Puck answered every NIP-47 request addressed to its key, from any author, so any Nostr key that knew the wallet's pubkey could call pay_invoice and spend the wallet. This restricts service to configured clients, verifies requests, and moves puck to libnostr-z 0.5.0 on Zig 0.16 and 0.17.

Breaking: puck now refuses to start unless [nostr] client_pubkeys lists the client keys it serves (hex or npub). Requests from any other key are dropped without a reply, and the relay subscription only asks for those authors.

Security fixes:

  • Request signatures and ids are verified (Event.validate), and the p tag must be puck's key.
  • Replays are rejected: a seen-id guard, a 10 minute staleness window, and a since on the subscription. The NIP-47 expiration tag is honored.
  • pay_invoice checks a client-supplied amount against the invoice's own amount and refuses amountless or malformed invoices; LNbits is never sent an amount.
  • make_invoice rejects amounts that are not whole sats (1500 msat used to create a 1 sat invoice while reporting 1500).
  • lookup_invoice requires a 64-hex payment_hash (it was placed into the LNbits URL path, sent with the admin key).
  • The LNbits client no longer follows redirects (which would carry the admin key to another host), no longer advertises compression it could not decode, and errors on an oversized response instead of truncating it into an aliased buffer.
  • The relay message parser is libnostr-z's string-aware one (the hand-written one cut events at braces inside strings). NIP-04 or untagged requests get UNSUPPORTED_ENCRYPTION, unknown methods NOT_IMPLEMENTED. A negative balance, SIGPIPE, and a socket error that looped without reconnecting no longer crash or hang puck.

Unit tests cover authorization, request checks, amount parsing and response building (21 tests). Run live against a local relay and an LNbits stand-in on both compilers: get_info and get_balance answered and encrypted to the client, unauthorized keys got no response, a byte-exact replay was ignored, and the rejection paths above returned the expected errors. A real LNbits payment was not exercised. CI is added for Linux and macOS on both Zig versions.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds client-key authorization and request validation to Puck’s Nostr Wallet Connect flow. It adds replay and expiration checks, encryption-scheme handling, invoice validation, and LNbits input checks. It also updates relay parsing, Zig build compatibility, CI, configuration examples, and setup documentation.

Changes

Nostr Wallet Connect Flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Client-key configuration
src/config.zig, puck.toml.example, README.md
Configuration parsing accepts client public keys in hex or npub form and requires at least one key. It adds exact-match authorization and documents the configuration requirement.
Build and CI compatibility
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .gitignore, build.zig, build.zig.zon, README.md
Build settings and dependency data are updated. CI builds and tests on Ubuntu and macOS with Zig 0.16.0 and 0.17.0.
Relay lifecycle and message parsing
src/main.zig, src/relay.zig
Startup and relay handling use process I/O, signal shutdown, reconnect handling, and event filters. Relay parsing validates message fields and EVENT JSON payloads.
Request authorization and response handling
src/main.zig, README.md
Requests are checked for authorization, recipient, signature, expiration, age, and replay before decryption. The handler selects encryption and builds signed responses.
Invoice validation and LNbits operations
src/lnbits.zig, src/main.zig
LNbits validates payment hashes and whole-satoshi invoice amounts. Request handling validates invoice strings and BOLT-11 amounts and compares supplied amounts with invoice amounts.

The client allowlist and request checks work as intended in normal setups, with three gaps. A leftover second client_pubkeys line keeps old keys authorized. Requests dated far in the future can be replayed after a restart. Very large key lists stop the service from subscribing to the relay. Fix the allowlist parsing before merging.

Reject duplicate client_pubkeys assignments.

If an operator adds a new client_pubkeys assignment during key rotation but leaves the old assignment, addClientPubkeys combines both lists. The old key remains authorized. Duplicate key assignments are invalid TOML; reject a second nostr.client_pubkeys assignment instead of appending its entries. (github.com)

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fail at config load when the authors filter cannot fit the fixed buffers.

Each authorized key adds 67 bytes to filter_buf (4096 bytes). If the config has roughly 59 or more client keys, buildRequestFilter returns error.NoSpaceLeft. Relay.subscribe adds the ["REQ","nwc",...] wrapper inside a second 4096-byte buffer, so it returns SendFailed at a slightly lower key count.

Both failures happen inside runEventLoop. main logs the error and reconnects every 5 seconds without end. The service never subscribes, and the log does not name the configuration as the cause.

Reject an oversized client_pubkeys list in Config.load. As an alternative, size both buffers from client_pubkeys.items.len.

Reject requests whose created_at is far in the future.

checkRequest enforces a lower bound only: event.createdAt() < now - max_request_age_s. A signed request with created_at hours or days ahead of now passes this check.

ReplayGuard resets on every process restart. After a restart, the guard is empty. A captured future-dated request is still inside the window, so it can be replayed and executed again. The 600-second replay guarantee in the comment at Lines 18-20 therefore fails for future-dated events. A client with a clock that runs fast can create such events by accident.

Add an upper bound with a small allowance for clock skew.
