Offered on #339 — the follow-up extraction the maintainer approved: move the Rails/Ruby-only walks into src/ingest_ruby.h as a pure relocation with byte-identical output, leaving the shared-feature implementations where they are.

What moves (verbatim, no code edits)

Out of ingest_names.h:

  • the rendered db/schema.rb column lane — kRubySchemaNonColumns, rubyFirstNonCommentArg, rubyPairKeyText, rubySchemaColumnCall, rubySchemaTableCall (+ the id-rule helpers)

Out of ingest_binds.h:

  • the Jbuilder view typing — typeRubyJbuilderLocal
  • the FactoryBot walk — RubyFactoryWalk, captureRubyFactories, rubyFactoryDefaultClass / rubyCallOption / rubyFactoryClassOption
  • the class-side DSL walks — captureRubyHelperMethods, captureRubySingletonAccessors, captureRubyClassMixins, plus their private helper cluster (rubyDefSide, RubyDefSide, rubyNote*, kRubyIncluderBlocks, rubyIncluderHook, …)

What stays (the shaping rule)

  • captureRubyDefs / captureRubyAttrDefsCall — definitions are a feature every language has; they sit with the shared path in ingest_names.h. The single def-walker still dispatches both lanes and reaches the schema minting through its existing forward declaration (the elixirArguments same-TU hook).
  • captureRubyBareCalls + the typed-receiver cluster — receiver classification, ingest_binds.h.
  • captureRubyMixinBases — base relations, ingest_relations.h (slice 4a retires it in a follow-up PR).

Structure

src/ingest_ruby.h is a per-language section in the ingest_elixir.h slot of the ingest TU: it reopens namespace rw + the unnamed namespace, adds one include line in ingest.cpp, and adds zero new API surface. Comment locators that named the old files (graph.h, model.h, ingest_cache.h, queries/ruby/tags.scm) are retagged; ingest_ruby.h is registered in optremarks.py's COLD list and fieldidcheck's SITE_FILES; five FE-B ack rows whose line numbers shifted are relocated (verified to land on identical code).

No extraction change

Pure relocation → no kParserVer / kQSnapCacheScheme bump (byte-identical output; caches stay valid). No CHANGELOG entry, matching the 2026-08-29 split and the elixir carve precedent for pure relocations.

Verification

  • argvdiffcheck — 678 argv vectors vs the main binary (base a87470c7, the commit this branch is rebased on): 676 byte-identical, and the 2 that differ are --version alone — the built_from= build stamp, which differs because the two binaries are built from different commits. Masking that one field makes them identical, and --help is identical byte-for-byte. This is the repo's own disclosed exception for this gate (the 2026-08-29 split landed on the same terms); the gate skips entirely in CI, where no reference binary exists.
  • map / --deps / --skipped / --uses / --callers / --impact / --callees — byte-identical on a real Rails app and the Ruby fixtures.
  • 21 ruby/map gates ALL PASS; qschemetripcheck, optremarkshotcheck, fieldidcheck ALL PASS.
  • Full pargates suite (698 gates, 4 shards): no failure attributable to this change. The 13 that fail are all pre-existing/environmental, each confirmed: memguardcheck, savecachecheck, binoverridecheck, qualitystalecheck fail identically on clean main; legendcoveragecheck, xmlwellformed, impactpartitioncheck are host-load timeouts under -j6 and ALL PASS standalone; regexcheck needs rg (absent here — a listed suite prerequisite); doctorcheck (F6) is the container's which(1) canonicalization; skillevalcheck is a root-run artifact (PASS as uid 1000).
  • ASan build + run clean; determinism + xmllint clean.
  • --quality-delta origin/main..HEAD — gates 0 (7 non-gating new-symbol rows = the relocated functions re-keyed under their new path; their metrics are unchanged).

Follow-up (not in this PR)

Slice 4a — Ruby include/extend/prepend expressed as shared-vocabulary captures read by the shared base-relations path, retiring captureRubyMixinBases — is a separate PR, per the map's "best as its own PR after the extraction".

📝 Walkthrough

The PR moves Ruby-specific capture logic from ingest_binds.h and ingest_names.h into ingest_ruby.h, then includes it from ingest.cpp. The new section handles Rails schema columns, Jbuilder and helper references, class-side Ruby bindings, and FactoryBot/FactoryGirl factories. Related comments, checks, and source-line anchors are updated.

Changes: Ruby Capture Ingest

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add and wire the Ruby ingest section
src/ingest.cpp, src/ingest_ruby.h, src/ingest_binds.h, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md, scripts/optremarks.py, test/fieldidcheck.sh, .ripwire_quality_acks
ingest.cpp includes the new translation-unit-local Ruby ingest section. Ruby capture helpers are removed from ingest_binds.h. Related ingest descriptions, checks, and source-line anchors are updated.
Capture rendered Rails schema columns
src/ingest_ruby.h, src/ingest_names.h, queries/ruby/tags.scm
Schema capture moves into ingest_ruby.h. It records qualifying table columns, timestamps, and ID definitions. Comments identify the new capture source.
Capture Jbuilder references and helper methods
src/ingest_ruby.h
Bare json reads are removed, calls on a named json receiver are typed as JbuilderTemplate, and class-body helper_method declarations bind their symbol arguments.
Capture Ruby class-side bindings
src/ingest_ruby.h, src/model.h
The new section captures singleton definitions, singleton accessors, delegation declarations, and class-side mixins. Model comments point to the new source.
Capture FactoryBot and FactoryGirl factories
src/ingest_ruby.h, src/graph.h, src/ingest_cache.h, test/fieldidcheck.sh
Factory definitions and aliases are bound to resolved classes. Related source comments and field-lookup checks include the new ingest section.

…ruby.h (redhat-et#339 extraction)

Pure relocation, byte-identical output. The rendered db/schema.rb column capture,
the Jbuilder view typing, the FactoryBot walk and the class-side helper-method /
singleton-accessor / mixin DSL walks move VERBATIM out of ingest_names.h and
ingest_binds.h into one per-language section in the ingest_elixir.h slot. The
single def-walker that dispatches the schema lane stays in the shared names
section and reaches the minting through its existing forward declaration.

Shared feature families stay where they are: captureRubyDefs / captureRubyAttrDefsCall
(definitions, ingest_names.h), captureRubyBareCalls + the typed-receiver cluster
(receiver classification, ingest_binds.h), captureRubyMixinBases (base relations,
ingest_relations.h — slice 4a retires it in the follow-up PR).

No extraction change: kParserVer and kQSnapCacheScheme stay (byte-identical,
argvdiffcheck 678 vectors). Comment locators retagged (graph.h, model.h,
ingest_cache.h, tags.scm); the five FE-B ack rows whose line numbers shifted are
relocated; ingest_ruby.h registered in optremarks.py COLD_FILES and
fieldidcheck's SITE_FILES.

Thanks @mpapis, this is a clean relocation. We checked it three ways:

  • Verbatim move. We pulled all 31 top-level blocks out of src/ingest_ruby.h and found each code body unchanged in the base ingest_names.h / ingest_binds.h, with none left behind. A line-by-line comparison of the removed and added lines found no code differences, only the new file header, the namespace wrappers and three reworded comment lines. Linkage is unchanged: the moved code stays in the same rw::(anonymous) namespace of the ingest.cpp translation unit, behind the same #error guard as ingest_elixir.h. kParserVer stays at 171, which is correct for a pure move.
  • Byte-identical output. We built the base and head binaries and ran each with --no-cache on 87 argv. Every run matched on stdout, stderr and exit code. The argv covered a small Rails fixture (schema.rb columns, FactoryBot with aliases: and class:, a Jbuilder view, helper_method, class << self, included do / class_methods do, extend self), rake, test/rubyschemafix, five of the #339 schema fixtures, and ripwire itself queried on the moved symbols. The verbs were map, --for, --callers, --callees, --impact, --whereis, --uses and --quality-delta. All 20 Ruby gates pass, as do fieldidcheck, optremarkscheck, optremarkshotcheck, staleackcheck and ackonlycheck.
  • Shape. The split matches the common-code map. The Rails/DSL pieces with no counterpart in another language moved. Definitions, receiver classification and captureRubyMixinBases stay in the shared sections, as agreed on #339. Thanks also for fixing the stale noteDeclaredCall locator in model.h.

--quality-delta gates 0. Its six rows are new-symbol rows on code that moved unchanged, so they do not block.

Two small things:

  1. src/ingest.cpp:199 puts a # comment after the include, and clang warns about it: warning: extra tokens at end of #include directive [-Wextra-tokens]. It is the only warning in the build; GCC and MSVC (C4067) warn too. Could you change the # to //, like the handlershape.h line above it?
  2. Optional: two comments still say the Jbuilder typing lives in ingest_binds.h. They are src/ingest_crawl.h:194 ("…the template's (ingest_binds.h)") and src/model.h:908 ("ingest_binds.h types the local…"). Both could now point at ingest_ruby.h.

With (1) fixed, this looks good to merge.

… comments

The trailing note after the include used `#`, which is not a C++ comment
marker: it leaves extra tokens on the preprocessing directive, and clang
(-Wextra-tokens), GCC and MSVC (C4067) each warn on it. This was the build's
only warning.

The two comments that still named ingest_binds.h as the home of the Jbuilder
typing now point at ingest_ruby.h, which this branch moved it to: the language
table's `.jbuilder` note (ingest_crawl.h) and the kJbuilderLocal block
(model.h). Review points 1 and 2, both from the redhat-et#396 review.

@joyful-ii-V-I — both points are done, in 88cc3383 (a second commit on top of fe15f12f; nothing rewritten).

1. // on the include. Fixed. I confirmed the class with a two-line repro rather than taking it on faith:

  • clang 19.1.7 — warning: extra tokens at end of #include directive [-Wextra-tokens]
  • g++ 15.3.0 — warning: extra tokens at end of '#include' directive

Both are silent with //. After the change the only warning left in my GCC build is the pre-existing -Wsubobject-linkage in ingest_astquery.h, a file this PR does not touch. I swept the tree for the same shape: the remaining #-after-directive hits are all ## / #param inside #define bodies.

2. The two Jbuilder comments (the optional one) — done as well: ingest_crawl.h:194 and model.h:908 now point at ingest_ruby.h. I grepped for any other comment naming the old home of the moved lane; there is none left.

Re-verified on the new head:

  • 13 ruby gates + mapdatasectioncheck — ALL PASS
  • byte-identical map / --deps / --skipped on the Rails app and both fixtures, against a main binary
  • argvdiffcheck 676/678 — the 2 are --version alone, the built_from= build stamp, because the two binaries come from different commits; masking that one field makes them identical, and --help is identical
  • ASan rebuild clean: self-crawl, the Rails app, both fixtures
  • kParserVer stays 171 — still a pure move

Thanks for the three-way check on the relocation, and for the handlershape.h pointer — the line now uses exactly that form.

Merged — thank you, @mpapis. A pure relocation that is provably verbatim (31 blocks, unchanged linkage, 87/87 argv byte-identical) is exactly how the common-code split should move, and it gives the language-specific layer its first clean example of a per-language file: Rails/DSL-only walks in ingest_ruby.h, definitions and receiver classification left on the shared path. Thanks also for the quick follow-up on the include comment.
