged.
  • Confirmed the prior undrained-stdout nit was addressed (stdout: "ignore"), and the comment-cop flag was resolved.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR fixes get_if_exists_longest_common_path and longest_common_path in src/paths/resolve_path.rs. Both previously matched on input.len() with a correct 2..=8 arm and a broken _ (9+) arm: the 9+ arm compared inputs pairwise, only checked for a separator at the divergence byte (so last_common_separator was never set on the first mismatch), and executed index -= 1 with index == 0 when the shortest input was empty, panicking. The fix deletes the 9+ arm entirely and hoists the 0/1 early returns and the Windows volume check out of the match, so the existing 2..=8 loop now handles every count ≥ 2. The nql_at_index_fn assignment is simplified from wrapping closures to bare function pointers. Four Rust unit tests, an itBundled test pair (api/cli), and a CLI subprocess test are added.

Security risks

None. This is pure path-string prefix computation over already-collected entry-point strings; no parsing of untrusted external data, no filesystem or network I/O in the changed code. The panic being removed was a user-reachable abort (DoS-class), so the fix strictly reduces risk.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate. longest_common_path feeds relative(), which is on hot paths, so I checked that the 2-input case is unchanged: the loop body is identical, and the only reorder (volume check before min_length scan) is two independent O(n) passes with no data dependency. The bundler's implicit-root derivation is user-visible but low-risk — the fix makes 9+ entries match the documented and already-correct ≤8 behavior rather than introducing new semantics.

Other factors

Test coverage is thorough at three levels: Rust unit tests sweep 2–20 inputs plus the specific edge cases (directory-as-input, unrelated inputs, empty input, all-empty), itBundled covers both the JS API and CLI backends, and the CLI test compares the 9-entry error against the 2-entry error so it holds across platforms without hardcoding message text. All prior review feedback (comment-cop, my undrained-stdout nit) is resolved and confirmed in the current diff. CI on Linux and Windows is green apart from an unrelated pre-existing flake.

This PR fixes get_if_exists_longest_common_path and longest_common_path in src/paths/resolve_path.rs, which previously had two separate match arms for input counts: a correct 2..=8 arm and a broken _ (9+) arm. The 9+ arm compared input[0] against each other input pairwise, only checked for a separator at the divergence point (so last_common_separator was almost always unset at first mismatch), and executed index -= 1 when index == 0 for empty inputs — a wrapping underflow / debug panic. The fix deletes the broken arm entirely and lets the working loop handle all counts ≥ 2, since nql_at_index_dyn already takes the count as a runtime argument. The Windows volume check in longest_common_path is hoisted out of the match into a single loop over &input[1..]. The eta-expanded fn-pointer closures are simplified to bare function names. Net effect on the source is deletion of ~60 lines of broken code.

Tests added: four Rust unit tests in the same file (2–20 inputs give the same answer, directory-as-input, unrelated inputs match the 2-input answer, empty input among many), an itBundled test in bundler_naming.test.ts covering both API and CLI backends with 9 entry points, and a CLI test in cli.test.ts comparing 2-entry vs 9-entry behavior with an empty entry point.

Security risks

None. This is pure byte-slice comparison over paths already held in memory; no unsafe blocks are touched, no allocation, no external input parsing beyond what the callers already do.

Level of scrutiny

Medium. The functions feed the bundler's implicit-root computation and path.relative(), so a regression would be visible, but the change is a strict simplification: the surviving code path is exactly the one that has been producing correct answers for 2–8 inputs. I traced the 0/1/2-input cases before and after — the early returns moved above the min_length loop but yield identical values, and the 2-input path (the hot one via relative()) is byte-for-byte the same loop body. The Windows volume check moving before min_length is safe because it reads only input[0..] and returns early on mismatch.

Other factors

All prior review feedback is resolved: the comment-cop flag on a long test comment was addressed in b541864, and my earlier inline comment about the undrained stdout pipe was addressed in bbf618a (stdout: "ignore" now matches the two sibling tests). The author reports CI passed on all lanes that ran (Linux x64/aarch64/musl/ASAN, Windows x64/aarch64, darwin aarch64), with the two darwin 14 lanes expiring in queue due to saturation but passing on the previous identical diff. The PR description demonstrates each new test fails against the old implementation. This is a well-scoped, well-tested deletion of broken code.

LGTM — the broken 9+ arm is deleted and the already-correct 2..=8 loop now handles every count; prior feedback (stdout pipe, comment-cop) is addressed.

What was reviewed:

  • Traced that the surviving loop is byte-identical to the old 2..=8 arm, so relative()'s 2-input path is unchanged (the Windows volume check moving before the min-length scan is order-independent).
  • Confirmed the only external callers are build_command.rs and JSBundler.rs (implicit root derivation), both of which want the fixed behavior.
  • Checked the new tests: Rust unit tests cover 2–20 inputs / directory-as-input / unrelated / empty; the cli.test.ts empty-entry test compares 9-entry against 2-entry output so it holds cross-platform; the itBundled tests exercise both API and CLI backends.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Removes the divergent 9+-input arm from get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic and longest_common_path_generic in src/paths/resolve_path.rs. The old _ arm compared input[0] against each other input pairwise, only checked for a separator at the divergence byte (so last_common_separator stayed unset), and executed index -= 1 on index == 0 when the shortest input was empty — an underflow panic. The fix hoists the 0/1 early returns, then runs the existing 2..=8 loop (which already takes a runtime n via nql_at_index_dyn) for every count ≥2. The Windows volume check in longest_common_path_generic becomes a plain for over &input[1..]. The closure-to-fn-pointer wrapping (|n,i,inp| f(n,i,inp) → f) is a clippy cleanup. Adds 4 Rust unit tests, 2 itBundled tests (api+cli), and 1 CLI subprocess test.

Security risks

None. This is safe Rust operating on byte slices of entry-point path strings with bounds-checked indexing; the change only removes an underflow site and unifies control flow. No untrusted-input parsing beyond what already existed for ≤8 inputs.

Level of scrutiny

Moderate. longest_common_path is on relative()'s hot path with exactly 2 inputs, so behavior preservation there matters. I verified the surviving loop body is unchanged from the old 2..=8 arm; the only reordering is the Windows volume check moving before the (independent) min-length scan. For 9+ inputs the behavior does change — that is the fix — and the only callers (build_command.rs:406/833, JSBundler.rs:902) want the corrected implicit-root answer.

Other factors

  • Both earlier review findings are resolved: the paragraph-long unit-test comment was removed (b541864) and the undrained stdout: "pipe" became stdout: "ignore" (bbf618a); the current diff reflects both.
  • CI on the current head passed 178/179 jobs; the one failure is an unrelated test/bake/deinitialization.test.ts flake also seen on other builds from the same hour.
  • Test design follows REVIEW.md: the empty-entry CLI test compares the 9-entry run against the 2-entry run rather than snapshotting a platform-specific error string, and asserts the 2-entry stderr is non-empty so the equality can't be vacuously satisfied. The Rust unit tests likewise assert 9-input answers equal 2-input answers rather than hard-coding what "nothing in common" returns.

LGTM — deletes the broken 9+ arm and reuses the already-correct loop for all input counts.

What was reviewed:

  • Verified the surviving loop is byte-identical to the previous 2..=8 arm; nql_at_index_dyn already takes a runtime count so no upper bound applies.
  • Checked the Windows volume-check hoist in longest_common_path_generic — pure reordering, no dependency on min_length, and the 2-input relative() path is unchanged.
  • Confirmed the earlier stdout: "pipe" nit was addressed (now "ignore"); new tests follow harness conventions and cover both backends plus Rust unit tests for 2..20 inputs, empty input, and the directory-as-input edge.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes two bugs in src/paths/resolve_path.rs's get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic and longest_common_path_generic: with 9+ inputs the old _ match arm produced wrong answers (didn't track last_common_separator per-byte) and panicked on an empty input via index -= 1 at index == 0. The fix deletes that arm entirely and lets the existing 2..=8 loop handle all counts ≥2 — it already takes the count as a runtime argument. The Windows volume-ID check is hoisted out of the match into a single loop, and the nql_at_index_fn closure wrappers become direct fn references. Tests are added at three levels: Rust unit tests (cargo test -p bun_paths), itBundled integration tests for 9 entry points via both API and CLI backends, and a CLI subprocess test for the empty-entry-point crash.

Security risks

None. This is pure byte-slice comparison over path strings the caller already holds; no allocation, no syscalls, no user-facing parsing changed. The removed code was the only path that could underflow.

Level of scrutiny

Medium-low. The change is a code deletion that unifies two implementations onto the one that has been producing correct answers for the heavily-exercised 2-input relative() case and all builds with ≤8 entry points. The only non-deletion changes are (a) moving the 0/1 early returns above the min-length scan and (b) hoisting the Windows volume check — both are pure reorderings of independent reads with no data dependency between them. I traced the 2-input path (used by relative()) through the new code and it is behaviorally identical.

Other factors

  • My previous inline nit (undrained stdout: "pipe") was addressed in bbf618a; the test now uses stdout: "ignore" matching its siblings.
  • The comment-cop note about a paragraph-long comment was addressed in b541864.
  • CI passed on all lanes per the author's report; the one Windows x64 failure is an unrelated test/bake/deinitialization.test.ts flake also seen on other builds from the same hour.
  • The PR description demonstrates the fix was verified against the released build (tests fail there, pass with the change) and lists the additional test files that were run.
  • Test coverage is thorough: the Rust unit tests assert equality between the 9-input answer and the 2-input answer for the edge cases (unrelated paths, empty input, all-empty), which directly pins the invariant the PR title states.

Sentry BUN-4QDT (bun 1.4.0, Windows, bun build) is this panic through the other caller: longest_common_path at src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs:833, the summary table prefix. The message there is index out of bounds: the len is 8 but the index is 18446744073709551615.

1.4.0 includes #35644. That change sets dest_path for Value::Buffer outputs only. An entry point that takes the copy arm of build_with_resolve_result_eager (the file, wasm, napi, html, sqlite, and bunsh loaders) still has an empty dest_path. With 9 or more outputs, that empty path reaches the deleted 9+ arm.

Repro on the released build (1.4.0 canary, Linux):

for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8; do echo "export const a$i = $i;" > file$i.ts; done
printf PNG > img.png
bun build --no-bundle --outdir=out file1.ts file2.ts file3.ts file4.ts file5.ts file6.ts file7.ts file8.ts img.png
# panic: index out of bounds: the len is 10 but the index is 18446744073709551615

The same command with 7 .ts files (8 outputs) exits 0.

I ran this branch's resolve_path.rs against that input shape (["./file1.js", ..., "./file8.js", ""]) with cargo test -p bun_paths. longest_common_path returns the separator and get_if_exists_longest_common_path returns Some("/"), the same answers as for 2 inputs, so the build continues past :833 the way the 8-output build does today.

The copied entry itself is a separate problem that this PR does not claim: the summary prints an empty name, the file is written next to the source, and on Windows OutputFile::copy_to hits panic!("TODO windows") (Sentry BUN-2T14, 30 events since 1.2.10). #38123 covers that arm.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.

…mber of entry points

get_if_exists_longest_common_path ran a second loop for 9 or more
inputs. That loop returned None at the first byte where two inputs
differ, so the default root of `bun build` and `Bun.build` was the
working directory from the ninth entry point on. The loop for 2 to 8
inputs now runs for every count.

The last step of the function took an input as a directory when one
longer input had a separator after it. It now requires that of every
longer input, as longest_common_path does, so the answer is a directory
that contains every input.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/paths/resolve_path.rs — Users with 9 or more entry points named through a plugin or as package subpaths now get a hard ENOENT opening root directory "pkg/" failure where the base wrote their files. The derived root at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:196 is now the typed common prefix (pkg/, no-such-directory/), and both callers open it on disk and exit 1 or throw. Fix: when the derived default root cannot be opened, fall back to . instead of failing, in both build_command.rs:511 and JSBundler.rs:1377, so virtual and package entry points of any count build. The PR flags this as accepted and owned by #45176; until that lands, every such 9+-entry build that works today breaks. [also at: src/paths/resolve_path.rs:192 - Builds with 9 or more entry points whose typed directory does not exist on disk now fail with ENOENT where the base branch wrote all outputs.; test/bundler/cli.test.ts:1035 - Users who build 9 or more package subpath entries such as pkg/m0.js while an unrelated ./pkg/ directory exists get exit 0 and their files silently moved to dist/_.._/node_modules/pkg/, where the base wrote dist/node_modules/pkg/.]

    Why this was flagged

A framework calls Bun.build({ entrypoints: ["routes/r0.js", ..., "routes/r8.js"], plugins: [onResolve to a virtual namespace] }) with no root, or a user runs bun build pkg/m0.js ... pkg/m8.js --outdir dist with pkg in node_modules. On the base the deleted 9+ arm returned None on the first differing byte, build_command.rs:506 / JSBundler.rs:1373 used ., and the build wrote 9 files from the working directory (test/bundler/cli.test.ts:1018 and bun-build-api.test.ts:887 exercise exactly these shapes). After src/paths/resolve_path.rs:159-196 the root becomes routes/ or pkg/; bun_sys::open_dir_at at build_command.rs:511 fails and prints ENOENT opening root directory "pkg/" then exits 1, and JSBundler.rs:1385 throws ENOENT: failed to open root directory: routes/ at the call. The new tests only assert that 9 behaves like 2, so they certify the failure rather than guard against it. No fallback exists in either caller when the derived root is not a real directory.

Verification: The PR description's "Downsides" bullet ("9 or more package or plugin entry points fail as 2 to 8 do: ENOENT opening root directory "pkg/"") states this exact cost, and the new tests pin it (test/bundler/cli.test.ts:1018 asserts nine == two, where two is the ENOENT exit). Nothing on the head path falls back to ..

  • 🟣 src/paths/resolve_path.rs — Users who type a directory entry without ./, such as bun build pages pages/a.ts, get root . and outputs under out/pages/, while ./pages ./pages/a.ts gets root pages/ and out/a.js. The early return at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:178 fires because no separator precedes the mismatch, so the directory-as-input fix-up at :189 never runs. The new test common_path_is_an_input_when_every_longer_input_is_inside_it and the PR's stated contract only cover inputs with a leading separator. Fix: when last_common_separator is None but index equals min_length and every longer input has a separator there, treat the shortest input as the directory, for any spelling; add a pages pages/a.ts case to the unit tests.

    Why this was flagged

Inputs pages and pages/a.ts reach index 5 == min_length with no separator seen (src/paths/resolve_path.rs:160-169); last_common_separator is None so :177-178 returns . before the fix-up at :189-193 can see that every longer input has / at index 5. The same inputs spelled ./pages ./pages/a.ts return ./pages/. The base has the same early return for 2-8 inputs and also returned . for 9+, so this is pre-existing, but the PR now advertises directory-as-input as a rule that holds at every count and tests only the separator-prefixed form. Three finders independently flagged it. Population: every CLI user who passes a bare directory name among entry points, at every build. Remedy: run the all-longer-inputs check before the None early return.

Verification: pre-existing. For inputs pages and pages/a.ts, the loop at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:160-169 never sees a separator, so :177-178 returns . before the directory-as-input fix-up at :189-193 can run. The base's 2..=8 arm had the identical early return. The new test common_path_is_an_input_when_every_longer_input_is_inside_it only exercises /app/pages with a leading separator.

The rule that every longer input has to continue with a separator now
applies to more than 8 inputs only, where the deleted loop ran. Up to 8
inputs take the folder of the first input that continues with one, as
before. The naming tests pin the released names for 2 entry points, and
the --compile test of the 2 entry point case is gone.

Minor · Check directory continuation before returning ".". · resolve_path.rs:177

src/paths/resolve_path.rs:177
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check directory continuation before returning ".".

For nine inputs such as "pub" and "pub/a0.js" through "pub/a7.js", the scan finds no separator in the shared prefix. This guard returns "." before the new boundary check can select "pub/". Builds that use the resolver as their implicit root therefore retain the extra pub/ output level. Check whether every longer input continues with a separator before this return, and add the bare-directory case to the tests. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The second commit keeps the 2–8 entry-point root as on the base (the input.len() <= 8 gate at src/paths/resolve_path.rs:192), which addresses the output-path move I raised on the previous revision. Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things and ruled them out: the exact 8-vs-9 boundary is pinned by the new Rust unit tests (7 files plus a sibling gives ./pub/, 8 plus a sibling gives ./), so the TypeScript matrix not hitting 8 is not a coverage gap; and the deleted 9+ arm's Windows case-insensitive comparison is preserved, since the surviving arm dispatches to nql_at_index_case_insensitive_dyn for Platform::Windows.

Extended reasoning...

The change is confined to one Rust path helper, get_if_exists_longest_common_path_generic in src/paths/resolve_path.rs, which derives the bundler's default root for 9 or more entry points, plus Rust unit tests and TypeScript bundler tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. The remaining behavioral change for 9+ entry points is a deliberate default change the author has flagged for maintainer decision, and the inline findings already signal that a human look is needed, so this note only records what else was examined.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Replies to the review findings that are outside the diff:

  • 9 or more package or plugin entry points fail with ENOENT opening root directory "pkg/". 2 to 8 entry points fail the same way on main. Bun.build, bun build: use the working directory when the default root does not exist #45176 makes a default root that does not exist fall back to the working directory for every count, in the same two call sites, so this PR does not add a second fallback. The description lists the failure under Downsides with --root . as the way back, and it asks the maintainer whether this lands before or after Bun.build, bun build: use the working directory when the default root does not exist #45176.
  • A directory that is typed with no separator before it (pages pages/a.ts, or pub pub/a0.js ...) keeps the working directory as the root. That is the answer of main at every count, and this PR keeps it. A change there moves the outputs of builds with 2 to 8 entry points, which this PR leaves alone. The description lists it under "Not changed".

Block output writes that resolve to an input source.

With nine or more entries and --outdir set to the entries' directory, the default root can become that directory. For ./lib/m0.js through ./lib/m8.js with --outdir lib, output m0.js is written to lib/m0.js, which is the source file. The output loop in src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs calls f.write_to_disk(root_dir.fd) with no input-path check. write_to_disk in src/bundler/OutputFile.rs writes the buffer to dest_path under root_dir without checking whether that path is an input. Sources are read before this write, so a source file can be replaced on disk. The previous fallback root placed these outputs under lib/lib/, so nine-entry builds that were safe can now overwrite sources.

The 2–8 entry path uses the same root rule, so the same overwrite appears to occur there. This is inferred from the shared code path and was not fully observed. A guard limited to nine or more entries would leave that path unchanged. A guard for every entry count would change the 2–8 behavior that this PR keeps. Choose the policy first. Then reject any output path that equals an entry point before the write loop, and report the colliding path as an error.

On the finding about output files that replace their sources (outside the diff, resolve_path.rs:159):

  • The check that it asks for is bundler: refuse to write an output file over one of the build's inputs #41612. That PR refuses to write an output over an input of the same build, for every count. This PR does not add a second check.
  • What this PR changes for that case: 9 or more .js entry points with their own directory as --outdir. On 1.4.3-canary 367d939, bun build ./lib/m0.js ... --outdir lib replaces the sources with 1 and with 2 entry points, and writes lib/lib/ with 9. With this PR, 9 entry points get what 1 to 8 get.
  • The description lists it under Downsides and as item 7 of the behavior changes, with --root . as the way back. The order with no replaced file is bundler: refuse to write an output file over one of the build's inputs #41612 first, then this PR. That order is for the maintainer to decide.
