Fixes #47237

Problem

  • bun build --compile src/main.ts ./src/w/worker.ts resolves new Worker() paths against different roots with and without --aot: Cannot find module './w/worker.ts' in one, './src/w/worker.ts' in the other.
  • bun build (build_command.rs:506) and Bun.build() (JSBundler.rs:1372) take the longest common prefix of the typed entry points, which can end inside a name (resolve_path.rs:217). --aot makes them absolute first.

Fix

  • common_entry_directory (src/bundler/options.rs) computes the default root for all three from absolute paths, ending at a path separator.
  • Exception (Bun 1.4 regression: compiled parent entrypoints are renamed from ../ to _.._ #32728): ../worker.js does not lift the root above an entry point in the working directory.
  • bun build and Bun.build() use the working directory when the shared directory fails to open (ENOENT, ENOTDIR, ELOOP, EACCES): a package or a plugin resolves the names, or the user may not list it.
  • Verified: 21 new tests in test/bundler/, 13 fail on 1.4.3.

Background

  • Output names start at the root. --compile embeds /$bunfs/root/<path from root>, which a relative new Worker() path resolves against.
  • Not taken: the as-typed rule for --aot, whose root changes with ./.

Downsides

  • New names without --root: mixed spellings, an entry point outside the working directory, nine or more entry points, names where one begins with the other.
  • Two to eight entry points in one spelling whose shared directory does not open now build (main: ENOENT opening root directory, EACCES). With --outdir ., package names write over the package's files, as mixed spellings do on main (bundler: refuse to write an output file over one of the build's inputs #41612).
  • Cost per multi-entry build: one Vec per entry point plus four. One more openat after a failed one.
Notes

Probe of the rule on main. Same two files, three spellings, bun build --compile:

entry points root ./src/w/worker.ts ./w/worker.ts
src/main.ts ./src/w/worker.ts cwd ok Cannot find module
src/main.ts src/w/worker.ts src Cannot find module ok
./src/main.ts ./src/w/worker.ts src Cannot find module ok

--aot gives the src row for all three. Plain bun build --outdir has the same spelling dependence (dist/src/main.js for the first row, dist/main.js for the other two), on 1.4.3 too.

Names where one begins with the other. The prefix of main ends where the typed entry points first differ. Then the last loop of get_if_exists_longest_common_path returns at the first input that continues with a path separator, and does not check the other inputs (src/paths/resolve_path.rs:217). longest_common_path, which common_entry_directory folds, needs the separator in every longer input (src/paths/resolve_path.rs:349).

Files in --outdir. bun build and Bun.build() give the same names in every row.

  • Rows 1 and 4 give the same result on each build with absolute entry points and in the reversed order. Row 1 does too with a third entry point (./abd/z.js).
  • Row 5 is right on 1.4.3 by accident. No path separator comes before the names, so the function finds no prefix and the root falls back to the working directory.
  • Row 6 is not fixed. ./cli is the file cli.js. The rule reads the typed path, and ./cli before /worker.js reads as a directory.
  • Controls that do not change: ./ab/x.js ./cd/y.js gives ab/x.js and cd/y.js, and ./ab/x.js ./ab/c/z.js gives x.js and c/z.js.
  • --root ab and --root cli give the 1.4.3 names of rows 1 and 4 on this PR.
  • bun build --compile ./ab/main.ts ./abc/worker.ts, with the executable run in an empty directory: on 1.4.3-canary new Worker("./abc/worker.ts") and new Worker("../abc/worker.ts") both fail with ModuleNotFound. With this PR ./abc/worker.ts loads the embedded worker, with and without --aot.
  • --aot has this case right on main: common_entry_point_directory_is_root pins src/a.ts beside src-gen/b.ts at /project (src/bundler/aot/options/tests.rs:619).
  • Bun.build, bun build: use the shared directory of 9 or more entry points as the default root #38732 keeps the 1.4.3 names of rows 1 and 4 for 2 to 8 entry points on purpose, and pins them in naming/ImplicitOutbaseOfTypedEntryPoints/SiblingDirectory and SiblingFile. The two PRs disagree on this case.
  • Tests: ends at a path separator, not inside a name in test/bundler/cli.test.ts (rows 1, 2 and 4) and the default root ends at a path separator, not inside a name in test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts (the same rows with absolute entry points).

New names without --root. bun build --outdir on 1.4.3-canary 367d939 and on a debug build of this PR. The last column is the --root that gives the 1.4.3 names on this PR.

  • Mixed spellings: the executable accepts ./w/worker.ts instead of ./src/w/worker.ts.
  • Beside the working directory: an entry point inside it and another one elsewhere, not above it. An entry point above it (./index.js ../worker.js, the shape of Bun 1.4 regression: compiled parent entrypoints are renamed from ../ to _.._ #32728) keeps the working directory and its .. name, as on main.
  • Above the working directory, absolute: main compares the typed strings, so two absolute paths get the folder above, and ./index.js ../worker.js gets the working directory. This PR gives the working directory for both spellings.
  • Above the working directory at two depths: the typed prefix of main is ../, which does not hold far.js. This PR gives the directory that holds both.
  • Nine or more entry points that share a directory get that directory as the root, as two to eight do. On main the 9+ loop of get_if_exists_longest_common_path gives the working directory instead. Bun.build, bun build: use the shared directory of 9 or more entry points as the default root #38732 proposes the same change inside that function.
  • Cost: common_entry_directory makes one Vec per entry point and four more, one time per build. It makes no syscall and does no work per module or per request. The callers make one more openat only when the first one failed.
  • Not fixed: ./cli ./cli/worker.js, where ./cli is the file cli.js, still writes _.._/cli.js (row 6 of the table above).

A shared directory that does not open. bun build and Bun.build() open the default root to read its real path. common_entry_directory derives the root from names, so it can name a directory that is not there, or one that the user may enter and not list (mode 311). Main gives these builds the working directory when their spellings are mixed or there are nine or more entry points, because the typed prefix is empty there. The shared directory then stopped them. Both callers now open the working directory when the shared directory of several entry points fails to open with ENOENT, ENOTDIR, ELOOP or EACCES (common_entry_directory_falls_back in src/bundler/options.rs), and the names are those of --root .. Any other error is reported as before. --aot does not open the root and is not changed. A single entry point is not changed: bun build madeup/a.js stops with ENOENT on main and here (#45176).

  • The first nine rows are builds that main makes. The last three stop on main and build now: the rule no longer reads the spelling, so it cannot tell them from the rows above.
  • A file or a link loop in place of the shared directory gives ENOTDIR or ELOOP. fc3df4b fell back on ENOENT and EACCES only, so by its code these two builds stop there. That build was not run.
  • With the folder at mode 755 the last row gives x/a.js and y/b.js on main and here.
  • With --outdir . the names of the working directory are the paths of the inputs: bun build madeup/a.js madeup/b.js --outdir . now writes over node_modules/madeup/a.js and b.js and exits 0. bun build madeup madeup/a.js --outdir . does the same on main and here. bundler: refuse to write an output file over one of the build's inputs #41612 refuses such a write, and Bun.build, bun build: use the working directory when the default root does not exist #45176 refuses it for its fallback.
  • Tests: is the working directory for names that a package resolves (six rows, two of them beside a file and beside a link loop) and the default root is the working directory when the shared directory does not open in test/bundler/cli.test.ts, and the two tests of the same purpose in test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts. The mode 311 tests run the build as uid 65534 when the suite runs as root.
  • Bun.build with the unlistable folder above the working directory builds too. On an ASAN build LeakSanitizer then reports a DirEntry of the resolver (src/resolver/resolver.rs:4918) and the child exits with 134. Bun.build with root: "." does the same, so the leak does not come from this PR. The Bun.build test puts the unlistable folder inside the working directory, where nothing leaks. The CLI test covers the folder above.

Why the absolute rule. docs/bundler/index.mdx:1053 and docs/compiler/compatibility.mdx:1047 both describe the root as the folder that all entry points share. The --aot unit tests (src/bundler/aot/options/tests.rs, common_entry_point_directory_is_root, entry_point_count_does_not_change_root) pin that rule, with src/a.ts ./src/b.ts as one case.

The rule for an entry point above the working directory. Three shapes constrain it. test/regression/issue/32728.test.ts: bun build --compile ./index.js ../worker.js must embed ../worker.js, so the root stays the working directory when an entry point inside it has a sibling above it. The --aot program tests build entry points from the repository and from a temp directory into one executable: --aot names an entry point outside the root with .., and its loader does not find such a module by its path on disk, so a root floored at the working directory broke them (two earlier revisions did that). Bun.build() with every entry point in a temp directory (5344.test.ts, the splitting tests) needs that directory as the root. The rule that fits all three: the working directory is the root when it holds an entry point and every other one lies inside it or in a folder above it. Otherwise the root is the shared directory, as --aot has it on main (its unit tests pin / for a.ts beside /other/b.ts).

--aot and ../worker.ts. With --aot, new Worker("../worker.ts") in app/index.ts built from app/ fails with ModuleNotFound on this branch and with --root .., which is the layout main gives. No change.

No real-path step. common_entry_directory does not read the file system. The callers open the shared directory and read its real path afterwards, as before. A symlinked directory inside the working directory (node_modules/@acme/ui to ../../packages/ui) keeps its real directory as the root, as on main.

Host path rules. longest_common_path_native (new in src/paths/resolve_path.rs) is longest_common_path with platform::Auto: the host's path rules. On Windows the compare is case-insensitive and paths on two volumes share nothing.

A directory as an entry point (bun build . src/x.ts) is folded as itself, not as its parent: the dirname step applies to a single entry point only. A single entry point keeps its own directory, wherever it is, in all three products.

An empty entry point list is refused before the root is derived: config.get_array answers None for [], and Bun.build({entrypoints: []}) throws Expected entrypoints to be an array of strings as before.

Existing tests. No test in test/ builds with mixed spellings and asserts a layout. itBundled makes entryPoints absolute and passes entryPointsRaw as written, and every multi-entry test spells them uniformly.

CI. Builds 135383 and 135498 (the retrigger) are red on one lane only: test/aot/build-scaling/build-scaling-2.test.ts on macOS aarch64, a memory budget of the ahead-of-time compiler (twice as many functions cost 2.53 times the peakBytes; allowed: 2.5). This PR does not touch the compiler's memory. It is reported as a break on main. Every other failure passed on retry.

get_if_exists_longest_common_path has no caller left and is removed. The mordant check fails on an unused pub fn. #38732 changes that function, so the two PRs conflict there.

Designs not taken. Making --aot copy the as-typed rule keeps a root that changes with ./, and Bun.build() has the same defect. A normalization step inside build_command.rs only leaves Bun.build() and --aot with their own copies of the rule. --root sets the root by hand and is unchanged.

Tests and suites. 21 new tests: 16 in test/bundler/cli.test.ts, 4 in test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts and 1 in test/bundler/bundler_compile.test.ts (compile plus Worker). 13 fail on 1.4.3-canary 367d939, all pass on a debug build of this head, also with the leak detection of the ASAN lane. The eight that pass on 1.4.3 are controls: the working directory as the root for ./index.ts ../worker.ts, the shared directory for ../a.ts ../b.ts, three package rows that main builds, the two rows beside a file and beside a link loop, and the CLI test with a directory at mode 311. Also ran test/regression/issue/32728.test.ts, test/regression/issue/5344.test.ts, bundler_naming.test.ts, the whole of cli.test.ts and bun-build-api.test.ts, and the aot::options unit tests.

Walkthrough

Multi-entry builds now use a shared helper to infer the default root directory from entry paths. The JavaScript build API, CLI, and AOT options use the helper. Regression tests cover path spelling, directory boundaries, output paths, inaccessible directories, and embedded worker resolution.

Changes

Multi-entry root directory inference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared common entry directory calculation
src/paths/resolve_path.rs, src/bundler/aot/*, src/bundler/options.rs
Bundler options add a shared common-entry-directory calculation using native path rules. AOT options call the shared helper. Path helpers become crate-visible, and duplicate local helpers are removed.
Runtime root inference and regression tests
src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs, src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs, test/bundler/*
The JavaScript API and CLI use the shared helper for multi-entry builds. Tests cover entry-path spellings, parent paths, output-root boundaries, inaccessible shared directories, and embedded worker resolution.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#47237] requires --compile and --aot to resolve the same relative new Worker() path when entry points are in a subfolder. common_entry_directory derives the shared root from absolute entry-point paths, and both build modes use that root. The compile regression test covers embedded Worker resolution. The prior review also verified the relevant AOT and regression tests. The current incremental changes do not alter this shared-root behavior.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The working-directory fallback in bun build and Bun.build() handles shared roots that cannot be opened. It supports the new root-selection behavior and has regression tests. The path helper changes, call-site updates, and output-root tests also support consistent root selection. No unrelated change is established by the reviewed evidence.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two sections, "What does this PR do?" and "How did you verify your code works?". The "Fix" and "Problem" parts state the goal and the root-directory change. The verification section names 21 new tests in test/bundler/ and reports that 13 fail on 1.4.3. It also lists controls, CI status, and a no-test-proof evidence note that defers platform-specific tests to CI. The description is very long, and parts of it are detail-heavy, but the required information is present and specific.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the deleted is_inside early return in widen_to_assets (src/bundler/aot/options.rs:386): all three callers pass FileSystem::top_level_dir(), which on POSIX is the physical getcwd, so the clamp in common_entry_directory already keeps the entry directory at or under that same path and the fold cannot rise above it — the only remaining gap is the Windows junction/subst case noted inline. The deferred common_entry_directory: Vec<u8> binding in build_command.rs is assigned on exactly one arm before it is borrowed, so the lifetime extension is sound.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves the default-root computation for bun build, Bun.build() and --aot into one helper in src/bundler/options.rs that absolutizes, realpaths, and clamps the common entry directory to the working directory, and rewires JSBundler.rs and build_command.rs to it; no security-sensitive surface is touched. Posted inline findings (symlinked entry directories nesting outputs under _.._, the single-entry CLI/JS arms still diverging from --aot, and one new test passing on the base) plus a prior-run concern that the new commits did not change mean a human should still weigh the layout changes before merging.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs — nit: bun build --compile and --aot still embed different roots for one entry point outside the working directory, which the change set out to unify. The single-entry arms at src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs:496-499 and src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs:1360-1365 keep the lexical dirname of the entry as typed, bypassing common_entry_directory, while --aot now clamps that case to the cwd (src/bundler/aot/options/tests.rs:604 expects /project for /main.ts). Fix: route the single-entry case of both the CLI and Bun.build() through common_entry_directory too, or state in the helper's doc that single entries keep the old rule, so all three products agree for bun build ../other/main.ts.

    Why this was flagged

A user runs bun build --compile /other/main.ts from /project. build_command.rs:496-499 takes bun_core::dirname of the entry, so the root is /other and the file is embedded as /$bunfs/root/main.ts. The same entry with --aot goes through common_entry_directory (src/bundler/aot/options.rs:362), whose single-entry arm at src/bundler/options.rs:81 gives /other, which src/bundler/options.rs:92-93 then clamps to /project because it is Unrelated; the entry is then named relative to /project. On the base branch both products answered /other (the old aot test case at src/bundler/aot/options/tests.rs:604 expected / for /main.ts, matching dirname), so this divergence for single entries outside the cwd is introduced by the change rather than removed by it. Bun.build() at src/runtime/api/JSBundler.rs:1360-1365 has the same single-entry bypass.

Verification: Trigger: a single entry point whose directory is outside the working directory. src/runtime/cli/build_command.rs:496-499 returns before reaching the new common_entry_directory call, so the single-entry root is the lexical dirname (/other). With --aot the clamp at src/bundler/options.rs:92-93 returns /project. The base already diverged, so this is not a new regression.

The tests and the description now cover entry points whose names begin with one another.

  • The case: ./ab/x.js ./abc/y.js builds to x.js and _.._/abc/y.js on 1.4.3, and ./cli.ts ./cli/worker.ts builds to worker.js and _.._/cli.js. This PR writes ab/x.js, abc/y.js and cli.js, cli/worker.js, as esbuild 0.21.5 does.
  • Commit 6e2bab0 adds 3 rows to test/bundler/cli.test.ts and 1 test to test/bundler/bun-build-api.test.ts. All 4 fail on 1.4.3-canary 367d939 and pass on a debug build of this head. The commit changes no source file.
  • The description names the case in Problem, Fix and Downsides. Notes has the table of names and the --root that gives the old names.
  • Not fixed: ./cli ./cli/worker.js, where ./cli is the file cli.js, still writes _.._/cli.js.
  • Bun.build, bun build: use the shared directory of 9 or more entry points as the default root #38732 keeps the old names of this case for 2 to 8 entry points on purpose and pins them in its tests. The two PRs disagree on this case.

A separate report about the last Downsides bullet (./cli ./cli/worker.js, where ./cli is the file cli.js) reached #38732. It does not fit there: #38732 leaves 2 to 8 entry points as they are, and it pins this shape at 2 and at 9 entry points (naming/ImplicitOutbaseOfTypedEntryPoints/FileEntryPointWithoutExtension). What I found:

  • It reproduces on 1.4.3-canary 367d939: _.._/cli.js and worker.js. esbuild 0.21.5 writes cli.js and cli/worker.js.
  • A fix needs the file that each entry point resolves to. ./cli resolves to cli.js before the directory cli/, so a test that ./cli is a directory gives the wrong answer for this shape.
  • Its place is common_entry_directory, because after this PR that is where bun build, Bun.build() and --aot compute the root. On main it would be two call sites and the --aot copy.
  • It changes a default again (_.._/cli.js and worker.js become cli.js and cli/worker.js). So it is a question for the maintainer together with this PR, and I did not open a third PR for it.

One more point for the decision here. This PR moves the root of 9 or more entry points from the working directory to their shared folder, as #38732 does. The description of #38732 lists what follows from that move (Notes, items 4 to 7): a typed folder that does not exist fails with ENOENT opening root directory (#45176), .js entry points with their own directory as --outdir are replaced (#41612), and --dts fails for a source outside the shared folder. I did not run those cases on this PR. Both call sites still open the root after common_entry_directory, so I expect the same results. The tests for those cases are in #38732.

…ve an entry point inside it

test/regression/issue/32728.test.ts is back to its form on main.

When Windows entry points are on different volumes, the supplied contract says longest_common_path_native returns no shared path; resolving that empty result against the working directory may yield a root that contains neither all entries nor their volumes.

An entry on the other volume may get an invalid or incorrect output name, or the build may fail while deriving it.

This can occur when: A Windows build has absolute entry points on C: and D: without an explicit root.

…ry of the entry points does not open

`bun build` and `Bun.build()` open the directory that several entry points
share, to read its real path. It is derived from the names of the entry
points, so it can be a directory that is not there (a package or a plugin
resolves the names) or one that the user may enter and not list. The build
then stopped with `ENOENT opening root directory` or `EACCES`. The working
directory is the root now, which is what these builds get on main when
their spellings are mixed or there are nine or more entry points.

`get_if_exists_longest_common_path` has no caller left and is removed.

Pushed a275e67 on top of 238f8cd. The rule in common_entry_directory is not changed.

What it changes. bun build and Bun.build() use the working directory as the root when the shared directory of several entry points does not open.

How it was reproduced. Two scripts, each row run on 1.4.3-canary 367d939 and on a debug build of 238f8cd merged with main:

  • Entry points that a package or a plugin resolves: bun build madeup madeup/a.js, nine madeup/eN.js, and Bun.build with a plugin for routes/a.js ./routes/b.js and for nine routes/eN.js. 1.4.3 builds all four. 238f8cd stops with ENOENT opening root directory.
  • A shared folder at mode 311, run as uid 65534: ./index.ts ../x/lib.ts and nine entry points in ../x and ../y, through the CLI and Bun.build. 1.4.3 builds all four. 238f8cd stops with EACCES opening root directory.

Both scripts exit 0 on a275e67, with the names that 1.4.3 gives.

Also in the push.

The PR body has the table of the 10 rows and the two new Downsides lines.

642-643: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add an AOT variant of the new Worker test.

The new compile/EmbeddedRootIgnoresEntryPointSpelling case runs only with compile: true. The shared root derivation also runs for --aot, but no inspected AOT test resolves a nested Worker spec against differing embedded and disk copies. Add a sibling itBundled case with compile: { aot: true }, as bundler_edgecase.test.ts already does for its AOT cases. The AOT path then gets the same regression check.

…p the unlistable-directory test off the ASAN lane

The resolver keeps the directory entry of an ancestor it may not list, and
the sanitizer reports it at exit. That happens before the build, on main too.
… run the Bun.build test under ASAN again

The shared directory of the entry points can also be a file, or a link
that leads to itself: `bun build madeup/e0.js ... madeup/e8.js` beside a
file `./madeup` builds on main and stopped with `ENOTDIR opening root
directory`. One predicate, `common_entry_directory_falls_back`, now names
the errors for both callers: ENOENT, ENOTDIR, ELOOP and EACCES. Any other
error is reported as before.

The Bun.build test of a directory that the user may not list runs on the
ASAN lane again. It builds from a folder inside the working directory,
where the resolver leaks nothing, and one of its two builds has both entry
points in one spelling, which stops with `EACCES: failed to open root
directory: src/` on 1.4.3.

Pushed 1b2ea3c on top of fc3df4b. Two changes to the fallback and its tests.

The errors that fall back. fc3df4b fell back on ENOENT and EACCES only. Two more shapes build on 1.4.3-canary 367d939, because main never opens the derived directory when the spellings are mixed or there are nine or more entry points:

  • bun build madeup/e0.js ... madeup/e8.js beside a regular file ./madeup: the shared directory is a file, ENOTDIR.
  • the same beside a link ./madeup that leads to itself: ELOOP.

Both build again. common_entry_directory_falls_back in src/bundler/options.rs now names the four errors for both callers. Any other error, EIO for example, is reported as before.

The Bun.build test on the ASAN lane. The test failed in build 135338 on debian 13 x64-asan because the child exits with 134: LeakSanitizer reports a DirEntry of the resolver (src/resolver/resolver.rs:4918) when Bun.build runs below a folder above the working directory that the user may not list. Bun.build with root: "." does the same, so the leak is not from the default root. It is reported separately.

fc3df4b skipped the test under ASAN. The test now builds from an unlistable folder inside the working directory, where nothing leaks, and runs on every POSIX lane again. One of its two builds has both entry points in one spelling and stops with EACCES: failed to open root directory: src/ on 1.4.3. The CLI test still covers the folder above the working directory, and it passes with the leak detection of the ASAN lane.

Local runs on a debug build of 1b2ea3c: the 20 default-root tests of cli.test.ts and bun-build-api.test.ts pass, also with detect_leaks=1.
